Best to get you info direct from the source.

But if you buy a vBulletin 4.x license you will never have to pay for a renewal for as long as you want to use VB 4.x. You will have access to every VB 4.x version, 4.0. 4.1, 4.2, ... all the way to 4.9.9 if they make it.

At some point VB 5.x will be released, that is when you'll have to pay again if you want access to VB 5.x but no one knows when or how much that may be.

It would be sometime before I ever upgrade to v5 - even after it comes out.
There are a few factors that will be into play, so I will sit back, once it comes out
see what other people are doing, then I will watch them complain about v5
being worse then v4, then v4 being worse then v3, and so on. If I have learned
anything in life, do not run out and just upgrade once a major version comes out.
I do not even upgrade right away even when minor versions are released, once
a version comes out, it may take me between 1-3 months to upgrade, for good reason....
