Bump Threads/Make Threads older
Description
This is a port of "Bump thread and make thread older" by Kentaurus who deserves full credits for the Hack idea.
Bumping a thread is something you eventually need. A thread that has some days
old, it is in the second page of your forum or only a few positions below and you want
attention to be in it again. Posting makes the thread on top, but you don't want
to post in the thread.
Additionally I have added an option called "make thread older" or "debump". This makes
your thread one day older, making room for new threads in the top of the forumdisplay.
Why this? It is useful for closed threads that you don't want to be taking your
user's attention anymore, yet you don't want to delete them. Just send them to the
second page, is takes the same effect as forgetting about them.

1 Product XML (3 Plugins, 4 Phrases)
Currently only single Thread handling (though Thread Tools) is supported; future Versions might support inline moderation as well.

Awesome!!
Just installed and very initial testing shows a winner!
This is a great addition and very happy you decided to port it - so massive thanks to both you and Kentaurus!

Thanks!
Very nice hack and great work.
an idea for a future version:
you can only bump threads that are older then x days or are on site x or behind of the threadoverview.

Hello ,
Can I make the Thread older than 1 month foe example , not just for one day ,
Regards
Love you Kirby!
Just wondering; would it be possible (in an easy way) to add a line of code so if you close a topic it automatically gets debumped? (for 48 hours or so) Would be a nice "replacement" for the much requested "move closed topics to the bottom of the page"-hack. Thanks for your response ;)

Awesome. I run a freebie and contesting site and contest pages get larger and larger and it's a big pain to bump all the time. This will make a great addition. Thank's.
I'm not sure if it's supposed to do this but it appears that once bumped, the thread will stay marked as unread unless you mark it read or post to it.
I just told my users it was the new "force them to post hack".
im getting the same, had to disable until this is resolved, threads just stay up there ? open a hundred times and it still shows unread ??

Bigger issue for me is, the same thread title remains visible on the forums page regardless of bump status.
do you others with the problem also run the prevent bumping older threads plugin ?
I wonder if it's a conflict with 'Hook Location : showthread_start'
I'm not sure if it's supposed to do this but it appears that once bumped, the thread will stay marked as unread unless you mark it read or post to it.
I just told my users it was the new "force them to post hack".
I've got the same problems. I don't have any other hacks installed.

Is there any way to get this to bump multiple post's instead of just the one. We have contest's that expire by date and we try and bump the older one's just before they expire. with having so many page's it would make it easier if we could bump more then one post at a time. Thanks.
any news on fixing the rather major bug ?

Thanks installed at www.gamerzneeds.net
However there are a few glitches, like you can make the post older by 1 day, but on forum home it will still be the last post etc
but apart from that, a great addition...hopefully the few bugs can be fixed
Andreas
09 Nov 2005, 03:45
The "Bugs" most likely won't be fixed, as this is just a requested port of a vBulletin 3.0 Hack which did not have such features (eg. adjusting last post and such).
This will do, till someone makes the slippery plugin.

I believe only Admins, SuperMods, and Mods of a particular forum can do it.

well if it's an admin only feature I don't see how useful it is...because registered users are still gonna reply to a thread with the text "bump" to ge it to the top. Andreas is there a simply adjustment in order to make this accessible to all users?
Thats why I wish there was a slippery hack.
installed, seems to work for 3.5.1... thanks Andreas...
Um, is this compatible with 3.0.0 by any chance? I haven't upgrade yet I am planning on it in the future but if it would work then I'd like to go ahead and get it up. Where does it get uploaded to? That's where I'm a tad confused.

Andreas,
I noticed you've done several hacks based on 'bumping' on replies. And I was curious, do you know if it would be possible to have some sort of feature that would allow you to have a thread stop being bumped after a specific number of replies? aka an automated version of this hack..
They call it 'saging' on a lot of imageboard (4chan if you've heard of it) and I think it would be a great feature to reduce the amount of spammers.
Anyhow, I appreciate you reading this, and hope you reply.

I agree 110%! This is a good idea gone bad. It would make more sense if only the original poster could bump it since 99.9% of the time only they want to do the bumping. Plus once someone reads the thread it should show up as being read. Hopefully a postbit button will be added for the original poster. Maybe put a timer on the button so it only shows up every 24 hours (to cut down on bumping abuse). Could be a great addition to every forum, but as it sits we sadly won't install it. Close but no cigar :ermm:
Personally, I got a no-bumping policy on my own board, because if this was available to the author of the thread, they would simply be bumping their own threads all the time to make sure they stayed on top. Like, I have fanfictions on my board, and the authors could constantly hit the bumper to make sure it got everyone's attention.
Edit: Any way to make it so that when you choose Make Thread Older, you can enter manually how many days you want it to age? Because if you want it to go to the bottom, you'll have to click many times! :)

Also, is there a way to set it so that an admin can "unbump" so that it goes away from the top of the list? I had a mod bump a thread, and left it for a while, and I as an admin could not unbump it and make it go away.

To go one step further, it would be great if an Admin (and ONLY an admin) could send posts to the bottom of a category (instead of just one day away). When an Admin performed this action that particular thread would become unbumpable again and remain at the bottom. It would also be great if the Admin could mark particular threads as being unbumbable by anyone else, even if someone posts again in that thread :classic:

Does make sense to me, too. Even in small forums you will have to work hard to get the post disappear from the first page ... any chance you will get your hands on this, Andreas ?

I had installed this when we first upgraded. We were hacked and lost about a month of activity from the database, including the upgrade and installation of this mod....sooooo I reupgraded and re-installed this mod. Still works as it did before......
however.... I now have in the moderator dropdown menu.... two choices for bump and 2 choices for make thread older. First set doesn't work, but the second does.
How can I remove the first set?
Thanks in advance!

that would be an excellent idea...as then u could "mass bump" certain threads all at once, instead of one at a time.....
this is needed when a section is extremely busy, and threads gert missed by members coming on the board, using a top 10 thread list etc........older threads could be missed

and inline moderation etc.

an auto-bump would be cool for me.....

It's impossible to bump more than one thread at a time and I think it would be a great feature.

u dont need an image use ur imagination ;p
u get a redirect message that says ur thread has been moved to back to the thread, and then it takes u to the forum u were in
making it older it gives a different redirect saying thread us now 1 day older
would also be great it u could set # of days like say i want to make something a week older, id have to do it 7 times
