There seem to be plenty of default Smilies re-saved or matted for dark backgrounds. What I decided to do was re-create the default theme as PNGs optimized for any color background.
If you're currently using default Smilies, and you'd like to replace them with my smileys, don't delete any of your Smilies just yet.
First, upload these Smileys to your smilies folder.
Second, go into your Admin CP >>> Smilies >>> Smilie Manager, then select the category you keep your default Smilies in. For each Smilie, click Edit and change each instance of .gif to .png.
WHY? Well, what will happen is if you delete Smilies that are currently in use, you'll end up with broken images (Internet Explorer) all over the forum or no images at all (FireFox) where Smilies once were. Smilies use ID number just like everything else on your forum. So changing the URL of each Smilie will retain each instance where their ID was used. Deleting them, will only mean anything new added will obtain new ID numbers. (NOTE: Feel free to delete the GIFs from your directory in your FTP at any time. Where you don't want to delete anything is in your Admin CP.)

Your welcome. Don't forget to mark installed.
Does vB read the .PNG files correctly automatically or do I have to edit my smilies config to make these work?

vB can read them, but not automatically, as it's a completely different file. Just follow the instructions as laid out to make them work.

Currently thinking of adding some of these, but I'm not sure.

You could always give them a test run without deleting your old icons, and then just change the file paths in the Admin CP back if you they don't work out.
amazing smillies thank you :D

Greetings and appreciation to you
I'm supposedly a fairly intelligent person, but...
a) there are no .gif images in my smilies directory, they're already .png (vBulletin 4.1.3)
b) I saved what was there off to another directory and placed these new smilies in their place.
- same old smilies appear on the forum, and in the editor drop-down.
c) I went into the AdminCP and edited each of the smilies in the set, basically changing nothing (because, as I said, they were already .png images)
- same old smilies appear on the forum, and in the editor drop-down.
c) I went into the AdminCP and edited each of the smilies in the set, changing them each to .gif and saving, then changing them to .png and saving again.
- same old smilies appear on the forum, and in the editor drop-down.
- in between the two changes/saves, I saw a "broken graphic" image (as expected) when there was no file (*.gif) by that name in the directory.
d) I stopped and restarted apache.
- same old smilies appear on the forum, and in the editor drop-down.
e) I reverted all of the above changes.
- same old smilies appear on the forum, and in the editor drop-down.
...so, what could be the issue?

...so, what could be the issue? After you upload the new smilies you need to either clear the cache of your browser, or do a hard refresh, and you will then see the new smilies. Hard refresh with f5 for most browsers, I think.
