I've completed the new style for vBulletin.org! This is actually not my style but Ed Sullivan's, who created it when vB.org first started its way (before Sinecure and I hijacked it ;)).
So kudos to Mike. :)

This style is much lighter when it comes to images, it's mostly text-based and most of the images are small.
Hope you like this, I'm using it myself and sure is fun. Green rulez. :D

To use the new style, go here:
http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/member.php?s=&styleid=5&action=editoptions
Choose Green from the style drop down and submit. :)

Loads much faster than the other. I like it and hope you keep it as an option to use.
<rant>
Flashy graphics are nice and make a site look pretty, but, they take away from the functionality and slow a site down. If a page takes longer than a second to popup on my screen it annoys me. I don't pay top dollar for a t1 to sit and wait for huge graphics to load.
With this theme the page loads instantly, with the old theme it would take 3 to 4 seconds. If it takes 3 to 4 seconds on my t1 how long does it take to load for a person with a modem@28.8. Site designers should take into account that most people will be using analog modem connections to visit a site, if a person has to wait for images to load chances are they will go elsewhere for the information. Did you ever notice that Google, Yahoo and all the popular information sites load very fast have little or no graphics? There is a reason for that. People want information and they want it fast.

Much better. Less cluttery to me. It is a pain to go from vB.org to the forums, however, and have such a drastically different layout. Bummer. :) Oh well.

Yes I will make the site completely template driven (well, only the main index is left now) when I get some time, I promise. I'm just flooded with work right now. :(

Sometimes with new style selections, you have to select it from your profile twice, even if after the first time it says you are on the green. I believe that will change it for you both. :)

Nuttin against Mike, I am sure he's a great guy, but the design is original to cal henderson ( http://www.iamcal.com ) - he designed it for several sites, including www.ubbdev.com (who has since changed it a bit) www.customtopic.com www.forumpeople.com (last 2 now defunct) and a few others.

I've never cared for the main index file/graphics either but put changing this LOW on your todo list. We'd all much rather have you invest your time in your hacks! (that you thankfully share with the rest of us)!

nuno
06 Apr 2002, 13:39
yeah this new style rocks, i love it :)
i meant last thread and next thread links text.
shouldn't it be http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/green/prev.gif (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=36975&goto=nextoldest) and http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/green/next.gif (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=36975&goto=nextnewest) ?

Chen

nuno
06 Apr 2002, 14:02
zilt :D
but i think it doens't make much sense to have a prev and right after last and next thread and also next on gif :paranoid:
can we have arrows only plus text just like default Chen? :)

Hey..uhm....no offense or anything... but this looks so... so... familiar... like something from before Ed Sullivan ran vB.org. Actually, he started it but something before vB.org existed as a seperate site....

Oh well, looks good.

Yes, you're right that this isn't actually *my* style. The layout was indeed done by Cal a long time ago, originally for the whole FP thing that DukeOfURL mentioned. But considering that I was part of that whole group, it's not like I ripped it from them -- it was actually made for this site as well. :p

MM -- I'm sure that's what you were thinking of because I think you saw what FP looked like (memory... fuzzy...).
