View Full Version : Would you like to know exactly who installed your hack?
Hi all,
I've been thinking of adding something to the Full Releases threads here, a small note in postbit that shows whether or not the user has installed the hack (according to the database of course).
Are you in favor of this idea? If so, should it be viewable by all users or only the hack author? Please reason your opinion.
Thanks,
Smoothie

This is sort of like knowing who voted on a poll. Most likely it will result in less people clicking on the install button. Therefore, I say no to all of the above.
My vote is an unconditional NO.
I think it should be removed from the Hacks-section too. It's basicly noones business which hacks I have installed, but I'd still like to show my appreciation (sp?) by clicking install.
I can't see the problem in letting everyone see who's installed what hack.....
So i voted for "Yes, and allow all users see it"
However - will this add a query to showthread.php in the full releases and beta hack forum?

I think it's not a crucial decision since everybody can already see who installed a hack by following the link in hack database. Eg.
http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/misc.php?s=&action=whoinstalled&threadid=46679
So it should not be important if this information is also published in postbit. (Unless you plan to remove the other link too). Thus my vote is: Yes, and allow all users see it.
BTW. I believe it's important that *at least* hack author can see who installed a hack. All hacks here are free and may be the only way of "thanking" the author is clicking the install button. Hack authors should not be deprived of knowing who installed their hacks..
My 2 cents..

I agree with Logician - It will also help with providing support to members that have actually bothered to click install:)
Satan
Same with me here :)
At least the Hack Author and Mods should see it :)
But there is no problem to show it to all, because the function is there as logician said, it's just faster :)
Also i think more people would click install then, because who wants to post a supportquestion in a hack-thread and don'T have has installed in postbit :)
because who wants to post a supportquestion in a hack-thread and don'T have has installed in postbit
Thats a good point Xenon

I say yes, offering support would be better as those guys above said :-|
Regards
Yes but ive thought of a downside of this...
I don't normally click install unless i am familiar and have used the hack before and received support..
One thing that is annoying is for the last 2 updates for vbhome lite TECK has sent update emails out 3 times per update... i don't know if he did this accidentally/deliberately or its a bug - but its very annoying... It would be nice if when we click install there is an option on whether to recieve email updates or PM updates...

Well the reason when you click install is well there are many reasons, and one of the main reasons, is to offer support via PM or Email, you might as well not click install, and not be updated, and run the old buggy hacks. Right?
No... i only receive updates by email ... ive never seen anywhere an option to receive updates by PM...
Its annoying receiving updates when hacks are updated by the day as bugs are found...

Well I am sure, you would rather have a nice secure, and bug free board. Correct?
Hackers, are going out of there way to keep the users who installed there hacks happy, and updated, I really do not see what is wrong in them helping you keep your board healthy and enjoyable.

I think is is due to the script which sends the emails out timing out, whenever I've tried to send an update it has taken 3 or 4 attepmts for it to execute compleatly.
On topic, I feel at least the hack author should be able to see whos installed there hack like Logican said.
ok, i've added this idea by Chen now, it's only viewable by the hack authors. :)

Seems like it's now viewable by everyone? Were you intending on doing that now?
erm it's just visible to the hack author as far as i can see...
at least it's not visible for the public/guests

Alright; it's because I can view who installed someone else's hack.
you mean it shows up on the normal forumdisplay page, but i'm sure you can't see it within a thread :)
You can view it in their profile, but it doesn't show up in the thread unless you are the author of the hack.
when we upgrade to vb3 we have to rewrite the whole system, then it won't show up anymore to others than the author (and of course the user who has installed it ;))
Chen, I think is a good idea for all of us to see who installed the hack, the same way it is now in forumdisplay listing.
My name is Stefan, not Chen as you know, and no we decided that not everyone cann see it.
I think that the creators of the hack should be able to see who has installed the hack. They've taken the time and effort to create it 'free of charge' and the least people could / should do is show their appreciation - by both clicking on the 'Install' button and also in a reply post.
I can't see why showing it on the postbit would be that advantageous as people can already see this information elsewhere. I've therefore voted for the second option.
Hehe, have you missed that feature?
it's back again now ^^
