I have upgraded to the latest and greatest VB, and I no longer see my submit to stopforum spam in the search for user section in Admin CP under the user's profile. What happened?

Were you having it screen for user name?
When I first installed this mod I have it check username, email and IP. I soon found out that even normal usernames were on the stopforumspam database so I disabled username checks. The username check is pointless anyway because with emails it is unique to someone and so can IP in a lot of cases. Whereas username is not unique to anyone.
However, having said that, I have not had a single spam bot join my site for a long long time since installing this mod. But.... and there's always a but.... I had a suspicious account register the other day and it had a .ru email. I later manually checked the stopforumspam site and the email and IP is on the database but it appeared on there AFTER it registered on my site. Then today I get another strange username register, but with a .com email. It's not currently on the stopforumspam database, but when I search the email on google I found it on another forum where it registered yesterday with a different but again odd username so I suspect it is also a spam bot.
So after all this time I now start getting spam bots register.
I like the sound of the "bad behaviour" and "VSA advanced permissions" mods. I might check those out.

This is the best fricken thing EVER to be offered for vbulletin. Absolutely amazing. In the last 16 hours (since I installed it) It has prevented 212 people from registering, allowed 47 people to register, and after hand checking all 47, only two were spam. Amazing. Sending donation now.
This mod, used in combination with the geographical ip prevention is wonderful. I can block all of asia. My life is back to normal again!!
To the people who say their worried about blocking legit people, I can only say that I don't care. Spending hours a day filtering through new registrations vs having a few legit people per day blocked is not even a question of being a problem for me.

I have two suggestions based on the SMF mod that uses StopForumSpam's database to filter spammers. The SMF version as I recall had another option besides just deny or allow registration on match.
I would suggest a third option...allow registration and put the regsitrant in the moderation queue. Also, if the database can't be reached for whatever reason a similar approach should be taken to ensure valid registrants aren't tagged as spammers just because they couldn't be checked.
As a note I am impressed with the fact that this mod still works on V4.1 considering no updates for quite some time. I would be willing to donate if the mod could be rounded out and provide more options on how to handle things.

There is already the option of allowing registrations if the database can't be accessed.

You can, but the facebook integration does not work.
Try Spam-O-Matic (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=248042) as an alternative which has a few more features and works in a similar fashion.

cheers for the info, as i had a bot sign up tonight that's listed about 10 times on the stopforumspam website, and everything had been running sweet till now, only by chance that i checked it out.
I can't seem to find where the logs are kept similar to the screen shot on the first page of this mod that shows the checks that were done etc..?
I installed on my forum (3.8.2), but I get a blank page when I click to check the logfile (all white next to the menu)...
I've seen where a couple of people got blank pages when they attempt to submit, but I don't even get that far...

We have used this for a year with no spam, now we are starting to get spammed.
please can anyone update or will it just die out?

Does anyone know how to erase the data?
I installed this mod last night, and allready there are 317 log entries!
Is there a simple way to delete this data from the database?
Go to admincp > Statistics and Logs > vbStopForumSpam Logs
You can prune the logs using the Remove Entries Older Than (Days) section.
I can confirm that this does work on 4.1.1
And on 4.1.2 too.

Sorry I just can't see where I can prune log entries (and do I ever have a lot of them!) and I am in the Admin account. I'm in the vbStopForumSpam Logs (vbStopForumSpam Log Viewer).
I can sort the entries by username, email addies. When I ask to sort them by IPs, I see a Invalid SQL error message but the server is kept under wraps by the owner and I don't want to go there.
Besides, there must be an easier way of pruning these entries? Maybe I missed some button in the interface, a link or something?

Sorry about the delays in responding. I spend most of my spare time on the stopforumspam.com site improvements. Glowhost is working on improvements to the source (and god knows it needed it!)
I hope to, one day, upgrade some of the code with requests but I just dont have much in the way of spare time given the ongoing requirements in just keeping stopforumspam.com running. I hope you all understand. Maybe once its all working just the way I want it, then Ill start coding mods for all the blogs and forums that I can (legally) for my hands on.

For improving the database, spammers have to me manually reported, one at a time. Sounds like a losing war. They automate, so should we. Any reason not to other than the 1% chance that someone is marked as a spammer when they weren't and that prevents them from easily going to other forums?
Hi Pedigree, I've installed this on three forums we have. No idea if it's working, but we'll see!
Getting a lot of ''thanks for post, great post'' or similar.
But, is there a way I can see logs of what has been rejected?
Edit: 24 hours later.. not one spam post has been made.. which is technically a record.
I've had about 3 in total for our three forums..
How can I mark some as Spammers, and mark others who aren't that have been mistook as spammers?

Normal registrations are still succeeding on that forum and as noted it is not a very active forum as yet. All of the errors are for usernames that look spammy but I have it set so that only email and IP are checked against the database, so it's not the username that's triggering this.
Also, despite the "MySQL server has gone away", there are no MySQL errors coming from several other sites on that server using MySQL incoluding at the same time that these errors are appearing, so the error seems to be misleading, i.e., it seems it's the invalid SQL statement that is throwing the error, not MySQL crashing.
Any idea what is causing this?

22 Mar 2012, 22:43
I know why you get database errors....
Lets say a new member (or hacker) tries to register...
The register vB PHP script opens the database (with a (say) a 30 second time out (wait_timeout=30) set in MySQL my.cnf)
The SFS plugin then goes off to check the credentials against the remote SFS service (3 times) using curl in my case
SFS is either very slow or offline
SFS plugin times out, then then retries using another method (silly really)
The retry also times out
The total SFS time out is > 30 seconds
The plugin tries to update the database, which has 'disappeared' due to its own 30 second time out, and vB traps it as a DB error
So I've fixed the problem by ...
a) when using cURL not failing back to file access
b) changed the cURL time out to 8 seconds
c) changed to cURL time out from string to integer (time outs were not working at all)
d) also... changed split to explode for PHP 5.3 compatibility
Replace the functions_vbsfs.php file with the one attached here.
Enjoy! (permission given for the code to be added to the main product)

Is it recommended to allow registration if it times out?Actually i am not sure with definition of "Query Connection Error". Does it mean if our forum failed to communicate with stopforumspam's server?
If so, i think if the communication is failed (whether because our forums are down / SFS's server is down), we shouldn't block registration.
What if a legit user registers on the wrong time? When the communication is failed.

I am still here but I really don't have the time to fully support the mod. Glowhost took the code and added to it for Spam-o-matic, which will provide protection for vb4+, and if there are any show stoppers, then I can provide some support for it on the stopforumspam.com website which I run.
Most of the issues are around no open_url and/or curl access, which I've really answered to death.
The good news is that I will be releasing this for vb5 when its released. I'm just waiting for some code to be made available.

@semprot thats up to you, you can let them register or you can block it. The stopforumspam servers are up and working and the error means that your server cannot contact the stopforumspam.com servers via file_get_contents and/or curl.

One suggestion to save answering your favorite question to death is in the settings in the admin panel, put a bold red warning when open_url and/or curl access is not available. That's what I do on my arcade script I am releasing. Of course cURL is hard to detect on some servers.

I've noticed that a lot of the users registering on our forums have banned IP addresses on stopforumspam. About 2/3rds of the signups are now successfully getting banned, but I would estimate that more like 4/5ths of the signups should be banned. The most recent IP address allowed to signup is 199.87.229.22. Its in the stopforumspam database several times, including 5 days ago.
Is there an adjustment I need to make to ensure that all IP addresses that appear in the stopforumspam database get banned from signing up on our forums?
Suggestions are welcome. We are running the latest 4.2 install of VB.
Thank you.

I'm on a iPad right now so can't say for sure what are the exact files or comfirm yours, just make sure to keep the directory structure intact, if you're using fille zilla you shouldn't have any issues uploading and maintaing structure.
After uploading the files just install the addon by importing the xml, like you do with any addon.
Only the install file needs to be imported, leave the other xmls in their proper folder as it is.

What's the situation on v0.7?
Both this mod and Spam-O-Matic lack a whitelist. The author of Spam-O-Matic has stated that they don't see a need for it (despite tonnes of requests for it to be developed).
Is there any chance that the 0.7 version of this mod (in which whitelist was indicated would be included) will ever make a public release, or has the development ground to a halt?
djbaxter
29 Oct 2012, 21:18
What would be the purpose of a whitelist?
Based on testing that I've done with this and other boards, the false-positive rate is a little too high (somewhere in the region of 20-25% of all flagged email/IPs). These figures were ascertained by conducting a cohort study where we tested people's IPs/emails and allowed them to register anyway, extracted the logfile, then followed them to see if they were ultimately banned for spamming. Obviously, your mileage may vary according to your users, but that is our experience.
If we implemented this mod on a reasonably busy board (100-150 registrations per day), we would expect to have a significant number of genuine people denied registration to our site. While the benefits may lead some to conclude that it's a sacrifice worth making, I'm a little less willing to break more eggs than necessary when making this omelette.
As a matter of good 'customer service', we would be prepared to whitelist IPs and emails from people who got in contact with us, then instruct them to try again.
I realise that others have suggested manually creating user accounts for people who fail the SFS check, but on a busy board that would eat up any labour-saving efficiencies that this mod brings. It's also impractical to be disabling and re-enabling the mod to permit people to get through.
I'm not the only one asking for this, which leads me to believe that either we're all misunderstanding the nature of the mod or that we're all seeing a fairly obvious gap - as did the original author when coding for v0.7.

the problem is if you think there are false positives, then report them to their DNSBL provider, the IP address can be removed but it takes 24hr to propagate for removal
this mod is not responsible for the false positives, its the users reporting them to SFS

Turned this on yesterday and it's blocked over 15,000 registrations in something less than 24 hours. (I assume many of these would have been blocked already with our human verification options, but many would have gotten through too, so this is a big plus.)
However, we've also had one real user (presumably) mail us saying he couldn't create an account. So what do you do to get a real user access?

Based on the logs, the emails and user names getting reported seem really flaky. Lots of repeats and those blank emails. This is how they're accessed in the code:

Have they changed by vb4.2?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but the code certainly seems to add the email address all on its own:
$spambot = getSFSXML($vbulletin->options['vbstopforumspam_url_check_' . $field] . urlencode($data));
In this example, $field would be email and $data would be $email.
The problem is that sfsProcess() seems to be getting really weird results from the two variables I noted:
$username = $vbulletin->userinfo['username'];
$email = $vbulletin->GPC['email'];
Including blanks for $email, or at least that's what it's logging.

It looks to me like all those variables are set right and being passed right, but the problem is that vbStopForumSpam sends out those requests even before the spammer has been let in to register. Thus, if they haven't set an email and would be rejected, it checks their email anyway. If they fail at the human question, it checks anyway, sometimes again and again ...

The old URLs work just fine for me. Additionally, the submission form at the SFS site is still located at http://www.stopforumspam.com/add
i have already linked it to another person in a few posts back, not sure which one it is but the link is there

I posted this at the SFS forum (http://www.stopforumspam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=33712#p33712) just now:
Can you clarify the status of the alternate URLs for checking and/or adding spammers to your database? I have seen posts at vBulletin.org in particular indicating that stopforumspam.com is obsolete and or that api.stopforumspam.org is more up to date.
What is the recommended URL to use
1. for checking a new registration against the database; and
2. for submitting a spammer to the database?
Here is pedigree's reply:
At the moment, they point to the same box but I hope to move the lot to api.stopforumspam.org in the near future. I have issues to iron out with DNS failover, balancing etc. You can use either but I cant 100% guarantee the road map going forward until i get these issues sorted out.

And I can verify that the same is true for the original link.
And pedigree's reply is quite clear: Both URLs point to exactly the same location. So telling people who are having problems that the fix is to change the URL is misleading at best - that won't change anything or fix any problems they may be experiencing.
In particular, your statement that the stopforumspam.org database is more up to date is clearly not true.

i have only had lets say 10 pass with that
but i can say that it has been more reliable for me
if people has been taking notice of posts here and on their forum then yes it would be more up to date

Sorry but that is simply not true and cannot be true. Please re-read pedigree's statement this morning:

the point i am making is that api.stopforumspam.org url has not been down for me
whilst many report stopforumspam.com being down, the other is still active
so its more reliable

*sigh* No it's not.how you timestamp
please read posts, many say that stopforumsspam.com api is down alot
when i check my logs i find that the api from, api. ******* . org
is still working and blocking spammers
i could show you timestamps / screenshots where people say its down and let people register, which the logs will report if it allows reg if down
as i said i havent had 1 issue with that url for the api

And I have no issues with the other URL. And, for at least the third time, pedigree has stated that BOTH URLs GO TO THE SAME PLACE... same server, same site, same database.
Just because a URL is inaccessible from one geographical location or IPS does not mean that others can't reach it. That's the nature of DNS.
Please add a function to recheck accounts later if the SFS is down.

That seems rather impractical to me. What do you do with new registrations in the meantime? Keep them on hold? I certainly would never enable a feature like that.

There was talk of this being updated to check the stopforumspam database again when they went to make their first post. It is often the case that spammers sign up to forums but wait a few days or weeks before starting the posting and by then they may be on the database if they were not before.
Sorry if this has been asked, but I can't find it. I'm on VB 4.2.x and when I go to upload this script I get this error:

Yep it has been asked before. A lot actually.
Try this:

There used to be something in my user manager to check users. Some sort of box to submit the name, ip, and email address to vbforumstopspam database.
I don't see it there anymore. Any ideas why?
thanks!!

I can no longer recall the source either but here's what I have, adapted for vBulletin 4.x (up to and including 4.2.0 PL3).
1. You'll need an SFS API key. Replace "1234567890abcd" in last line below with valid API.
2., AdminCP >> Plugins and Products >> Add New Plugin
3. Details for plugin
Product: vBulletin
Hook Location: useradmin_edit_column1 (or useradmin_edit_column2 if you prefer)
Title: Submit to StopForumSpam.com
Execution Order: 5
Plugin PHP Code:

We have a number of registrations blocked with the following reason being given:
"Result on field username - Unregistered - Spammer and rejected by policy"
The user name listed is being attempted to register is "Unregistered".
These people are not trying to register with a user name of "Unregistered". Does anyone know what is causing this? I saw that this question was asked previously, but no answer was ever given as to the cause. Thanks.

Does anyone know if this works on 4.1.1?
Also does it help with ddos attacks?
Any way we could get this mod to write the logs to a thread?
Perhaps daily or something??
Great mod.... I recently had to switch to Spam O Matic because that mod also moderates phrases. Is it possible this plugin could offer that capability as well?

I'm testing out Google PageSpeed service to see what affect it has on speed on my site. I've had it running for a few days now, and I just noticed from a new member that joined my forum that they are coming from a Google IP because of the PageSpeed service, and therefore this made me realise that all my members, including myself are coming from similar Google IPs.
This has concerned me now that if everyone is coming from a Google IP that the StopForumSpam won't see their true IP and therefore will let all registrations through?
Does anyone have experience of this using Google PageSpeed Service and Spam Protection?

Hey how is it that the IPs are coming from Google? Why isn't your local public IP showing? I don't understand that at all.

Yes but without and the bells and whistles that have created problems with Spam-o-Matic. I started with this mod, changed to Spam-o-Matic, and then switched back to this one.
