What Does This Hack Do?

IMPORTANT: The commercial version of the Tab and Link Manager 4 product will only work in Total Replacement Mode with vBulletin 4.2.0 and above. Co-existence Mode and Total Replacement Mode work fine with vBulletin versions 4.0.2 to 4.1.12.

IMPORTANT 2: This hack is feature complete and there will be NO further updates, apart from fixing proven bugs. The reason this hack exists is to showcase/demo the potential of our commercial Tab and Link Manager 4 product and most, if not all, feature requests will already be included in the commercial product.

This is the Lite version of my commercial product - Tab and Link Manager 4. For questions in regards to purchasing the Tab and Link Manager 4 can you please create a new thread in the Pre-sales Questions forum at Wolfshead Solutions instead of posting here. If it is just a comparison of features, then by all means post them in this thread.

This hack gives you an easy way to add custom tabs, links and submenu links to the end of the NavBar. This hack has been stable since I wrote it in November 2009 and does exactly what it says on the tin. The first release of the commercial version was actually based on this version with the addition of the impex feature (which has been removed again before being released here as a Lite version).

This hack will not allow you any control over the already existing default tabs, links and submenu links added by vBulletin (Classic or Publishing Suite) nor any other third-party add-on that adds it's own tabs, links and submenu links.

Tab and Link Manager Lite offers you the following functionality:
  • Installation type: Co-existence Mode - where the default NavBar tabs/links/submenu links run side-by-side with T&LM engine.
  • Add/Edit/Delete a tab.
  • Add/Edit/Delete a link.
  • Add/Edit/Delete a submenu link.
  • Tabs, links and submenu links can be individually controlled by usergroup permissions.
  • Tabs, links or submenu links will not be viewable to users not in an authorised usergroup.
  • You can change the display order for individual tabs, links and submenu links.
The commercial version Tab and Link Manager 4 offers you the following additional functionality not available in Tab and Link Manager Lite:
  • Additional installation type: Total Replacement Mode - where the default NavBar tabs/links/submenu links are totally replaced with the T&LM engine and looks and feels like the original. This requires only 1 template edit and the product does the rest.
  • Ability to toggle on/off the Home & Blog default vBulletin tabs (only in Total Replacement Mode).
  • Ability to toggle on/off the Forum & What's New default vBulletin tabs (only in Total Replacement Mode & importing a xml definition file into the Tab and Link Manager 4 database via impex).
  • Ability to toggle on/off the Global Search Box (only in Total Replacement Mode).
  • Ability to toggle on/off the Projects tab.
  • Four new Tab types:
    • Dropdown - tabs can now be dropdown menus themselves
    • URL Matching - to allow for more than one tab to point to the same file, bypassing the THIS_SCRIPT limitations caused by the default NavBar
    • vBCMS - specifically to create vBCMS tabs using nodeids
    • Forum - specifically to create forum tabs using forumids
  • Tab, Link and SubMenu Link images (only with tabs, links and submenu links created using this product).
  • Different tabs, link and submenu link images for each style (if you so choose).
  • Tabs can be positioned in three different locations on the NavBar (only with tabs created using this product).
  • Tabs, Links and submenu links can be targeted on how it is to be opened in a web browser.
  • Tabs, links and submenu links can be either text or they can be a phrase (allowing for different text when another language is selected).
  • Tabs, links and submenu links can be local or external urls.
  • Script conditionals; allows for more control over each Tab, Link and SubMenu link, using conditional statements such as $show['searchbuttons'] && $show['member'].
  • Multiple THIS_SCRIPT names: allows multiple locations to highlight a single tab (Normal tabs).
  • Multiple relative/full urls: allows different content from a single file (such as vBCMS) to highlight several tabs correctly (URL_Matching tabs).
  • For viewers that have cookies disabled, all Tabs, Links and SubMenu links have the session hash correctly added to it.
  • For W3C standards purists the (x)html link target attribute has been replaced for Tabs, Links and SubMenu links with the standards compliant rel attribute (via custom javascript) which emulates the target attribute and allows all xhtml generated by Tab and Link Manager 4 itself to 100% validate with W3C.
  • You can also add rel="nofollow" to your tabs, links and submenu links.
  • You can export your Tab and Link Manager Lite database to a compatible xml definition file (all tabs, links and submenu links) ready to import into Tab and Link Manager 4.
  • You can export your Tab Add System (sstab advanced) database to a compatible xml definition file (all tabs and links) ready to import into Tab and Link Manager 4.
  • You can export your Tab and Link Manager 4 database to an xml definition file (all tabs, links and submenu links).
  • You can import your saved Tab and Link Manager 4 xml definition file(s) into this product (all tabs, links and submenu links).
For a feature comparison matrix comparing Tab and Link Manager with the two most popular Tab hacks here at vBulletin.org, click here.

Tab and Link Manager 4 is now 100% compatible with all Bluepearl Skins's vBulletin 4 styles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question:
It doesn't work! Help!!!
Answer:
That does not help me help you. Please explain exactly what the issue is, give as much information as possible and ensure you have clicked Mark as Installed as I only support people who have.
Question:
I have vBulletin 4.2.0 (or above) installed, will the new Navigation Manager included in vBulletin work with Tab and Link Manager Lite?
Answer:
The short answer is no it will not, as the Navigation Manager replicates the functions in Tab and Link Manager Lite in its entirety and you may as well use the Navigation Manager instead of this hack.

Navigation Manger is not included with vBulletin 4.1.12 (and lower), so you are fine using this hack.

Tab and Link Manager 4 (Commercial version) is an entirely different case; there is a lot of functionality missing in Navigation Manger which is included with Tab and Link Manager 4 and will work entirely fine in vBulletin 4.2.0 (and above) when it replaces Navigation Manager altogether (as they do not play well with each other).
Question:
"My tabs do not highlight".... "my links or submenu links do not show up".... "when I click on a link or submenu link my tab does not stay highlighted, but highlights another tab" Help!!!!
Answer:
Information as to why any of the above are probably happening is laid out in the following post here.
Question:
I have Tab Add System (sstab advanced) or Tab and Link Manager Lite installed and want to keep my tabs and links if I purchase the Tab and Link Manager, can I do that?
Answer:
Yes, you can. There are database exporters for both Tab Add System (sstab advanced) and Tab and Link Manager Lite hacks. You would run the correct database exporter before un-installing that hack, which creates a Tab and Link Manager 4 compatible xml definition file that can then be imported into Tab and Link Manager (once it is installed).
Question:
Can you add a feature/functionality to this hack (disable/remove default tabs, add drop-down tabs etc,.)?
Answer:
I will not be adding additional functionality to this Lite version. These features are most likely already included in my commercial product Tab and Link Manager 4.
Question:
I don't like the copyright branding at the bottom of every page generated by hack, what can I do?
Answer:
Please read the Branding section below, which talks about the branding-free option and is the only option if you want to use this hack without copyright branding. The alternative to that is to uninstall the hack and not using it at all.

vBulletin Version Compatibility

This hack (Lite version) can be used with vBulletin versions 4.0.0 - 4.1.12.

For vBulletin versions 4.2.0 and above, you should use vBulletin's integrated Navigation Manager instead of this Lite version (see the FAQ section above in regards the commercial version).

This product will NOT work with 3.8.x and earlier as the new NavBar was not introduced until 4.0.0.

Hack Support

IMPORTANT: This hack is no longer supported.

Branding

There is a small unobtrusive block of copyright branding text at the bottom of each page generated by this hack, which is there to promote my work and allow you to use this hack for free.

You are NOT allowed to remove my copyright branding from this hack.

If you wish to remove the visible copyright branding from this hack, then you can do so by purchasing a life-time multi-site Tab and Link Manager Lite - Branding Free Subscription at Wolfshead Solutions.

Removal of the copyright branding without purchase of a branding-free license will be considered as a breach of copyright, and I will take the matter further.

Install/Upgrade/Uninstall Instructions

The readme_tab_and_link_manager_lite.html instructions file is included in attached .zip file. You will need to open this file in a web browser.

Thanks - installed this - with 2 links under the tab - however they (the links) don't appear to display when I hover over the tab - if I click on the tab it launches the URL I have on the tab.

Same problem here, unfortunately payed support for a free mod is a turn off for me so I will use it only for tabs. I have a vague feelind you need to pay support to use this free mode properly... ...
Maybe someone can figure it out and post it here.

With this one only tabs works, the rest of menus and submenus does not work for me.
And I am not paying 40 USD for having some simple menus in forum.
There are mods 10 times more complicated and for free ... sorry wolfs.
I am using this one only for tabs, but this should be in vb included ...

Thanks, I see the link works, I managed to get that with another mod. What I'd like though is it to have it's own submenu that highlights the right link when on the page it links to.

Hi,
This is great.
One thing: I have lot's of usergroups, and I had to select all to allow tab for them !
Is there an easier way to (select all) ?
Thanks,,

The pictures show how to create separate tabs, links and submenus.

My question: Is there a place where you can associate tabs with specific links and submenus, as there is no photo showing that?

Simple, if i create TAB 1, and want to display only LINK 2 and SUBMENU 3, not others?

Sub-menu links are associated (linked) with one Link, and Links are associated (linked) with one Tab, not the other way around, so you can not create one Link and associate it with more than one Tab at the same time, same goes for Sub-menu links, they can only be associated than one Link at a time.

There is nothing wrong with this hack at all, it is how you are utilising it on your site.... there is nothing to fix, this hack has worked bug-free for more than a year (no actual bug or error messages have ever been posted here, and that is since I released it here in July 2010).
