Had to disable Quick Reply as because of the above it was giving double posts. Now it just goes to a error 500 instead (but successfully posts).

Same problem here. The mod does not seem to be compatible with version 4.0.4.

Edited: Actually, I take that back. I applied the fix mentioned here (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showpost.php?p=2019974&postcount=608) and it works perfectly now. :)

So i just wanted to make a quick note to clarify that I am no longer developing AME (or anything else for vB). I hope the community can (and will) make use of the various versions of AME to keep it alive. Please do me a favour and keep relevant credits where they are due - but otherwise run with it and keep the project alive.

I won't go into the reasons for my walk away from vB - it doesn't after all take a genius to put it all together.

No, vb405 definitely does not do automatic embedding.

no.. the link doesn't turn into a video, but if you click the video button and put the link in it does... essentially the same thing.. and it provides service to the same seven or so services too.

I think they both have their place, but if AME is going to wither up and die hopefully vBulletin can expand on their's to include everything AME does.

They are essentially the same thing because the only additional step you need to do to have them embed is click a video button. If you don't think that's why he gave up on the project I'd like to hear a better reason.

It's a lot easier to create definitions for AME than it is for the basic system available in the stock vB (because stock vB obviously has none.) The reason AME is no longer being developed is because it didn't focus enough on making that step easier for the masses. If it did, it would still have a strong place in the market.

ugh. The reason I stopped supporting AME is because I stopped supporting vB. I never even had a vb4x site (though like many I parted cash in an unnamed "pre sale" almost a year ago). I am currently in the process of converting to another forum package (that oddly has auto embedding an an extensible video system) in my busy schedule.

As to the points about what AME does versus what vB4x does - well, thats by design. AME2x was far more complex and feature rich than AME3, but that was because I built AME3 on top of vB's video code system for maximum compatibility.

AME sholdn't hae even been needed in vB4 as the additional functionality of AME SHOULD have been out of the box in vB4. The vB video code is limited (but well written) however for whatever reason, it was done without the average user in mind.

Users are bathed in rich and responsive UI's every day now. Gone are the days where users were woooed over your smilies appearing in your wysiwyg editor. Users DO NOT understand or care about popups or tags (we fix about 30 broken quote boxes a day to prove it).

When we click on a smilie, we expect one to appear in our editor. When we do a colon and paren, we expect a smilie to appear in our message. When we paste in a URL into our message, we expect the url to be a link when we read the page. Me (and my users) expect to be able to post a link to a youtube video and it appears in their post.

These are not crazy concepts, they are natural user expectations.

All of the code is there, almost all the functionality is there - but there is a disconnect. Smart linking (of videos) is an important user experience feature that could have been great but instead a non extensible video tag that users have to be instructed about before using.

In regards to definitions - Anyone with minimal regex knowledge could whip out a crap load of definitions simply and easily (heck, 15 minutes looking at the ones there would have gotten people started).

I had also hoped that people would have "got stuck in" and involved in sharing definitions with each other (thats why I spent so long creating import and export systems). But in the end there was DJ and a handful of others trying to help everyone else that wouldn't even try to help themselves. Which is fine and to be expected to a degree - but also sort of sad and deflating.

Anyhoo - those are some of my thoughts on the subject(s). I do hope that AME's functionality gets folded into the core system one day - but sadly I won't be here to see it.

You just articulated the words that have been in the back of my mind ever since 4.0 came out. I sure hope somebody in charge at VB ends up reading that post. VB is woefully behind the times in terms of providing a simple user-friendly experience. It's like they know how to code... But they have no idea how to code for people! If only they would take a damn lesson from Facebook.

I would be sucked in, but it really isn't as easy to work with the RegEx as you make it sound. I even picked up a copy of RegEx buddy, had it working in there, but can't get any of my attempts to work- even with assistance from Digital Jedi over PM.

You type a URL that you have set to display and it should appear embedded.

I suppose you could search and replace. But problems would occur with any videos that don't work in vb4. i.e., if you changed all your Youporn links from AME to VIDEO, they wouldn't work in vb4 because it doesn't come with a definition for Youporn. Better to change them to urls, then they would still work, though they wouldn't be embedded.

Can't use File Cache on a Windows Server because ame auto adds "/" to the location.

Videos not showing up in 64-bit IE8 is normal. There is no 64-bit version of Flash yet, so no way for IE8 to play those videos. Adobe may eventually get around to putting out a 64-bit version.

How far back did you go? You will need to set it back quite a while (or even all time) to get all your posts. Make sure to have a backup before you do so.

Also set Verbose mode to on, and see if your posts are being queried by the converter.

I doubt there will ever be definitions for this version as it never did anything but wrap [video] tags. What's needed is a different mod that would actually allow users to define new definitions and add them to vb4. That may not be possible because the necessary hooks are missing.

Yes by removing the product and overwriting the video.php file again with a fresh one from the members download section.

The Geek mentioned sometime back that he wasnt happy that vBulletin rewrote the video.php file, which stopped his mod working and wasnt going to chase them by changing it every time Vb decided to change it themselves.

This is why this thread is not supported by the designer anymore!

I removed this mod a while back, but all you need to do is the edit on the video.php file.

If after that it doesn't work then you need to re-write the same file from your members area.

I co-admin a video site so some people take advantage of this. Right now the vertical video is displayed in a 4:3 embedded video. They would prefer it to be in a vertical video. I wasn't sure if this was an AME thing, a vB thing, or some other thing.

Running into an issue, not sure what i am doing wrong...

When i use the video option on CMS:

The main CMS page shows a small video clip when part of the CMS post. Then when displaying full CMS article, it displays a 640x392 youtube video.

When I use the video option on BLOG:

The main Blog page shows a medium size video of 425x256. Then when displaying the full Blog, it also shows same size video.

Help and Questions:

1. I want to continue showing small video on main CMS and main Blog pages. But, I want to show a consistent medium size video on the full CMS and full Blog pages. How do i fix this to be consistent?

Running into an issue, not sure what i am doing wrongYou didn't even give links so we can only offer general help. To troubleshoot issues with video, first I would uninstall any mods that may affect the video. I'd also uninstall this one since you had to do file editing to enable it - undo all those file edits.

Then when you can verify embedding is working properly in a native vb4 system with no mods, add them back one at a time to see which one is messing things up. Alternatively, if it's just vb4 doing it, go to vb.com and search for the problem there.

Originally the intent was much more grandiose. It was supposed to be a template language where anyone could add/edit sites easily. That never really happened, though the vb3 version did have one person that figured it out and he released a lot of definitions. The original author moved on before doing anything with the vb4 version, but I believe he has said anyone is free to take it over.

I think there's a vote floating around Jira somewhere to get vb to add more definitions. I'm not sure they'll ever figure out how to make it automatic any longer. That was just much easier when internet video was young and relatively rare.

I'm not a coder like The Geek or some of the people here, but I know how to deliver a stable product. I'm confident I can continue to maintain that quality that started with AME. However, I'm not familiar with the most recent vB4 changes, so while even a new vB3 version is pretty far down the road, I really couldn't tell you how soon a vB4 update would happen. Unless someone donates full admin access to their demo vB4 board for testing for the indefinite future, I don't have that kind of option at present. I will work towards that end though. If you were patient with my AME 2.5 definitions, you're really going to have to be patient with my product development. I'm a perfectionist. :)

Actually, neither this, nor the early versions of AME were ever supported. I remember when the first one was posted and he would help out a little with new releases, making sure any initial bugs were worked out, but he had designed it then so that it didn't need to be. vB 4 kind of nerfed his ability to do it that way again. Problems just kept coming up. For a long time on vB3, it seemed supported, but that was just me answering newbie question and trying to pimp my definitions thread. (Did I just say that out loud?)

Actually, it was a very gradual process. Took several years before he ever fully dropped developing for vB. He turned over his paid hacks to Calorie several years ago, and did some free releases since then, like AME. AME was just the last one to go. The last straw in a lot of ways.

I'm not saying you can't voice your opinion. I'm just saying, given all the facts, it's not really a fair assessment. I actually defend his decision to leave, even though, it makes it harder for me to develop the massive definitions set I had been working on. But his decision to leave has forced me to try and take over development of AME if no one else beats me to the punch, forcing me to look into the beast of PHP that I'd been avoiding or putting off.

Not in my opinion. Though I'm admittedly biased, it's not that I don't think the other media embedders provide good service, it's that it doesn't have the "user end" support that AME does. Meaning, you only get the site the dev feels needed to be added to the modification, and if for some reason the dev has to take some time off, no one can offer ancillary additions.

For instance, someone over at the AME 2.5 section wanted me to add support for PlostoPleer. It was going to be a while before I got to it, so he figured it out and made one himself, then released it to the community.

The Geek was a god for VB. IB should do everything in their power to get him back and other coders like him back. This modification and even his PDF that he made was fantastic. VB can not be the same without him.

I am impressed with DJ wanting to take over this and try and get a VB4.1 working version with all the definitions the community wants, however that is going to be a mammoth task.

I was in the process of testing a 4.1 upgrade from 3.8.x and now I feel like a massive hole has appeared because this product was just legendary!

With my test install, I used the rebuild feature for my old 2.5 definitions. It converted them fine from ame to URLS but it could not convert them to the new format.

Also posting a youtube url only posted it as a url, it did not embed it.

Pretty sure that means some files are in the wrong location.

I did release one here in this thread a while back, but it wasn't tested, and only a few folks got back to me saying it didn't work right. I'm having to go back through each individually. Not all sites supported in the last will work with this newer version of AME because it only has one $param value for video IDs and some sites required two+ to make work.

Hi All,

I wondering if anyone else has had this issue. I upgraded one of my boards to vB 4 and AME 3 along with it. Pasting a YouTube link into a post isn't converting to video embed like it did with AME 2.5 on vB 3. Is there something I'm missing?

I've had some trouble getting this to work on some 4.1 installations who had made the edit. Specifically, we could not get new definitions to work, but default definitions seemed to work normally. I still don't know why.

It did actually work but every post you made you get a message, thanks for posting, if you posted a poll you will be automatically brought to it.

Its basically making a call every time and you dont need this especially for QR and slow server loads..

Thats a file edit, not a template edit. And I've had no such issues.

And DJ: I'm only using the default stuff, cause I'll never be able to wrap my head around regex. So out of the box, it works perfectly...

Perhaps the 4.1 re-write solved this mystery for me on my 4.0.6.

After spending whole day, i finally find solution.

Now this mod working for me on 4.1
For example, i'll talk about youtube.

If you want up&run this mode, try doing next:
1. Make sure, what your forum parsing youtube links. For this try make new post by extended editor, and insert link by standard "video link" dialog (pic 1.)
2. If link still not work check two settings. First - make sure, what allow remote retrieval count not equal zero. Go to Admin CP => Options => BB Code Settings (pic 2). Second - make sure, what forum where your try post link have enabled IMG tag. Go to Admin CP => Forum and moderators => Forum manager => Your forum, choose edit=> Enable\Disable Features, and check [IMG] settings (pic 3).
3. Then, if your link start working properly, you may install AME as described. After install, just edit this file - functions_video.php.

Hmm, I've got the same issue. I used the Admin control panel to perform the rebuild but all videos have remained URLs.

I'd have to double check, but if the old Blip definition required more than one parameter ($p1, $p2, etc) then it won't work with AME 3, as it only uses one.

On newer version of vB 4.x, there seemed to be problems getting new custom definitions to work. I worked with a couple of boards and even recreated YouTube definitions didn't function.

It sounds like you may have made an error in your file edit. Or you used an HTML editor that made unwanted changes when you opened the file.

I have it working on a fresh vb 4.1.1. everything going smooth so far. But that is very discouraging to say the least man :( It's great now don't get me wrong but with only a limited amount of resources this mod can not even start to get close to it's true potential.

I'm going to take over development of AME 2.5 for the time being. Once I wrap my head around the code, I'll try and tackle AME 3, too. That is, unless someone beats me to it.

Yes, in fact I upgraded to 4.1.1 last week I believe and didn't notice till today that AME3 stopped working.

I don't think it's a bugfix. We need a whole new interpreter that can be modified and updated easily. A user setting for "Disable automatic video parsing" would be nice.

It's unknown just yet. It works with vBa, but I don't know if vBd uses the same postbit hooks.

What I find a bit confusing is that some seem to have made it work using the fix on 4.1.1, whereas others cannot - Is it just the double posting issue?

I've been usiing this mod on my 3.7 forums for a long time, and I was hoping it would migrate to the 4.1.x frontier, but after reading all these pages I have hesitated.

It's not nearly as 'popular with the community' as you might think. Some people are just lazy and won't use bbcode no matter what you do. Saying that auto-parsing video tags is 'popular' with these people is disingenuous, since they were never really given a choice. Not like you can count the people that would go to the effort to "noparse" their video links.

As admin I kind of missed it at first. But I don't think it made a bit of difference to most users, who likely don't even think about it as they click on an unparsed video url to watch it.

Have you also imported the xml from the vb-4.0.4-ame3.zip file?
I forgot that in the first step and only uploaded the files :)
What i did is:
- Upload files from AME3.zip
- import xml from AME3.zip
- Upload files from vb-4.0.4-ame3.zip
- import xml from vb-4.0.4-ame3.zip (let overwrite)

When you create a posting, do you have the 'Automatically convert links into videos' button selected?
