AJAX Script

I've got some questions about AJAX:

Can it be applied to standard HTML/XHTML pages?
Where can I find a similiar code (Similiar to the stuff we've seen with Vb 3.5) that, if it works with html, would allow a user to double click a chunk of content and edit it?


If someone could tell me a code that would allow me to do this or just ponit me in the right direction I'd be very grateful.
