Admin Log In As User

About this hack:
This hack allows any admin that you set in admin permissions, to log in as any user. You have to go to the user's profile page and there will be a link to 'Log In As This User'. Also, there is a link the drop down menu in the ACP User Manager. If you are logged in as another user, you will get a message on top of the forum saying, 'You are currently logged in as another user. Click here to log back into your account.'

This hack is very easy to install. This hack has only the admin yes/no option. Just install and it's ready to be used!

Enjoy!

I am using a Sytyle (Simple Black as default, would that make a difference, or there are 3 Admins but I only tried to give my self Permission and in config PhP I am the Only #1 and no added admins to the config.php. any Ideas?

Well just tried this again reinstalling and the link to log in as user in the profile does nothing, but going through the admincp works. But once logged on as user the only way to log out is to use the forums log out and not by clicking on the text that says click to log out. Using 4.0 PL1

It's much better than the previous option which was to get your user to give you their password. I use it when a user wants help with something or is complaining about something that I just can't see. Guns don't kill people, people kill people.

I'm having the same problem.

I suspect I might be like other users who are experiencing this problem and use vBSEO. It turns out that the two Mods interfere with one another. In this case. vBSEO is re-writing the URL in the Member Profile and Header Template changes.

The workaround is as follows:

1. Make a copy of your member.php file and call is admember.php
2. Go in to your vBSEO control panel (General Settings -> vBSEO Options) and place admember.php in the Excluded Pages block.
3. Edit the templates added by this Mod to call admember.php instead of member.php. (The easiest way to find these templates is to install the Advanced Product Management (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=229418) product and this will allow you to modify the Master Templates).

Thank you!!!

It works fine now, never thought of a conflict between vbseo and this.

Followed your directions and all is fine and the log out links work like they should.

Thanks again!

Been using this successfully for a week or so. One problem: I logged in as someone who was sending some spam, and then in another browser tab deleted that user before I was able to log out of that account.

Successive attempts to view the forum at all resulted in errors. I was finally able to re-set things by copying a log out URL from another computer (I probably also could have deleted browser cookies), but it may be prudent to auto-log-out of a user if they're logged in as a user that doesn't exist.

thats really a problem with vbseo - when i disable vbseo the hack works fine .. with vbseo no change - but the fix of win7site was fine - because the link is really not there in vb 4.0.1.

i hope we get a early fix for this hack - because i think a lot of people use vbseo und must have the same problem that the hack is not working because of the url rewriting of vbseo .......

thats really a problem with vbseo - when i disable vbseo the hack works fine .. with vbseo no change - but the fix of win7site was fine - because the link is really not there in vb 4.0.1.

i hope we get a early fix for this hack - because i think a lot of people use vbseo und must have the same problem that the hack is not working because of the url rewriting of vbseo .......

You don't have to disable vBSEO entirely, just the URL rewrite for the member profiles.

Go into your vBSEO Control Panel
Click on URL Rewrite Settings
Click on the Advanced Settings tab
Scroll down to Rewrite Member Profile URLs? and set this to NO

Have you ever seen a thread here where somebody did NOT post something like that? The reality is that with the huge number of add-ons available for any version of vBulletin, there are bound to be some incompatibilities. That's why when you report a problem at vBulletin.com or via the tech support system there, the first thing they will tell you is to disable all plug-ins and add-ons and see if the the problem goes away.

This particular add-on is working as advertised on 4.01 for many people. If you have vBSEO installed, make sure it's the latest version and follow the instructions I gave above so that member profiles for not subjected to URL rewriting. If you use the URL rewriting option included with vBulletin 4.x, check that it's not rewriting links to member profiles.

If you have vBSEO installed and do no want to disable rewrite profile URL's in order login (and logout) as other users successfully, here's a method to bypass this limitation.

1) download member.php and upload it as member2.php
2) edit the templates navbar_admin_log_in_as_user_header & memberinfo_block_admin_log_in_as_user and replace the occurences of member.php with member2.php

You now have a fully functioning "Admin Log In As User" modification whilst running a fully functional vBSEO.

Thanks for a great hack that is really useful! I can test user account issues and functionalities without having to compromize their password.

Another post talked about not wanting the user to show up in WGO, I just pop into admincp and allow that user to set 'invisible' and then go invisible when I'm doing it. Later (if I remember), I reset their account so they can't go invisible. Works.

You're having the same issue as I am encountering by the sound of things. Let me guess, when you hover over the 'click here to log back into your account' hyperlink at the top, the link is only to the member profile to whom you are logged in as?

I'm wondering if perhaps there is a mild issue due to vbseo perhaps..?

They are not even close to the same thing. With the link you posted you need to know both users passwords to switch.

ArchAngelz
24 Jun 2010, 10:13
You may want to install it first to try.

You don't need the know the password if you do the linking via the Admin CP.

I see both as serving different purposes; this one is good if you want to switch as any user, but dont do this switching very often. The other is good if you regularly switch between a few users (as in my case when I stumbled on this mod).

ArchAngelz
24 Jun 2010, 12:05
Perhaps you should read the whole sentence rather than just part of it:

Accounts can be linked by administrators via admincp or by users via usercp as long as these users know the passwords for both accounts.

To help you, I've broken it down since apparently you have difficulties in understanding it:

Accounts can be linked

1. by administrators via admincp; or

2. by users via usercp as long as these users know the passwords for both accounts.

This mod doesn't even allow users to do linking, so why are you talking about the user bit?

Seriously, before you make a further fool of yourself, please install BOTH mods and try it out; especially if you are not able to read the explanatory text for the mods in FULL.

I was going by this: "as long as these users know the passwords for both accounts".

Besides, v4.04 is broken; I had all my image attachments deleted after upgrading.

It isn't just with 4.0.4 that this started. Like I said, there is a plugin change in the thread that WILL fix it so it will work for you. I had to read through all of the posts to find it myself.

Here's the post with the required fix.

It has stopped working for me now using 4.0.4 so I am thinking it is clashing with another mod...not sure which one though

It really is quite funny how someone who doesn't know how to read is trying to criticise/accuse others as not trying to read.

Best part is that the fix he thought was the fix, turned out that it may not be the fix he thought it was; as confirmed by the original fix author!

Shot himself in the foot once again.

As they say "Discussing Stratagems on Paper". Sometimes it takes a trying out rather than just reading and theorising.

It DOES WORK in v4.0.4 after doing the plugin change here:
http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showp...&postcount=202 (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showpost.php?p=2055316&postcount=202)

However I have found that it clashes with vbSEO - if you are using vbSEO then this mod MAY not work.

I will see if I can find out why but please don't hold your breath as I am hard pressed for time given the disaster that v4 is because it CONSUMES ALL MY BLOODY TIME

I have it installed with that fix and working with vBSEO and 4.04.

Now that is interesting...I disabled vbseo and it worked...re-enabled vbseo and it didn't

For other reasons, I have disabled the vBSEO "Rewrite Member Profile URLs?" - try that.

Also, I've disabled the vBSEO "remove blank space" option. It does nothing useful and it interferes with some other functions and add-ons (e.g., rotating banners). I don't think that one will affect this add-on, but give it a try too if the first doesn't work.

Works on V 4.0.5 Although I have to log off then log back in as myself. The link at the top to log back into your account does nothing, refreshes page but still logged as user.

Works fine for me on 4.0.5. The link at the top logs me back in just like it always has.

Odd... I did the change as posted a few pages back. Are you running vBSEO too? Perhaps it is fighting me.

Nope, not running vBSEO. Have no use for it.

Just installed it on 4.05 and it's working with this fix (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showpost.php?p=2055316&postcount=202).
It is strange that you have to give permission even to admin to use it.

That is the way it should work. Not all Admins need to be able to use this.

Can somebody confirm that it does NOT work in 4.0.6 ? The link 'log in as this user' does not appear anywhere.

Hi and thanks for the great work.

I can confirm that this is incompatible with VBSEO's' "Rewrite Member Profile URLs?" function. I'm using vb 4.0.6.

If you edit the mod and change the Hook Location of "member_complete" the links do appear by they do nothing other than refresh the page.

Personally I want to keep the URL rewrites so the generated links are no good to me.

However the mod is still usable by going to the user manager in admincp, finding the user and selecting "Log in as this user" from the dropdown list at the top.

You have to manually log back in again afterward as the top revert login link also fails but this is still a very useful mod.

Many thanks.
