What this is and does

LDM is a general-purpose link and file manager, which handles user uploads and downloads in a flexible way. It tracks and can manage users' accesses. It has a number of integrated media players and others are included as plugin extras.

Installation and Usage These are explained in the on-line Wiki (http://www.eirma.org/wikis/index.php/Links_and_Downloads_Manager), with a brief explanation in the file instructions.txt in the release zip. The recent revision history is given in the first post of this thread.

Please use carefully and always do a back up before upgrading. Post reports of problems and suggestions for enhancements in this thread.

22.06.08 Version 2.2.9-post1 - This is the supported version. Includes some bug fixes since 2.2.9 plus the full Chinese, French and Spanish translations (thanks guys). Should work fine with all versions of vb 3.6 and vb 3.7.

27.08.08 Version 2.2.9-post3 - This version, available in this post, provides a number of bug fixes and minor changes, for example in the handling of uploads to integrate properly with attachment permissions set in vbulletin.

19.10.08 Version 2.3.0-beta 1 - Development version, available in this post. For test use. This version 2.3.0 works with vb 3.7, seems to work with vb 3.8 but is no longer fully compatible with vb 3.6

hi Andrew,
i have two requests for the new version (if possible)
1 - could you please make a plugin for LDM that allows me add multiple links for one entry? (useful for freehost linkings, since they don't work with the mirror system)
2 - in vba_modules, could you please add an option to paginate the entries that are shown...
example: i have set 200 entries to show, but want on each page 100 entries...

thanks

Looks as if you've tried to move a version 2.2.6 database straight onto vb 3.7. The upgrade file I provided requires that you are running version 2.2.8 (the latest supported version). Sorry for not making that clear.

a) Grab the full 2.2.8 release from the vb3.6 thread
b) Upload the code (release/forums)
c) Re-upload the includes/local_links_init.php from this thread,
d) Go to the vb3.7 product and plugins page and upload the LDM product installer supplied with the vb3.6 version.

Yes, either with an LDM xml export/import, or simply by copying the relevant LDM database tables to the new database.

Is there anywhere that talks about the default values for "Controls on Which Usergroups can Access Features"? I am testing out this mod, and I have this problem where the administrator can play the files (mp3/video), but when a regular user does it, the first time it plays the file, but the 2nd time it disconnects the user.

When I look in the settings, it shows that an "unregistered" user tried to access the file. However, it was clearly a "registered user". Any ideas?

And is there any where that would show me the default settings for permissions in the LDM? This looks like a cool Mod, just having permission problems when testing it.

Are you using the windows media player jukebox and the Firefox browser? There's a strange problem with this combination - the Microsoft software makes two requests for the file, one time without sending the right cookies, so vbulletin/LDM thinks the request is coming from an unregistered user. I've not been able to get to the bottom of this.

It should appear in the linkbit. In the alpha release, only the standard linkbit displays the attribute value. Once you're satisfied with the layout, etc, I'll include it in all the linkbits.

Another bit of info (not sure if this is explained on the form) - items with negative display orders and items with "Hidden" content are only displayed to usergroups with *can_see_hidden* permission. Items with positive display orders are shown to all usergroups. Currently, all attributes are offered/displayed if created in all categories. In the final version of 2.2.9, it will be possible to show/hide attribute groups on a per-category basis, so that (e.g.) attributes relevant to mp3s are only requested and displayed in the relevant categories.

I'm not sure I understand? Have you got vb36 and 37 running out of the same database?

LDM uses tables in the vb database which (at least by default) are all prefixed local_links. You can patch the includes/local_links_init.php to use a different prefix for these tables but they will be in the same database.

Hi Andrew, here is the chinese translation for v.2.2.9 alpha.

It seems that you forgot to add 29 new phrases to the chinese product file. So I compared it with the english version and added them to the thranslation. Some old translations also have been modified. For I have not installed the new alpha version yet, So I'm not sure if I've translated all the new elements appropriately. I'll make it better when I get to use the new version.

Yes, it's there.

There's a new setting (*length_shortdesc*) which can be set globally (admin/settings) or per category (edit category/control settings) which specifies the length of entries' short descriptions. The short description is used if you choose the short (title+thumb+short description) linkbit for the category (again admin/settings or edit category/control settings). It behaves the way you indicate.

I realise that there's another linkbit described as Short (direct link, no thumb, short description) which does not work as described in the 2.2.9 aplha1.

Perhaps you can just check (LDM/admin/permissions) that you have *can_view_entities* permission.

Do yo mind if I take a look at your site - I'd like to see for myself what's going wrong (admin details :))

Attached is a screen shot of the linkbit with some extras - the alpha 1 code doesn't include images as extras but you will get the general idea

This is still rather new, so it's quite possible that there are bugs. Have you registered at trapvid.com and set up an account with the right ip address?

It's important to enter the urls in the correct format. Try this veoh file.

http://www.veoh.com/videos/v1717492rr86NdWC

Edit the entry as an admin (with *can_view_hidden* LDM permission) and take a look down the bottom of the page at the attributes section. Check that the Trapvid entity contains something that looks sensible (this is automatically created using the response from trapvid).

If none of that works, am happy to take a look.

I've been wondering about that. I'm not sure which is the better approach.
I do not know if that will cause coding difficulties, but it would surely be good if tags connect files and threads on the same topic.

Both from a SEO perspective as from a user/functionality perspective.

Plus this would increase the use of LDM, by forum users. It is always hard to make LDM popular among forum users, because LDM is separated from the forum. Mostly a small portion of forum users use LDM. But with functions that make forum users jump back and forth from forum to LDM, the use of LDM becomes more natural or incorporated into general forum use.

This is the reason why I have asked for these functions as options in the past:
- the comments function, to be replaced by forum posts
- reputation functions for LDM

I can understand that from a programming perspective it is best to keep certain things separated from vb, but where ever integration can be done without causing programming difficulties, this would surely increase the popularity of your software.

Just my 2cents.
Thanks for your great software.

If none of that works, am happy to take a look.

i saw the entity and enter the messy url in the browser, it responded. the veoh file still keep loading, then i tried in Firefox and Opera and it played, it is IE problem i think, thanx.

Ah....

I've read that there are some problems with the IE cache and flash. I thought I'd worked round it, but you are the second person to report this problem. I need to look into it.

Dear Andrew, I've been looking in JW forum about the Veoh files not being able to play in IE, some people have it too but it's solvable with normal html code. I just don't know how to solve it with LDM. I'll read more and will PM you if I have found anything helpful, I need it solve as badly as anyone.

As a user how can I upload a file using browse, select and upload.(similar to add thread)

Where is the field???

Do I need to make it active using admincp??

step 1:

By default (i.e. as first installed) uploads are disbled in LDM, so the first step for the admin is to enable them (LDM/admin/settings/Controls on File Uploads) You have to specify the directory where the uploaded files will be stored (unlike vb itself, which by default stores attachments in the database).

step 2:

You mustalso decide which filetypes can be uploaded. By default, LDM will accept any filetypes that are listed in the VB/admin/attachments table. Standard users will be able to upload files up to the size limits given in that table; admins can upload up to the maximum size permitted by your php site configuration.

LDM will *not* accept uploads of filetypes that are not listed in that table, so if there are particular filetypes you need, you have to add them, along with correct 'mimetype' information. There's a LDM extra (see the extras directory in the release) which will do this for most of the common filetypes automatically), or you can do the job by hand

step 3

You need to give the desired usergroups permission to upload (LDM/admin/permissions/can_upload_files)

After you've done this, the 'add entry' form will include options to browse and upload.

Ther can be problems with step 1 depending on your site configuration, but it's possible to work around these in most cases.

If yes ... I had some problem with folders by 777 permision... because these folders are not safe .

how is the security ?

If you want an absolutely secure site, then you must give people the absolutely minimum access that they need. However, if you want to let them share files, then there has to be somewhere to store these files. vbulletin's standards solution (for attachments) of storing the contents of the files in the database is fine for a relatively small number of relatively small files, but is not useful for a general purpose file exchange site.

You should certainly think carefully about where you create the upload/download folder and what types of file you will allow people to upload. But there's no need to open up your entire site. Giving open access permissions to a folder does not mean that you are giving people freedom to do anything they like. They still have to gain access.

Your web server has to be able to create and then read the files and directories in which the uploads are stored. This means that it has to be writeable by PHP. The easiest way to do this is CHMOD it 777, although some other mode may be possible depending on how your server is built.

Generally, it is not recommended that folders that are CHMODed 777 are stored within your web root. LDM works perfectly well if the upload/download folder is located above the document root, provided other security settings on your server allow this. (This prevents people from having any direct access) You tell LDM whereabouts things to be stored (outside the web root/inside the web root) by using the <em>local_file_root</em> and <em>local_file_root_prefix</em> settings in LDM's admin settings page.

It's a good idea to place the upload folder( with CH Mode 777 ) above the document root.

also it can be protected by .htaccess ,,,,,

Yes, it's there.

There's a new setting (*length_shortdesc*) which can be set globally (admin/settings) or per category (edit category/control settings) which specifies the length of entries' short descriptions. The short description is used if you choose the short (title+thumb+short description) linkbit for the category (again admin/settings or edit category/control settings). It behaves the way you indicate.

I realize that there's another linkbit described as Short (direct link, no thumb, short description) which does not work as described in the 2.2.9 aplha1.

Thanks but is there anyway to simply have it where we can use the modern template and all we need to do is replace the link for the image/title which is also a direct link, to go to here: http://www.pspcrazy.com/forums/local_links.php?action=ratelink&linkid=319&catid=15&lpage=1 or the page that allows users to comment directly, as I'm going for a all out social type site with comments, and all integrated in one area.

Is it possible to do that? Modern with a link to this page: http://www.pspcrazy.com/forums/local_links.php?action=ratelink&linkid=319&catid=15&lpage=1 that's all i really need as the new short seems a bit too minimal for my own preferences. Thanks

You have to enable uploading via the ldm/admin/settings pages and then give the relevant usergroups upload permission via the ldm/admin/permissions page

There will be new phrases to translate, certainly. I will not finalise 2.2.9 until vb 3.7 becomes reasonably solid - parts of the vb interface code have changed between their beta releases. As for the move from alpha to beta - there will be at least one more alpha once I've got all the new functionality coded - this code is mainly written, but I got a bit distracted over Christmas with the video site integration.

It's not implemented yet - I'll take a look. There's a couple of potential traps - categories do not need to have unique names and the names can include bbcodes, etc.

Not as far as I know - you're trying the new 'oxygen' icons? I've just run a test and both the category and category_new icons display fine. Bear in mind that the new icons are pngs and you can't put them in the same directory as the old gif icons (i.e. upload them into another directory or delete the old icons).

This is a conflict with vcharset.

You can fix it by changing the definition of update_settings and the calls to it in LDM. This is done in 2.2.9. In 2.2.8, you need to edit the following files:

local_links_actions.php(2508): if (!update_settings($catid, $_REQUEST, $errors)) {

local_links_actions.php(2712): if (!update_settings($catid, $_REQUEST, $errors)) {

local_links_admin.php(1171): update_settings(-1, $_REQUEST, $errors);

includes\local_links_misc.php(399): function update_settings($catid, $settings, &$errors) {

includes\local_links_misc.php(797): ldm_general_failure("update_settings/$name");

Just change update_settings to update_ldm_settings

I just uploaded the prefix_forum_new.gif and prefix_forum_old.gif to the uploads folder and entered the files into LDM's admin.

Currently, the code assumes that all icons are being specified relative to the forum directory and there's no check whether this is in fact the case - I realise that this is inconsistent with the handling of other directories such as uploads and thumbsdir. Either create a new image subdirectory somewhere underneath the forums or just drop your icons into your regular LDM icons dir.

If you do the first, specify the category icon in the form my/new/icon/subdir/mycaticon.gif

If you do the second, specify myiconsdir/mycaticoncat.gif

LDM should take care of this fine. If you are using version 2.2.9, edit the category of interest, choose the user permissions tab, and take away *can_view_category* permission from all usergroups except sponsors (and perhaps admins, etc). Or, with version 2.2.8 or 2.2.9, associate the category with a forum which is only visible to the sponsors usergroup

Hello

You can transfer the database in two ways - either use an sql utility to backup all the tables called "local_" and import these into your new database. This will transfer all settings

LDM also has an xml export/import facility on the admin page. The xml file contains all information on your categories and entries but (at least not until the final version of 2.2.9) the admin settings.

The transfer will retain the usernames and userids from the source machine. Of course these may not correspond to usernames and userids on the new machine. Depending on the number of users who have submitted entries, this would be a fairly quick task to fix using a bit of sql. Its not yet included as one of the 'mass edit' features in LDM.

Yes, you simply go to the ldm admin and reapply the settings you want

There will be no problems with userids - just mismatches between the displayed usernames and the current ones - as far as I can see

The basic logic in 2.2.8 is to email group a) plus group b)
a) if the category has an associated forum, then the email reports get sent to the moderators of that forum;
b) the report gets sent to all users with some level of vb admincp permissions

I am making a change between 2.2.8 and 2.2.9. In 2.2.8, group (b) is always selected.

In 2.2.9, group (b) is only selected if there are *no* associated forum* moderators *and* you have set *send post reports* on your vb admincp to email admins and moderators. In addition, in 2.2.9, the email will be sent to all users in groups that have LDM *can_moderate_links* permission in the respective category. (I think they should always have received these emails, but I seem to have overlooked them.)

I'm open to suggestions, within reason.

It is possible to close a category so that it will not accept new entries, but it is not currently possible to define a category in the way that vb does.

However, in 2.2.9, it will be possible to give subtitles for groups of entries (and groups of categories) with the same display orders.

Again, I am open to suggestions, within reason.

Thanks for the quick response!

It would be helpful to be able to manually set which usergroups or useres are able to receive these reports, either in a text list (like the vB lists 5,7,23,26 of users) or as one of the permissions settings separate from 'can moderate links'.

We for example have admins, forum moderators, and people who you could call 'content mods' for different types of content, all of which we'd want to be able to moderate links, but not necessarily all of them we'd want to be able to moderate *all* links. It would be helpful to have a setting for that, if it's possible.

I am having trouble with X-PHP-Script: /forum/local_links_actions.php
Somehow spammers manage to use this to send out bulk spam. I have already limited the can_send_to_friend permission to members only, but now I am experiencing the same again. Is there another setting that needs to be changed? Can you please add human verification to the send to friend form?

We got hit by something very similar a few weeks ago. I've added human verification to the next alpha - sorry that it's taking time to appear.

Yes, I know that trapvid closed down. Most irritating, given that I devoted much of my Christmas vacation to this!

Use this:
Version 2.2.8

The 2.2.8 release version of LDM, available in this thread, works correctly in most respects.

To use this version, install (or keep) the 2.2.8 code and replace the initialisation file with the includes/local_links_init.php file attached to this thread. I have found only one problem, which is with the member profile integration features in LDM.

I'm pleased to report that (all being well) the next version of LDM will be uploaded some time this week for testing.

This is a quite substantial rewrite of the code to implement a consistent function naming scheme and (hopefully) avoid conflicts with other hacks. In addition, these features are implemented:

- a flash based uploader with progress bar, handling uploads to 100MB
- nominations for 'entry of the month/year/etc'
- new statistics options and a redesign of the statistics layouts on the home page
- an optional collapsible category explorer display (see attached image)
- extensions to the filmstrip extra to include various hit parades on home page.

and so on.

Give the extent of the changes, and the fact that more work is still needed to interface fully with VB3.7, this release will remain alpha code for some time still.

Has anyone tried the gold release of vbadvanced 3.0? I'm having problems with modules on windows (but not on Linux).

Do you have full access to your web server? If not, you will have to ask your service provider to handle the changes on your behalf.

Assuming that you do have full access:

a) locate the php.ini file (e.g. vb/admincp/maintenance/php info)
b) download the file and edit a copy:

find the line starting post_max_size and edit, e.g.
post_max_size = 16M

find the line starting upload_max_filesize and edit, e.g.
upload_max_filesize = 16M

save and upload

restart your web server software (e.g. apache)

php.ini is a file on your server. The vb admincp/php info usually tells you where to find it. However, if you don't have full access to your server, you will not be able to access and modify it.

As far as I know (e.g. http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum88/9393.htm), you can make these changes in an htaccess file.

Not sure - there are several possible reasons - strangely I had someone else with this problem yesterday.

Things to check

- Have you got the GD graphics library available on your server (go to LDM/admin and take a look at the message about GD2 on the left margin)

- Are the thumbs being displayed as broken images (try IE as Firefox doesn't show them)

- Have you set a non-zero size for thumbs (LDM/admin/settings)

- Do they work non-cached (clear the thumbs directory on LDM/admin/settings, clear any existing thumbs (ldm/admin/statistics)). If so, the problem may be with the cache directory.

If this doesn't help, get back to me and we can investigate further.

LDM gives a warning if open_basedir is set. There's no problem provided you organise things properly. open_basedir is a security restriction on where you can read/write files on your server.

The second point is dealt with by increasing memory_limit in your php.ini.

On your second post, yes I'd noticed that also.

The javascript for the explorer view is capable of handling an ajax-like 'expand on demand', which should reduce the memory requirement considerably (assuming that you haven't got a weird category structure). I am thinking about how to make that available. Currentyly, the whole tree is loaded.

Hello,
How are you sir, i hope you are fine.
Hello,
Thanks for this fantastic mod, it's a great mod really.

I have a question:
I need to: Create a main category called "Backup" & create sub-categories inside it for each customer, each sub-cat for one customer & is synchronized with a directory on the server, each sub-cat also is specified to a specific customer & so he can't (see/access) any (sub-cats/cat's content) except the one specified for him (Customers can't see others sub-cats / Like: users can't see others threads).

Is there any way doing this using LDM or extras supplied with it?
If no, so how can I do it as a custom work, if you can help with some code snippets or as least the coding principal, I would appreciate your effort.

Thanks

The synchronising is straightforward and already built in.

The other part, visibility/access to given user only, is not currently available (I don't think :) - this is getting a bit complex), but not hard to add. I will include it in the next release, which should be available (at least in beta form) quite soon, depending on how much food I eat this week.

Is there any news regarding this?
Also: Is there a way to do the same procedure for items in some categories? i mean "User can't see others items, is it possible?

Most of it is done in the 2.2.9 alpha. There's a couple of bits I need to finish off regarding teh synchronisation. The basic feature is the *can_view_category* permission, which is new in 2.2.9. Since users can always see their own entries/categories, by removing this permission you can deny users the right to see anything else. This can be applied on a per-category basis.

It's quite possible and I'm happy to try to get to the bottom of this if I can. As people ask for more and more features, there is more code to execute.

Ideally, this is the way to test on your site, if you are willing:

- enable debug in vbulletin by editing includes/config.php and adding the following line somewhere near the bottom:

Code:
---------------
Code is only visible to licensed users, and only when logged into the forums.
---------------

This will add a 'debug information' down the bottom of every vb page, with summary information about time and database accesses. This will give the first hint. If you then click on the hyperlink on the number of database accesses, you will get a very complete summary of where vbulletin is spening its time.

If you can compare the two versions of LDM and send me the details, then I have something to work with. I will try my own tests in the meantime.

Thanks for this. As far as I can tell, it works if you enable the (new in 2.2.9) admin option that requires users to confirm thread creation, but not if everything is fully automatic. The bug has been there from alpha-1. Will investgate and fix.

You can use this hack to let people upload files or you can use it to let them provide links to files that are held on other servers. It's up to you. You can disable uploads altogether or on a per-usergroup basis.

I did some quick tests on a database with a few dozen categories and a few thousand entries.

With LDM's home page statistics turned off, 2.2.8 and 2.2.9 seem pretty well identical in speed.

However, 2.2.9 has more home page stats options, and these can be quite expensive. I'll take a look at the code to see if they can be speeded up.

There is no actual error though? All that happens is I type in mydomain.com/forum/local_links.php on internet explorer and it says my domain has a database error (the default main vbulletin DB error you get sometimes). Something just seems dodgy with the compatibility of IE and the database for LDM.

I think you'll find the problem is fixed by uploading this file into your forum/includes directory. The problem is not with IE, it's with users who do/do not have moderate permission, and an undeclared global variable relating to moderation. I can reproduce the bug that you report.

Thank you so much. :D It's working right now.

EDIT: Now I have an issue with the jukebox lol. It loads up fine and looks good etc but it won't play any files at all. At it also says 0.00 time/0%.

I know the file has definitely uploaded in the entry because I can download it.

I'll need a bit more information to help. Which file types, which media player, etc. Does it not work/work with mp3s, wmas, etc? Am happy to take a look at your if you want.

I have all the default settings that you set up. I added an mp3 extension to the attachments.
I upload the mp3 file and when I went to play it, the jukebox windows comes up but nothing plays and it doesn't look like there is anything to play.

However I am definitely sure the file does upload because I clicked the option to download it and it works.

hi Andrew,
i have two requests for the new version (if possible)
1 - could you please make a plugin for LDM that allows me add multiple links for one entry? (useful for freehost linkings, since they don't work with the mirror system)
2 - in vba_modules, could you please add an option to paginate the entries that are shown...
example: i have set 200 entries to show, but want on each page 100 entries...

thanks
one more request or better to say addition to JW Player:D
take a look at here please: http://www.jeroenwijering.com/?item=JW_WMV_Player
if possible, i want this play the WMV files instead of wmp

thanks in advace

hi Andrew,
is this feature implemented in the ldm-2.2.9?
SEO: Ability to use category names instead of the category ID numbers for SEO purposes (local_links/links/17 => local_links/links/music/); Add SEO ability to paging and category jumping links.

would be very helpful to have this
thanks

Truly amazing mod that's for sure, thanks for adding what I need. Only complaint I got left is how do I get rid of the bars in between the categories randomly?

http://www.pspcrazy.com/forums/local_links.php : The separators shouldn't be there. Now If only there was that SEO feature mentioned above in there, then I'd be in heaven :) Awesome mod for sure.

The category bars aren't random. They appear between groups of categories with different 'display orders'. I'm at a hotel PC at present, so can't check the code, but I think you get rid of these altogether by editing the links_linkseparator template. I'll post a follow-up message later.

I did some quick tests on a database with a few dozen categories and a few thousand entries.

With LDM's home page statistics turned off, 2.2.8 and 2.2.9 seem pretty well identical in speed.

However, 2.2.9 has more home page stats options, and these can be quite expensive. I'll take a look at the code to see if they can be speeded up.
i think i found the reason why LDM gets slow....
ONLY on pages, where i have set display order for each category, LDM slow down. in other cases it's working as fast as 2.2.8 or maybe faster....

EDIT:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function ldm_lookup_forum_protections() in /home/********/public_html/forums/includes/local_links_vbafunc.php on line 26

Your second problem is caused by mixed code - the local_links_vbafunc.php file was introduced in 2.2.9. I imagine you've got the 2.2.9 vba modules installed.

I will try to pin down the first problem - the code in question is trying to strip bbcodes and is looping indefinitely.

I installed 2.2.9 and its so close to perfect for what I need. It addresses almost everything that I wanted in 2.2.8. Is there any word on if playlists will be available with the JW flv player? I wonder if would be easy since I think the JW mp3 player accepts playlists.

Thanks!

i'm not sure but i think it would be enough to add XML to the player file types for JW media player ( Filetypes handled: mp3, xml) + maybe you will need to add it in vb attachment table

interesting, Ill give that a shot, thanks!

It almost works, I added it to the attachment table and also the media player and it brings up the flv player but it acts like it cant find the videos, the videos are in the same folder and the xml is just calling the filename like normal. Anyone know why its not working?

maybe because the files are not in the forum root.
try to put a full url of your video in the xml files

RikiB
05 Mar 2008, 00:57
ahh, I really need to avoid that..its imperative that I use the "stream" feature.

do you mean full server url, like home/usernane/public_html

Rouzbeh1
05 Mar 2008, 01:04
as far as i know videos are downloadable with several tools if one wants to download them.
but LDM is streaming the files, so it normally shouldn't give out the url.

i your files are on the same webspace, try linking files like this example:

video.flv is in: /home/user/public_html/some/folder/video.flv
and forum is in: /home/user/public_html/forums/
link to file will be : ../some/folder/video.flv

I want it to be as secure as possible, I even tried using orbit downloader with the stream option on a single FLV and it failed to download it...very encouraging. I also tried pointing to /home/use/download in the xml and it didnt seem to work, Ill keep trying

There are some sensitivities with this - I think I got them sorted out for direct streaming of mp3s, flvs and swfs - as I recall, it's about getting the paths correct as far as the flash is concerned, and ensuring everything is properly urlencoded so that the javascript doesn't croak. I'll take a look at the playlist code to see if they will work with streams.
