See the original thread for details of the problems..

Basically everything has been fixed so this works with existing installs and not just clean ones, also no error message about a non-matching release anymore.. attachments are now correctly displayed as they would be in a thread and this hack No longer inteferes with non-pm attachments.. So all the good bits left (Attachments in Private Messages, using the existing usergroup permissions) and all the bad bits taken out.

Also I'm willing to support this hack, which is why I took the decision to start a new thread rather than use the existing one so I can easier support the hack and problems with this plugin not the old buggy one. (or at least that's the theory)

Please uninstall the old plugin first, thanks.

That means the plugin was unable to get attachments permissions for the user. The solution is to locate a thread in your forum (one that shouldn't be deleted in a long time, it doesn't matter if it's closed). Remember it's threadid
Go to Plugin Manager and click on "private attachments - get posthash and allow attachments"

Find: $_pmt = 1;


Replace the "1" with the threadid

This works by tricking vbulletin that the pm is infact a thread, but on some systems the trick used to do that will fail. In such a case an old thread is used to hold the attachments in such a way that they are stored and viewed in the pm, but not viewed when the thread is viewed.

The permissions are still in effect if a usergroup does not have permission to send attachments they cannot send ones via pm either.

Thanks for the suggestions Kirby, I certainly plan to do just that once I've had some more A. Ok's for everything working as is.. I didn't want to make it too complex too soon and not be able to fix any little bugs that may come up.

A little more complex.. allow the usergroups to have attachments, but in the forum permissions manager you need to make sure each forum doesn't allow attachments, that way pm's can still have attachments while the forums do not..

I wanted to re-install this but have been paranoid since the last one wiped out 6 months worth of attachments. I installed this one, hopefully no problems. I'm still paranoid though and worried. haha! But I did make a backup this time.

Whenever I send an attachment in a PM, nothing shows up in the message the user gets. I have attachments allowed on the forum, so that can't be why. If I copy and paste the attachment link after I upload it it works but it never shows up in the message. Hope that makes sense.

I don't know, I removed the hack after having the problems and after installing 3.5 gold I reinstalled it for the hell of it to see if it'd work and it did.

this is something ive never understood, why not give the PM attachments its own table in the database, so it doesnt have to run off the normal attachments table

my site the attachment table is 785MBs (rard), so its big, and it would run better if it had its own database table

snake - thats a rather snotty answer, the thread title does say 3.5, doesnt say RCx or gold, however the version does say RC2, but so many times i have seen known coders say "there were little changes from any of the RC versions to gold, so u can assume all 3.5 hacks work on gold"

Me. I have 3.5.0 Gold and it works just fine. (my attachments don't have the "attached images" text or border but I promise you it's an attachment)

The hack is working, however when I click on the attachments link in the User CP the attachment in the PM is not listed.

Does this mean that PM attachments will not be counted toward attachment quotas?

Edit: Plus, I don't like that it does not check if a user has attachment permissions. I have had to add an <if> statement to stop users without attachment permission from using the attachments in PMs system.

Sorry, the true 3.5 Gold Version is being delayed because of problems with quotas, I hope to release it soon..

Although this version as is does work with 3.5 Gold.. IF You just follow the instructions as they are set out, always take care when installing a modification, make sure code is added in the right place and that your editing the right templates.

Don't fully understand the language but it looks like you've not run all the sql queries needed when installing the hack. You need to add an attach to the pmtext table which it looks like you haven't done..

Umm... Doesn't newattachment.php receive something like posthash or something of that kind that identifies whether what it's for? I am not sure, but when I did the "attachment in calendar" hack, I did something like that to distinguish between attachment that were intended for posts and attachments that were intended for calendar entries :)

Oh... I remember - the way I did it was I added a new field to the attachment table that identified where the attachment had to belong.. didn't use permissions for threads... I'm sure this can be done for PMs too :)

Yes the true 3.5 Gold Version allows for seperate quotes and permissions for attachments in pm's than to threads.. So you can have a user set to no for pm attachments but yes for threads, and vice versa.. also a usergroup can have an unlimited quota for threads, but only 100Mb for PMs.. pm attachments are now stored in a seperate table or directory (depending on your file storage settings) right now it does require a number of edits but they are slowly being worked out of the final product..

A "Lite" Version (Zend Encoded and with a max of fifty pm attachments sent. so you can get a feel for how the system works) will be available shortly.

A "FULL" Version (Not Encoded and no Limits) is available now but due to the amount of work that has gone into this isn't free. As all commercial talk is a no-no. PM me for details.

Were do the attachments go? I attach to a PM, it lists it in the popup window, I submit. When I do it again, the popup window doesnt show it in my attach inventory, nor does it in my main attachment inventory. Is it just a floating attachment or something? Oh and where it would normally list my attach inventory, it says array and nothing more.

Nvermind.
I configured config.php to allow me run quiries from admincp (used to run form phpmyadmin).
I ran them, everything is back to normal but I still cannot send attachments. I attach them, but when other person opens pm he sees no attachments there. No errors.

Right now how should the replacement look?

zooman, the second way. It needs an integer number of an active thread that is on your board. What I would do would be find the BIGGEST forum, go to the very last page and the last post and use that thread id number.

i went to the right plugin and change the 1 to a thread that is very old and wont ever be seen or deleted (110)

Well i have all the modifications setup up on 3.5.4 I just wish there was an easier way then editing the sql query tables.. The reason i say this is i got a failed message which i didn't want to try it again unless i either backup my database or write over it and hope it doesn't mess up.. I was cruising right through the installation with no problems right up until the sql query. I wasn't able to execute an sql query from the vb control panel? I've installed several other hacks without a problem.

Presumably has something to do with access read/write permissions for the database? Opened up the file manager from my web control panel and the folder permissions seemed to be set correctly. I opend up myphpadmin and was going to try and run the querys from the tables following the instructions but quickly got in over my head.

The easiest thing for me would probably be just to execute the query from the vb control panle.

Any help in pointing me in the right direction to execute the sql query would be appreciated.

you need to edit your config.php with your id to allow to run queries,go to your server where your forum is installed then find includes folder inside the includes folder you will find config.php look for this code note in my code id is set at 1,edit to your user id then save you will now be able to run queries from your admin CP hope that helps

the problem I had is that it gets the attachment permissions from thread '1' by default, but if thread 1 is deleted, or has restircted access to certain usergroups, then it won't work. There are instructions in the initial post to change the thread to one that won't get deleted, and that everyone has access too

I am using VbSEO, not sure if that matters.

Tried the first thread id and the last and several in betwen, nothing worked. Doesn't seem to be calling the hook. Can I recommend a product install?

If I click on any attachment in the PM, the Message
"Invalid Attachment specified" comes as "vBulletin Message".
The other Things on the Hack work. I can attach something to a PM,
then I can send it and even receive it, but the attachment is not
downloadable from the received PM in finally.

Another important Information:

This Hack is not compatible with the "Welcome PM" of vBulletin 3.60
If you enabled Welcome-PM, nobody can register on your Forum, all
People get a white Page. I lost about 250 new Members till I in finally
understood, that the PM-Hack not works with the Welcome-PM!

I re-installed under 3.6 and well, it looks like it is uploading, but when viewing the PM all I get is a red X that is not clickable to view the attachement.

I did a complete reinstall. Made sure all of the sql queries were right. Everything. Ok. I will try again. I revert the templates and see if that makes a difference.

i was going to unistall this plugin, coz is not working on vb3.6.0.

Damn! I did a complete reinstall of all the vb 3.6 files. I uninstalled PM attachments fully and did a completely clean install and I am still getting the same errors that I attached above. Clicking on the screwed up thumbnail just says invalid link specified.

I had the thi hack installed but as it never worked i have decided to uninstall it.
Now since doing this i am getting db errors, such as below

When i installed the hack i had to run the following queries

Now in the instructions there is no advice as to uninstalling the hack nor removing the said queries, it looks like my db error is something to do with the said queries as well.

Can anyone advise on how to undo what the queries did please?
