NNTP Gateway for Usenet ( Newsgroups ), Mailing Lists
Developer Last Online: Jul 2012
The latest version: V3.5.0Alpha 1 (21 Jul 2005)
What is it? This hack provides a gateway from vBulletin forums to the USENET. It allows forum members to read newsgroup messages as well as to send posts to the newsgroups. In a nutshell, it turns vBulletin forums into a basic function news reader. For an added bonus, this package also supports mailing list archive and forum to mailing list gateway. The software retrieves messages from a pop3 account and import them into the forums threaded. It also allows a forums user to send messages to the mailing list by the forum posting interface. Why? The gateway will be appreciated by forum members who do not know how to set up a news reader, or people who do not have port 119 open in their network. A forum interface to read and post news are often considered to be better than a news reader. The gateway adds more contents to your forums and allows the members to interact with wider audience. It is common to see new users signing up to use this feature. History This hack was originally coded by Gilby for vB2. I modified the hack to work with vB3 and have been maintaining and improving the hack. I have now done the modification for this to work with vB3.5. The very original hack by Gilby can be found here: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showt...7&page=1&pp=15 The vB3 version can be found here: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=65152 Features Some of the features and improvement include:
Future development
What do you need and do not need? You do not need to edit vB php files. No need to manually run SQL. Installation Basically the AdminCP interfaces take care of installation as well as upgrade in the background. Back up your database first. The scripts can modify your database without alerting you! Please follow the instructions in the readme.txt file for more details. It is not a must to click "INSTALL" for this hack if you use it, I do try better answering the questions from people who do. Support Please post your support questions to this thread. Please check the FAQ in the second post within this thread first. It may be surprising, but it is possible your question is answered in the adminCP NNTP settings. Please always provide more details about your problem. Examples and debug messages will certainly help. Well, if you don't even try to have some effort to compose your question, the answer you get may also not include much effort. ![]() ================== UPDATES ====================== Jul 21 2005 (release version 3.5.0 Alpha 1) AdminCP xml file is written by Kadence.
Quick installation instruction: 1) Upload files to their correct directory 2) Enter AdminCP, click on NNTP Settings once to install/upgrade. Change settings to your like. 3) Click on NNTP Groups once to install/upgrade. 3a) For new install. Run once http://www.yourdomain.com/setlastmsg.php Delete this file afterwards. If you are upgrading from an older version. There is no need to upload this file. Actually this file should not be there except brand new install. 4) Manually run in debug mode: http://forums.yourdomain.com/gateway.php?debug=1 Download Now Only licensed members can download files, Click Here for more information. We've got it working very nicely, but have had to modify the code a bit to get it working right. If anyone wants it, I'll send you the files I have. Currently running on 4.1.9 PL1 without problems at http://forums.novell.com and http://forums.opensuse.org (nntp servers: forums.novell.com and forums.opensuse.org) Email me at kgronemanREMOVE@REMOVEnovell.com (sentient beings will know what to take out of that email address to make it work) We're still playing trying to get the NNTP cancel command to work, but we'll figure it out. Cancel was working but with one of the recent forum upgrades, it stopped so we'll have to find out what changed.

Planning to change Usenet providers. Any recommendation for a good/inexpensive provider that works well with this mod?
Thanks. -- Rik No members have liked this post.

news.tornevall.net is unfortunately down for the moment (I'm working on it) - that service allowed this.

I am using Usenetserver.com and they seem to be pretty responsive. They have a 24x7 online chat, also respond to email.
Thanks to everyone here for contributing, it took me much longer than I would have liked to get things working again. I had used the mod before, had mail servers working, but was struggling with Usenet. My shared hosting provider had blocked port 119, found that they and my news provider were both supporting port 25, then spent many hours trying to find the port references in the php files. I found one in gateway.php, one in nntp.php, and setlastmsp.php. Still couldn't connect and was getting a timeout and it wouldn't connect. Finally overnight, my ISP relented and unblocked port 119. I went to Tornevall's files that he posted on his webpage a couple of years ago (Tack för utstationering på engelska), made one edit to change for my host and it is now connecting and working. I have that nice rush that you briefly have when you finally solve a tough one. It was brief enough, the test post that downloaded was yEnc encoded and looks like gibberish. On to the next challenge. Thanks to everyone for supporting this. I will try to help improve the documentation a little bit. Will try to share my experiences as I encounter the next challenge. No members have liked this post.

Donholloway,
Any chance you could share your changes in total? I'm about to move back to vB and would love to be able to re-install this again with minimal pain ![]() or that applies to anyone - would anyone be willing to share their files with all the edits and changes rather than go through it all again? FYI, Mine was getting an error when there was an apostrophe in the e-mail.
I added
before //Check if the sender is a user which simply strips an apostrophe if present

Also, since I can't get the attachment stuff to work anyway (it's looking for the old functions_images.php vbulletin file) I just disabled attachments all together by commenting out the first call to process_attachments($date, $postid, $threadid, $forumid); in functions_nntp.php
Most of the files posted on newsgroups is junk/viruses anyway.

Awesome notes on the install tpearl5. Thank you! I've yet to fully play with my install, and I'm sure these notes will come in handy.

Also, on another install of this I was getting a mySQL error when running gateway.php. I had to update the query in that matches posts to existing threads to this:
note the p. in front of msgid.

Can anyone here post his working version? There are many great contributors to this Mod but no one has actually posted a patched working version. I wonder why.
Thanks for everyone who has supported this mod that I know of since 2005. Back then I had it on 3.x but I wish I can know if it would work on latest 4.2. Cheers, Hossam No members have liked this post.
