Am just trying this out on a test server (where I'm playing with the 3.6 beta)

Haven't decided on all the content - was thinking of adsense or maybe links to products at amazon, and then links to related sites. Can't really decide on content yet, but figured it would be good to have this kind of area.

I also think I'd have this on one style but not another, just giving users choice

What I was wondering, (because I get scared changing code ) ;)
was does this work if I want three or four contents

Is it just a case of adding another bit of code like this,
<tr>
<td class="alt1">
Column Content 2
</td>
</tr>

Also I was wondering if I could get a space between say content 1 and 2 so it apears like a box with content, some white space a box with more content.

Should I press install? its only a test page server right now so not sure.

Thanks very much, this was so easy to install and so offers me extra options for my site, and providing it works with the 3.6 gold I'll definitely use it :)

yes you just need to use the code you have added to put another row in the box.

to add a break between to areas, use

</table>
<br />
<table class="tborder" border="0" width="100%" align="center">

ensure that your template starts with <tr> and ends with </tr> otherwise it will not work.

Just back as I wanted to say thanks, because this is pretty awesome.

Wanted separation between some of the side bar content, so changed the code as suggested, right now it a short box of content and then a longer box of content, this fits pretty well and is totally what I wanted to achieve. This is only on my test server right now but definitely going to install it live once 3.6 is gold. <wanders off to find the install button>

Thanks again!!

You can include this on any page in vB by adding the first section of code after $navbarin the template and the second section before$footer

The right side one is already released.

how can i put a bullet next to a link ?

example

thank you

peterska2
30 Jun 2006, 14:21
For that particular type of bullet, you would need to use<ul><li>link/text/whatever here</li></ul>Use<br />between each item and omit the</ul>until the final item so your list would look like<ul>
<li>Item One</li><br />
<li>Item Two</li><br />
<li>Item Three</li>
</ul>You can put as many items as you wish within the list using this format.

Peter,

Sorry to trouble you with a simple style question, but what's the best way to center the items inside the 'bar'? I could edit the <TD> and place alignment paramaters; or set up a class in the css, or inline; or the frightfull <CENTER> tags nested in each cell. I'm not sure. Thanks for considering to answer me.

I'd use<td align="center">myself as that is what is used everywhere else in vB and still allows you to use standard classes for the contents too.

I've got exams this afternoon (going out to school shortly), so either tonight or tomorrow I'm looking at the shoutbox issues.

With regards to the sidebar on all pages, I'm not sure if amykhar is porting it, but I believe her 3.5.x version works on 3.6.x

Please let me know if you will be using that one instead, as I don't need to look at the shoutbox as priority if you are not using it. Thanks.

How do you modify it to display on ALL pages except vbadvanced homepage?

This is only designed for showing on forumhome, however, if you make the first template edit in the bottom of the header template, and the second one at the start of the footer template then it will show on all pages.

To stop it showing on vbadvanced, put<if condition="THIS_SCRIPT!='cmps_index'">before the template edits and</if>after them. You will need to do this to both template edits.

peterska2

It's because you are using a fixed width template. Depending on how they are set, it does not work.

For best results, this should be used with a fluid width style.

Criticize
03 Aug 2006, 21:31
I have seen a lot of other sites use a modification like this on a fixed width, are you saying there is no way for this to be done?

peterska2
03 Aug 2006, 22:43
It depends on how your style is set up. As your style is very graphical (category strips, navbar etc) then it won't work as those images are generally fixed sizes leading to the problem that you are experiencing.

I've installed it on sites that are fixed widths, but they just use CSS or gradients for the category strips and not full images, this is where the problem lies as you cannot fit the column, the spacer, and the category strip images in the same space as just the category strip images.

Basically it all comes down to the set up of your style. My modifications are written on a default style unless stated otherwise (it might be a color variation, but thats it) and while I offer assistance with other styles, I cannot possibly make it work on every single style due to the sheer amount of variables involved.

JollyJack
04 Aug 2006, 22:51
How do you get the header of this column to be the same as the style?

peterska2
04 Aug 2006, 22:57
it should be by default as that is how I coded it.

If you want it to be the same as the category strips rather than the table header, replace thead in the template with tcat

peterska2
07 Aug 2006, 13:29
you can just add CSS when you are adding your content, but it does use the same classes as the rest of your forums, so will by design use the same setup as them.

peterska2

peterska2

Add the links to the template via your style manager.

The only thing that the XML is for is to install the default template and the plugins required for it to work.

Ohiosweetheart

15 Aug 2006, 17:26
As I don't use either of them modifications, I can only guess at this, so it might work, or it might not.

Try putting the variables for those in the column template. If they are global variables then they _should_ work.

Let me know what happens, as if not I'll probably need some more information about how these modifications work (the variables and things, not what they actually do) to see what sort of solution I can come up with.

StuntFactoryX
15 Aug 2006, 17:38
http://www.stuntfactoryx.com/forum/ is my site to give you an idea. they are the photoblocks under my shoutbox.

it was a plugin i imported w/ content in in plugin of

include('../photopost/inc_features.php');

hook location is forumhome_complete

im not sure if that what your asking or is enough info.. if this is possible would i delete everything out of your template and just put the variables in there alone?

peterska2

Ok, moving the variable to the template and then moving the plugin to global_complete should work. No guarentees though as I can't test first.

You should visit WC3 validate after installing this on the FORUMHOME. Becuase you end up with about 9 errors just from the code on the HOMEPAGE entered. Some tags are not right or missing etc. Yet the forumhome page validates 100% before you install this. Would be a nice if the validation could be sorted out as it's a very useful hack.

Does anybody know how you can get this to work right with a fixed width style. using the default vB theme. The navbar and footer always go out of alignment.

What width are you using Gary? I'll check it out for you.

MRGTB

Well I wanted to use a fixed width of about 860 pixels to leave enough room for a side bar thats about 170 pixels wide . I will just install this on that fixed width new template I'll add for testing, then show you the problems via a link in a minute.

Sorry i was wrong, this does work fine. My mistake!

Checkout the fixed width style here for the time being, as I will be turning my default style over to this soon from fluid, then removing the other test template.

very nice work Kerry.

Yeah good work, I had some other code I put together that was valid W3C and CSS for the Side Block Code itself. It must have been the <div> code in it that was messing up the side column though on the header and navbar on a "fixed" template width. Were as your updated code solved the problem. So I finshed up using your Left Side Block code to control it all and add the Left Side Block itself, then added my own custom blocks to your code that have that uses collasible blocks etc.

I was messing around for days trying to figure that problem out. Your code fixed it now, thanks! ;)

How come the sidebar box and the top of the forums not line up? The sidebar is a line or two higher. Is there any way to fix this?

peterska2
08 Sep 2006, 23:43
Thats linked with your style. In your forumhome template find<table class="tborder" border="0" cellpadding="$stylevar[cellpadding]" cellspacing="$stylevar[cellspacing]" width="100%" align="center">
$forumhome_sidecolumn_leftand add<br />above it. You may need to add two or three to get it aligned correctly.

It depends on which approach you want to take, but I have written a couple of mods that do this.

Unfortunately not as they have not been released here. That doesn't mean that they won't be in the future, but at the moment they aren't.

Sorry Zia, I don't quite get you. :(

Do you mean that you want to have the quick register in the column?

Or are you making a request for a different quick register modification?

WoodiE

This is due to the fact that those variables only work in the actual forumhome template. I have wrote a fix for this, but have not yet performed enough tests on it to deem it to be stable for release.

Feel free to contact me if you wish to volunteer for testing this for me.

Is there an ETA for this fix to be released?

I also be willing to help test if need be.

It already has been released. Notification was sent to those who had clicked install.

[edit] ooops, I was thinking of the wrong update.

This modification for the whats going on in the side column has been written a few weeks but it has not been released here and there are no current plans to do so.

I have a question..

I'm thinking of making an "affiliates" block that will show the little 88 x 130 banners,, is there a way to make a block with a scrolling column of banners ?

I think I know how to do it, but I want it to be a fixed height..

any idea ? thanks

Why not release it?

You can actually use the plugin from this modification (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=95493&highlight=header) to get the desired effect.

The version I had created is not too easy to install, which is one of the reasons why.

Please also note that there are, and always will be, modifications that I don't release here for one reason or another and that this is my personal choice. The reasons for this are my own, and no further discussion of this will take place.

No worries, thus the reason I decided to stop looking around here and asking for a plugin/mod when it one already exists with no questions asked on vbHackers.com :cool:

Ok, I am new at this, Call me dumby but, How do you edit this. I have it installed and It is thier but how do you add cat. to it? I seen in an earlier thread it was answered but I think the way it was answered you would have to be a coder or been doing this a while to figure it out.

For some reason I cannot add the following code, it doesn't work.

Stuff to display the following:

When I put the code in the postbit for it, it just doesn't display it. However if I try it on the forum home, it does display it. Is there something wrong with the plugin not using variables or such?

Is there another way I can do this? Thanks.

See post #112 for a solution for this.

As previously mentioned I have written an extensive template modification for the whats going on box to display in the column but I have not released it here.

Does anyone have a template for the code so those of us who are not coders can reference to setup the side bar? Something more extensive than that described in this post (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showpost.php?p=1041020&postcount=44), such as a template that'll detail how to add adsense code, links, etc?

Thanks so much! Sorry for being a noob at this :)

You will need a basic knowledge of html to add your links and content to the side bar. The code provided in the template is a sample and can be modified in that format to add as many items as required.

I put the top side column code underneath the $header instead of $navbar, and it fixed the stretching problem, but I still can't get it aligned with the top....did I put a typo in there or something? I copied it exactly how it's suppose to. Would any of my other hacks have anything to do with it? Like my header scrolling marquee? Or my statistics I have up top?

Any help would be appreciated, BTW you can stop by the site and see it for yourself...maybe that would help I don't know...

Kerry-Anne... is there a newer side column hack that puts the column on every page? Can this one be placed on every page?

Or is the one by Amykhar the latest and only one?

</body>
</html>

That code is spot on. The only thing I can think of is that it is another modification affacting it. I've just been over to your site and it appears that you have removed it, so I am unable to see for myself what is happening.

Kerry-Anne... is there a newer side column hack that puts the column on every page? Can this one be placed on every page?

Or is the one by Amykhar the latest and only one?

The one by Amy works on 3.5.x and 3.6.x

I have no plans to release anything else that will do that.

Why is that? I'm not sure what's causing it as the same code on forumhome and forumdisplay has no issues.

So, I solved the SHOWTHREAD problem. I'm just amazing like that. It took me a couple hours to track down all the right variables and templates, too.

Create a new template called 'spacer_open_showthread' with the following content:<!-- open content container -->
<if condition="$show['old_explorer']">
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0" width="540" align="center"><tr><td class="page" style="padding:0px $stylevar[spacersize]px 0px $stylevar[spacersize]px">
<else />
<div align="center">
<div class="page" style="width:540px; text-align:$stylevar[left]">
<div style="padding:0px $stylevar[spacersize]px 0px $stylevar[spacersize]px">
</if>…replacing both instances of 540 with your desired width of the postbits

Add the following line in showthread.php: 'spacer_open_showthread',below 'editor_jsoptions_size',
Change all instances of $spacer_open to $spacer_open_showthread in templates postbit_wrapper, SHOWTHREAD and showthread_list

Add the appropriate column code to SHOWTHREAD
Tada! For a live example, please see http://www.volconvo.com/forums/

Enjoy :)

it's probably because of the amount of things in your navbar. Try removing some or adding another row to it and that should help solve the problem.

looks to me to be that you have too many </table> tags in there especially when there is a memeber logged in. It is displaying fine in FF1.5.x as a guest.

Check your forum icons and member logout section against a default style as this section does appear to be wrong but I'm not logged into my ACP at the moment to check it out for the exact code change that is required.

First, thank you for this hack. I love it! :)

Second, is there a way I can make more space within the cells in the tables that follow the first one (did that make sense)? Click on the link and you'll see what I mean. The first table looks fine but the others' cells don't look right. I'd like all of them to look like the first table.

yes you just need to use the code you have added to put another row in the box.

to add a break between to areas, use

Well, I'm back for another go at it.

I want it to look like this:

https://www.vbulletin.org/forum/external/2006/12/3.jpg

But it looks like this:

https://www.vbulletin.org/forum/external/2006/12/4.jpg

And goes completely off the right side of the forum. How can I change the template code to make it fit the screen like on the screenshot above for 3800pro.com?

Here's my whole entire template:

It's more than likely to do with your random images from your gallery. Try adjusting the settings for that and it should fix it.

Ok, I just installed this, but for the purposes I need and without reading over 10+ pages... please give me the break down.

Is there a way to take the Column Header box off of that left side altogether. I run a forum for college football discussion and want to just use this space for the 11 different banners of the major conferences. No more no less, thats the only thing I want this space for.

Also, I have a shoutbox that extends all the way to the left, BUT, the "Whats Going On" Category at the bottom does not. Is there a way to stretch this so it kinda cloes the top and bottom of that left side gap.

Removing the header from the column is done in the forumhome_sidebar_left template. Just remove the row labelled heading.

To get the whats going on box to be full width, use the other set of instructions for the template edits.

I don't get you at all there.

Sorry that i explained unclear ...

i use Default VB style And i want to have a left Side Column . i saw in the screenshot that u posted that the left side column which u created had made a space ( as big as the left side column ) in the whole page ( all sections ) ,

But What i Want is that : the column comes just next to first section ( Main Category ) and does not disturb the other sections , i hope i'm clear now .

Thanks in Advance

Edit the first edit in the forumhome template to change the 160px to anything that you want.

This will happen if the content is too wide. Try shortening the content of this box or increasing the width of the column

Depends on what method you want to use. You could integrate a stats mod which includes this into your column, or you could use RSS Feeds display, or any of a number of different methods. I suggest posting a modification request.

Ok first off I just want to say I read every post here and the support you provide is not to be over looked. I really am impressed the patience you have. ;)

Ok awesome MOD however I am have two problems:

One being the column does not have a very distinct green bar that the rest of the forum shares.

Second even using the <br /> tag I ended up with the column and fourms offset. It helped, however did not fully fix the issue.

Paleeez lend me your wisdom to correct these problems and I will be your forever friend:p

oNeg

*pic included shows both problems and is displayed with the <br /> tag included, w/o it, it resembles the previous pic discussing this problem.

peterska2
09 Jan 2007, 07:17
The green bar can be fixed by changing the thead to tcat in the top row of the forumhome_sidecolumn_left template.

I'll need to see your actual forums to see why it's not aligning correctly for you, so please can you post the URL.

Thanks.

oNeg

Thanks :)

And now for the answer :D

In your forumhome template, you have <div class="spacer"></div>right after the edit that you applied to start your column. Remove it, and instead locate it immediately before the template edit instead. You will then align perfectly again. You may need to remove the <br /> from the side column template.

Hi,

How do I add a link to another page in the column? This isnt working:

Don't use $vbphrase[google] as this isn't in the phrases used by vBulletin, but instead just use Google

Kadi
18 Jan 2007, 10:36
Thanks.

I was told to use it to translate words/phrases in a post in vb.com. (Then I add it to global phrases to translate)

Is there a different way now? How would I translate? Or should I ask in vb.com?

peterska2

If you have created a global phrase for it, then thats fine, but otherwise just use the text.

Another question. I have my columns setup. The top 4 are different widths than the bottom one. Before I upgraded they all stayed the same width no matter what. The thing is it only does this in IE FF shows them correct.

This will happen if the content is too wide. Try shortening the content of this box or increasing the width of the column

I'm having a similar problem.
I have 3 boxes and one is wider than the others in IE. They are all the same as each other in FF.

Is there any way to make all 3 boxes the same width regardless of content?

It looks great in FF but a mess in IE.
Thanks

I'm sure it's been asked in here but I can't find it.

How does one go about getting the side column to go all the way down the forum, alongsiide the what's going on box? I've installed this, as you can see by my forumhome code below, but the What's Going On box is stretched all the way across. How can I fix this?

Here's my code:

This is only designed for showing on forumhome, however, if you make the first template edit in the bottom of the header template, and the second one at the start of the footer template then it will show on all pages.

To stop it showing on vbadvanced, put<if condition="THIS_SCRIPT!='cmps_index'">before the template edits and</if>after them. You will need to do this to both template edits.
Hi, thanks for your mod - good work.

I tried the above edits, but the left column still appears on my CMPS home page. I haven't renamed 'cmps_index' or anything, so I'm not sure why it's not working. Is there anything else I can do or change to fix this? Thanks.

I added some google adsense under the code for the various links in the side column. However, the ad's above over the column instead of under it.

Is there a way to make it so that the "what's going on" box still spans the whole width of the forum though?

Because as it is right now, I believe this will push that box over, wether or not the column extends all the way down or not.

Are folks using this for advertisers? Has anyone modded this to include it on every page?

Chris

josh_B
02 Mar 2007, 19:20
You can use it to advertise with google adsense etc.. I am having issues with it though.
I have installed a nice new navigation menu with pretty icons etc.. However when I add the google adsense code (Similar to the code above) It puts it above the nav menu..
I cant see why its doing it either. Damn thing!

Worked the above issue out now!

Just to add if anyone had/has the same issue. If you put around the adsense code, it moves it to the bottom of the navigation part. I dont know how to code, I just looked at other codes and worked it out :)

May I say , fantastic little install Kerry-Anne.

No it's not on the TBD forum, it's on this one www.spapt.com (http://www.spapt.com). It's not open for registration yet.

i cant see why from the code you gave. maybe something to do with your footer, try removing the code and disabling the product and see if your footer corrects itself to where it should be. let me know hpw you get on

I did that several times, and it does. As soon as I remove the code, it goes back into place, and as soon as I put the code back, it moves to the right. I don't think it's this hack tho.

I uninstalled this one and installed another side column hack and it does the same thing. So odd. :erm:

I don't know anything about coding - I've installed this add-on, but don't know how to add actual LINKS into the column. Right now my forumhome_sidecolumn_left looks like this:

<tr>
<td class="thead">
NEW!
</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="alt1">
ONLINE CHAT
</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="alt2">
IceDogFANS.com
</td>
</tr>

And I'd like to have the "IceDogFANS.com" go to http://www.icedogfans.com (obviously)
and I'd like to have the "ONLINE CHAT" be linked to: http://forum.icedogfans.com/misc.php?do=flashchat

What lines do I need to edit and what tags need to be wrapped around those links?

Sorry for the very basic question....

Nevermind! I think I've got it....

<tr>
<td class="thead">
NEW!
</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="alt1">
<a href="http://forum.icedogfans.com/misc.php?do=flashchat">ONLINE CHAT!</a>
</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="alt2">
<a href="http://www.icedogfans.com">IceDogFANS.com</a>
</td>
</tr>

**Installed**

And working fine on 3.6.7.
Took me a little while to figure out how to actually get info into the boxes, but all's good now.
Thanks.
