View Full Version : [Release] Add A New Column To Your Forum Home Page
Author: mashby
Description: This mod will teach you how to add a new column to your forum home page. This mod places a new column to the left or right of your main forum index. You can choose what content you'd like in the new column by cutting and pasting various sections of the Forum Home. This allows you to have the PM information, statistics, or various hacks to the left or right of the forum home page instead of the top or bottom.
Screenshot See second and third posts.
This screenshot shows the new column on the left of the forums.
This screenshot shows the new column on the right of the forums.
Edit: updated image by uploading the correct image. :)

OMG this is what i've been working for but couldn't get it to work.
Thanx:)
Just remember, you may still have a good bit of tweaking left to do. The sample code is fairly basic. :)
Great hack yet again mashby!

if you looked carefully you can only (i think) add things from the same template like $pmmessages and $birthday things.
On yah if you also look carefully it says "

Well, there's actually 4 templates mod. Any of them should work with this template mod well. Just follow the instructions carefully and they should work. If you have trouble with a particular section, post it here. :)

Well, it depends what you have on your forum home page. If you have no hacks, then you could include what's in the instructions as well as the following:
Code:
---------------
Code is only visible to licensed users, and only when logged into the forums.
---------------
Anything else would probably depend on a hack, which of course is not supported here. Check vBulletin.org (http://www.vbulletin.org) for hacks.

thats a cool MOD :) nice 1 mashby
As to what you can put in your side bar, what ever you want. I put in a menu system from my website, and some forum code, but limited myself due to the width of the column to match the site.
All it is is code... a example is here:
http://www.shivasite.com/forums/
Did it last week, I also used a different setup, as I also have a header and footer setup in the table to give it a more polished look, but as it's a pretty new setup, still some work to do on the actual board. No hacks, just mods from this site, plus some extra code
looks great, i luv the idea!
however, i dont like the normal vbulletin look with it, looks a little un-organized.
but im sure if you incorperated some graphics into the left column, it would look much better! ill give it a try!!!

Mashby, the text attachment seems to have been corrupted somewhere along the line. Part way through step three the text is lost and a lot of binary gibberish appears.
Thanks

I'm trying to install this but I can't because I have the categories spaced, do you think you can make it work with that because it just makes a thing to the right on the last category instead of all of them.
On adding news to the side, I can do that with mine, due to a system that I have as part of my CMS. I believe you can find something similar on free sites, look for syndication programs. Mine is Javascript, so it will work on just about everything, it's just a javascript call actually.
Not sure on other formats, a lot of news programs use SSI, which may not work at all, even though it is a html call. Depends on your server really, most require a shtml extension for that to work.
As far as I know, a PHP insert may not work either.
Fixed the .txt attachement file. Sorry about that. :(

Sound like you just need to modify where you put your column. Having spaces in your categories shouldn't matter. For example, you may just have to go up one table and instert the mod there.
cool.. now can place sb in there

thanks -> tried -> installed :)
Sorry for my absense. My work has just been crazy and I haven't been around like I have been in the past.
If you're having problems with this template edit, it is more than likely due to a table problem. You'd have to post a copy of your template in .txt format in order for someone (don't know if I have the time) to see what went wrong.
Thanks for this hack. What do I have to tweak on it to get things to look like
http://www.cyberschmooz.com/gen.php
The left bar, right skyscraper & bottom links & disclaimers are php includes.
This may sound stupid, but is it possible to put it on both sides, and shorten the width of the forums in the middle?
Okay, so you want one before the post indicators column?
I have seen it done, but how it looks at www.vbulletin.org on the homepage except instead of news in the middle it has the forums.
News? Not sure about what your talking about. Sorry.
He wants a bar on each side, yes its possible hold on ill post the code.

Hi guys, I was directed to this from another site. I am confused on step 2A adding a column on the left. It says to "search for the following code:" but it doesn't say what code. Same with the "replace with the following code."
Can someone help me out here? TIA.
Sounds like you're not seeing the full .txt document. I'd suggest that you save the file to your desktop and then open it with Notepad, or some other text editor.
I just looked at the instructions and it's all there.

yes, I have done this using Vb home lite. You can just do the edit for your home (or forumhome template) for the left column first, then the center, then the right. Adjust the column spaceing to taste.

used to like sidebars ... but now dislike them a lot. a pain ... especially if some of your members have 800 x 600. Squashes up the forums a lot as well.

This works great!
....now how can I get it to work on every post and every forum, not just the home? Is there a HOW-TO somewhere?
Seems something has changed, cause it sure doesnt look like its working in vB 2.3.0

hmnmn I have a leftside that works but can't seem to get the rightside too...
Anyone else?
I have had the leftside for over 2 years now on both my forums
http://www.sportsnimports.com/
http://www.louisianaclubscene.com/
I attempted to make a right side table which worked fine on every single area except for the areas using the showthread templates. The reason being is that the right side table had to be added into the footer rather than the header, and the way showthread called up the footer, I never found a way to make it show up in line. I must have spent 3 solid hours trying to tweak it out. I finally gave up and left it on the left side. If you want a right hand column, you'll have to do it in forumhome instead of the header, and just settle for it being there on the main page, unless someone else has figured a way around this :)
