Separate Forum Categories

Version: 1.0.1
Author: RS_Jelle
Description: This mod separates each forum category on the forum home without any template edits. The category header is added to the top of each separated category. This will be done for ALL the styles on your forum. Have a look at the attached screenshot and everything will become clear if you don't get the point :)
Why? I created this mod because someone requested (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=123503) it.
Limitations:
It's possible that this mod won't work properly on highly customized styles.
The 'Last Post' column can be smaller than normal if the thread titles of the category forums are all small (you can only fix this with a template edit). Have a look at the attached screenshot to see this limitation.

First post reserved :)

A bit more about the limitations:

The category header bar is necessary, otherwise your layout will be screwed. It can't be done without it.
I will never fix these limitations. The mod is about doing it without any template edits and the only way to get around the limitations are template edits.

Nice release, I'd install this if the Forum, Last Post, Threads, and Posts bar was placed under the category bar.

That's also a limitation, then you have to do a template edit:

First install the product
Open forumhome_forumbit_level1_nopost and remove the following code:
<tbody>
<tr>
<td class="tcat" colspan="<if condition="$vboptions[showmoderatorcolumn]">6<else />5</if>">
<a style="float:$stylevar[right]" href="#top" onclick="return toggle_collapse('forumbit_$forumid')"><img id="collapseimg_forumbit_$forumid" src="$stylevar[imgdir_button]/collapse_tcat{$collapseimg_forumid}.gif" alt="" border="0" /></a>
<a href="forumdisplay.php?$session[sessionurl]f=$forum[forumid]">$forum[title]</a>
<if condition="$show['forumdescription']"><div class="smallfont">$forum[description]</div></if>
<if condition="$show['subforums']"><div class="smallfont"><strong>$vbphrase[subforums]</strong>: $forum[subforums]</div></if>
</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
Open forumhome_seperate_forumcats and add the following code at the end of the template:
<tbody>
<tr>
<td class="tcat" colspan="<if condition="$vboptions[showmoderatorcolumn]">6<else />5</if>">
<a style="float:$stylevar[right]" href="#top" onclick="return toggle_collapse('forumbit_$forumid')"><img id="collapseimg_forumbit_$forumid" src="$stylevar[imgdir_button]/collapse_tcat{$collapseimg_forumid}.gif" alt="" border="0" /></a>
<a href="forumdisplay.php?$session[sessionurl]f=$forum[forumid]">$forum[title]</a>
<if condition="$show['forumdescription']"><div class="smallfont">$forum[description]</div></if>
<if condition="$show['subforums']"><div class="smallfont"><strong>$vbphrase[subforums]</strong>: $forum[subforums]</div></if>

We can do this also by adding a white <tr><td></td></tr> but the border will style be shown.

Indeed, that's the first thing I tested, but that was very ugly with that border and background color -like you said-.

Thank you very much Jelle for this great hack!
Particularly beautifully: It is valid XHTML! ;)

Limitations:

Find in:
- FORUMDISPLAY
- FORUMHOME
- forumhome_seperate_forumcats

<tr align="center">
<td class="thead">&nbsp;</td>
<td class="thead" width="100%" align="$stylevar[left]">$vbphrase[forum]</td>
<td class="thead" width="175">$vbphrase[last_post]</td>
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[threads]</td>
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[posts]</td>
<if condition="$vboptions['showmoderatorcolumn']">
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[moderator]</td>
</if>
</tr>

And replace it with (for example):

<tr align="center">
<td class="thead" width="5%">&nbsp;</td>
<td class="thead" width="50%" align="$stylevar[left]">$vbphrase[forum]</td>
<td class="thead" width="35%">$vbphrase[last_post]</td>
<td class="thead" width="5%">$vbphrase[threads]</td>
<td class="thead" width="5%">$vbphrase[posts]</td>
<if condition="$vboptions['showmoderatorcolumn']">
<td class="thead" width="0%">$vbphrase[moderator]</td>
</if>
</tr>

Notice how not all of the table cells (<td> tags) have width attributes. You need to give each cell a width attribute, and the total widths need to equal 100% of the horrizontal space. Percentages work well for this.

Kind Regards

You can find template edit mods for this here (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=123530) and here (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=127875) ;)

Edit: too late, lol :p

Which other mods (using plugins) are you using on your forum? I think one of them are causing the incompatibility.

Or have you modified some of the forumhome templates? Try creating a new style to force all the default templates etc. :)

These fixes seems to post the entire hack again as template mods.

Short of uninstalling this addon and using one of the other hacks, what mods do we need to make (with this addon installed) to make all of the columns match up? (The sizes are all off on the "last post" column).

Here is what you want to do if you are having problems with misaligned columns.

Edit these 2 templates

- FORUMHOME
- forumhome_seperate_forumcats

Replace forumhome_seperate_forumcats with the following code:

</table>
<br />
<table class="tborder" cellpadding="$stylevar[cellpadding]" cellspacing="$stylevar[cellspacing]" border="0" width="100%" align="center">
<tbody>
<td class="thead" width="5%">&nbsp;</td>
<td class="thead" width="70%" align="$stylevar[left]">$vbphrase[forum]</td>
<td class="thead" width="15%">$vbphrase[last_post]</td>
<td class="thead" width="5%">$vbphrase[threads]</td>
<td class="thead" width="5%">$vbphrase[posts]</td>
<if condition="$vboptions['showmoderatorcolumn']">
<td class="thead" width="0%">$vbphrase[moderator]</td>
</if>
</tbody>

In FORUMHOME

Look for this

<!-- main -->
<table class="tborder" cellpadding="$stylevar[cellpadding]" cellspacing="$stylevar[cellspacing]" border="0" width="100%" align="center">

and put this after

<tbody>
<td class="thead" width="5%">&nbsp;</td>
<td class="thead" width="70%" align="$stylevar[left]">$vbphrase[forum]</td>
<td class="thead" width="15%">$vbphrase[last_post]</td>
<td class="thead" width="5%">$vbphrase[threads]</td>
<td class="thead" width="5%">$vbphrase[posts]</td>
<if condition="$vboptions['showmoderatorcolumn']">
<td class="thead" width="0%">$vbphrase[moderator]</td>
</if>
</tbody>

If you see a double row of the table headers, look for a set of code like the above and delete it. It should be right after the code you just added above.

Hi, did you apply the above fix to your forums? Because if you did, it ain't working. The columns are not aligned properly. I read that even with the above fix it may or may not align the columns. Part of the problem is the length of the last post title. It may be need to be shortened in the admin cp.

I tried messing around with the templates to get this to line up correctly. I edited forumhome and the template that gets installed with this mod, I think it was called forumhome_separate_categories. I got them to align perfectly. Problem was that when the browser window was large, the columns aligned, but when you resized the browser window smaller, the columns became unaligned.

the percentages were like this, for both templates;

<td class="thead">&nbsp;</td>
<td class="thead" width="55%" align="$stylevar[left]">$vbphrase[forum]</td>
<td class="thead" width="25%">$vbphrase[last_post]</td>
<td class="thead" width="10%">$vbphrase[threads]</td>
<td class="thead" width="10%">$vbphrase[posts]</td>
<if condition="$vboptions['showmoderatorcolumn']">
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[moderator]</td>

Thank you

AdminCP -> Plugins & Products -> Manage Products -> Add/Import Product ;)
Select the file and hit the Import button, that's all.

@everyone: I'm planning a fix for the alignment problem, but it will require template edits ofcourse.

Alright, I wanted to edit this myself without this md how would I be able to do it?

I'm trying to edit the entire category table as if it were all in one template, this is what I'm trying to do:

http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=142042

Thank you, please PM so I know you've replied.

it would be great if this thread was updated to include the correct template changes as an option in the orginal post to achieve the forums/threads/posts below the category and have the columns aligned properly. there are so many different options and instructions contained in this thread it is confusing to know which template edits to follow.

I guess some of it depends on the style you use. Not all the code is located in the same place. And trying to do this with a product doesn't work perfectly, not without template edits. One of the biggest issues is the last post column. Depending on the length of the last post, that can throw it all out of whack. You can control the length of the last post info in the admin cp. But you won't need to do that if you set a fixed width for that column.

What I did was remove the threads and posts columns and added a fixed width to the last post column. But, most won't want to remove those 2 columns.

If you use this mod, your forum categories will not collapse properly.

Is there a way to install this mod for ONE style and not the other?

This mod wrecks the chestnut style which already puts a space between each category.

And then the member voted in style doesn't put a space. I really want a space, but I don't want to destroy chestnut.

ETA: Nevermind. Found a mod for a template edit. Uninstalled. Nice hack though if not for being unable to restrict it to specific styles.

Great hack, too late for me though. Lol I did it the template edit way following these instructions (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=224461) over at vBulletin.com. And to those interested - yes you can insert banners or images between the forums. We have done this on Signoholics (even learned how to make them stretch :)) by following these instructions (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=169892), again over at vBulletin.com.

Is there an update for 3.7.0.
They tell me that one of the plugins on my forum is preventing "Rebuild Custom Avatars" from working and this is one of the only 3 mods I have installed.

I've just installed it and worked great.

But I have some sob-forums working as categories inside a forum and the mod is separating all those sub-forums as individual ones. I know this is possible but I just can't figure out how to keep them together just like original.

Can someone give me a tip for ?

Tks.

figured out the problem...i was not using the "act as forum=no" option in the forum manager. Once I did that the effects were implemented immediately ...but I'm not sure if I am crazy about the "forum" heading over each category. plan to play around with it a little more.

I have this installed and have got the spacing sorted, I've also managed to ge the forum title above the 'forum - last post - etc' row, and here's where the problem comes in: my first category title isn't showing correctely, it's showing whatever the title of the bottom forum is.

IE atm the title of my first category should be 'Welcome' but it's showing up as 'Feedback'. Feedback is the forum at the very bottom of the page in the final category, whatever I change the bottom forum to is what is displayed as the title of the first category.

Needless to say I'm confused! Can anyone help?

It happened after I altered the FORUMHOME template, if it helps this is what it looks like now...

Hey everyone if you're having issues with the with of the columns from one block to the next, just adjust those percentages in the FORUMHOME, FORUMDISPLAY, forumhome_seperate_forumcats templates that KURTZ mentioned towards the top of this page. I changed my "Last_Post", "Posts", and "Threads" percentages a bit. It took a few minutes because it's all trial and error but hey... you own a website.

The 'Last Post' column can be smaller than normal if the thread titles of the category forums are all small (you can only fix this with a template edit). Have a look at the attached screenshot to see this limitation.

I have this problem, how can I fix this?

In these templates:

- FORUMDISPLAY
- FORUMHOME
- forumhome_seperate_forumcats

search:

<tr align="center">

<td class="thead">$vbphrase[posts]</td>
<if condition="$vboptions['showmoderatorcolumn']">

</if>

<td class="thead" width="20%">$vbphrase[last_post]</td>
<td class="thead" width="5%">$vbphrase[threads]</td>
<td class="thead" width="5%">$vbphrase[posts]</td>
<if condition="$vboptions['showmoderatorcolumn']">

haha, didn't work for me man =[

You sure you adjusted everything correctly?

Try this... after copying the section we're talking about in your FORUMHOME, FORUMDISPLAY, and forumhome_seperate_forumcats templates and saving them somewhere else just to be safe, replace them with this...

<thead>
<tr align="center">
<td class="thead" width="7%">&nbsp;</td>
<td class="thead" width="45%" align="$stylevar[left]">$vbphrase[forum]</td>
<td class="thead" width="32%">$vbphrase[last_post]</td>
<td class="thead" width="7%">$vbphrase[threads]</td>
<td class="thead" width="9%">$vbphrase[posts]</td>
<if condition="$vboptions['showmoderatorcolumn']">
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[moderator]</td>
</if>
</tr>
</thead>

If you see absolutely no change, something is wrong.

That's also a limitation, then you have to do a template edit:

<if condition="$show['subforums']"><div class="smallfont"><strong>$vbphrase[subforums]</strong>: $forum[subforums]</div></if>
</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
Open forumhome_seperate_forumcats and add the following code at the end of the template:
<tbody>
<tr>
<td class="tcat" colspan="<if condition="$vboptions[showmoderatorcolumn]">6<else />5</if>">

I have tried this, but they are still all squashed to the right. The only one that I couldn't do is: forumhome_seperate_forumcats I don't have one of those unser my FORUMHOME or anywhere else that I can see.

Can you help me on this please?

Solved. I deleted my Thread Prefixes for that subforum, now the columns are all the same.

Would you or some else be kind enough as to explain what you mean / have done in Layman's terms please? I am new to this. :)

Many Thanks.

** EDIT **

In fact, I don't have the "Forum, Last Post, Threads or Posts (or the bar in which they reside) at the top of my main forum either. So that would explain why I can't find the "forumhome_seperate_forumcats", Would some be kind enough as to guide me through how I would add this back to my forum Please?

I would be very grateful.

That's not possible with this mod. This mod is about separating forum categories without template edits and this would require them.

Well, ok, but how did You manage it to change this columns?
On this pic You can see the "Forum, Last Post, Threads or Posts"-bar UNDER the name of the forum.

This still seems to work in 3.8.2

But how do I fix these alignments?

That's part of the limitations of doing this with a simple plugin :)
This mod is about doing it without template edits. There are template modifications to do this in a better way.

Can you point me (if necessary via pm) to the right direction? Because I tried several template edits mods on this forum, but either the first forum is not aligning, or otherwise the "last thread text" get's under 20-25 signs, which I don't want.:)

Hey thanks...I also found the code in all three templates and replaced the code like you said from your post on page 1. This re-aligned all the forums under "Last Post"....Thanks again for a great hack! :up:

Hi there,

Is there a way that this mod can make more space between the categories bigger?

I just want to increase the gap a little bit more between the categories. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Can anyone point me in the right direction or if this is even possible?...thanks!

Open the product XML, find <br /> and replace it with <br /><br /> or even more :)

I searched the XML file (product-seperate-forumcats.xml) and I can't find "<br />" anywhere.

Do you know what line it is on out of the 63 lines?

Never mind....I found it in the "forumhome_seperate_forumcats" template...thanks!

That's also a limitation, then you have to do a template edit:
First install the product
Open forumhome_forumbit_level1_nopost and remove the following code:
<tbody>
<tr>
<td class="tcat" colspan="<if condition="$vboptions[showmoderatorcolumn]">6<else />5</if>">
<a style="float:$stylevar[right]" href="#top" onclick="return toggle_collapse('forumbit_$forumid')"><img id="collapseimg_forumbit_$forumid" src="$stylevar[imgdir_button]/collapse_tcat{$collapseimg_forumid}.gif" alt="" border="0" /></a>
<a href="forumdisplay.php?$session[sessionurl]f=$forum[forumid]">$forum[title]</a>
<if condition="$show['forumdescription']"><div class="smallfont">$forum[description]</div></if>
<if condition="$show['subforums']"><div class="smallfont"><strong>$vbphrase[subforums]</strong>: $forum[subforums]</div></if>
</td>
</tr>
</tbody>
Open forumhome_seperate_forumcats and add the following code at the end of the template:
<tbody>
<tr>
<td class="tcat" colspan="<if condition="$vboptions[showmoderatorcolumn]">6<else />5</if>">
<a style="float:$stylevar[right]" href="#top" onclick="return toggle_collapse('forumbit_$forumid')"><img id="collapseimg_forumbit_$forumid" src="$stylevar[imgdir_button]/collapse_tcat{$collapseimg_forumid}.gif" alt="" border="0" /></a>
<a href="forumdisplay.php?$session[sessionurl]f=$forum[forumid]">$forum[title]</a>
<if condition="$show['forumdescription']"><div class="smallfont">$forum[description]</div></if>
<if condition="$show['subforums']"><div class="smallfont"><strong>$vbphrase[subforums]</strong>: $forum[subforums]</div></if>
</td>
</tr>
</tbody>

Hi , that code is changed in 3.8.7, can you please help me to do this ? The actual code is (there's a opened <if> in the final part....):

<tbody> </if> <tr> <td class="tcat" colspan="<if condition="$vboptions[showmoderatorcolumn]">6<else />5</if>">
<if condition="$childforumbits"> <a style="float:$stylevar[right]" href="#top" onclick="return toggle_collapse('forumbit_$forumid')"><img id="collapseimg_forumbit_$forumid" src="$stylevar[imgdir_button]/collapse_tcat{$collapseimg_forumid}.gif" alt="" border="0" /></a> </if>
<a href="forumdisplay.php?$session[sessionurl]f=$forum[forumid]">$forum[title]</a> <if condition="$show['forumdescription']"><div class="smallfont">$forum[description]</div></if>
<if condition="$show['subforums']"><div class="smallfont"><strong>$vbphrase[subforums]</strong>: $forum[subforums]</div></if> </td> </tr>
<if condition="!$show['collapsable_forums']"> </tbody>
