vBSEO Conditional Signatures for vBulletin 3.5.x

Overview
============================

An issue all vBulletin admins must consider is the impact of member signatures on the search engine optimization of thread pages. Signatures add keywords to the page which typically contain links to external websites.

This can reduce the density of keywords relevant to the thread topic, interrupt the flow of the discussion, and allow Google PageRank leak because of the outbound links.

The affect on keyword density of the thread page is even more prominent when signatures are included with posts of minimum length (e.g. 1 or 2 sentences only). In fact, users often submit brief postings in order to promote the websites listed in their signatures only.

With enough valuable content, any forum can generate revenue via Google Adsense or other programs. Therefore, vBulletin SEO issues must NOT be overlooked.

A simple solution is to disable signatures within vB Admin CP. However, this is not recommended. Many of your forums valuable contributing members are encouraged to continue building your content because of the exposure their signature can receive.

The "vBSEO Conditional Signatures" plugin provides a solution that enhances SEO for your thread pages without disabling signatures in vB Admin CP.

What does it do?
============================

Increases keyword density for keywords related to the thread topic.
Reduces outbound links.
Boosts ratio of content to outbound links.
Conserves Google PageRank.
Improves onpage search engine optimization for relevant keywords.
Encourages users to post more detailed messages (helping you build more valuable content).
Discourages users from posting with the sole purpose of establishing outbound links to their website(s) within the thread.
Reduce the amount of signature clutter within threads.
Optionally applies signature actions for pages accessible by guests and search engine crawlers only.How does it work?
============================

Depending on your settings, this plugin will either:

Add rel=nofollow to links in the signatures of posts, OR
Remove the signatures from posts.Note: These actions only occur when the # of words in the post is less than the minimum you specify. Users who post messages that meet the minimum word count will have their signatures displayed without changes.

Installation & Configuration
============================

Note: This plugin is for vBulletin versions 3.5.x only.

To Install:

Go to your ADMIN CP > Plugin System > Manage Products
Click on '[Add/Import Product]'
Browse to find the vbseo_cond_sigs.xml file
Click 'Import'To Configure:

Go to your ADMIN CP > vBulletin Options > vBSEO Conditional Signatures
Edit settings as desired.Settings Description
============================

Select Signature Action for Short Posts

Select either 'Add rel=nofollow' or 'Remove Signature' to specify how signatures should be handled for posts that do NOT meet the Minimum Post Length (see option below). Adding rel=nofollow will instruct search engines to NOT crawl the links or pass PageRank. The 'Remove Signature' option will remove the signature entirely for short posts which will typically improve the keyword relevancy of the page in addition to conserving PageRank.

Apply Conditional Signatures for Guests / Spiders Only
Select "Yes" to apply signature modifications for guests (and spiders) only.

Set Minimum Post Length (# of Words)

Posts that do NOT meet the Minimum Post Length will have the selected Signature Action applied (see above).

Set Minimum Post Count

For posts authors who has posted less than the count specified, links in signatures will be either removed or rel="nofollow" added.

Set Maximum Posts Per User Per Page

For the authors who posted multiple messages per page, only the first specified count of posts will have a signature.

Specify Excluded Users (IDs)

Provide a comma-separated list of user IDs. Excluded users ALWAYS have their signature included without ANY changes.

Specify Excluded User Groups (IDs)

Provide a list of user group IDs separated by spaces. Users from excluded groups ALWAYS have their signature included without ANY changes.

Shouldn't you add a rel="nofollow" to their profile page as well??? Just a thought as those pages are indexed by search engines.

jward

@BrentWilson:

This mod is focused on improving SEO on a per thread basis, allowing admins to require users to provide a post of significant length and/or make a demonstrated effort to contribute to the community (i.e. minimum post count) before giving them the privilege of displaying their signature (and/or having links within their signature free from rel=nofollow attributes).

This is particularly important for vBSEO-enabled forums who can generally expect to have a higher Google PageRank on their thread pages. Reducing unnecessary use of signatures with outbound links can conserve PageRank.

Great! Installed with ease.

So what is everyone doing with this hack? What is the Minimum Post Length everyone is using. Do you use rel=nofollow or just remove the signature if below the threshold?

I remove the signature if keyword count is less then 40.

jward
13 Nov 2005, 11:28
@mycolumbus:

My recommendation would be to remove the signature for posts under the minimum word count (40 seems reasonable), especially with the new feature allowing the removal only for guests and search engine crawlers.

Also, with the new guest only removal feature, you might consider setting the minimum post length even higher to further minimize density reduction of topic related keywords.

Do not understand..

Search engines always view the forum as unregistered users. You can simply disable signatures (if you so choose). However, signatures provide a benefit to members who contribute to the website. They contribute to discussions and help you build content. In return they are rewarded with valuable link backs to their websites.

This plugin helps to ensure that members demonstrate more responsible posting habits before they get the benefit of signature exposure and linkbacks.

I have a question about your modification.

Cleanup HTML code by removing unnecessary whitespace and comment tags from the output. This boosts your C2C ratio (Content to Code) and reduces the size of all vB forum and thread pages resulting in lower bandwidth requirements, faster downloads, and fast page display for your forum members and visitors.

This is just nonsense. What evidence do you have to back this up as having any relevance to search engines? I have not even heard of the term Content-to-code ratio in the SEO world, in the year I have been working in the field.

Is it possible for certain URLs to not have the rel=nofollow Because I would like some urls to be spidered in sigs. If this cant be done so far, is it possible for a future release? and if so, how long would it take you to update this?

Thanks heaps.

seo guy,

unfortunately, we do not have a version of vBSEO Conditional Signatures for vBulletin3.0.x, but it should be possible to port it using the existing code.

Just wanted to be sure again;

Set Minimum Post Length (# of Words) = 1 and no links in the signatures will be followed, right?

Thanks

iojam
27 May 2006, 21:49
NeutralizeR,

nope, it means that all posts with number of words >=1 will NOT have rel=nofollow added. You should set this option to a big value to apply "nofollow" to signatures in all posts.

What type of performance hit could we expect from this if there's say 1000 users online?

iojam
16 Aug 2006, 22:28
yellowbird,

it is executed per postbit display hook on showthread pages and processes signatured only (not the whole post content), so it should be unnoticed in most cases.

I installed this on vB 3.63, and set it to show only one signature per page, yet it appears it is still showing a signature in each post by the same member.

Do I have to wait until they post again before I see the results of showing only one signature per page? Or did I set something wrong?

I have the Set Maximum Posts Per User Per Page set to 1

Thanks in advance.

clearchannel,

do you have "Signature Action" option set to "remove signature"? (default is to add rel="nofollow")

Just installed on vb 3.8.2

One noob question

1.
If I choose rel="nofollow" as first option
2.
Apply Conditional Signatures For Guests Only= NO
3.
Set Minimum Post Length (# of Words)=100

So spiders will not pick up signature data if posts does not have for ex 100words
and signatures will be vissible for all ? (but those pages will be indexed just without sig?)

And how it works with already indexed pages befor installing this hack?

Thanks

It keeps telling me wrong user/pass in the stats tab login, and where exactly do I paste my code from google analytics in my style manager of templates in order for the stats to be TRACKED ON ALL PAGES. Is there one template that you can put it in that it WILL WORK and it WILL track ALL pages at once?

Hope someone can help me, cause google analytics says unkown status, meaning it cannot find my script on my site.

Hope someone can solve these 2 issues I have.

washingtonboise
28 Aug 2010, 16:01
Wait a minute!

This is Conditional Signatures v 1.4.1
A higher version, 1.4.2 is available at vbseo.com if you log in and go to their 'downloads' section. (Release date: October 25, 2006) A year more current than the release date in this thread.

That suggests that this version is outdated and a new thread should be provided for the new version if they're going to distribute at vbulletin.org

Perhaps this thread should be closed.

BigJohnny
24 Sep 2010, 21:37
unable to download that. after registering and filling out all the crap, you get an invalid attachment error.

washingtonboise
25 Sep 2010, 06:26
Current version is still 3.x
If that's what you're on, then try downloading from the vbseo website directly instead of from vbulletin.org, you might find an updated version.

hi, i am trying to use this plugin for my vbseo forum for create usergroup, who get access to post dofollow links. But the plugin is not working. The link still shows nofollow on the link. Can anyone guide me how i can make signature link dofollow for specific user group. I am currently using new upgraded version - [Latest version available: 4.0.8].

Thanks

It doesn't support usergroup level control.
However, one user developed a modification to allow it.
See their post (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showpost.php?p=805881&postcount=23).

i am sorry guys

just want to make sure for users that using vbseo (http://www.vbseo.com), almost all of us already set nofollow for external links in vbseocp, so do we still need this vBSEO Conditional Signatures mod or not? as its looks like have same way and purpose

its looks like if you already installing vbseo and set nofollow for external links in vbseocp you dont need this mod again

how about that

Smile :-)
29 Jul 2011, 16:57
@basketmen, enter to a thread in your forum, view the source and look for nofollow in signatures links.
if you already have -> you don't need this mod.

if you don't know how to do it, just leave here (or in a pm) a link to a thread in your forum.
