Top Posters mod for vb 3.6.
This displays a page with the Top Forum Posters for a given set of periods. Two periods are fixed ('This Month' & 'Overall') but can be turned off in the options. The other three periods are user definable (in days) - the default values are 1 day (24 hours), 7 days & 28 days. These three columns cannot be turned off.
The number of posters to be shown can also be set, the default is the top 10 posters. You can also select which usergroups are included (or excluded) in the count, so members in banned groups etc are not shown. Excluded is only available from v3.29 onwards.
If enabled, it will also attempt to add a link to your Quick Links or Navbar. There is an option to prefix this path if you use something like CMPS.
To install just unzip the xml file and import it using the Product Manager

The overall column isn't pulling in the actual top 10. If you go to the member list and sort on posts you can see there are people missing.
Same goes for each column. On my forum it isn't pulling in the actual top 10 for that time period. Not sure if it is related to multiple user groups or what!
Did you read the notes ?
The number of posters to be shown can also be set, the default is the top 10 posters. You can also select which usergroups are included in the count, so members in banned groups etc are not shownThe default is 2,5,6,7 I believe (and also primary usergroup only).

I love this hack.
One thing I do wish it had... the option to pull the top Posters for the past 12 hours, rather than just 24 hours. This would be very useful for sites that have posting contests aka Post-a-thons ;)
If you set one of the columns to 0.5 days then you will get 12 hours.

like on the main page, will the top users suppose to show on top of the forums...
If you mean on the navbar, no this will not do that, you would have to manually add a link. This is designed to (try and) add it to your Quick Links only.

I installed it, and I'm using 3.6 gold. When I change the original 3 column defaults of 1 day, 7 days, and 28 to different numbers, it recalculates everything correctly, but the headers still say "24 hours", "7 days" "28 days".
how can this be fixed? thanks

It occurs to me that it might be easier to let people specify which usergroup to block from the toplist, rather than which group to add to the toplist.

Then I have no idea, and don't really see how it's possible, mysql should return what you ask it for.

Great hack. It has been installed on our site for at least a month and I just noticed a huge flaw (well, maybe not) but check this:
So we have a Top Posters Competition where each month a top poster wins $20 for having the most posts in that given month. Fine, no problem.
A new month is finally here (Aug 1st) and the top posters system HAS NOT RESET back to 0. Is this something we're going to code in ourselves to reset these stats?
Anyways, obvisouly the script doesn't support stat resetting, so I ask .. is there an easy method to reset all stats on a given month maybe via CRON or my manuallly typing something in or by running a script to reset?
Please advise what tables I need to clean out to reset each month?
Thanks in advance guys.

Huh ?
"Huh" what? I asked you for support, I asked you for an older version, and you ignored me.
I just got this email from a programmer I use:
The problem is with this topposters module, you know this, right?
http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=121918
Here is what I found in topposters.php:
// List usergroups to be included //
$groups = '2,5,6,7,12,20,21';
These groups were just hardcoded in module code, so settings in vBulletin options were useless!
It should work now.
And guess what? It DOES work now. Thanks, buddy.
Maybe your programmer should have looked a bit more carefully ;)
This mod doesn't use topposters.php - nor does the 3.5 version, that file is only found in the original vb3.0 version.

04 Sep 2006, 14:42
Why should my programmer have looked more carefully? He got it working, that's all I care about. If you weren't so busy defending your "code" you would have realized you weren't helping solve the problem. Like I said in my last post - thanks, buddy. :D
Why should my programmer have looked more carefully? Perhaps to save himself/herself the trouble of fixing something that wasn't actually broken.
If you weren't so busy defending your "code" you would have realized you weren't helping solve the problem.I responded to you at least three times (posts 38, 41 & 43). :) I'm not quite sure how I'm supposed to realise you are trying to use a file that doesn't even exist in this version, or the current 3.5 version. As for "defending my code" - yes, I will, and make no apologies for it - if you choose to post an e-mail from a "programmer" saying that something is "useless" then you can be sure you will get a respose pointing out thier mistake.
If you have something that is working then great :) - but JFYI - what you have is not this mod, it guess it must be a very early 3.5 conversion (released while 3.5 was still in the beta stage) and you could [I think] uninstall this mod completely and that file would continue to work.

Is there any way to exclude a specific forum from counting towards the posts totals (while still allowing "Count Posts Made in this Forum Towards User Post Counts" to be yes in the vb adminCP)?
No, there is no such facility.
Installed - working!
can't change the 28 days column to somthing else.
how can I delete a column?
You can change the 28 days to whatever value you want.
The other three periods are user definable (in days) - the default values are 1 day (24 hours), 7 days & 28 days. These three columns cannot be turned off.
anyway to have a colum that an admin can reset... say if i want to have a top poster of the month contest starting in the middle of a month, i would like to reset a column to 0 posts and let to run until i click reset again
any chance of having this?
Sorry, but no - you cannot do that, and I have no plans to add such a feature.

You can change the 28 days to whatever value you want.
I think he means that whatever you change the days or hours to it still says 24 hours, 7 days, 28 days, in the column headers.
I fixed this by editing the original XML to say what I put the settings on and then uploading it again checking yes on Allow Override when I did. That worked. :)
or you could do it the proper way and just edit the phrase in the ACP, like you would any other phrase. :)
Is there a way I can edit the title to include my forum name on the list instead of it displaying "Top Posters List" by default?
Not exactly - it uses a phrase, but that phrase is used in more than one place.
Great mod Paul M.
Is there any way or a simple modification so that this would show the previous month's Top Posters as well? I'm planning on using this for a contest, and would love it if the previous months stats stayed for the month.

There is no way to do that, it would need a new section of code writing.
Hi, Great Mod!
Unfortunatly it didnt add it to my navbar, as its full. Is there anyway of making it a little link on the Whose Online part?It tries to attach a link in Quick Links, not the navbar - but that will only work if you don't have a customised style. Otherwise you need to manually add a link yourself.

Hey Even When I set 30 days instead of 28 days...It still shows the topic under Top posters as Last 28 days...is it just typo error or is it really showing posts from 28 days?
If you set it to 30 days then it will display 30 days - the text is a phrase, you need to edit that as well if you change the days.
Version 3.22 with vBulletin 3.6.2
There is definitely something wrong with the Last 28 days column. The totals in that are larger than the Overall column, which is correct. This must surely cast a doubt on other rolling totals?
Look at this site (http://www.carandimage.com/forums/index.php). The link is on navbar.
There is nothing wrong with it, You just need to understand what it does.
All the columns except "overall" count the actual number of posts in the database by each user over the time period - this includes any hidden/moderated/deleted posts, and any in private forums or forums that don't normally count posts. It is exactly what it says, a count of ALL posts in the given timeframe.
The final "overall" column is simply read from the user table, it is the one shown in a users postbit, it's not a true count and is rarely accurate on older forums - the reason it's done this way is simply because counting all posts in the database would be a seriously slow query on any decent sized forum.
Hmm, I have a hidden moderators forum with hundreds of posts that don't count to the moderator's post count. In your utility they are being counted. My moderators are hidden from view and moderate as a bord and we let anonymous usernames be used to do the necessary moderation. This utility virtually identifies them as moderators as they have hundreds more posts than show andmy forum is less than 28 days old, hence the problem.
Well I'm afraid the way it works is not going to change - about the only thing you could do is not include the moderators usergroup in the count (that is an option) - however, that assumes they are in their own primary usergroup and members might then wonder why those users never appear. If that's no good then I this hack is not for you.
Nice mod, as usual.

One of my members pointed out to me that column 3 should be 14 days instead of 28 since 1 month is already listed in the next column.
In the admin I switched column 3 to 14 days and it's not changing. It's still 28.

If you set it to 30 days then it will display 30 days - the text is a phrase, you need to edit that as well if you change the days.
JFYI, The 'this month' and '28 days' columns are not the same thing (view them on Nov 1st ;)).

This is a great utility, but it has started a fair amount of "post whoring" on my forums, while users try to break 200 posts a day and so on. Is there a way I could make this utility visible only to certain user groups - I am thinking of moderators and administrators? That way, we know what is going on, while normal users cannot see it.

However, Quick Links link work from a PhotoPost Gallery page, that also installed outside of the forum directory. misc.php is listed in the Navbar Replacements. Any help?

Saw that it adds the link under 'Quick Links' and noticed in the previous posts that one has to manually add it into the 'Navbar' template in order for it to appear on the main page
I know it maybe a pain to a experienced Vbulletin guy like yourself, but I am sure that many other users (myself included) would greatly appreciate a simple step by step guide of how and what to insert in the navbar template for it to appear on the main page

I actually have the same question - the auto add did not work, but going to the link http://gamegeekspeak.com/forums/misc.php?do=topposters
Shows the page.
If somoen can post it here, or a link to it in the site elsewehere - how do we manually add links to the QLinks or navbar?

You both have customised navbars, so the link add will fail. By the same reasoning I cannot tell you exactly how to edit your styles. You need to add a link to misc.php?do=topposters is all I can really tell you.
Any ideas how I fix this? Thanks for your help! You appear to have no usergroups specified in the Top Posters > Included User Groups setting (vbulletin options).

Please see post #132.
v3.27 - fixed the table index creation - the index was not being created on install - on larger forums this will speed up the queries this runs.

Thanks for this. I installed for the first time and it did create the quick link but nothing shows up at my sites address: http://www.ncangler.com/forums/misc.php?do=topposters

Okay I got it. I need to revert the templates to make it work. :) One caviat though. The automatic script creates the link www.mysite.com/misc.php?do=topposters and my forum location is actually www.mysite.com/forums/misc.php?do=topposters
I know I can go in and manually add the /forums but was wondering if there was something I could do to allow the automatic script to handle it. Thanks for this mod!
Wow, my first install of a product and it's wonderful! Thanks :)

The Navbar Quick Link works when in the forums page but from any CMPS page the menu link does not include the "/forums" path. I thought adding "misc.php" to the CMPS Navbar replacements would take care of it but it doesn't. Does anyone else have an idea how to make this work with the CMPS navigation in Quick Links? Thanks for any help.

apologies for I have not gone through the last 10 pages to see if the question was asked (and answered).
but is it possible to display who are the top posters and thread starters in a particular forum ??
No, that is not possible with this.
Version 3.29 has had the usergroups option enhanced - you can choose to include or exclude the list of usergroups (or include all usergroups).
How do I remove the link from the quick links menu where it was inserted automatically?

25 Jan 2007, 16:43
ok it's installed
However, when I do the auto link for my navbar it does not work. I am also using CMPS and it does not show up there either. I read the earlier post about changing the code for it but I still have the problem with both navbars.
I'm using zoints on my site as well and using option to put "my blog" link in navbar. However, I clicked that option off and still no top posters link. Other then that I have not done any direct customization.
any suggestions????
If you use a custom style then the chances are it will fail, you will have to add a link manually.

Any chance of seeing a feature that will remove non-active users from the list ?
Nope, not much chance of that.
You could always move your inactive users to a custom usergroup and exclude that group.

Well, I downloaded the zipfile, unzipped it, used the product manager to add the mod, but it is not working. Did I leave out a step? I installed it yesterday. Also, I'm very new to computers, so if I've skipped an obvious step, please advise. Thanks.
What you did sounds correct. Since you have no links to your site, what do you mean by "not working" ?

Well, what I mean is nothing is showing up on the index.php page. Here is our forum:
http://www.raptureforums.com/forum/index.php
I see the mod in the products manager page and everything, it's just that I don't see anything on the stats area down on the bottom on the index page. Am I suppose to do something else in the admincp? I'm new to doing mods, so I'm not sure if I've missed something?
Thanks for the help. :)
This does not add anything to the homepage (except a link in the Navbar if enabled) - the information is listed on a new page ;

You don't appear to have it installed atm as that link just defaults to the smilies.

Thanks.
If you are adding a link manually, you need to point it at misc.php?do=topposters

Great mod. Thanks.
Would either of the following be possible, and if so, how would I do this?
1. Left align the data in each column instead of it being centered.
2. Format the text, ie: smaller font size.

I'm running a posting contest, so I reset all the post counts for all the users to 0, but the mod still shows figures for everyone, is it possible to have the stats reset to zero ? Then after the contest get it back to 'normal' ?
No.
This counts the actual posts, the only way to get zero would be to delete the posts !

Paul, would it be possible to have an option (ie. Count photopost comments yes/no) or an add-on to this mod that would count posts in photopost gallery also? I'm in the middle of a posting contest and the contest is being based on stats from your mod. However, the individual user counts increase every time they commend on a photo, but they remain unchanged under the top posters. Just curious - it would be really nice. I'll gladly chip in a donation if you can do this.

Installed thank you, Paul ..
Could you please add usergroup tags using fetch_musername() function?
Please add that Paul .. or at least tell me how to do so.
It would be a great thing if this mod could post a new thread or announcement under the name of forum founder and/or administrator, every end of month:
"Our Top Posters, April 2007"
What do you think?
musername is deliberately not used as it makes the display look awful, esp on some forums.
There is no chance that ths will ever post a new thread, it was designed purely for real time display, nothing more.
Thank you I understand now ..

Questions:
Are all the stats calculated on the fly everytime the topposters page is requested?
Or are stats just updated periodically, like once a day?
If only periodic updates, is there a cron job that runs and where is it defined?
Is there a server load encountered during install (as it calculates stats)?
Any known issues with php 4 vs. 5?
Any known issues with mysql 4 vs. 5?We have ~2.5 million posts and ~25K posts/week.
Thanks in advance.

I uninstalled and installed again, then realized that the Quicklinks link works from forum pages but not from the vBadvanced CMPS home page. So I need to add the /forums/ to the path. But I'm not sure where to do this. Is this the line of code that the script adds to the Quicklinks:
$template_hook[navbar_quick_links_menu_pos2]
If so can I just change this to something like:

Where could I edit the template hook to add the path statement or URL to make the new version work? Thanks for this great tool!
You need to edit the plugin (Top Posters (1)) to change misc.php to /forums/misc.php
I'll probably edit this in a future version to make the path an option in the settings.

Clicking top posters after recent upgrade now takes me to my smilie page and this error :-
/home/f/o/forums/public_html/forums/misc.php(96) : eval()'d code on line 1313
First, re-install it.
If that fails, uninstall and re-install it.
If that fails then you will need to disable all other modifications using the misc_start hook - if the error still occurs then post it, as it will show the correct line number that is causing the error.
Thanks Paul .. found the problem. It was created by this hack (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=156444&page=6).
