For vBulletin 4.1.0 Onwards

Versions Attached

4107: vBulletin 4.1.0 to 4.1.12
4200: vBulletin 4.2.0 (+)

This modification is not available for vBulletin 4.0.x

Please remember to click Mark as Installed if you use this modification.
Please fee free to nominate this modification for the MOTM, and/or use the donate link provided (Support Developer).

The reputation options [in this colour] are only in the 4.1 version as the functionality is included in the 4.2 core.

This displays the actual number of posts that are still considered unread by you (and will show up in a 'getnew' search).

It also displays the number of new reputation comments since you last checked your usercp.

There is also an option to put back the members last visit date, which was removed in vb4. There is the choice to count the unread posts since your last visit, or all posts considered unread. This setting reflects where the divider in the 'getnew' search display used to be (apparently its no longer displayed).

There is also the option to disable the unread posts display or the new reputation comments display. New Reputation Comments are shown in the Notifications section.

This modifications settings are located in vBulletin Options > Display Unread Posts and Reputation.

The unread posts functionality requires that database thread marking is active.
Please be aware that installing this will enable that system (with automatic forum marking).
Forum marking choices are located in vBulletin Options > General Settings > Thread/Forum Read Marking Type

To install this hack unzip the xml file and import it using the ACP Product Manager.

It would be nice if possible to hook the location and add the Unread Posts (xxx) like the template edited to the admin/mod on the header. Another words have it add Unread Post (xxx) next to the notifications instead of using it.

Actually, I played about with it on that line, and didnt like it.

It would require a (different) template edit, and changed code, so it isnt going to happen atm. I may provide it as an option in the future, but for the moment i have other mods to upgrade.

this only occurs when members click on the "unread posts", if they click the actual announcement in the forums, its ok.

Paul: Can you tell me whether it is possible to adjust where contents of this mod display? Ideally I would like to customise the location -- i.e. not have it as a second line of text beneath the header links. Can this be done? Is it simply a variable I can move about in the templates?

Sorry, I have no idea how you could possibly get an announcement error from clicking on Unread Posts.

You have reminded me however that the link does need updating for content type on vB 4, maybe its related to that.

There ya go! =) I only have the mod tagged currently as I haven't moved to VB4 yet, good to know.

So umm... do what this guy said. ;) Although if there's no cursor change for the link that could be a problem as most users wouldn't know it's clickable.

Naw, you see how the "Welcome,YOUR_Name, Notifications, No new messages" Show when you run your mouse over them. ( At the very top )( Above your code/hack )

I think it'd be cool to have your code do the same, if it's possible that is.

Thanks,

I managed to get the text bigger and looks nice Paul, but still not what I was aiming for.
Maybe Lynn will see this and give me/us a helping hand..:)

Here's the tags used to get different font sizes if anyones intrested.

Code:
---------------
Code is only visible to licensed users, and only when logged into the forums.
---------------

You can play with the size but I like that one.

Is there a way I can set this up to alert users when they get a comment in their blog posts?
No, this is designed purely for forum posts. ATM, I have no plans to extend that. TBH, I cant see how it would be displayed either, it would stat to get quite crowded and complicated (Blogs, Social Groups, Articles ......).

Also, is there a way to change the color of the font "You have 3 unread posts" when there are unread posts, but normal when there are no unread posts?
You could edit the phrases to include color html.

Most other mods seem to function.

Yes, of course people make changes, thats not what i said. I mean are you using a completely custom style.

The fact remains that if you edit the header template, as instructed, and install the product, it works, as demonstrated by the fact that hundreds of forums are using it. You appear to be the only one having an issue, which rather points to something on your set-up. Sorry, but I cannot remotely guess why as i have nothing to go on.

Well, I installed it correctly and made sure it was enabled. The template mod was done, but nothing in the source indicated it was doing anything. As I said, most of my changes consist of the following:

3. Width and depth of textareas, and space ahead of text blocks, such as post replies.

I welcome any insights.

I have installed it on the forum you gave me details for, and its working fine. :)

The only thing i can think of is that when installed, the unread posts part defaulted to off, so you would need to enable it in the options (not the best choice, so I have altered that in the install file). Even so, the last visit date should have displayed (and the new reputation comments if you had any).

Ive deleted that part of the template (comments tag ) and uploaded the .xml file what else is there to do ? , the mod is working but its providing more info than it should. Ive attached a screen shot so you can see

You have an old customised version of the phrase dup_posts on your forum - you need to delete it.

u mean this

Find ;

<vb:comment><p>{vb:rawphrase last_visited_x_at_y, {vb:raw pmbox.lastvisitdate}, {vb:raw pmbox.lastvisittime}}</p></vb:comment>

and remove the comment tags, i.e. as below ;

<p>{vb:rawphrase last_visited_x_at_y, {vb:raw pmbox.lastvisitdate}, {vb:raw pmbox.lastvisittime}}</p>

Yes, I mean that.

There is nothing I can discuss. Without admin access i cannot tell you anything more.

Just a thought/ideal.

Hi Paul, I'm having a bit of a problem.
Running vB4.0.1
After installing, setting options and making the header template change this is what I have (see attached image). As you can see my 'notifications' dropdown is now 'off', and also the 'last visit/unread posts #' is not showing.

this is the code from my template:

Code:

Code is only visible to licensed users, and only when logged into the forums.

Any help would be appreciated =S

I just looked in my phrases and I have:
dup_post & dup_posts
How do I delete the dup_posts one since that may be what is messing my installation up as well.

EDIT:
looking in the phrase table of my forum database I have the following:
38933 -1 dup_disabled global <strong>Error: Database Marking is Disabled</stron... paulm_dup_40 Paul M 1255000000 4.0.2 0

This uses both dup_post & dup_posts, you cannot delete either.

In your template you seem to have <li> tags around the phrase rather than <p> tags - not sure if that would mess it up.

The thing is there are TWO dup_posts phrases, note:
38929 -1 dup_posts global Posts paulm_dup_40 Paul M 1255000000 4.0.2 0
38950 1 dup_posts global Post paulm_dup_40 Lindsay 1264644061 4.0.3 0
which one do I get rid of? the 4.0.2 one or the 4.0.3 one?

One of the vB staff had previously advised me not to use <p > tags in vB4..=S.. either way I got the same result, believe me, I tried <p > first.

Paul M
28 Jan 2010, 11:20
This is an edited version you have added ;

38950 1 dup_posts global Post paulm_dup_40 Lindsay 1264644061 4.0.3 0

This is the default ;

38929 -1 dup_posts global Posts paulm_dup_40 Paul M 1255000000 4.0.2 0

---------------------------------------------------------

One of the vB staff had previously advised me not to use <p > tags in vB4
I have no idea why anyone would tell you that, they are perfectly acceptable in vb4.

----------------------------------------------------------

JFYI, this mod will almost certainly break when 4.0.2 is released as the defunct phrase code is being removed from the template, and a template hook put in its place.

Eq4bits
28 Jan 2010, 11:35

Once I removed the origianl 'remember me' stuff the Unread stuff shows up (part of the reason I didn't realize I had a redundant 'remember me' box was because I was logged in, so wasn't 'seeing' it *slaps forehead*... sometimes it's the simplest of things =S

OK, apparently it is telling me I have unread posts when there are none. Screenshot attached.

This is a vbulletin feature, not this mod - however, it should only list exclustions if you have permission to view them in the first place.

That's what I changed. I tried changing it back to the original but it does not work. I went ahead and PMed you with acp access so you can just go take a look when you have the time.

You problem was the combination of settings you had - you were set to display all unread posts, but you had editied the mods safety feature (Maximum Cutoff Limit) to a value lower than the forum thread marking limit - so the feature always kicked in - displaying the simple "Unread Posts" message rather than the normal message.

Ive changed it to 10 days, to match the TM limit, so you should be working normally now.

This no longer needs the previously required template edit - a template hook is now provided in the Header template. If you install this version on a previously modified forum you must revert that edit if you have applied it. You must also make sure the template hook (header_userinfo) is present.

Paul M
03 Mar 2010, 20:04
Really?
Yes, Really.

So how you can explain this:
I dont explain how other peoples servers are configured.

What I do know is how this works, specifically one, fully indexed select. The average vb4 page uses about 15 such queries per page. Your links show that you are already running high loads in the before screen - if adding one more indexed query to a page is having that sort of dramatic effect then your server is already on the edge of collapse.

I would suggest that you make sure that your server actually created the dateline index (which btw, is done on install, and would take a while on 2 million posts).

Of-course will work on baby boards with small numbers of members online but did you tried on board with 2000 users online ;)Dont patronise me just because you have a busy forum. Im well aware of whats involved in busy set-ups. I have had this working on high traffic forums, and indeed, added the cutoff feature at the request of one to help control high load queries that would have involved counting 1,000's of posts. You would also do well to remember that this only works on logged in members, not users, from observing your forum tonight, I would guess its more like 800 members online, not 2000 (and I cant tell what you cookie timeout is either).

Perhaps it was a problem with some other setting/variable/installation but on my site we were getting 5 days of posts coming up as What's New/New Posts even when members had already looked at them. The inactivity/cookie based system is easy as it shows only what has been posted since your last visit. Seems simple to me. I don't know, I think it's strange that people would want it the other way, hah.

No problem Paul. I thought this would be my replacement for the "Welcome box" module that we used to have on vB3 with vBadvanced. That's ok though.

Hey Paul,

Back in vb 3.8, this hack used to show

"Unread posts since your last visit" on a different background, with a text saying these are posts unread from your last visit. Beforre in vb 3.8, there was a division between posts unread in the last 24 hours and another division for all other random unread posts.

While now, there is no text showing on the top before each unread thread listings. All the unread posts just shows up. I have all the recommended options turned on.

My users have their reputation displayed in their profiles, is there a way that when the notifications show a rep received, when you click it can it redirect to show the rep in the profile instead of showing the thread in user settings? is this possible?

I have a reputation tab in profile.

Not really, no. Default vB does not have a reputation tab in the profile, you only have that because you have another mod (of mine ?) installed.

And make an option who have your good mod, can opt to redirect to profile tab?

I like your mods ;)

Sorry, thats unlikely to happen. I dont even know if you can re-direct to a specific tab on the profile page, but either way, its not something I plan to add.

Not sure whether you can or not, but the "Template Edits" should be removed from the area with the checkboxes (Supported, Uses Plugins, etc).

Just upgraded to 4.0.3 and was re-checking MODs to see which ones did require template edits and this one states it does when it doesn't - because you fixed it.

Yes.

Dont really understand what you mean - excluded forums will not show up in New Posts, thats the point of them being excluded ....

This is one of my *must have* mods, but having a bit of an issue...
running vBSuite 4.0.3
on Win7 Pro 64bit
happens in SeaMonkey 2.0.4, Firefox 3.6.2, IE 8.0.7600.16385
I have installed, uninstalled, re-installed, allowed overwrite, checked the header template and the {vb:raw template_hook.header_userinfo} is there yet the info does NOT show up below the Welcome X/Notifications/My Profile/Settings/Log Out links - above the 'search box area'
the hook shows in both default AND custom header template
here is that section of code from my header template:

Code:
---------------
Code is only visible to licensed users, and only when logged into the forums.
---------------

Is there a fix?

If the hook is there it should show. I cannot guess at why it doesnt.

Eq4bits
27 May 2010, 00:51
Weird. On my custom template, if I add the hook a SECOND time it displays... not exactly 'where' I wanted it too (below 'Welcome Xyz & above search box/tab area) but it does show, but there is also displayed an 'error message' (see pic)
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m182/Eq4bits/unread.png

I also moved the first hook to be after the 'welcome' section but before the < /li> that preceeds the facebook connect code.
Then the second placement is right after the second < /vb:if> code after the 2nd facebook connect code (near end of template)

Been working on the hook placement in my customized style
It's in the right location now at least... if I could just get that Error: Header Template is Customised to go away!
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m182/Eq4bits/unread3.png

I moved the hook to near the bottom of my header template like so:

Code:
---------------
Code is only visible to licensed users, and only when logged into the forums.

installed without a hitch. Good mod.

Been looking for a mod that can be added as a link to the top of every forum category, so users can choose on the forum index to show unread posts only for that category. Sure...it's possible to set up a search to do this every time, but that's not convenient.

such a feature makes it easier for mods and admins in a hurry to select the admin forum category unread posts, and sort through only those, rather than the entire forum index of unread posts.

if someone has one, or can make one, pm me.

texasteamplayer

yeah yeah....I actually brought up this mod along with vSA's. just installed this one first.

but what's the "# l #" for? I assume it means x posts in y categories...perhaps?

doesn't seem necessary, and would like to disable it, and just have the drop down.

really great function that was super needed on big boards with too many posts for mods to deal with globally.

this goes along nicely with it, since it provides a clean drop down, and customization for which categories go in the drop down.

see it on teamplayergaming.com

thanks

How can I change its colour and font properties?

Thats caused by having the last_visited_x_at_y phrase in your header - you dont need that, remove it.

yes, what i've done is this:

upgraded the board from 3.8.5 to 4.0.4 (disabled the plug-in by the config.php file), then upgraded your products and enabled the plug-in system ... and found the errors ... so i uninstalled all your products and reintalled them ...

Yes, but it doesn't show number of unread posts even though they are out there.
Anyway, did some random maintenance via ACP and problem is gone. No idea what I've done but who cares.....it works OK now.

Hi Paul,

Used the prior version of this, and loved them. Installed this version, and it installed without a hitch. I am getting some odd behavior in the link however, specifically when there are no new posts. It looks like:

.../search.php?do=getnew[ARG:2%20UNDEFINED]

Looked in the thread, with no joy. Any ideas?

You have an old copy of a phrase - most likely you copied it into your local language.

Please excuse me if this has been answered before, but I searched and couldn't find anything.

Here is the text of what I have at the top of my forum:

You last visited: Today at 04:39 PM : You Have 17 Unread Posts

I changed the font color of all the text on that line to BLACK, but the part that states "Unread Posts" remains in white. Even the "You have 17" is now black. The only thing I can think of is because the "Unread Posts" is a link, but I'm lost.

Any way to change the words "Unread Posts" to BLACK?

Thanks!

I done it by placing div's around the hook location which this mod attaches its self too and then just a CSS to colour the link. Also handy for moving the mod away from the normal location under the toplinks which is highly annoying

I'm a bit of a "newbie" when it comes to code and their locations. Would you mind giving me somewhat specific directions to do this? I would be very grateful if you could!

Love this mod and many others you have created Paul.

One quick question. I'm using a custom template that isn't too heavily modified from the stock template. So, the Unread post count is automatically inserted right under the top nav bar where it shows "Welcome, user"

The issue I have is that the Unread post text gets placed right on a line separating that nav bar from my header box. I found the code in the xml file that sets the phrase. I added in an extra <br /> it and re-imported the product. When I refreshed my page, the phrase did move down a line like I wanted, but the 1 Unread Post part was no longer clickable like it should be.

Viewing the source, I do see that the html tag is still there.
When I import the default xml file you provided, the link is back where it originally was and is clickable.

I'm stumped as to why moving it down one line stopped it from being clickable.

This is what I changed

Code:
---------------
Code is only visible to licensed users, and only when logged into the forums.
---------------

I cant see anything obviously wrong with what you have done.

That was why I was confused too. And I am even more stumped now.

I have 5 skins total. The default and 2 other skins that have 2 color choices each one.

With the link moved down using the edit I posted above, in the default and one of the skins in both colors works.

In the other skin, in both colors it does not.

here is the html generated in a skin that works.

Code:
---------------
Code is only visible to licensed users, and only when logged into the forums.
---------------

And here is the html code generated in the skin that does not work.

Code:
---------------
Code is only visible to licensed users, and only when logged into the forums.
---------------

They look exactly the same to me.

Both the two custom skins are from the same author and are pretty similar in structure/layout. So it is even more odd that one worked with my change above and the other didn't.

I might just have to leave it in the default location. It really isn't a major issue, just more of a nitpicky thing with some of my users.

Thanks though for the reply.

Paul, this works great!

One issue with another mod that I was wondering if you could help with.

The Selective Forum Filter mod, which is obviously shown as only a 3.8 version.
http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=215001

There is a xml file to get it to work w/4.1
http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showpost.php?p=2046926&postcount=88

One of the steps in that is to edit each search.php and add an exclude parm to the url. Works great for the base VB stuff but not with your mod.

Someone did post they got theirs working:
http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showpost.php?p=2064210&postcount=91

But, doesn't look like it is working, you use a phrase within the plug in and I'm not sure how to modify that to work correctly.

I know that isn't your mod and possibly not the solution you'd provide but can you shed light on how the phrase/plug in should be changed to get yours to work?

If you don't feel like spending time on this I understand.
Thanks

As the description says ;

This version does not currently support forums excluded if you have the "Get New/Get Daily Opt Out Modification" (by Andreas) or the "Selective Forum Filter Modification" (by Psionic Vision) - as no vb4 versions of these modifications currently exist.

Granted thats a year old now, and I havent checked if vb4 versions now exist. If they do, I'll look at adding the support back in (sometime in early 2011). Until then try what Trek posted, it looks reasonable, but i havenet actually checked it will work.

Thank you sir, Trek's mod looks good but doesn't address the phrases so that's the only part that doesn't work and the part that is displayed on the screen.

Thanks for the quick reply.
