PLEASE READ
This thread is only here for users who have already installed this hack, there is no longer a public version of vBXirc for vBulletin 3.0.x

There will be a 3.5.x version in the near future.

Sorry for any problems this may have caused.

thx for this great integration :D

but i have a small question

is it possible to use custom header and footer templates for the chat window?
i tried to replace the $header variable to $custom_header but without success
does anybody know, what i can do now?

Does this hack restrict chat to registered members only? My concern is: I don't want people to be able to choose nicknames... steal other peoples identities in the chat room. Looks pretty cool otherwise. :)

I am new to vB and curious what needs to be done to install this. There is no install information in the zip. Evidently there is a lot more to do than edit index(vb3) and rename it to index.php.

Zachery
05 Jan 2004, 18:03
Diver it will be in my next version by default however if you wish ill give you the code to do it.

Nighteyes, ATM no it doesnt however when 2.5 is finished there will be a unregistered switch in the ACP to allow/disallow registered members.

Xenos all that needs to be done, if you read the install.html, is copy the template into your chat template that you will make and your done, besides fpting your files in place :)

As I told you before Faranth this will make a more than fitting replacement for my vB2 chat hack, I'll definitely install this.

05 Jan 2004, 22:07
Installed with no problems. To avoid having to change the header template, just put the files and directories in the root folder, delete all the php files, and use a separate style and add the applet to the forumdisplay template, then make that style permanent for a particular forum, and link to that forum. :)

Zachery
05 Jan 2004, 22:10
for my next version there will be an installer, it will install the templates to the global style

plus there is 6-7 templates for the next version for the options that im including :)
also alot of the options will be setable via the ACP :)

Are you planning (or could you consider) adding the feature of showing who is currently or recently in the chat room on another page? I think this has been done recently in the VB3 jIRC hack.

look forward to the new version!

Zachery
06 Jan 2004, 20:00
i MIGHT be able to, but dont count on it, im not sure how jIRC does it. anyone who is doing it is probally doing it via an eggdrop, or a server service, however i might be able to define the chat location and do somthing with that, howeveer if they continue to browse the forums then that location would drop

MikeJeffs
07 Jan 2004, 00:15
Ok, I think I'm gonna be installing anyway :)

You could always have a "Users who have recently entered the chat room list..." log the time each person goes in and give them say a 60min expiration time. This might not be good for sites where people sit there all night, however for sites with short span chat sessions it would be handy.

If you used my method of putting the chat applet in a forum, you can then have the number of users show up at the top of the page, as well as on the homepage, for users in that forum. :)

Do I just reupload or do I need to run the install script again?

I was also wondering if there is a way to remove the "change nick" box. Part of the advantage of only allowing access to members is that they use their own names (they could of course type /nick, but most don't know about that.)

Allow Guests is set to "no"

I dont want guests to be able to use the chat room. But if a registered member is not logged in, it would be good to allow them to login and be forwarded to the chat. As it stands the login screen is presented to them, but after entering a user:pass they get the 404 page.

the only thing i can think of is that your storing CSS as files, otherwise it should work perfectly. howerver i did check out that link and the only thing broken were an iamge or two which is just a path issue

Is there any way to have it join more than one room at a time when you log in to the server? We have two rooms, one for silly chat and one for serious discussion (usually moderated with a set topic for a few hours a night).

Also, how about being able to resize the java window from the Admin CP? That'd be useful - some people have complained it's a bit too small.

With this chat applet, is it possible to change the display font size and colour? Again, some people have said the default is hard to read on their monitor, and it'd be great if either it could use one set by Admin, or if the users could change it themselves :)

The only thing I really think this addon needs is the ability to use the standard header and footer templates...

Great work! :D

you can use the standard header and footer tempaltes, it used to, but ppl complained about having to modify them to work correctly :)

just copy your header and footer templates into them and they should work fine

Header > vbxirc_header
footer > vbixrc_footer

if the java window is too small you can change it in the templates, altho i will look into adding it into the ACP for the next release as it is a good idea :)

yes see in the template where it says command1 copy that put2 and change /join $vboptions[ircroom] to /join #roomname :)

That should cause the forum to add an underscore to the front of the nickname if it begins with a digit, and leave it unmolested if it does not.

1. When i try to connect, I get connection error: null or whatever, I think it's because I'm already connected to IRC as my nickname..

I was just testing it out, seeing how it turned out and all, didn't really want my rc board hacked up just yet, seems the only things that are diffiuclt to remove are the templates and the admincp options. I think I have to go database hunting don't I? like actually do a manual remove from the tables?

One big bug I've just found and reproduced on the sample sites. When a user is not logged in, and attempts to use chat, they get the standard error login box. Unfortunately the form is looking for /chat/login.php which doesn't exist.... it needs to point to /login.php. Obviously an easy fix edit the error message template and force form to go to /login.php.... but should this really require another template hack? :)

it either requres a template mod or a file edit to redirect properly

Faranth - I've got the chat room working seamlessly it would seem and have a registered channel now.. but I do have some users that can't get it because it just immediately disconnects. One I know is an AOL user, not sure about the others... any suggestions on that?

I did search this thread but didn't see anyone else reporting the same issue.

Ah, one of my users said the error they are getting is:
JAVAUSER DTHN Trojan --not real user

Then it has their IP address, name and location.

Should I take that as an invitation to find another server?

One problem could be a firewall, or the server in question has banned AOL from connecting.

Its on the users end and i really cant do much, besides recomend mIRC as another solution

Anyone know how to prevent users from changing thier nick's? This is a feature of the jIRC hack and was wondering if it's possible with this one? I've removed the "change nick" text box, but obviously, a user can still change it using the /nick command. I'm using the applet on a password protected channel, with the password configured in the templates. The idea is you only get access to the chan via the applet, then only if you're a forum member and with no way to impersonate other members.

There is a setting in most IRC servers that will prevent any users from changing their nicks, to remove this from pJIRC you would need to recompile the core, as it stands i dont belive with out direct modifcation to the source of pJIRC can it be done.

I'm impressed about how simply this installed ...

A couple of suggestions tho - you should probably use the local style's built in header, navbar, and footer templates - on both the index and the Help pages - the popup page could do with just the footer, without the breadcrumbs and gfx etc., but still using the local site templates ...

Zachery
18 Feb 2004, 04:18
Trying to have people use the "local" templates was more trouble than it was worth (instructions on how to edit the templates to make them work) the navbar must have its own template because the java menus popup BEHIND the applet, making them useless.

The footer needs to have its own template to make sure cron gets run and the links are 100% correct.

perhaps the irc server you use doesn't allow connections from certain IPs. Would be nice to include the option for a LIST of servers, as a fallback feature.

I'm having a problem with this hack also.
I installed it exactly as the instructions said, but when I go to click on the chat link...all I get is a blank page. Any ideas?

edit: nm I'm an idiot, was using the symlink path to the forum directory. Went with the "real" path and works fine.

Certain servers ban Java clients all together :L)

Zachery,

Great stuff, installed like a breeze, only hiccup was my own idiocy, accidentally had set securefx to transfer .jar's and .cav's in ascii instead of binary, but fixed that, cleared my cache, and all is well.

Clicking install now.

Did anyone put something to change the colors together?

I run a site related to Ohio State (noticed where you're from Z, lol), and that blue just rubs me the wrong way. I'm looking forward to something along the lines of scarlet and gray. ;)

pjdaley -- I'm no expert, but I suspect if you revert your navbar template to the way it was before, and then reapply the modification (to the navbar template) exactly as shown in the instructions, your problem will go away. Looks like you might be pasting in stuff you shouldn't.

Think I'll stick with my locally hosted java chat. This looks like it could be very useful to everyone without local servers and t-3 line.

Since 2.5.2 is not out yet, and we are all anxiously hoping it will be soon :o , could you also add an option in the ACP to remove the "Channels" button?

It would also be very nice to have direct control over several other params, like:

"UserCmdColor"
"BackgroundColor"
"TextColor"
"TextScreenColor"
"ListTextColor"
"ListScreenColor"
"LogoBorderColor"
"ConfigBorderColor"
"LogoBgColor"
"TitleForegroundColor"
"TitleBackgroundColor"
"TextFontSize"
"TextFontName"
"FGColor"
"InputTextColor"
"InputScreenwhiteColor"
"AllowJoinSound"
"AllowLeaveSound"
"LogoGifName"
"RefreshColorCode"
"SoundMsg"
"NickNameColor"
"NickMaskStart"
"NickMaskEnd"
"IgnoreMOTD"
"IgnoreModeMsg"
"IgnoreServerMsg"
"IgnoreCode"
"AllowShowURL"
"AllowIdentd"
"AllowURL"

lol - ok yes, I am basically asking for direct ACP control of all aspects of the look, feel and operations of the applet. (Along with removing change nick, nick prefix and secure channel password previously disscussed.)

Thanks for all you do.

Great hack, I'm still using it :) I was wondering it it's possible to release two versions? Personally I'm a fan of having the options in the php file with comments for what the variables are used. I believe your older version was like this? I like this especially because after a vb upgrade you won't have to redo the changes every time.

Is there an error occuring that I'm not realizing? It appears to be functioning properly on my v3 GOLD board? I had to edit all php files from scratch, seems fine unless I'm missing something (which is always possible).
