View Full Version : Login as User

what it does:
this hack allows you to login as any user from the admincp.

files to edit:
1 (admincp/user.php)

installation time:
< 5 minutes

Edit: added an option to restrict this hack to certain userids

this hack requires cookies.
do you have cookies enabled?

Xenon
03 Jan 2004, 17:26
for a quick test of permissions and other things, you can just change the bbuserinfo array from the phpinclude template :)

but this way looks better, at least if you have cookies :)

03 Jan 2004, 18:36
Hmm, it'd be even better if you could specify which userids could use this (ie, only head admin). The vB2 version has that feature.

Doesn´t make much sense, since all admins can edit the phpinclude-template (as stated by xenon).
but if you want something like that simply do the following modification to the hack (not tested):

After this:

Code:
---------------
Code is only visible to licensed users, and only when logged into the forums.

add this:

I found the problem.

You left your own license number in the code and didn't take it out and replace with with something like [licensenumber] and didn't say in the instructions to change it to the license number of the board that is using it.

Ah, I hadn't thought of that. The thing is on vB2 the userid permissions were all hardcoded and I don't think the concept of using phpinclude was thought of.

What about the issue of an administrator being able to login as a super administrator?

If you need to access this page, ask your lead administrator to enable your permissions for this page using the Administrator Permissions section of the control panel.

Were you trying to log into another admin's account?

I have a quick question, if I wanted Login As User as a phrase, how would I add that?

I added login_as_user as a phrase in group 28 which is the cpuser group but it's not loading? The phrase thing still confuses me a bit

Add a phrase in the group of "Control Panel User Management Phrases" and call it login_as_user. Then add the phrase you want it to have.

In the hack where you see:

Code:
---------------
Code is only visible to licensed users, and only when logged into the forums.

Replace with this:

Maybe in future versions add it to the ACP > Users menu directly? Then when that option is clicked it displays a list of users (X# per page, perhaps sortable by usergroup) then allows you to select one?

let me say a few things, if ur going to use this for "testing" purposes tis is a waste, u want to test something open a new window and have a test account made and login as that

if ur trying to use this to spy on ur members which is wrong anyway this is not the hack for u, as any PMs u read show up as a already read PM and if u do this u show up as being logged in on the forums

so i just dont understand how this hack has any use (other than to spy on members)

gopherhockey
23 May 2004, 15:37
... and if you are going to spy on members, it would make sense not to have the system update items you read or update the time you were on. Users will know as their New Posts (since last online) will be all messed up, and if you read things they will be marked.

I don't know why, but if someone does need this capability it should have some type of invisible mode for things like this.

I was interested in this only because some of my members are lazy and don't check the forums often - and they send me emails asking me to post for them... I have done this in the past as myself but want to "post as" - I'll look to see if there is a specific hack that can handle that...

it should be

then you click to a user to "edit" this user, then you click on the quick link on top, there's something called "login as user"

It doesnt matter if you are superadmin or not, as long as you can access to the member list in ACP

$_hack_canlogin = ""; // comma separated list of allowed userids. leave blank for all admins

If you have this field filled, you have to be "that person" indicated here, in order to use the function.

If you leave blank, all admins (usergroup=6) can use the function, and he can login as anyone else, except other admin.

If you want to login to other admins, you have to change this lines:

if($user['usergroupid']==6)
{
print_cp_no_permission();
}

maybe just remove it.

Once it is uploaded, you NEED TO CLEAR your cookies and temp files. This is done differently on each OS, so I can't leave instructions on how to do this.

Once you have cleared your cookies and temp files, re-login to your site. The function will now work.

If the function still does not work, you have either entered an incorrect license number or you did not enter the coding correctly.

This is a very easy install, and I too was having problems with it not functioning. Once I cleared my cookies and temp files, all systems were a go and it has worked ever since.

Well mystery solved. It seems the problem was our host. For some reason, whatever the configuration, this particular thing did not work. I'll never know what it was, as he would always tell me it was my problem. Now on a new host and it's back working like a charm.

I just tried this hack, in an effort to solve a problem I have, when testing something. I am sure all the admins here have faced that. Unfortunatelly, it doesn't, that's why I haven't click "Install" yet.

Say you have a browser window open with AdminCP and you are doing some changes, which affect only registered users. So, you either use this hack to Login as User, or open another browser window, to login with a test user name and password.

You try the new feature, and when you logout (as a user), you go back to the AdminCP, to do some further changes. In that particular moment, you have to re-login as the admin. Why is the normal forum and the Admin CP using the same cookie? Is there a way to change that, so the Admin CP and the normal forum use different cookies? This hack would be very useful, if it would allow you to do this.

Thanks and regards

Try this hack (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=70351) by nexialys. It creates a seperate cookie for Admins so you should not have this problem.

CLICKS INSTALL! After searching a bit, I found the option. Thanks!

what it does:
this hack allows you to login as any user from the admincp.

files to edit:
1 (admincp/user.php)

installation time:
< 5 minutes

Edit: added an option to restrict this hack to certain userids

Nexialys hack is a dream which came true for me. This is what I was hoping the "Login as User" hack to be. I wouldn't uninstall Login as User, but its usefulness, at least for me, is limited.

Thanks Nexialys (again).

But...you still need to log in as a registered user.

What's the difference between installing your hack and using a different browser to do it?

Your hack doesn't allow an admin to log in as a non-admin, so you can't really say "you don't need this "Login as User" hack anymore".

This was great in vb 2 and am finally installing in vb3. Nice work. Is it possible in a new version to add the feature to not update last posts read and not log IP Addresses?

For the hack author and whomever needs this, I have ported it to work with 3.5.

I didn't want to lift his work and release it under my name; so, here's the port.

The hack author may release it in the 3.5 forums as he sees fit.

Does anyone know of a way to password protect a specific file on a server? Kind of like a .htaccess alternative, but protects files instead of/and dirs.

I installed for 3.5 but for some reason when I try to login as a user it tells me I don't have the appropriate administrator privileges. I went into config.php and made sure my userid is listed as a superadministrator. I also click the link for administrator settings and made sure everything was set to yes. Is there another setting somewhere that I've forgotten?

Sorry, you don't have permission to access the administrative controls on this page.

If you need to access this page, ask your lead administrator to enable your permissions for this page using the Administrator Permissions (http://www.snobbymoms.com/emeril/admincp/adminpermissions.php?do=edit&u=1) section of the control panel.

That's what I'm getting when I try to login. I looked at the code to insert and noticed this line:

Code:
---------------
Code is only visible to licensed users, and only when logged into the forums.
---------------

I'm guessing that's causing the problem.

ETA: Yes, that was the problem. It's working for me now that I've removed it.

Amy, for the 3.5 version, you can use COOKIE_SALT for the vbulletin license number, so that people installing it won't have to hardcode their own license number.

Amy,

Is there anyway to code this feature to allow me to login as a specific user where it will NOT show the user logged in?

Id like to be able to login as a user without it effecting their cookies, last visit, read messages, and etc.

I dont want it to leave any evidence that I was ever in their account if this is possible to do.

Thanks

Doug

Id like to make a suggestion for this feature.

How about instead of this feature restricting access by user id, how about have this feature HIDDEN from certain user id's or by user groups? Either or both?

I think that that would be better. Out of sight out of mind if you know what I mean?

Anyone who doesnt have the privelage of using this feature shouldnt even be able to see it or know about it in the first place.

Having this problem after install, everything seemed ok until I went to log in as a user and get this error :

Fatal error: Call to a member function on a non-object in /home/xxxxxx/public_html/forum/admincp/user.php on line 56

which appears to be this line (but maybe it isn't this line) :
$user = $DB_site->query_first("SELECT userid,password,usergroupid FROM " . TABLE_PREFIX . "user WHERE userid='".$_REQUEST['userid']."'");

Logged in as admin when running and the lic# is correct.
