I released this one already on vB3.5.0 beta but I now made it a little better.
In the 1st you got a 'new thread' button only on top.
It now also displays on on the bottom of the thread.

The 3.5.0 template mod was quiet popular (60 installs) so
hopefully many people enjoy this one aswel :)

Preview shows enough!

How would I make this button not appear if the forum is closed?

Go to yourdomain.TLD/admincp/template.php?do=modify find the templated called SHOWTHREAD (CaSeSeNsItIvE).

In the SHOWTHREAD find:
<!-- controls above postbits -->

Replace the entire table section whit:

<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0" width="100%" style="margin-bottom:3px">
<tr valign="bottom">
<td class="smallfont"><a href="newthread.php?$session[sessionurl]do=newthread&amp;f=$forumid" rel="nofollow"><img src="$stylevar[imgdir_button]/newthread.gif" alt="$vbphrase[post_new_thread]" border="0" /></a>&nbsp;
<if condition="$show['largereplybutton']"><a href="newreply.php?$session[sessionurl]do=newreply&amp;noquote=1&amp;p=$FIRSTPOSTID" rel="nofollow"><if condition="$show['closethread']"><img src="$stylevar[imgdir_button]/reply.gif" alt="$vbphrase[reply]" border="0" /><else /><img src="$stylevar[imgdir_button]/threadclosed.gif" alt="$vbphrase[closed_thread]" border="0" /></if></a></td>
<else />
<td class="smallfont">&nbsp;</td>
</if>
<if condition="$show['pagenav']"><td align="$stylevar[right]">$pagenav</td></if>
</tr>
</table>

In the SHOWTHREAD find:
<!-- controls below postbits -->

Replace the lines to the first /else: (about three or four lines)
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0" width="100%">
<tr valign="top">
<td class="smallfont"><a href="newthread.php?$session[sessionurl]do=newthread&amp;f=$forumid" rel="nofollow"><img src="$stylevar[imgdir_button]/newthread.gif" alt="$vbphrase[post_new_thread]" border="0" /></a>&nbsp;
<if condition="$show['largereplybutton']"><a href="newreply.php?$session[sessionurl]do=newreply&amp;noquote=1&amp;p=$LASTPOSTID" rel="nofollow"><if condition="$show['closethread']"><img src="$stylevar[imgdir_button]/reply.gif" alt="$vbphrase[reply]" border="0" /><else /><img src="$stylevar[imgdir_button]/threadclosed.gif" alt="$vbphrase[closed_thread]" border="0" /></if></a></td>
<else />

Remember to note the table preferances at your style template and fit them into this script.

Thanks for this. A lot of my members where asking for it. Is there anyway to write this so if the thread is closed the only thing that shows up is the closed gif? The above replacement still shows the newthread.gif.

Thanks,
Parker

thanks, works great.

how can I show the new thread button on the right side?

then the reply button would be left, and the new thread button on the right side.

thank you!

This line should be moved one position (One line down):

<td class="smallfont"><a href="newthread.php?$session[sessionurl]do=newthread&amp;f=$forumid" rel="nofollow"><img src="$stylevar[imgdir_button]/newthread.gif" alt="$vbphrase[post_new_thread]" border="0" /></a>&nbsp;
