View Full Version : vB Links Directory 3.0
DrkFusion
12 Mar 2003, 02:05
Hi My name is keptic, I would like to state at first that I am not DrkFusion, but will be continuing his projects. I believe before he left he promised 2 hacks. Those are done.
Now onto the vB Links Directory, Arunan had given me the script to modify and release, with a stupidity on my part, I have no clue what happend to it, he has since reformated his computer.
But...we still have base files. With one day of coding both Arunan and I have been able to code the hack to what it was before.
Some of the features he had before are gone, but the progress is great, and I expect to release this on his behalf within 2 days max.
In the meantime I will be posting some screenshots.
Thank you for your understanding, and I am sorry, but it will be in the public released here within 2 days max, or even tomorow afternoon.
All of the following posts will have screenshots.

The Admin Script is being redeveloped alot, to give the user the most control, I may try to get in a quick beta testing by tomorow afternoon.

There have been major backend changes. The Database scheme is completly different, there are new tables, new fields, and many more changes. Though we will still code a update script, it will take longer than the initital Install.

We tried to get out a early beta today, but due to some unseen problems, tomorow is set for beta-testing. We still have some key things to finish up, including the Advanced Search and Admin/Super/Mod Options, and we need to develop a new form of Adding and Validating Links.
Today, we got many stuff finished, and I assure you the final release is not far. We will also be coding one for vB3 when that comes out as well.
To users who are using previous versions
Due to major database layout changes, and coding changes, immediate update will not be available with the release, but we will be developing a script that will backup your information, and then reinsert the information.
Thanks, and til tomorow!

Ok, I will send out betas in few minutes, as Arunan finishes up the install file. Please note that there is no uninstall feature, but will be for final release, and there is no update feature.
Thanks
I know it's late in the game, but I was wondering if you may include an option to display links alphabetically? This is something that would be extremely useful for the types of links that are going in my links directory.
Also, I am running 2.0 with around a hundred links spread out over 5 categories. You mentioned an update script. What sort or time frame can we expect on this? I really don't want to have to hand-enter all of the links again. I will if I have to though. Especially if the alphabetical feature could be added.
Will you post a detailed upgrade instruction set for the slow ones like me? :D
It's great to see this hack getting the support it needs. Thanks for stepping up Keptic.

There is options to display the link in any order you wish in the admin panel.
The upgrade script will be made, though it will not be included with the release, due to the major changes in this script the upgrade script will have more than 5 steps, steps that will backup your information from the previous install, steps that will uninstall the previous version, and then, steps that you will run ONLY AFTER you have installed the new version. More info will be provided.

Well, late last week, I officially listed vB Links Directory in my profile as my favorite hack, and now I must say I'm really excited by the expanded feature-set. It sounds like you've got quite a team going here, and I can't wait to upgrade my 2.0 area. Once that's done, I'll finish updating my links and add a button in my header.
Regarding the late release date, it's better to get it right first! :)

My harddrive crashed this past week, loosing main project files, and to do lists, and change logs and what not. I have found a possible solution to this one final issue we are trying to figure out, as soon as I get all code files from the other beta testers, I will work with Arunan and DW to implement it. I really like the outcome of this, it has really evolved into a powerful system.
A notice, after it is fully complete, I will be enhancing the code, and optimizing it, because the code is majorly sloppy, and there are some extra lines of code which are not needed.
I would also like to thank Xenon on Arunan's behalf, and mine, for introducing and letting us use a great piece of code to manage sub categories, which do not add any extra queries. Thank You Xenon.
On another note, I am sure most of you will notice, this has turned into a team project, because now we are able to bring you an even more stronger script, for FREE to the vB community.
I can't stresss this enough but, you guys WILL enjoy this script!
Thanks again for all your interest!

I was thinking that it would be cool if it was integrated with vB's search...so it spiders the links as well as the threads and posts...is this something that could be done without headaches or is it a silly thought?
A suggestion was made by I believe Teck to one of us, to allow an option for Apache users where all pages of the Links Directory can be made spiderable. I will be looking into this after our first release.
Obviously, the amount of speculation and excitement about this hack as expressed on this thread is a testament to how satisfied people have been with the original links directory, and how excited we are about the upcoming enhancements. The fact that you've taken time to get the kinks out and identify bugs, and work through a team approach speaks volumes to the potential of this hack. I hope everyone remembers and appreciates the long hours and frustrations the developers faced (such as your hard drive crashing near the hack's completion, Keptic) and exercises patience with regard to any final improvements that might need to be made, even after release.
So, here's to the great team of Keptic, Arunan and Xenon and all of the beta testers that have brought us a tremendously valuable script! :)

Xenon has been a great help for the hack, he has been suggesting many things to Arunan. We have identified a solution for this last bug, and willbe implementing it very soon.
On another note, I will be going in a recoding some parts, because this script seems to work with php 4.3.0+ but not with previous versions. That will be looked into.
I myself want to make this a longterm project, and will be setting up documentations, and a site for code bugs to be reported to, so the thread can be kept clean.

Ok from my point of view, it is ready. Here are some insight on its current status (of query loads etc).
-> Main Page = 8 Queries (average)
-> Viewing of Category (with only sub categories) = 11 Queries Flat
-> Viewing of Category* (with up to 10 links per page only) = 24
These are the main focus.
* These queries are not final, they can may be reduced, and by default the system is setup for 10 links per page, but if you reduce it..it will also reduce the number of queries.
DrkFusion
11 May 2003, 21:37
Here is what would be included in the package if I were to release it now:
Unlimited Categories
Unlimited Sub-Categories
Display of how many links in all categories, including parent categories
Category Description
Link Commenting (by user)
Link Rating (by user)
Link Reporting (by user)
Link Editing (by user)
Link Deletion (by user)
Basic Link Search
Fully Functional Navbar
Full control in admin
Unlimited Links
Displays the user who submitted the link
**** There are much more...you will have to look at the screenshot for more info!
Many of these options can be turned on and off via the admin cp options.
I have put the "advanced search" feature on hold for now, it has been giving me total trouble, and will try to tackle it from another view later on.
Overall, I am satisfied with how it turned out, I have a bit of optimization to do here and there, and a bit recoding in the administration panel. I will post some screenshots of it in the next few posts.

Why should each link add a query though? I'm just curious as to why you did it that way when as many links as necessary could be pulled from the database with only one query...

For each query, there are few queries which pull iimportant info about the link, including its stats rating, and comments wise. Anyways, as I told you before, there is still the optimization step to go through, I must admit the code is sloppy, and I am working to optimize it FULLY*
I will update all on the progres, and updates.

Last I heard they had one more bug two work out, they might be taking a bit of a break, before finishing it. From the screenshots it looks like a lot work... which would be understandable.
I've put the linking sections of my own site on hold till they release this. So I'd love to be able to use it as much as everyone else. But I'd like to only have to install it once, if that means waiting a bit longer for a stable script it's all good ;)

Its on hold til June 20th, as many people still have school etc, and we would be able to focus more on the script, and devote much more time to it. It is pratically finished, and just a new admin panel script must be developed.
A request has also been sent to Nick Saundaurs, on a collaboration for a Links System for vB3. Which will be MUCH more powerful than this one.

Just a question... I am holding off on installing until 3.0 is ready.. can I start uploding links in the forum now already (the normal way) and it will show in the links dir. when that is installed? I have loads of links to include - so it will keep me busy until the 20th. Just need to structure the forums to have them show as sub categories etc ---- right?
Or is it best to wait all together.....

I thought I have seen something like this on another forum.... is it the same one / old one or is it a different hack?
Wishlist
1) Make an option to have subcategorys, or this hack does the same as the free vb hack
2) You should add more items in the options, for example turn on the rating or whatever
3) You've forgot the sponsor.gif, not very important, but still
4) It would be nice to figure out a way, to integrate the hack with vbHome - if you could do that, I would advertise this hack, so people really know about it and you get money.
I'll try to explain the last one. If we define category "4", than there is an option do display links on the frontpage to all the subcategorys inlcuded in the category and the subcategory name as the header. If you'll do it, I'll bet this will get on rolling.
5) A smart counter, just like a vB integration hack could be helpfull too.
That's all for now, Marco

1,2 Is already done for the vB Links Directory 3.0
4 was done for the current version, but will release an addon that will allow you to specify which links dir categories etc to show on the vbhome page.
3 These are stuff I do not want to waste the development time with, but instead add it later.
5 ???
1) And [edit] link in the links.php?s=&action=viewfolder&folderid=2 user section, so the author can change the data himself.
2) Editor rating, AND + the usual rating, which is not identical. For example I would want on my site
--2.1 When "Editor" mode, the "Contributor" does not shows up, as there is only one person, who creates the links.
--2.2 "Public mode" with less possibilites
3) Guests can visit only limited amount of links
4) A box (vbHome integration) of the last 5 added with bookmarked id's
5) Id shown before the "Link" row
6) An option to open the link in a "_blank" window in a new page
1) In add new link section dropdown box with redirection possibilitys
2) Date Posted - only the Date, without the time
3) Unique views (don't con't more than one view per user) as an option
4) An option to add usual forum threads to a certain category
5) It would be fine seeing it on vB2 as well.

Total links in subcategories all totaled is already included, total all over links can easily be totalled, will add it ASAP.
I have decided to add a new feature called statistics, for each link which will show Hits for the link from your directory, the number of visits it gets every week, every month etc. Unique hits will only be calculated.
I am also thinking of adding a topsite addon, allowing users to link to you, and ranks them through that. I will need to think all this out this saturday. This powerful system can easily become a paid hack, as I can tell you right now, if I do release this, I will not have the effort to provide support, update etc. It has been a long development, it is pratically a seperate system, all it uses is vB's database, and coding structure. I will update you guys on my final decision, but right now its 99% that it will be released for FREE, but I would really like to reward all the coders, and beta testers who have been great through out this, and who are going to be put through lots of testing next week.
Ok, just a suggestion.
Links can be open in two modes:
1) A "_blank" window
2) In the same window (or a very nice looking, ascetic popup window) with a top frame, where are links to:
-Back to "category"
-Viewing a "forum" Link
-Rate This Link
-Add one more to the same "category"
Keptic, actually, I've got some of the code you need (the smart in / out system). I could send you the code over, you can contact me PM, if you're thinkg I could be of some help to you in this case.
What I would really appreciate is stats on how many (+2 or +14 or 0 etc., etc.) links have been added in certain subcategorys. If you could figure, how to connect it even with PhotoPost, I'm ready to send you even more good code, that could be of some use to you.

I was invited into the beta test but haven't gotten a download link yet *cough*
I didn't send out the hack as DrkFusion is taking over again. He has the newest files with my fixes. Sorry!

Please expand. Thanks!

Dark wizard had invited me to the beta test, but I never saw a download link. I'd still like to help beta test this project :) I currently don't have it installed as I haven't been given a link to test it but the above info is my site info as per request ;)

I'm guessing this hack isn't going to be released any time soon.

I was wondering how development was coming for this project :) I've been invited a few times to beta via private message, then the project either changes hands, or no word for weeks at a time.. its almost a tease, I'd love to help test if it will help get this out faster, or some word as to how the project is doing... :)

It's getting close to a year, I'm also starting to doubt the release of this hack. I think it should just be beta tested in the beta release forum since most of it works already.

This looks fantastic, can't wait for the new release.
I've been away from the forum for months due to other commitments, and I was really hoping to see that this hack had been fixed. I tried to just add a link through Admin and I can't even do that now.
I get errors for everything and I have people paying me for these links and I can't even get them on the web page. Help please?
nothing ever happens - and it's the only hack (+journal from KuraFire) which I am waiting for...
Well. I found a work around to getting the links added and deleted but it is dealing directly in the database....I don't like messing around in there.
Well now I'm at 2.3.4 the links display but dont forward correctly and the admin side of things is dead.
Does anyone know what is happening please???

This would be a useful hack! But why is this not in the beta forum? How did the project evolve?

Without wanting to steal these guys thunder, with VB3 now out, I decided to write the functionality that we needed for VB3. You can find it in the VB 3 beta forums at this address:

If everyone can be a little more patient...I am writing one to work with my vbWar and I will make a standalone for those that want it....
This will be a Yahoo Style Links System....with unlimited categories and sub-categories...

your work is worth waiting for please, also let me know if you need betatesters for vbWar 3.0 for vb3.0
I'm gonna see what the differences are between 2.3.0 and 2.3.4 and try to track down the bug for you... will let you know later what's changed to see if you can include it in the next revision.

Is there a process yet for 2.3.2 forums running this to upgrade when the board is upgraded to vB3 GOLD? I would really hate to reenter all my links.
:)
I've been hobbling along with version 2.0 on my 2.3 board, I can't add or delete anything with this version and any changes must be made directly in the database.
Will this 3.0 version ever come out?

I'm gonna say NO there isn't ever going to be another version of this program. It has been a year since the original talk of version 3 came out and there is nothing on that. I would be very surprised to ever see a version of this great program for VB Gold.

You have little faith then, there are a few versions of vb links directory in beta testing now.
vbadvanced is working on one, and I'm sure dark wizard when he gets time.
I'm one of the honored few to beta test the vba links directory.
Demo: http://www.orbsydia.com/links/index.php (http://www.orbsydia.com/links/index.php)?
Please remember that just cause you don't hear about a script being worked on doesn't mean that someone isn't working on it, we just all are very busy.
Well there is still a problem with it for me, same with vb Articles, I get
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: maketableheaderview() in /home/www/zclubnieW/forum/admin/weblinksadmin.php on line 12
maketableheaderview() doesn't appear to exist for either mods.
Any ideas please chaps??

I realize that there is little hope of v3 ever being released now that everyone's on vb3, but I would love to get my hands on the beta version of v3 for vb2. The main thing I am looking for is subcategories. If someone could email me the file, I would be forever grateful. Don't worry about it only being beta, I can try to reverse engineer the logic so I can add the sub categories to my running version of 2.0
