This is a current version of the popular modification, originally developed for the early 3.x series by Xenon (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=96602).
Basically, if member posts in a thread where they were the previous last poster, then if the conditions are met, their new post will be auto-merged into the previous post instead of creating a new "double" post.
A number of options are provided ;
Time Limit - if more than xxx minutes have passed since the last post, no merge is done.
Timestamp Spacer - if enabled, a timestamped spacer is added between the old post text and the new post text.
Other spacer choices provided are no spacer, a default, or a custom spacer.
Spacer Colour - allows you to set the colour of the spacer between merged posts (if one is enabled).
Post Timestamp Update - if enabled the newly merged post will have its post time updated to the new time, otherwise it retains the time of the original post.
Usergroup exceptions - Allows you to exempt certain usergroups from the doublepost merges.
Forum exceptions - Allows you to exempt certain forums form the doublepost merges.
IP Address Check - Specifies if the poster IP should be checked, if enabled, the post will only be merged if the user and ip address are the same.
All settings are located in vBulletin Options > Doublepost Prevention.
To install just unzip the XML and import into vB using the ACP Product Manager.
Support
Limited support will be provided for vBulletin 4.1.8 - 4.1.12 (No bug fixes).
Support will not be provided for Alpha & Beta versions, or anything prior to vBulletin 4.1.8.
Low priority will be given to posters who do not have this marked as installed
In some cases, support can only be provided if I have an admin login and ftp access.

Paul, When a double post is made does it query up as a new post? There was something like this in 3.8 but I can't find it and wanted to know if yours did the same as I liked that feature.
Sorry, I dont understand what this means - "does it query up as a new post"

Wrong wording I am sure but what I mean is if someone posts then that same poster posts again before a reply and I have looked at it before the double post merge will it show as a new post again?
Does that make sense?
If I look at a post then they post again before someone else replies it will show up as a new post again due to the double post.

The 3.8 version does not work correctly on vb4 (see here (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showpost.php?p=1954949&postcount=298)).
If your happy with the faults then you can leave it as is. :)

Was waiting on this one.
If I look at a post then they post again before someone else replies it will show up as a new post again due to the double post.
If you have the bump option enabled, then yes, it will update the timestamp of the post and it will show up as unread again.

Thank you Paul,
A single question: I see the default time to consider 'double post' is 120 minutes. If we reduce this [to 10 minutes, for example] this will heave any impact in our server? Or my question is just silly? ;) [and we can reduce this time interval?]

Paul, I would like to use this mainly to prevent the double post bug, where you make a post in the quick reply and it hangs for a second and then posts that same post twice. It's so bad since the upgrade that I've had to disable quick reply. Can this be used that way or is it strictly based on merging?
Not sure what bug you are referring too, but this merges only, it will never stop a post being made.

I got a strange thing. If I write the new post in the quick reply box and hit the button to send it, I always get the message that the message is too short. My settings does not allow messages under 10 chars but the tries I'm doing are always more that that. If I don't use the quick reply box everything work fine.
I don't know if it's related but I've installed alto the MARCO1 advanced quick reply (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=232730).

ofcourse you can this is an option in ACP.
vbulletin setting > doublepost prevention > Forums to be Excluded > then put in the box the id of the forum you does NOT want this mod to work in.
- don't forget to separate the ids by a comma "ex: 43,25,24,... etc"

I doubt others care, but is there a way to make it so that the next post id for the auto increment doesn't increase when a double post is made? For example, if the post id is currently at 10, and I just made a double post, the next post id will be 13 whereas I would prefer the next post id to be 11. So would it be possible so the post id only increases when a "real" post is made instead of it increasing when the post is added onto a previous post?
I have no idea what you mean.
Hikikomori
07 Apr 2010, 18:26
I have no idea what you mean.
For example, in phpmyadmin you have a post table that contains all your posts that were made on your forum. If you have a total of 3 posts in your post table, your newest post would have a post id of 3, and the next post coming up would have a post id of 4 which is based on the auto increment value.
With this module, when you make a double post, it also increases your auto increment value. So if I make a double post, the post id will be 4, but the post after that would be 6 instead of 5.
The table might look like this:
postid | post
1 | first post
2 | second post
3 | third post
4 | fourth post + another post (double post)
6 | fifth post
7... and so on
Without increasing the auto increment value each time a post is added to a previous post:
1 | first post
2 | second post
3 | third post
4 | fourth post + another post (double post)
5 | fifth post
6... and so on
If you manage to do something like a triple, or quad post, it could look even worse:
1 | first post
2 | second post
3 | third post
4 | fourth post + another post + post + post
8 | fifth post
9... and so on
It's really something minor, and I doubt anyone else would care but I think it keeps the table looking more neat. I'm probably extra picky. :p
Those values are completely irrelevant, they are just internal to vb.
It will always jump one as thats inherrent in the way it works.
Hikikomori

Well, not completely irrelevant as it's the post id found for example here: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showpost.php?p=2017571
I'm a little obsessive about things such as that. :p
But no problem, thanks for the explanation.
It is irrelevant - vb does not care if they are consecutive or completely random (as long as they are not the same). My forum is running on ids in the 34 million range, due to a crash years ago causing them to jump.

Thanks, I just want to prevent a double post. On 3.8.x when someone made a double post IE 'the exact same text as the text before' a message would pop up saying this is a duplicate of something you've just posted, you would then get redirected to the original. On vb4 this doesn't seem to be the case, I've logged a ticket about it so I guess it's trouble shooting time.
Funnily enough though the response I got aside from the trouble shooting steps was that theyve noticed a number of people getting the same problem recently so I wonder if it's caused by the 4.0.3 update?
Double post is not the same as duplicate post, which is what you seem to be referring to.
Great mod.
Thanks alot :)

I have just recently noticed that when using this mod the joined post is posted twice. Please look at the screen below:
First post was: "Tessssst", and then I posted a second one: "testt77" but for some reason this mod is adding another "testt77" to the original post so I end up with double posting of the second post after merging and it happens every time and to everyone.
I tried reinstalling this mod but it doesn't help. I am running vB4.0.3

Yeah I am. I upgraded yesterday and it doesn't seem to work today :(
Im not sure what is happening. but after 4.0.5, i'm having some serious troubles at various places.
when i click reply with quote, it produces
the text inside is missing. moreover, something is hampering deletion of posts.
right now i got a post in a thread that i can not delete(!!!).
I'm not 100% sure yet if this mod caused this, but this is the only mod I have that directly manipulates posts.
I will investigate more and post again later.
It seems the bug is on this addon: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?p=2070964

Forgive me if this sounds stupid, but is there a way to remove duplicate posts? I tried this and the other double post mod, but all they do when a duplicate post is created is splice them together. If the second post has the same post time and content I would rather it didn't get merged.
If there isn't a way, can I request this as a feature?

Using this mod on 4.0.4 Interesting problem.
The people complaining of double posts before were typically users logging in and posting with their phones, or cell services.
We installed this mod and it stopped that problem, BUT people that typically have never double posted are now double posting all the time.
Any thoughts?
This is a great mod cheers.
One question:
One the merge is done, if this is uninstalled in then future, do the posts return to their original separate thread/ post? Or is it permanent?

Permanent.
Don't know if this has been mentioned before, if someone posts an article (vBCMS) and tries to post the first comment, the comment will be merged with the initial "forum post" and thus the comment will be "lost".
Therefore, it is a good idea to add the vB comment forum to exclusion list.

Why would you want to do that ?

Why would you want to do that ?
I'd like it so I could custom the text with a little message (example below)
"Double post & bump prevention" ---- Flowed by the time stamp
Would make it easier for my "older" or "less tech aware" community members to understand the point behind it (connect the dots sort of speak). ;)
You can simply edit the timestamp phrases to do that. :)
Thank you Paul. Its working great on 4.0.8 :)

It's not working when you quote (yourself) and for some reason it's not working in a forum that's not public like a private forum.
Wouldn't it also be nice to have an option to always prevent double post? I don't want to put a time in there and if I take a really large number sometimes it will make a double post anyhow.
Next to that I really love this mod and I think it has made my need as a Moderator a lot less it's the best extra feature I have on vB!
There are no built in restrictions on private forums or quoting yourself.

Then there must be another reason why it's not working for me..
Also when there is an attachment in the post it won't do the merging.. not for the previous post and not if I add another post after it..

Don't know if it's a bug or not but, i've got a problem when i use image.
Example :
post 1 (without image)
post 2 (with image) is not marged
post 3 (without image) is not marged to the post 1 and 2
post 4 (without image) is marged to the post 3
Tested with vB 4.0.1 PL2
[EDIT] see your post where you say it's for desing, is it possible to have an option to disable not merging with image ? (next version :))
Thank you !
I will consider it.
TBH, its like that because thats how the original worked, Im sure there must be a reason.
Even if it were allowed, then there would still be cases where it wouldnt happen - as I would not allow the max attachments per post to be overridden.

It adding the post to another post.. ok, that makes no sense. Instead of just adding to the original post, it's creating another post and adding it to that.

The ajax display when you use Quick Reply is broken, it displays the merged post as a new post underneath the existing post. Its because of some changes made in showthread.php as part of the CKE integration.

Awesome mod :)
Downloaded - and will install in a bit when vB comes up for me, so marking as installed! :D
I've noticed a bug on 4.1.3. If the message takes longer to post (for example if you have multiple URL's inside your post), it's auto creating a double post divided by the automerge line. Probably because the forum is trying to get all URL titles, it takes a while... and the Doublepost Prevention consider it as multiple post or something :)
I hope this can be fixed. Thanks!
P.S. In the attached screenshot you can see a sample. I only posted once but appearead as double post merged. Tested again and it happened the same.

Running vBulletin 4.1.3 …
I just noticed in the last few days that the "Quick Reply" button seemed to be not working any longer, or acting weird? If I enter any text in the quick reply box and hit the "Quick Reply" button, it just sits there with a spinning wheel saying "Posting Quick Reply .. Please Wait"
It appeared to be a problem in all forums ...
What's interesting is that if I simply scrolled up (even though "Posting Quick Reply .. Please Wait" message was still active), then selected the thread again, the post had been accepted and went through, so it was as if the quick reply routine had stopped returning to displaying the thread after it was done.
Anyway, I had a vBulletin programmer diagnose the problem. He found that Doublepost Prevention v4.1.2, which I had updated to a few days from v4.1.0, was preventing the Post Quick Reply function from working properly. He disabled it and the Post Quick Reply function started working again fine.
Since I knew that v4.1.0 of Doublepost had been working fine, I went back and re-installed that older version. I then re-enabled it and tested the Post Quick Reply function again…. it's working again !!!!
So, I think there's a problem with vb4.1.3 and Doublepost v4.1.2 (possibly 4.1.1), at least when it's running on my system. Perhaps these later versions weren't designed to run on the older 4.1.3, as the description says for 4.1.4?
I post this experience for anyone else who might be seeing a similar problem. :)
Regards,
Doug
