Is there a way where I can set the setting so that when a member logs in, they can only see their own threads and not anyone else's?

I'm kind of new at this also. I think what you may be looking for is located at ;

control panel > Usergroups > Post / Thread Permissions & Forum Viewing Permissions

If you set them up there it may accomplish what you need it to. Hope this helps,
