What are you talking about. What is clicking last page?

When you have a thread more then 100 pages this hack causes a lot of troubles. This is why i am trying to uninstall this. If the last page is 220 and you click from thread name it will not take you to page 220 instead it takes you to page 2.

I am running this plugin on my vb3.5.1 and users are driving me crazy with complaints that when they click last page it doesn't take them to the last page.

example:
http://www.theforumlounge.com/f14-shootin-the-breeze.html

DAK's Daily WTF pics
Trolling Pbase

Both of those do it. Any suggestions of what is wrong?

Oh yes, i recognized the same (respetive my Users recognize it and it drives em crazy.

This is with your last beta you send me per mail.

It's been mentioned/discussed earlier also - I disabled this system until that little bug is squashed as it did indeed drive people crazy. Still, I have to commend Dean C for all the (constant!) support he continues to give, it's nice to see it take place. :)

Awesome script ;)

Used this on a clients site and it when i compared his keywords stats to previous months they have doubled. Takes about 1-2 weeks before u start seeings results but its well worth it.

I am so happy with this script i installed it on Bluepearl Design last night, and today i plan on installing it on USFTECH Gaming.

and the forum url

/f64-gun-forum.html

/f2/
etc..

i think it will be nice if there is options :)

COsborne
09 Dec 2005, 21:16
if you add the thread id to the end of the url it is easily noticed by users and requires a much more complicated rule to accomplish. Changing to the forum name is doable but like I said it requires a rule for each forum which takes a while and doesnt allow for easily changing names. I wrote a mod for my old version of vbulletin (preplugin) so I've messed around with a lot of the options. I even went so far as to rewrite attachments so that they 1) were watermarked and 2) were affixed with .jpg so they could be included in posts safely.

If you would let me help you with the testing, I would really appreciate it. I have only www.DNLodge.com to put it on.

Here are some suggestions..

I've looked at the last 20 pages of posts in this thread. I saw you said that the rewriting of the last post is un-nessasary. But I think it is, mainly because of the SEO reasons.

The main problem i have using your mod right now is that google is indexing 2 pages for every one page i have in the forum. It is indexing the rewritten thread and the unrewritten thread. This is mainly because your mod isnt rewriting my similar threads and the last post column.

And BTW, I modified your code to make the forums view as dnlodge.com/forum-12.html . So I didnt lose the PR from my old rewrite script on phpbb after I upgraded. But is this making me not be able to rewrite the simialar threads?

-Brandon @ www.DNLodge.com

ps. If you need anything, like help, just give me a PM. I'm a master php and mysql coder, and could help in the thread since its become so popular. Let me know.. aim: daredevilbp or msn: neomania60@hotmail.com or PM or email: yourhostnow@gmail.com

11 Dec 2005, 00:29
Oh that was for your site, not the mod, but its working now.

And it would be really cool if we could choose out own rewrites. Because I would prefer forum-xx.html instead PR was on that. I managed to convert it to that in the old mod, but this one is alot more complex, and I will probably mess something up. So I guess i'll have to let myself get reindexed by google. But thanks

Just a question for the new version... If you have the showthread?=x versio indexed in google, will redirect get rid of the showthread indexing?? Because i dont like when i have the rewritten one and the showthread one both indexed. It drains the PR. This is the reason alot of people want you to rewrite the simialar and last post rewriten.

Wouldn't it behoove one to just use robots.txt to bar them from member.php (which is what the search string is to display last post on a thread, right?) and whatever it is that brings up similar threads (I don't use them, prefer to keep server load to a minimum and queries as low as possible, even though it's not necessary for me.) I block search.php, memberlist.php, member.php, profile.php, and nearly everything else that I could come up with that didn't directly involve either a thread or the forum listing itself... Why dilute at all?

That's only referencing the similar and last post comments - the redirect comment is a very valid point though.

Don't worry about that. Like I have said on several occasions, this modification is not aimed at your users, but at the search engines :) Hence, a search engine never posts, so they won't have that URL.

COsborne

Yes but the old URLs are redirected to the new ones. It'd add a very large overhead to rewrite random thread URLs within threads as a) we don't have access to the thread titles, and b) we'd have to access the thread cache or run a query to get the thread titles for every thread URL in the thread.

This is an un-necessary overhead in my opinion.

Would another query really be that bad? I'm not sure what sort of query caching vbulletin has integrated but it wouldn't be hard at all to cache thread titles.

It'd add a big overhead on large sites, and at the moment this modification is extremely scalable and inefficient. I don't want to sacrifice that.
Again, I'm not sure offhand if vB has a threadcache, but even building one would be a very large task and inefficient on large boards

Hi dean, I'm having issues with the install. After the install on 3.5.2, when clicking on any forum, any post, any member, etc it is displaying a page cannot be displayed message.
I also know that our host has mod rewright on because we used to run OScommerce as our shopping car system. They released a hack on their site to re wright URLS and this is what we had to put in our .htaccess file (This is no longer their since we moved to a better software):

Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /

RewriteRule ^(.*)-p-(.*).html$ product_info.php?products_id=$2&%{QUERY_STRING}
RewriteRule ^(.*)-c-(.*).html$ index.php?cPath=$2&%{QUERY_STRING}
RewriteRule ^(.*)-m-(.*).html$ index.php?manufacturers_id=$2&%{QUERY_STRING}
RewriteRule ^(.*)-pi-(.*).html$ popup_image.php?pID=$2&%{QUERY_STRING}
RewriteRule ^(.*)-t-(.*).html$ articles.php?tPath=$2&%{QUERY_STRING}
RewriteRule ^(.*)-a-(.*).html$ article_info.php?articles_id=$2&%{QUERY_STRING}
RewriteRule ^(.*)-pr-(.*).html$ product_reviews.php?products_id=$2&%{QUERY_STRING}
RewriteRule ^(.*)-pri-(.*).html$ product_reviews_info.php?products_id=$2&%{QUERY_STRING}
RewriteRule ^(.*)-i-(.*).html$ information.php?info_id=$2&%{QUERY_STRING}

This worked with OScommerce, so I would imagine if our host didn't have mod rewright installed, OScommerce wouldn't have worked. Do you have any solutions?

THanks!

RewriteRule ^deantest\.html$ showthread.php?t=6191 [L]

Also when viewing whos online, it's showing the guest as "viewing forum" or "viewing thread" it doesn't give the exact thread or location with link. Is their an easy fix to this?

Hi, found my way to this hack because I bought vbseo and they told me I couldn't download it because my site is inappropriate. :( Someone in the thread I created mentioned this hack. :) What's worse is today (xmas) I just got an email saying how I can save $20 when buying vbseo just for today. Grrrrrrr.

Anyway, after installing this particular hack here, I feel like it works on half of
my page content or something.
If I hover over the nav bar links they're the same as before.
If I move down and hover over 'Main Category' it links to http://www.420boards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1
If I hover for instance the first forum in the main category I get this:
http://www.420boards.com/f103-private-staff-room.html (looks accurate right?)
But if I move to the right and click on 'Last Post' for instance, the first one goes to:
http://www.420boards.com/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=205

Also would it be advisable or not to change the F and T prefix to keywords on the site like Marijuana for T
and Cannabis for F for my particular site? Would it allow me to have more keywords in the search engines or whatever?

Woud someone please check out my site www.420boards.com and hover to let me know if everything seems to be working correctly or incorrectly?

Thanks for the help guys this looks like a great hack!!

Dean C: I would be posting this as a new thread in the beta forum of the new version.. But it said I dint have permissions to post a new thread after logging in... so I'm posting it here..

Some things to sday about your seo methods...

You are using a bad way to redirect to new URLs. I suggest using a 301 redirect, which helps google realize that its an old url going to a new one. If you dont know how to do that, the syntax is here: http://forum.time2dine.co.nz/google/301-redirects-5223.html

Also, I'm begging you, you NEED to rewrite the simialar threads. It helps google get around the site much better.

Also, something else that is improtant... You might want to consider adding a redirect in .htaccess to send anyone who types site.com to www.site.com so google dosnt index......

http://www.dnlodge.com/t428-how-many-movies-do-you-go-to-a-month.html
..and..
http://dnlodge.com/t428-how-many-movies-do-you-go-to-a-month.html

here is the .htaccess code you can use... if you dont kn ow how to do it, although you probably do, lol...

###### Redirect to www.######
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^dnlodge.com
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.dnlodge.com/$1 [R=301,L]
RewriteRule ^$ index.php

since google sees the non-www and www versions of the page as different domains, for some reason.

Just some suggestions... hope you will put them into play. Those were the biggest things that I noticed.

*****EDIT*****
I was just browsing my forum, and I saw the "next thread" and "previous thread" links at the bottom of the thread, and noticed they wernt rewritten. So I clicked it, and the link pointed to the page from where I clicked.

To see what I mean, go to http://www.dnlodge.com/t868-reserving-names.html and at the bottom of the thread, click the "next thread" link, and it basicly links to itself.

Just a minor bug.. If I see more, I'll report them, and sorry I wasnt able to post this in the forum dedicated to this version.

The old threads are redirected to the new ones using a 301 redirect. It seems I've overlooked sending a 301 redirect in my gateway script though :)! Good looking out. Also I didn't think about the previous / next links. Noted and shall be fixed.

I would like to say Dean, I dont like how you have a link to a random site in my footer. I wouldent care if it was all in text, or there was just a copyright from you (which dosnt need to be, only in the code) but a sitewide link on my pages.... I dont like that. How can I turn it into text and not a link??

I have barely any outgoing links on my site, testing some seo stuff, and this is ruining it. How can I remove your link to whatever site that is?

If it was like a link to this thread, or something HAVING to do with the subject, fine, but I dont like linking to that site, because its not relevant and isnt helping me with seo.............

For instance if there is 26 pages and you want to jump to nr. 20 the link is incorrect and it will direct you to nr. 2 instead of nr.20

There are several differences - I'd stick with the current released beta available in the above link if you're going to use the hack at all - you'll be better off in the long run.

Thanks.. Installed the beta version.. No bugs.. :)

One more aspect i am keen to know more about is the Meta Description.. Specially since i have installed the "Welcome headers - Improve community registration rates (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=99579)" hack

Here is an example.. Of hows my pages are displayed in google and msn..

8 killed, 45 injured in Indonesia bombing - AshokForums

8 killed, 45 injured in Indonesia bombing Breaking News Home Forums Gallery Games Contact Us About Us ... You are currently viewing our boards as a guest which gives you limited access to view most ...

I want the Meta Description to be based on the Thread contents say contents from the first post and not on the Title and header.. can something be done about it?

I think vbSEO does that.. I do not have a paypal account nor do i have a international Credit card nor do i have that much money to buy vbSEO :(
meta descriptions?

I have the welcome headers installed on my site, but I am not experiencing your problems - I don't have them installed on the thread display primarily because I find them annoying to be globalized like that - but even so - I don't see any of the navbar contents present in your meta description - per that thread page:

"meta name="description" content="8 killed, 45 injured in Indonesia bombing Top Stories"

So I guess I either don't quite fully understand what you're attempting to impart or can't see the same problem you happen to be having.

Ok, so I downloaded and installed this latest beta from Dean's site.
Seems that beside the two thread and forum options in vB options panel, I can't do anything else.
Due to the way its done (between htaccess, seourls.php and product) I'm afraid I might break something trying to tweak it to my needs.
Will future versions include more options? Can you share a bit of your plans Dean?

There's an update over at my forums which is Beta 3, and it fixes a lot of bugs including the previous/next thread links.

And yes, I will probably be making a sitemap generator for my modification. Whether or not I release it in the final version or not, I have yet to decide, as it still needs a lot of work to get it working efficiently on very large boards.

Change the format of the filename to other than (f1-forumname.html, forum1-forumname.html, and like threads) as also the URL "structure" like /forumname/threadname.html

This would damage who uses already the actual version of DC SEO since after the updating this modification change all the url inside the users posts making them void.

You could include a rewrite to allow for those changes, but I agree, the constant changing around would get messy.

Indeed, whilst I can see some justification in building an engine to manage the rewriting of URLs, and it wouldn't actually be that hard, the actual ability to give the users the ability to change their URL structure is risky. Changing URLs all the time will have severe negative effects on ranking. Also the only way to really handle the rewrite engine is to pass all HTTP_REQUEST's to a gateway script. That is not very efficient internally, and this is exactly what vBseo does.

But I wonder, why would you rewrite the rest of the board and keep usernames un-rewritten? I think it would be useful, I've had quite a few hits just for my user pages a lone and it would make it look cleaner - - in my opinion. Maybe you could add it to the xml file and leave it as an option to enable/disable?

I want to use it in an german board and maybe it is possible to replace the öäü's in something like this:

$totitle = array('-', '-', 'ae', 'oe', 'ue', 'ss');
$titlenew = strtolower(str_replace($fromtitle, $totitle, $title));

If you copy the original .htacess into your webspace, you can delete it, but you must not.
If you loaded it as a plugin, you have to delete it as a plugin ;)

I installed this one on my Testboard and had some problems. The [L] flag won't work for me. I used the [R] flag and also some combination of both. I all cases it worked, but I get the old URL style "forumdisplay.php?f=xxx" after useing the new link.

Is there something I'm missing? We are using Apache2. Our access logs shows me a 400 error when I use the [L] flag alone.

Any idea?

Found it! My ************ confixx server software placed the rewrite rules in the virtualhost part, not in the directory. So putting it into the directory part worked.

I try to include the vbadvanced portal in the xml file like this:
OR THIS_SCRIPT == 'adv_index'
but the link in the template is:
<td class="<if condition="$show['lastpost']">alt1<else />alt2</if>"><span class="smallfont">
<a href="forumdisplay.php?$session[sessionurl]f=$thread[forumid]">$thread[forumtitle]</a>
</span></td>
</if>
I dont fint out where the $thread[forumtitle] is generated for the adv_portal_latesttopicbits.

I found that a little suspicious as well. VBSeo is far better than any free application, in my opinion.

I'm still wondering, is there an easy way to rewrite user's pages so everything is rewritten, not just forums and threads?

Also, is there anyway to rewrite it so when someone goes to showthread.php or whatever, that it redirects to the proper mod_Rewritten page? I don't want anyone being able to go to a regular thread, just the rewritten threads.

is it also possible to rewrite the forums too?
I mean the Links in the navigation forumdisplay & page=xx

I have 20 replies before page splits, yet this hack forces my showthread to be 10, so it results in my forumdisplay to have the page numbers based on 20 replies and inside the thread there is 4 pages, when my thread should only be 2.

We stress tested the hack on our beta board and found one strange thing. If you name the a thread like this: "p2p macht das Forum kaputt, hehe" you will get "http://************/t19-p2p-macht-das-forum-kaputt-hehe.html"
You will always get to the second page off this thread. Also the pagenav for page shows: "http://******/t19-p-p2p-macht-das-forum-kaputt-hehe.html" you will get to the second page. I believe the first page must have a "p1" instead of only a "p".

I think the 'newestpost' should be rewritten too because it's still showing the php file for that. This plugin needs some updating to rewrite everything instead of just bits and pieces....

Also, is there anyway to rewrite it so when someone goes to showthread.php or whatever, that it redirects to the proper mod_Rewritten page? I don't want anyone being able to go to a regular thread, just the rewritten threads.mod rewrite doesn't handle db lookups, so it would not know the name of the thread by the url itself.

something would have to be created in php itself. it would need to read the url and make a query if the pattern matched showthread.php.

I haven't read through this entire thread so I appologize if this has been mentioned, but I noticed that the 'whos online' area will not display correctly if a user is viewing a re-written thread.

It just shows 'viewing thread' without the link below it. You can tell they are viewing a re-written url by hovering over the question mark.

I've got a idea as alittle workaround for the WOL-Problem:

Couldn't you take the inforamtion, displayed in on the questionmark and parse it to the Line below "viewing Thread: " ?

You can see it by the URL which Thread it is and its mor comfortable then waiting for the alt-tag on each single user..

Ditto. This hack breaks any user's preference as to how many posts they want per page, and does all at 10 posts per page :(

The latest version does no such thing, I use 40 posts per page based on my preferences - the most recent beta was/is available on the teckreviews site mentioned in earlier posts.

Hi all !
First of all, sorry for my bed english, I'm form Italy :o
I have a little problem after the installation of this mod: if in one forum I have a discussion of (as in my forum) 22 pages, if I click on "go to last page" I'm redirected to the 2nd page and not to the 22nd !
Checking the link I found http://www.xxxxxxx.com/forum/t27-p2-problemi.html
I suppose that t27 means thread nr. 27
and p2 means page 2 but this is not correct as I have 22 pages and not 2 !
How can I solve this problem ?
Thanks for your help.

Get the newest beta - available @ teckreviews.com...

...err... Site appears to be down...

Then again, support and development seems to be dwindling, you may be better served going to a different product - I'm pondering the move myself as it appears things are going to the wayside with this particular release and there are still minor problems with the newest beta.

this happene with all the links of the forums.

Please suggest a solution

i just read all the 47 thread pages!
This is a great hack but still needs some work. Give Dean some time.
To those who want a number of posts per page different than 10 and don't want to update (or can't update) to the latest beta version, you can replace

pp=10

in the .htaccess file for anything you want

I have 20 replies before page splits, yet this hack forces my showthread to be 10, so it results in my forumdisplay to have the page numbers based on 20 replies and inside the thread there is 4 pages, when my thread should only be 2.
changing pp=20 will solve that

does Google penalize you if you have the regular URL like url/showthread.php?t=3333 and the mod rewrite URL url/t3333-this-subject-in-rewrite.html that points to the same page. Is this duplicate content?

The reason I am asking is my forum is not indexed on 2 of my sites and is indexed OK on another one. I was wondering if this mod would hurt indexing when google spiders through the non-rewrite urls.

This works like a dream, but I'm curious if all you guys knew how to tweak the .htaccess file. I actually took the guts of the .htaccess from a post on the front page of this thread. From the looks of this thread, it seems this script actually writes the .htaccess file for you and all you do is copy and upload.

Does this script write the .htaccess reg exp code for you? Or is everyone but me a regular expression expert?

<added> and I still don't quite understand why the "new post" page can't be done...I can understnad why the "last post" can't be done, but you'd think the "new post" page could at least be done as the urls there are: showthread.php?t=####

Or is there a new upload and I haven't figured out how to get it?

Yes duplicate content will get you some issues with Google. BUT there is a solution. Create or edit your robots.txt file to include your Forum's PHP Files.

This way only your SEO'ed content will be spidered.
