This hack extends the existing reputation display system from just the light/dark green pips to green and golden pips, and then a series of bronze, silver and gold stars as the pips limit is reached.

The dark green pips are followed by light green pips, which are then followed by gold pips. When the limit these can display is reached, the (prefix) display of stars begins - starting with the bronze stars, then silver stars and finally gold Stars. If your reputation is zero then the neutral grey pip is displayed. Negative reputations are displayed in a similar manner using light and dark red pips and red stars - however, there is only one star level for negative reputation.

Each time you 'lap' the limit of the pips display, another star is added. The number of each star is limited by an ACP option (by default, 5 bronze = 1 silver, and 5 silver = 1 gold). The number and value of the pips in each group of pips is defined by six settings in the vboptions > reputation options. A line break can be inserted after the stars. The extended display system can be enabled/disabled in the options.

Just follow the install instructions in the zip file to install this product.

Just wanted to put it my plug again for adding one more level of stars - a 'super' star, so to speak. I promise to make the values high enough that I wont make you add a super super star! (lol) If you can make this, I will send you Dr. Pepper products from the USA! We have some cooooolll Dr. Pepper things here :)

Suppa Suppa Star!!

THANKS Paul.

OT.. I tried upping the values of the pips but it didnt change the ones already given. Do I need to rebuild rep? Ifs so will that mess up the users rep count?

Actually yes, there are plans to add another level at some point as I'll be needing it myself.

I just need the time and will power to do it. It should be sometime in the next few months. :)

Quick question - I'm still sporting the 3.6.x version on 3.7. If I install/overwrite, it should keep the same settings, correct?

Thanks again for this - definitely one of my favorite mods.

Star levels increased to three (bronze, silver, gold).

Note that if you upgrade to 3.7.002 then you must upload the images again - also the settings have moved to their own vb options group and will be reset to their default values.

Paul,

Why can't we, we as in someone who knows what they're doing, just change the max value in the PHP file to adjust the maximum amount of pips shown?

Granted, that would change the concept of your tri color pip layout, but wouldn't that be easier to change the max in there, and just go from there?

Paul M

hey paul, any chance of adding in an option for alignment of the stars?

for example, currently they default to start from the left...

it would be great if I could tell it to align the row of stars in the center of the below pips (the way it displays in the member listings)

for example,

http://tehpix.com/tehpix/files/2/centered.png

now I redid my stars... so that they would be 5 point stars that would match the dark green, light green, and gold... but the rest is simply from the memberlist page...

if you arent interested in adding an option for it, would you perhaps be willing to help me find which template that I could edit myself in order to incorporate such a change on my own board? (I cant seem to find it :\ )

note: I am talking about specifically where the rep is displayed in the profile, and in the postbit

For some reason, the reputation stars don't show up correctly. Like someone having 60000 rep points have less stars than someone having 20000 rep points... I didn't like the 3 pictures rep thing so I renamed all the same image to the gold, red, brown stars. Thanks.

Paul M

Stars are not cumulative, if you have 4 bronze and then get enough points for silver, you will just get one silver star, not one silver plus four bronze.

I did everything you said correctly, but it doesn't show any of the reputation images.

Why is that? =/

How could I possibly know that ?

The only answer I can give is that you have missed something.

Scarface Claw
27 Jun 2008, 00:26
I'm in the same boat.

I uploaded the images to images/reputation and imported the XML.

Turned it on in the vBoptions but images do not display.

Using vB 3.7.1 Patch Level 2

EDIT:
I know why, its because I am using a custom style and the style gets its reputation images from its own directory.

/vb/ambience/reputation

How do I work around this?

Paul M
27 Jun 2008, 14:50
Just put the new images in that directory.

good one, thanks

One thing though.

It seems as though the gold and bronze stars are mixed up, it was displaying gold stars when it should have been only displaying bronze ones. I had to change the file names of the gifs to get it to display proper.

Other than that good mod dude, cheers.

My members are starting to hit the Golden stars and they were wondering what happens afterwards... is there any possibility of extending the stars further somehow?

Paul M
02 Aug 2008, 20:11
There are three levels of stars already, there is no chance of any more. I suggest you change the values.

trigatch4

Paul,

Regarding the need for additional star levels... I think I have a solution. Perhaps everything should be on a "scale". For example, suppose you were to rank all users by how many "rep" points they have.

Those in the bottom 25% (with the lowest rep) would get 0 stars. 25-50 would get bronze, 50-75 would get silver and 75-100 would get gold.

Within those levels, the higher up you were, the more stars you'd have. So if you were like the 49th percentile than you would have a row of maybe 8 bronze stars whereas someone with 26 percentile would only have 1 bronze star.

This way, there is a CEILING of reputation. The top user with the MOST rep will have all gold stars and a "scale" will be built around them... with them being the 100th percentile.

There are a bunch of ways to handle this but I just wanted to share this concept with you. Because, anyone who has a forum with some age will eventually have a ton of people with tons of stars and the novelty will kind of "wear off" - or could at least.

This way, you have an ever changing dynamic system for displaying rep that will never get old regardless of how many rep points any one person achieves. I had thought about installing your mod but I know I will run into the same problem as everyone else... and then if you fix it you have to explain to all your members why their hard earned stars have disappeared!

Also, I'd love to see screen shots in your first post. Other than that really... job well done. I'm just offering some ideas and in no way intend to criticize as I think you've done a beautiful job!

awesome mod, but any chance of an option for cumulative stars, so it shows dark green, light green and yellow as well as the stars? Right now it seems to show dark green and light green and the stars if someone has a lot of rep, and seems to skip the yellow gems.

Paul M
30 Sep 2008, 12:33
It does not skip the yellow.

Not sure what else you mean, but either way no changes are planned to this.

Chris-777
08 Oct 2008, 23:37
Can you add counts for negatives as well? I'm not sure what the cause is, but I setup my "ticks" so that they're borderless so that it's a solid bar. It works just peacy for positives, but for negatives the ticks are still spaced out.

Paul M
11 Oct 2008, 17:48
Not really sure what you mean, can you link to an example. There should be no difference between positive and negative (spacing wise).
