Perhaps you should edit that permission denied/log in page to show in big red text that you have to be a vB licensed user to access some forums, and where to enter your name to do this. It seems like tons of threads just have a boilerplate on what to do.

That text is already in the no permission page and also in the registration e-mail, underlined bolded and whatnot.
The problem is people are used to these messages, so they don't even bother reading them.
