View Full Version : Ignore Thread: Allow Users to Ignore Threads of Their Choosing
calorie
25 Sep 2006, 04:55
As originally described, this hack adds an "Ignore Thread" option to the thread tools menu and generates a list of threads you have ignored in your UserCP. Basically it allows your users to ignore threads of their choosing, preventing said threads from showing up in forumbit, forumdisplay, and search results.
Import one product and edit two templates. Fully phrased. No PHP file edits. Tested on vB 3.6.1. Ported with permission. The original is here (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=69261).

sounds good, does it have an option to allow which usergroups can do this, and which forums are excluded from ignoring?

I don't mean this as criticism, but what's the point? Can a user just ignore a thread by ummm...ignoring it? If you don't want to read it, don't open it.

Thanks for the thanks. :)
@hornstar1337: there are no such options
@tazB.ca: time is always a factor; lots of things I could but probably won't do
@steelerwatch: help control urge to click, avoid seeing thread title: 3x@mPL3!
@dirtycrow: there's Selective Forum Filter (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=98360)

OK all you gurus...another question.
Do any of you use VBPortals? I love this mod but the ignored threads still show up in the active thread listings on my portal page. Is there anybody here who can help with that?

I coulnd't find the asnwer.. so I am going to ask you :)
Do you already know if it is possible to exclude threads from ignoring (for example: important admin threads)?

This is a great feature, thank you.
However, only one "problem". With the "ignore subforum in New Posts" one can define which usergroups who can use the feature. There should be something like this integrated in this add-on ass well.
Especially so that users who are moderators can't ignore threads.

Anyone know of a mod that allows this functionality automatically by user ignore?
Meaning.. if a user ignores a particular user.. they would like to ignore the entire thread started by that user. Any ideas?
Thx

Looks like a great hack :)
I have a few questions:
Does this hack also ignore admin/moderator threads if members choose to?
Is this hack also compatible with 3.6.4?

Is this hack also compatible with 3.6.4?
Yes. I just installed it.
However, one of my members just sent me this advisory:
On the home page, the title of the thread can still be viewed, unless it's replaced by another more recent thread. If one clicks on the title of the thread it can be viewed in it's entirety even tho the "ignore thread" option is activated.
Can anyone suggest a workaround for this? This isn't a portal by the way - just the basic vBulletin forum index page.

Would this be able to be ammended to say something like..
Disable or Ignore all threads that have the Thumbs up icon in it? I have one root thread with all topics for 3 different systems in it. When you post a thread in the news item you need to select a post ICON. one for 360, one for Wii and one for PS3 so if you dont care about 360 news you could ignore anything post using the 360 icon?? Would this also exclude them from searchs??

If you want to exclude forum from their new posts searches there are seperate mods for that.

I have a very large messageboard with well over 100 forums in it. It is an rpg site with a separate forum for each rpg game. What I would like to see is a mod like this one that allows for my users to ignore forums that they are not involved in. That is why I want the "ignore forums" option.

That's what I want to know too - it's kind of critical. Anybody know?
If you ignore a thread, can you "un-ignore"? Making it re-appear?

Lovely hack - well done! :)
Not sure how hard it would be and therefore if you would want payment for it, but there is something else that could be included in this that I would find extremely useful.
Moderators upwards being able to set a thread to be ignored by a certain user. Obviously that thread would not appear in their ignored threads list, but instead in some listing in the Mod panel. This would be rather like banning from a thread, but actually be much more effective because that user doesnt get the constant reminder they have been acted against.
Simply perfect for members who have started an arguement on an established thread.
My site is non profit, but I would gladly fork some cash out of my own pocket to see this available to me and others.
Harley
harley, I agree I wasnt really that interested in this mod until the point you brought up, it would make for a very nice implentation of a per-post moderation system to be able to do that.
I would gladly help donate some money to this effort out of my pocket being non-profit myself, but realizing how useful this could be for us.

Well tinycp - let's hope we can capture the enthusiasm (or greed!) of the developer!
It would turn this mod from being just a useful addition for members to being a useful addition to members and a HUGE improvement to moderating any vb forum. I could not even count the number of instances where being able to do this would have helped me out.

For anyone who is interested, I wanted to add this to the forumdisplay as well. This way it could be ignored without having to go into the thread if the user wants, it also prompts them, just in case. Here's how I did it:
In the threadbit template find
<if condition="$show['moderated'] OR $show['deletedthread'] OR $show['paperclip'] OR $show['subscribed'] OR $show['sticky'] OR $show['rexpires']">
Add this just above it
<span style="float:$stylevar[right]">
<a href="javascript:decision('Are you sure you want to ignore this thread?',
'profile.php?$session[sessionurl]do=ignorethread&threadid=$thread[threadid]&forumid=$thread[forumid]')"><img class="inlineimg" src="$stylevar[imgdir_misc]/hide.gif" alt="Ignore this thread" border="0" /></a>
</span>
Now add this to the header template at the very bottom
<!-- Confirm Ignore Thread -->
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="Javascript">
<!---
function decision(message, url){
if(confirm(message)) location.href = url;
}
// --->
</SCRIPT>
<!-- /Confirm Ignore Thread -->
Add the attached hide.gif (x) image to your images/misc directory

I checked and rechecked each style.
I checked and rechecked each style.
Then check your source code and see what is showing up there. Or, put something next to it like the letter X (in your template) and see if it shows up on the page. Maybe you are putting it in a conditional and the condition isn't correct so it isn't showing up. (There are two template edits to do. One in showthread and the other in usercp_shell.)
i re-did my template edits and now it is showing up in my user cp list of side bar left options. weird, it wasn't before, but now it is..

Folks, I've had this mod installed for a long time. I'm running 3.7 now and I swear that it was working but now the option to ignore thread is not showing up in the Thread Tools dropdown.
I checked and discovered that the template edit was missing. I must have missed it during an upgrade at some point. I re-edited the Showthread template though and the option still does not show up in the drop down. I have the "Ignored Threads" link in the UserCP but nowhere for a user to actually add a thread to their ignored list.
Did something change in 3.7 that requires a different edit in the Showthread template? I would really like to get this working again. I even tried re-installing the product but it still doesn't work.
