Sorry, I do not know. I tried following the directions that were given to you, but just like you I do not see a 'none' option either... then again, Im not using the version from this thread, I am using v2.1 of the shout box.

It does for me, just change it once and next time you sign back on (be sure to hit the remember me button)
That doesn't work at least for me. And any other person I had test this method.

Hello,
Is it possible to show Shoutbox on the left sidebar? I'm talking about this (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=91888) hack.
Thank you in advance. :)

If you are one of the people having issues with the last fix I posted, try using the attached file instead. Let me know if this one works or not.
this is important, really should be on the main post, but anyways i thought id repeat it since it was what 70 pages ago.
if u replace your vbshout.php with this one Brad made you will be able to use stuff like ""*&^%$#@! in the shoutbox
thanks to Brad :)
All around the vbshout.php has many errors, Meeks has solved about all of them...
Alot of them are unsafe

I asked if this script used much of the CPU resources.
Depends on your server, some can handle it no problem, some not so much... I prefer the flatfile version which I run on my site.... hardly any hit on the CPU at all...

Of course it's the server. What else would it be? My site was slow with this mod and slowed the server down so much that I had to disable this mod because they suspended my account because I was using too many resources, once I did so my host reported that the server load dropped 50%, moved to a VPS and reenabled this hack and it was a lot better. Then I found the flat file version and haven't looked back since.

Is there a way in the next version you can add something that turns off the logs? The shoutbox is creating so many database errors because of the constant shout it logs and bandwith.

Change to:

There seems there is currently an exploit in the shoutbox where people can edit posts. I first thought it was one of my mods, but when I was the only staff member on and i was invisible it was still occuring, they were inserting porn pics and making chaos in the shoutbox, I have been using the shoutbox a year now with no problems and now I have had to turn it off.
I got a pm yesterday saying that people can also insert code into your database and cause lots of trouble on your site through the shoubox, so I would love an admin to look into urgently.
Thanks.

Just a FYI, this is great if used sparingly, if it's used like a chat room it will kill the server...we had to remove it from our bigger sites. The first post is correct, it is server intensive...

If you don't let the archive get to big it shouldn't be a problem

If you don't let the archive get to big it shouldn't be a problem I think he was more about talking about the ajax as well, having it refresh to often and having members sit on the index page can be a problem for larger sites. After having to close the shoutbox, I have noticed how much faster my site is now running.

Yes, it refreshes so often... I think the whole problem with server load is not so much that it refreshes, but that it has to pull from teh database everytime it does so. The 2.1 version fixed that by creating a flatfile so the only thing in the database is the archive which is only accessed if you go in it.

I've seen other cms package using shoutbox and ajax and they had the same issue with the load. Their workaround was to insert some code that allow you to change the refresh rate. I think that would be the ultimate addon on this hack at the moment.
Also another sweet improvement would be a lightbox on mouse over the user name displaying quick member information and avatar.

I guess if you don't have that good of bandwith or good host, there can be problems

Cant remember if i have posted this, but i have this installed and working perfectly with vBulletin 3.6.4
I do have one question though. I have installed some extra smilies since installing the shoutbox. How do i point the shoutbox to these new smilies? They are in a new category for smilies too. Or shoud i just move all the new smilies into the main category so they all show? I prefer to leave them where they are as it shows the name of the person that made most of the smilies in the selection box.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Edit: Fixed, i had show only 8 smilies, made it 0 for show all, and they are all showing now :)
Cheers for the great Mod, My Clan Members and I love using it
Thank you

I'm trying to fix a problem for several days. I searched on all the sites and i didn't found a solution. I think that i'm not the only person with this problem: GERMAN CHARACTERS.
I have the latest VB 3.6.4 installed with no other modifications on a Linux machine with PHP 4.3.9 and MySQL 4.1.20.
The collation in phpMyAdmin for all tables are "latin1_german1_ci", also for the table "shout" and its fields "s_shouts" and "s_data".
Somewhere in this board i found i thread with following hint. I had to put following phrase with the charset into the "vbshout.php". I did this:
<?php
/*======================================================================*\
|| #################################################################### ||
|| # vBShout v2 Created By Zero Tolerance [http://gzevolution.net] ||
|| #################################################################### ||
\*======================================================================*/
header('Content-Type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1');
// ---------------------------------------------------
// Start Set PHP Environment
// ---------------------------------------------------
error_reporting(E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE);
Now i (and some other german guys) have the following problem: the shoutbox works perfect but if we want to write words with characters like: ä, ö, ü, the shoutbox hangs until we refresh the browser. Other characters like: &, *, $ work correctly.
When i write in the file "vbshout.html" a character manualy like "ü ;" for ü, this character will be shown correctly!!!
Does anybody knows what could be the problem? Do i have to search in the SQL? Makes AJAX troubles? Is this a PHP problem?
Thanks for any hints!

Promotions to usergroup then ban usergroup from viewing shoutbox
The window does not show the shout after you post one. It works in IE but not in FireFox.
Someone must know this?
I am working on a new style and the vbshout is messing up the layout. Where or what do you do to revove the vbshout from the style?
Its a new style that was not made parent to anything else. I want to leave it in the default style so do not want to remove it completely. Just want to offer members another style if they do not want the shout box.

Some people have problems with german and greek characters in vbshout. I already wrote what the problem is: mod_security.
What i did was to write a .htaccess in the root with following phrases:
<IfModule mod_security.c>
SecFilterEngine Off
</IfModule>
After this .htaccess, vbshout worked correctly with german characters like ä, ü, ö!
It worked untill some "bad guys" tried to hack my board last night because mod_security was set to "off".
Now my question is: how to get mod_security work with vbshout? Which file is making troubles with mod_security? Is it vbshout.php in the root or is it vbshout.html in the map "sb"?
Is it possible to set mod_security to "off" only for these files and not to the whole vBulletin?
thx for any hints!

Yep this is what i said earlier, everyone can read the vbshout.php if they know the url to the file
and it don't take Einstein to figure that 1 out lol...
Anway, heres what i did, I renamed the vbshout.php and all references to vbshout.php in the

Hey
How can I move the shoutbox above the navbar?

Edit your navbar template and add $Shoutbox at the very beginning.
You probably also have to remove the following code from the "vBShout [Template Alteration]" plugin (at the very bottom):
switch ($vbulletin->options['shout_position'])
{
case 1:
$Position = '<!-- what\'s going on box -->';
break;
case 2:
$Position = '<!-- end what\'s going on box -->';
break;
case 4:
$Position = '<!-- main -->';
break;
default:
$Position = '$navbar';
break;
}
$vbulletin->templatecache['FORUMHOME'] = str_replace($Position, $Position . ' $Shoutbox', $vbulletin->templatecache['FORUMHOME']);

is it possible to allow guests to use the shoutbox?
Um, You would have to do ALOT of tweaking, since they don't have a profile if you clicked on the username when they post a shout.
Would be kind of werid in many ways :confused:
I tried to install the shoutbox, I had it working before I upgraded, but due to upgrading to 3.6.4 had touninstall it...
tried to re install and now nothing is coming up at all, not even the shoutbox

Any idea how to get moods to show up in the shoutbox? I have the moodmanager hack installed and it works fine just doesn't show up in the vbshout.
Mood manager would not show up in vBshout, That would be something nice to put in there though :)
Also would be kind of annyoing to see it over and over again
But shouldn't be too hard inserting the $mood manager thing in there

Incorrect, it is done on this site = http://simplegfx.net/forums/forums.php

No, not hard at all. Quite simple really.
In all shout templates remove the <if condition="$bbuserinfo[userid] > 0"> conditionals.
Then in vbshout.php remove this snippet..
$vbulletin->userinfo['userid'] > 0 &&
With it like this guests will show up with a blank username, but one could use an if conditional to say if -> guest output Guest for the username, i guess... I dont know of the conditional and am too tired to start diggin it out,,,
As you can see you can post as a guest on my test set up.

Just a Question, my hosting is telling me my shout box is using too source and his server is getting slow, personaly I think he is full of it..... can someone tell me is it true ?
This shoutbox does always seem slow.
Its your server according to many people in the thread saying"server load"
IMO its the shoutbox
EaglezEye

I would agree with it being the shoutbox. Mine seems slow at times to update the shout.
Is there a log kept anywhere of all the shouts? If there is I can't find it, just the last 20 or so shouts. Is there a way to create one? Any help appreciated.
Click on the shoutbox title and it will take you to the archive

Actually this is what they say. Maybe I mis interpreted it
We've noticed your site using a lot of server resources and in particular it appears to be the script below causes a higher than allowed CPU resource usage. Do you know what may be causing this and how it could be rectified? Thank you for your cooperation
Top Process %CPU 29.5 httpd [www.binarytechzone.com] [/vbshout.php]
Top Process %CPU 29.0 httpd [www.binarytechzone.com] [/vbshout.php]
Top Process %CPU 26.3 httpd [www.binarytechzone.com] [/vbshout.php]
Does that make any sense to anyone? lol
I've done what you suggested but see no change. What would happen if I use the repair function? Do I lose any data? Or does it change any mods or whatever on the site?
Jorrit787
20 Feb 2007, 20:25
The Shoutbox uses a LOT of resources because its AJAX functions check every so many seconds to see if there are new shouts.
I don't see what difference optimizing tables would make.
For those having problems with the shout box using too many resources I would check out the 2.1 version found at www.vbhackers.com as it uses a flatfile instead of pulling directly from teh database.

I really love the time stamp feature almost a must to have. What gets me is that this just started happening in the last week or so. Its been installed on my board for quite sometime now. And I went to look at the other one you posted. Why does he claim that VB broke this version? The other version doesnt seem like it has any other benefits other than being flatline. I have this version running on a few sites without any issues of this nature.....
I did just read that my host upgraded the MySql could that be a cause?

The time stamp can be hard coded in to the shout box, and a user has explained how to in the vBShout 2.1 thread at vbhackers.
The whole advantage is the flatline, which in my opinion, is a lot better solution than directly accessing the shouts from the database, and will be 1/10th the resource hog. The moment I installed it, I noticed this.
I did just read that my host upgraded the MySql could that be a cause?
Highly unlikely, mine was the same way. It could be because you have not cleared your shout archive lately.

hhhmmm pretty sure you should be able to run it no problem I would redo your install making sure you follow the directions very closely. And I would think this is not the proper place to ask for support for that version considering it was not released here.
Is there any way or hack to keep your shoutbox $TopTen statistics while flushing out the database cache of all previous shouts?
anyone know a way of doing this?
The point of this would be to keep the top ten shout count that users have accumulated without having to keep the large database table

i installed this a couple of weeks ago all is well but i noticed in the server logs if someone has the forum open in there browser and forget about it (tabbed browsing) or if the user becomes idle then for the next few hours or more they would have called the vbshoutbox.php file hundreds of times.
So i would like the coders to make it timeout for example. if a member or unregistered user hangs around on a page with vbshout (i have vba) and they dont make a shout within 10 or 15 minutes or the user is idle then the vbsoutbox will stop refreshing.
http://dontstayin.com has a chat system like vbshout but better that stops after a few minutes if you are idle.
i'm thinking it wouldn't be that hard for a coder to add this?

Little problem here, but maybe the problem is an issue for my users, not for me, I don't know.
Everybody can see the shoutbox, but several users can not use the shoutbox, they can type in text, but when clicking the "shout" button, nothing happens.
This was tested with IE6, IE7, Firefox and Avant browser.
Other users, also tested with IE6 and Firefox, do not have any problems.
Could the reason be that some of the users might not have Sun Java installed?
Or is it something else?
All characters show fine, exept for ampersan. If I type: &, it shows as: &.
Anyone know how to fix this?

I made a autoprune function for vBshout.
Just download the attached file and put in the /includes/cron directory.
Then make a new scheduled task (see attached jpg).
I run it every night at 3 o clock but offcourse your free to run it more often than that.
What is does: It will delete all shouts that are older than 24 hours.
This way you will allways have an archive that's holds no shouts that are older than two days.
You can alter the deletion time in the php by altering the "(TIMENOW - (60 * 60 * 24)" statement.
Enjoy :)
Replaced the php with the right one
Thank you for this!!! You're awesome, Dude!!!:up: :D

If you want to have shoutbox on all forumdisplay pages:
1) Change the hook location for 'vBShout [Template Alteration]' to: forumdisplay_complete
2) Edit the plugin code for 'vBShout [Template Alteration]'
Find: '$vbulletin->templatecache['FORUMHOME'] = str_replace($Position, $Position . ' $Shoutbox', $vbulletin->templatecache['FORUMHOME']);'
Replace it with:
$vbulletin->templatecache['FORUMDISPLAY'] = str_replace('$navbar', '$navbar' . ' $Shoutbox', $vbulletin->templatecache['FORUMDISPLAY']);
This is a quick and dirty hack. The shoutbox will only show up under navbar!
3) If you want the shoutbox to show up only in certain forums:
a. add
if ($forumid ==13)
{
In the beginning of the above plugin. 13 is the forum ID you want the shoutbox to show.
b. add
}
in the end of the code.
This is really cool in theory, but I'm sorry to say, it didn't work for me.:(

I told them, javascript is enabled, they all have it installed , newest version. It's really strange because half of them has no problem, half of them do.
Tested with IE6, IE7, Firefox and Advance browser.
Furthermore I had them disable all things like firewall's, popup killers etc. to test, but this did not help.
I also have a link which starts java chat. They have no problem with this java chat.
Furthermore there is still the issue of not displaying the shoutbutton well if placed below the text, like in #64.
And then there is the problem with the length of the shoutwindow growing and growing. But it can be that this is a problem related to the hack to setup vbshout in VBAdvanced.
On my forum it seems that anyone can use the /prune command. Can anyone tell me where in the code i can change it for a command of my choice ie /allclear.

Whenever I use special characters, they will not display properly in the shoutbox, if I were to use < it would turn out like '&ab or something, is there a setting to fix this? Thanks.
maybe you all shoud use the thread search function, being as though the answer has been posted lots of times in this thread alone :)

That fixes the quotation marks but not the other symbols. I typed &%*<>, and they came out looking like this... &%*<>
And no, Shazz and GoNz00, the answer is NOT in here, cuz I've searched. And if you think it is, PROVE it and SHOW it to me.
