is there a similar script for doing the same with with the actual forums?

Seems like most of the hard work is done, would be nifty to be able to space economise with the actual forums on forumhome in the same way.

Thanks - great to have this mod with no manual template changes needed.

Any chance of an option to remove the $vbphrase[subforums]: :)

Valter
09 Aug 2006, 09:31
It can be done by editing few templates.

But it's good idea to make it automatical ;)

Next version will include option "Hide 'subforum' phrase".

Cybernetec,

This hack is great, but I see one problem.

When I chose numbers of colmns, for example 4, if I have 6 items to show, second row has only two (6-4=2) td tags and layout on IE acts weird. If you could add the rest cells filled with  , your hack will be perfect.

is there a way to set the subforum options differently on different forums? like if there is a parent forum on my main page I'd like to not show it's subforums, but then there is another that I would like to show the subforum

and also, is there a way to change the settings for columns independently instead of only overall?

Thank you!

This is a great hack. Cleaned up my ever-growing forum nicely.

I'd like to suggest an addition to this hack that I think would be nice. Allow the number of threads to be visible next to each sub forum.

rather than:
sub-forum A
sub-forum B

have:
sub-forum A (45)
sub-forum B (37)

I tried v1.8. The new features works but it increased the vertical space between the subforums in a column even with the thread and reply count off which it did not do in the previous version.

johnstires
06 Sep 2006, 18:20
Wow, thanks for including my suggestion! However the upgrade isn't working properly. The only setting that works is the "Custom attributes - Enable" setting. Everything else is unresponsive. I can't change table rows, enable thread #s, etc. (edit) Never mind, it works. I just realized that the color you chose for the thread/replies is very very close to my background color. It was just hidden.

06 Sep 2006, 18:53
Installed the update, and it works very well, other then number of columns doesn't seem to work if you choose 2. If I choose 1, I get 1, if I choose 2, I get 1, and if I choose 3, I get 3. So something doesn't appear to be correct with the columns = 2.

Hi Cybernetec, could you please add an option to this:
"-Added: Options to show thread-count or reply-count or both after sub-forum title"

Its fine if a subforum is a real forum but if a subforum is a link the (0/0) looks really strange :D

This should be off by default for link forums!

Thats exact what I wanted to say. Tha would be great, I have a lot of Links, but many more Subforums. ;)

And I found a Bug.

If I enter some Forum in Exclude, this Subforums were not shown in Columns, but also the extra Style is used and the Thread/Post Count is also shown up.

I know this says for forum home, but on forumdisplay it arranges them in subcolumns as well. However, on forumdisplay it bunches them more closely together even though there is room for the subforums to be listed more organized (like on forumhome)

How can I get the spacing on forumdisplay to be like the spacing on forumhome?

*edit*
I found out that on forumdisplay its contingent upon the length of the forum description.

Hi Cybernetec,

Thanks for an excellent hack. This was by far the best hack I've installed out of the 73 I currently have! Keep up the good work!

I do have one slight problem, though. If you look at my test forums, http://test2.prophecy.co.za, you'll see that there is this weird line break after the first subforum, if I have the settings set to use more than one column. On the settings set to use only one column, all the subforums has line breaks after them, which I think is also wrong, looking at your live demo.

I also attach a screenshot of the line break in 3 column mode, as well as single column mode.

On www.bihforum.com the last x active threads of a main forum are shown instead of only the last one.

Is this made with another product ? I mean for example "Zadnjih 10 osvježenih tema:" on www.bihforum.com what probably means the 10 most recent topics in a forum.

Yes, it's another modification (not released here). It means 10 latest updated threads.

I would release it but it's little tricky to set it up. For every forum with sub-forums I've created separate product where you set target forum (where last x threads will be shown instead of last post info) and subforums IDs from where latest threads are listed.

Any idea about this, some of the names of forums are long, so I put in &nbsp to keep the names together, but then when it's displayed, it puts the word after the &nbsp; in the next cell.

See, here's United States, the first with no &nbsp; in it and the 2nd with &nbsp in it. Any ideas?

hey klaymen I had the same problem. I fixed it by making the forum name longer (I just added a bunch of nonbreaking spaces, &nbsp;, to make the forum name long and then it extends the subforums accordingly.)

Installed on 3.6.4 and working great awesome hack and great support

I have tried to set the colums to 2 and used the &nbsp;

This works, BUT

It also adds a trailing _____ for each space indicitive of the underline :confused:

Any way to get ride of this?

I haven't planned to do any function upgrades in the near future because I'm very busy. Atm I'm only ready to fix bugs if any of them are found in my hacks.

And if I do something I don't need anyone to pay for it here. Just mark hacks as installed and you'll be informed by e-mail when new versions are released.

I think you had to go to :
-Vbulletin Options
-Forums listing display options
-And the setting for that should be:
+Depth of Forums - Forum Home = 2
+Depth of Forums - Forum Display = 2
+Depth of Sub-Forums = 2

As I see your sreen shot ..your depth of sub-forums is 1 ...you should change it to 2 ...then it's should work fine .

Check all that options ...It's may fix your problem .

v1.8 - Sep 06. 2006.
-Added: Option to exclude forumsWhat exactly does this feature do? My understanding is that it should exclude forums/subforums from being listed entirely. Although it doesn't seem to do this at all. I tried listing the subforum, the parent forum, and tried also parent category. None of these had any noticable effect.

Either this is a bug or a feature that pertains to something else. In any case, if there a way to hide subforums from being listed from specific forums?

Edit: Now I think I understand what the Exclude function does. Although Is there a way to completely hide subforums from being listed on forumhome?

Edit 2: Found a small work-around for what I need Basically I went into the forumhome_forumbit_level2_post template and found this code:

<if condition="$show['subforums']"><div class="smallfont" style="margin-top:$stylevar[cellpadding]px"><strong>$vbphrase[subforums]</strong>: $forum[subforums]</div></if>
and replaced it with this code:
<if condition="($forum[forumid] == 1 OR $forum[forumid] == 2)"><else />
<if condition="$show['subforums']"><div class="smallfont" style="margin-top:$stylevar[cellpadding]px"><strong>$vbphrase[subforums]</strong>: $forum[subforums]</div></if>
</if>

Where as 1 and 2 are the two forumids I don't want to have the subforums appear under.

For those wanting it in forumdisplay.. Just change the "Depth of Forums - Forum Display" option to 1.

However, This doesn't quite display correctly if you have "Act as a Forum" set to "No" for the subforum when you have:

Parent Forum -> Child Forum -> Subforum (that only acts as a category) -> More Subforums -> Threads.

If you have a setup like this, adding the $forumid to "Exclude Forum" in the Subforum Manager doesn't work either... and I'm not sure why.

I included an image of how it doesn't display correctly. 61912
Notice that it uses the "tcat" class, and also has the collapse button which is not needed since nothing will be displaying under it.

Fixing these few things is simple:

Open forumhome_forumbit_level1_nopost and find:<tbody>
<tr>
<td class="tcat" colspan="<if condition="$vboptions[showmoderatorcolumn]">6<else />5</if>">Replace with:<tbody>
<tr>
<td class="<if condition="!in_array($forumid, array(X,Y,Z))">tcat<else />alt1</if>" colspan="<if condition="$vboptions[showmoderatorcolumn]">6<else />5</if>">Where X, Y, and Z are the $forumid's of the subforums that are Category Only and displaying incorrectly.

Now for getting rid of the collapse button.

In the same template find:<a style="float:$stylevar[right]" href="#top" onclick="return toggle_collapse('forumbit_$forumid')"><img id="collapseimg_forumbit_$forumid" src="$stylevar[imgdir_button]/collapse_tcat{$collapseimg_forumid}.gif" alt="" border="0" /></a>and replace with:<if condition="!in_array($forumid, array(X,Y,Z))"><a style="float:$stylevar[right]" href="#top" onclick="return toggle_collapse('forumbit_$forumid')"><img id="collapseimg_forumbit_$forumid" src="$stylevar[imgdir_button]/collapse_tcat{$collapseimg_forumid}.gif" alt="" border="0" /></a></if> again where X,Y,Z are the $forumid's that aren't displaying correctly. Note: If you ever change your Forumdisplay depth back to 2, you should delete this conditional, or you won't be able to collapse/expand your Subforums.

It should now look like this:61913

Not done yet! If you want to fix that column spacing, add the $forumid of that subforum to the "Forum Exclude" in the Subforum Manager. The columns will now space the same as Subforum (Act as forum) in the attached pictures.

I haven't tested this thoroughly, but I haven't had problems either.

If it's not working, make sure the $forumid's you are using are the actual $forumid's of the subforum.. i.e. "Test Subforum (Category Only)" in the images.

------------------------------------------
Also, if ALL of the subforums you have are "Category Only" you may want to get rid of the table with the Forum, Last Post, Threads, and Posts for that forum, since it won't display post counts, etc.

To do this go to forumdisplay.

Find:<thead>
<tr align="center">
<td class="thead">&nbsp;</td>
<td class="thead" width="100%" align="$stylevar[left]">$vbphrase[forum]</td>
<td class="thead" width="175">$vbphrase[last_post]</td>
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[threads]</td>
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[posts]</td>
<if condition="$vboptions[showmoderatorcolumn]">
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[moderator]</td>
</if>
</tr>
</thead>and replace with <if condition="!in_array($forumid, array(X,Y,Z))"><thead>
<tr align="center">
<td class="thead">&nbsp;</td>
<td class="thead" width="100%" align="$stylevar[left]">$vbphrase[forum]</td>
<td class="thead" width="175">$vbphrase[last_post]</td>
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[threads]</td>
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[posts]</td>
<if condition="$vboptions[showmoderatorcolumn]">
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[moderator]</td>
</if>
</tr>
</thead></if>This time, X, Y, and Z are the forums that contain the category only subforums, i.e. "Test Child Forum" in the attached images. They will NOT be the same $forumid's that you used in the other steps. It should look like this afterward: 61915

I'm pretty sure with all this info, Cybernetec may be able to incorporate this into the product?? :) It would be easy to add 2 more Exclude boxes for the 2 conditionals I added above, right?

Edit: For some reason "Exclude Forums" doesn't work at all on my forum... It just makes the columns closer together.. does this happen for anyone else?

Edit: Nevermind. I understand what the Exclude is for now. I thought it HID the subforums entirely. It just gets rid of the column formatting. :)

This may be the same thing as the quotes below, but just in case it's not.

This is what I need:
I desperately need to make the forums appear the same in the "Category" view as they do on the Forumhome, and for sub-forums to also appear the same in the "Forum" view as they do on the Forumhome. Can this be done? This would be an immense help.

Thank you for sharing your hard work, it's greatly appreciated.

IText removed, Changed layout.

Howeverit looks like this hack only works on the home page, any way to get it to work on other Pages?

e.g a sub forum, that has Multiple sub forums?

I know this says for forum home, but on forumdisplay it arranges them in subcolumns as well. However, on forumdisplay it bunches them more closely together even though there is room for the subforums to be listed more organized (like on forumhome)

How can I get the spacing on forumdisplay to be like the spacing on forumhome?

*edit*
I found out that on forumdisplay its contingent upon the length of the forum description.

cybernetec, I would be interested in this too. Thoughts?

Me too, I would be interested in a forumdisplay sub-forums manager.

I am willing to pay for it.

I have pm'd cybernetec several times about this but no response. I too am willing to pay.

Hi it says columns but it dont seem to be working as i had hoped

I wanted it like this
Colum1-----Colum2-----Colum3-----Colum4
subforum1--subforum2--subforum3--subforum4
subforum5--subforum6--subforum7--subforum8
subforum9--subforum10

But instead it just shows 1 colum no matter how many i add?

I think this is because i have a heavily modified style,
How can i sort this manually please?

I think I have a similar problem as some other people with a large number of sublevels. Here's my basic forum breakdown, as I'd like to set it:

Cat01
Cat01-Subcat01
Cat01-Subcat01-Forum01
Cat01-Subcat01-Forum02
Cat01-Subcat01-Forum03
Cat01-Subcat02
Cat01-Subcat02-Forum04
Cat01-Subcat02-Forum05
Cat02
Cat02-Subcat03
Cat02-Subcat03-Forum06
Cat02-Subcat03-Forum07
Cat02-Subcat03-Subsubcat01
Cat02-Subcat03-Subsubcat01-Forum08
Cat02-Subcat03-Subsubcat01-Forum09
Cat02-Subcat03-Subsubcat02
Cat02-Subcat03-Subsubcat02-Forum10
Cat02-Subcat03-Subsubcat02-Forum11
Cat03
Cat03-Subcat04
Cat03-Subcat04-Subsubcat03
Cat03-Subcat04-Subsubcat03-Subsubsubcat01
Cat03-Subcat04-Subsubcat03-Subsubsubcat01-Forum12
Cat03-Subcat04-Subsubcat03-Subsubsubcat01-Forum13
Cat03-Subcat04-Subsubcat03-Subsubsubcat01-Forum14
... and on and on.

I have over 140 forums tightly organized to keep each category index from scrolling for miles. I could shrink it back to Cat-Forum-Subforum, but the index would be ungodly long.

Subcategories currently look hideous no matter what I do. I've been forced to change some subcategory levels (alternating) into closed forums with open subforums so that at least some of the indexes look as intended. I end up with the following:

Cat01
Cat01-Forum01
Cat01-Forum01-Subforum01
Cat01-Forum01-Subforum02
Cat01-Forum01-Subforum03
Cat01-Forum02
Cat01-Forum02-Subforum04
Cat01-Forum02-Subforum05
Cat02
Cat02-Forum03
Cat02-Forum03-Subforum06
Cat02-Forum03-Subforum07
Cat02-Forum03-Subforum08
Cat02-Forum03-Subforum08-Subsubforum01
Cat02-Forum03-Subforum08-Subsubforum02
Cat02-Forum03-Subforum09
Cat02-Forum03-Subforum09-Subsubforum03
Cat02-Forum03-Subforum09-Subsubforum04
Cat03
Cat03-Forum04
Cat03-Forum04-Subforum10
Cat03-Forum04-Subforum10-Subcat01
Cat03-Forum04-Subforum10-Subcat01-Subforum11
Cat03-Forum04-Subforum10-Subcat01-Subforum12
Cat03-Forum04-Subforum10-Subcat01-Subforum13
... and on and on.

I know it looks strange, and I don't like it either, but the result is that only every other level looks messed up (the "bad" levels do not display in columns as expected). It's the best I can do to make it partially presentable. It's almost like there needs to be a way to set the display such that subcategories receive subforum style treatment when they are beneath the current view level instead of category styles, and to be able to force the beautiful column format at every level, no matter how deep.

I've tried tinkering with various combinations of the following settings:
Depth of Forums - Forum Home: 2
Depth of Forums - Forum Display: 2
Depth of Sub-Forums: 1

Anything but this breaks everything and looks even worse.

I guess my question is, has anyone else found a fix for this. I tried the hacks above, and they didn't help. The problem got worse. Will the upcoming update fix these issues? If so, please tell me it's coming soon. I'd be happy to beta test it... :D

Regardless, thanks for a great mod! Even in its current state, VB's waaaaaay better than without it. It should be in the source code! :up:

the further down you go in subforums. the more screwy the columns become..

I have one Cat that goes 5 subforums deep
