View Full Version : Proxy IP to real IP conversion

vBulletin 3.7 Version
Please remember to click Mark as Installed if you use this modification.
Support questions from members who have not marked this as installed will be considered low priority.

This hack makes the forum always use the members real ip when a proxy is detected, meaning that all existing ip functions should continue to work, basically ignoring the proxy server (other than recording it's presence).

i.e.

* The real ip (or host) is displayed in the who's online page.
* The real and proxy server ip's are accesible for each post, the button is red for members using a proxy server.
* The real ip is searchable in the admin/mod cp (but not the proxy ip).
* The real ip can be banned by admins.

etc etc ......

Note: Obviously this hack relies on the proxy server passing the correct http variables to allow detection.

If a proxy is detected, then a red ip icon is displayed instead of the standard one. This mod will also detect if the ipinfo hack is installed and adjust itself to call the ipinfo code.

History:

v3.7.001 : Initial release for vbulletin 3.7 beta.
v3.7.002 : Fix px.gif - Update install data for 3.7.
v3.7.003 : Installation Code Updated.

Remember that this modification involves changes to the class_core.php file - if you upgrade your vbulletin, you must reapply those changes.

I have just instaled this mod in my board, but when i tryed to post some post using http://anonymouse.org , my messages have still 'anonymous.org' IP adress. I can`t see a 'proxy icon' anywhere.

Maybe there is some options in ACP to activate this hack? I have just changed class_core.php file and imported icon and product.

Anonymous proxy servers do not pass on any such details for pretty obvious reasons, they wouldnt be very anonymous if they did.

Oh - believe me - that's a pure waste of time. That module requires that a proxy uses the HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR variables which some proxies do, others not.
By reading that variable it's possible to find the real IP but with a Webserver Module - at least for Apache, dunno about others, you can do the same.
Just - point is - just do a Search in your favorite Search Engine for "anonymous proxies" and you'll find a lot of them, most of them are non working. Problem is just that having a blocklist you need to update to add or remove proxies, well, a waste of time.
I just want to say that it's nearly impossible to block all proxies without a false positive and we shouldn't forget that there're still countries in this world which block sites - these people need proxies to bypass any filters to access the web freely.

What works for spam filters in blacklisting dynamic IP's doesn't make sense everywhere else - sorry

If you are referring to the update today then no, just the product xml was updated slightly (to detect the 3.7 version of ipinfo as well).

Bear in mind that not many proxy servers pass on these details now.

JFYI, this was originally written for Cable Forum four years ago because the UK ISP that our forum is about (ntl as was, now called Virgin Media) used to force all its customers to browse via transparant proxy servers that did pass on these details. This is no longer the case but I have continued to maintain it anyway. Its quite likely that when vb4 comes out I will probably not bother porting it anymore.

Paul,

I installed PL2 this morning, and then this mod. I followed your instructions exactly how you have them. When I went to install / import the product, the system was hanging... I've had this happen once before with a theme, and I found that if you hit back and then try to reinstall it again very quickly that it will go through.

The problem I ran into, is I got a DB Error. If I go to the products pay it says it's installed... So I'm curious what i can do to test to see if it's working. Or if I should uninstall / reinstall.

Thanks for the help,

Paul M
20 Jun 2008, 17:24
If you have a very large Post table then it may seem to hang for quite a while as this adds a field to that table. If its installed, and seems to be working then probably best to leave it as is. You could check the Post table to see if the proxy_ip field has been added ok.

OK - so I tested this mod using http://proxy.paradox-productions.net
1st I tried browsing my own profile via the proxy site - see the pic below:

http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/779/ipbq2.gif

I suppose in the Who's Online page - the px.gif graphic doesn't show.
The interesting thing is that the proxy IP showed up - My IP address did not show on the Who's online page. So then - I tested by posting in the JPiC Staff Zone.... The px.gif graphic didn't show either and clicking on the regular IP graphic showed an IP address of 77.243.225.164 - circe.xynta.nl --- instead of my own IP address

So - question. What have I done wrong? I had expected that my IP address would show on both accounts. Am I misunderstanding what this modification does?

Thanx,

Jacquii.

this fixed it for me:

with:
if($real_ip != $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']) return $real_ip;

harlita
14 Sep 2008, 10:34
Come2Daddy - depending on the HTML/PHP editor you are using, the find-function is likely not searching the entire document from top down with each find request. And that can easily throw a person off.

In otherwords, you likely were able to complete Step 1, but once you got to Step 2, it couldn't find the code you entered in.

If that is the case, try going thru it again, but after you complete Step 1, scroll back up to the very top and physically click on the first line of the file. Once you see the cursor flashing there, try the search for the code in Step 2 again.

I'm running 3.7.3 forums (few of them XD) and this code works as a brand new install (not sure how I overlooked it prior).

Thanks Paul M :) Another great job.

Within the file edits you will find a line that says ;

Code:
---------------
Code is only visible to licensed users, and only when logged into the forums.
---------------

Change that to true and it will exclude those private ranges.

You have made an error in editing class_core.php

but i copied and pasted the exact codes in the instructions

Well im afraid the instructions are correct, so you must have made a mistake somewhere, take a fresh copy and do them again, making sure you dont accidently delete an extra bracket or something. :)

Oh, since I upgraded to 3.7.4, it alwasy shows a red icon and instead of showing the "detected" IP, it dispalys the word "PROXYIP".

I do not use a proxy, so something needs to be updated, I think.

I think you forgot this ;

Remember that this modification involves changes to the class_core.php file - if you upgrade your vbulletin, you must reapply those changes.

I get this error when I tried to create a new thread

nvm it was the "Answer Forums" mod causing the problem.

There is already px.gif located in my styles. Do I overwrite it with yours?

Paul M

I would guess its probably mine anyway - px.gif is not something that exists in standard styles.

They do exist and they came with these styles. They are attached.

Like I said, px.gif is not a standard vb image/file, I cant imagine why those styles would have one, the only time they would get used is if you have this mod installed. Perhaps they were created for someone who originally did.

When you click on the "IP" button on any post it brings up the "User IP Information" page with all that users' IP addresses that he/she used. Here is where it is located in the below attachment.

That is not standard vb functionality.

I use this mod: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=179362

But, the buttons do come with all the styles from vbskinworks.com from what I gather from them.

this looks like a great hack! Sorry for being such a newb, how do I access my "class_core.php" to make the html changes? I can't find anything in my style sheets? I went to style manager --> then clicked on <<>> and looked through everything. Any help please?

Then they have made a decision at some point (either on purpose, or accidently) to add an image that is only used by modifications, not standard vb :)
