Ok I did this in a few hours since I get asked so much about my scripts on other sites so don't expect much. It is a very lite portal but can be easily expanded and customized to your likings!

Sorry if you are expecting the normal rich feature portal, I just don't have the time to make one.

Maybe in the future I will have some more time to spend on this and make it better :)

How about a screenshot? ;)
Nothing fancy, just a script for news and some sidebars with the default template.

These sites have the same script running them other then I removed the right bar additions (POTD, Featured Item, Global News and File Downloads) to the code and made it a bit more user friendly.

http://www.totalbf2.com/

This site http://www.teamati.com is running the same script just modded for their site :)

So in the end a screenshot only shows my imagination and not yours, this is just the base script for your home page.

It is a very simple plugin that pretty much posts news from your forums onto an external HTML (welcome) page. Think of it as a no frills portal page - which is what I have been looking for some time.

jaysonx
10 Aug 2006, 00:22
Ran into my first issue when trying to install, when I go into the plugin system (using vBulletin 3.6.0), it says "This file appears to be a Product, not a Plugin. Please use Manage Products to add this file."

I then added it as a product but nothing is showing up in my vBulletin options. Do I need to add a product dependency or anything? I am kinda new to this plugin stuff.

jaysonx

Nevermind, I did not name the product correctly - it must be named the same as the filename.

No, I may port it to 3.5.x as it is pretty much the same code.

because when i try to import the product it give an error, can you arrange this to functiom om 3.5.4?

Awesome, i'd love to see this take off and users contribute to it, as it seems the other portal solution is slowly dying off

Is there a way to force update the news? I noticed that if you edit a post it does not automatically update, only when a new news item is posted.

Mucho kudos on this BTW. It works very similar to the setup that InvisionBoard has for handling news.

I have a similar question....

When you delete a thread from the forum it feeds off of, the post still stays in the portal.

How do i get rid of it?

You can run the cron script called News Cache. This was a trade off to make this script to use very little load. I may make it so deleted threads and edited threads will update it also if it isn't to much work.

Otherwise it will update when a new thread is posted or at 15 past or 15 to the hour.

So would I. I always had people ask me what I use for a news script and could only tell them it was home made and I couldn't point them in any direction to one for them to use as they are all paid now . . . If anyone wants to make additions please pos them here and I will add them in my files download list so people may use them.

Hmm never knew that, never played with IB . . .

Sorry bout that I forgot to add in the option, so until my next build do this.

In index.php find:
eval('print_output("' . fetch_template('smedd_index') . '");');

Add above it:
eval('$navbar = "' . fetch_template('navbar') . '";');

Then you can add the $navbar call to the index template.

Thanks, that worked! :D Also;

What would I put to add the newest poll to it? Like on the vbAdvanced one.

That's a lot more complex, I may put this in for a furture version or someone may do their own code here and release it.

A great script, just what I was looking for - installed on CnCWorld (http://www.cncworld.org)

Just one feature request; the ability to have the poster's name in the news post.

It describes it vaugly in the setup file, look at the note. The problem is there are many templates that you will need to edit like headerinclude to include the forum path.

Right now I don't support this so I won't say much more then that.

How do I edit the template to match my styles?

Just edit the SmEdD's Portal Templates to how you want them.

This is a cool script, I've got it running on a site I'm developing for a client.. it's exactly what I wanted, just a nice and simple news portal without all the crap that a lot of other news scripts have.

Nice work :)

Hi there. I'm looking to slightly modify this mod so that it pulls news from different forums based on which page the user is using it view it.

As it stands at the moment, I've got it pulling news from one forum on the main page. What I'm looking to do is have it pull news from 10 different forums on the main page (which I know is possible using it's default config), but then if a user clicks on the relevant link, it filters out all the other news except for the link he's chosen.

To give a practice example, I'm talking about news from forums named 'wind power', 'solar power', 'hydro power', etc.. On the main page it'll list news from all these forums, but as soon as someone clicks on, say, 'wind power', it'll then only list the wind related news.

Is this possible? What sort of modifications would I need to make?

I've got a problem.... This does not seem to like custom BBCode.

I've got a tag, [IMGR], which will align an image to the right. It was quite important for this option to be available because we wanted to have a right aligned image next to each post. Is there any way this can be made to work with custom BBCode?

Cheers

Very nice job with this!

I have it installed and working great, I'd like to include the "what's going on" information in the footer. I found the code in FORUMHOME template, but when I attempt to add it the members names fail to generate.

Anyone added this to the footer?

I'm typically a lurker and don't post much. but I had to say thanks for this script. Since phpBB became crap I lost fetchall which I LOVED.

This script is exactly what I was looking for giving me the flexibility to bring news to the portal but otherwise do what I want with the portal.

I've only been working on my new site (re-vamp) for a couple days and the only thing I'm lost on is adding additional content pages. Do I just create new templates and then call the templates out of the index? (sorry, I'm new to working on the guts in VB).

Thank you for this script and the time you vested into it.

rename the index.php and alter the templates it calls.

so yes, create new templates and creatre a new index and call the new templates from the new php file.

This mod is a good mod for creating custom pages.

Look at the way the index pulls templates and copy the way it does for new pages.

Yea, that part was no problem. But now I have a bunch of individual pages where I'd rather just have "index.php?page=pagename" which would call to the template file.

Great mod, thanx alot, I do have a few questions tho:

-The news block does not show up, am i missing somthing? I did add the forum id's, ran the cron, but still nothing.

-Also I would like to know how to create a latest image block as seen on the sample sites.

Thanks in advance

Yea, that part was no problem. But now I have a bunch of individual pages where I'd rather just have "index.php?page=pagename" which would call to the template file.

edit index.php - replace:

eval('print_output("' . fetch_template('smedd_index') . '");');
?>

with

if ($_REQUEST['do'] == 'page1')
{
eval('print_output("' . fetch_template('page1') . '");');
}
else
{
eval('print_output("' . fetch_template('smedd_index') . '");');
}
?>

in admin cpanel create new template called page1 and put this as code:

$stylevar[htmldoctype]
<html dir="$stylevar[textdirection]" lang="$stylevar[languagecode]">
<head>
$headinclude
<title>$vboptions[hometitle]</title>
</head>
<body>
$header
$navbar
<br />

<table align="center" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="100%">
<tr valign="top">
<td>$left_side</td>
<td>&nbsp;&nbsp;</td>

<td width="100%">

<table align="center" border="0" cellpadding="$stylevar[cellpadding]" cellspacing="$stylevar[cellspacing]" class="tborder" width="100%">
<tr>
<td align="center" class="tcat">

<strong>TITLE GOES HERE</strong></td>

</tr>
<tr>
<td class="alt1">

INSERT YOUR CODE HERE

</td>
</tr>
</table>

<br />

</td>
<td>&nbsp;&nbsp;</td>

</tr>
</table>

$footer
</body>
</html>

finally add link to this page in sidebar template (left or right):

<a href="?do=page1">&nbsp;&raquo;LINK TITLE</a><br />
