A New newthread look!

Version: 1.1
Released: 21 June 2009
Manual Template Edits: [1]
Optional Edits: [1]

This small modification changes the way your newthread template looks, and feels. It compacts the message area, with the additional options area. Sometimes I find my users don't even know those additional options are there, so this makes browsing easier from a users point of view.

[OPTIONAL]
To get the most out of this hack I suggest you install Princeton's GTSmiliebox - Move Smilies Below Editor (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=178327). Once installed, find the Message Posting Interface Options in the vBulletin options and I suggest changing the Smilebox Total Smilies and Smiliebox Smilies Per Row to 25 for best viewing!

Looks great and works great except for one small problem. Nothing big at all but makes it look a little ugly. I have the check for similar thread mod installed. So when I paste the thread title and the screen refreshes I get a big gap on top of the tags text box. Any idea on how to fix that? Thanks

I had this problem without the tag suggestions turned on.

I added valign="top" to the left side's table data tag, which fixed it for me (highlighted in red in the codebox below).

I also changed the width to 335 pixels, so that the right side message editing area can float as desired to fit my fluid width style (highlighed in blue below).

<table class="tborder" cellpadding="$stylevar[cellpadding]" cellspacing="$stylevar[cellspacing]" border="0" width="100%" align="center">

A few notes:

I reverted the FORUMRULES template, as the changes here affect anywhere that box appears... including SHOWTHREAD.

It shouldn't be hard to tweak this to replace the NEWREPLY template for consistency. I'm also toying with the idea of tweaking it for private messages (PM_NEWPM template), replacing the entire Control Panel left-side menu when someone's composing a PM. :rolleyes:

How to make the left half boxes (where the attachment, tag box are) a bit smaller?

I think this mod can be applied to newreply template as well.

Good point, I'm heading off to work now but will come up with a solution when I get back tonight.

It shouldn't be hard to tweak this to replace the NEWREPLY template for consistency. I'm also toying with the idea of tweaking it for private messages (PM_NEWPM template), replacing the entire Control Panel left-side menu when someone's composing a PM. :rolleyes: As per PM - Go for it :)

How to make the left half boxes (where the attachment, tag box are) a bit smaller? Find (newthread template) <td width="50%" class="alt2"> and change 50% to something smaller, like 30%. Find <td align="center" width="50%" class="alt1"> and change 50% to the amount remaining to make 100. So if you set the first TD to 30%, this one needs to be 70%.

I think this mod can be applied to newreply template as well. Correct, something is in the works.

Sure, just a matter of flip-flopping the two datacells. Try this template instead of the one in the first post. You may still want to adjust the column widths as lordtopcat showed in post 13 of this thread (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showpost.php?p=1834190&postcount=13).

How do we highlight the area around the tag box in another color so people would notice it and more likely to tag the new thread.

I've tried to get people to tag for a while and maybe they just overlook it.

You COULD use the automatic thread tagger too :D. I do

I reverted the FORUMRULES template, as the changes here affect anywhere that box appears... including SHOWTHREAD.
If you use this Posting rule template edit, you can even remove the forum rule box

Certainly.

Of course, replacing xxxxxx with your hexidecimal code. So for example it should look like this:

http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=129349

Or just delete the line that states $forumrules from this modification. ;)

I went ahead and put together a forumrules box that matches the rest of the options section.

[INSTALLATION]
Styles & Templates -> Search in Templates -> NEWTHREAD

Locate $forumrules, and replace that line with the following:
<!--- posting rules adjustment --->
<fieldset class="fieldset"><legend>Forum Rules</legend>
You <strong>may $rules[postnew]</strong> post new threads.<br />
You <strong>may $rules[postreply]</strong> post replies.<br />
You <strong>may $rules[attachment]</strong> post attachments.<br />
You <strong>may $rules[edit]</strong> edit your posts.<br />

You <if condition="$foruminfo[allowsmilies]"><strong>may</strong> use <a href="misc.php?$session[sessionurl]
do=showsmilies">smilies</a><else /><strong>may not</strong> use smilies</if> in your posts.<br />
You <if condition="$foruminfo[allowimages]"><strong>may</strong> post <a href="misc.php?$session[sessionurl]
do=bbcode#imgcode">images</a><else /><strong>may not</strong> post images</if> in your posts.<br />
You <if condition="$foruminfo[allowhtml]"><strong>may</strong> use HTML<else /><strong>may not</strong> use HTML</if> in your
posts.<br />
<hr />
<phrase 1="misc.php?$session[sessionurl]do=showrules">$vbphrase[forum_rules_link]</phrase>
</fieldset>
<!--- / posting rules adjustment --->

The same code change can be used in my companion modification "A new 'newreply' look (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=216764)", installed in NEWREPLY template. ;)

Change the column percentages to fixed pixels. The "editor box on left" code earlier in this thread has comments to help you find where to make these adjustments:

<td width="50%" align="center" class="alt1"><!-- set editing column width -->

Adjust the "50%" to a pixel value roughly 2/3 of the width of your style. Then, go further down the template and adjust the other side:

<td width="50%" class="alt2" valign="top"><!-- set options column width -->

Adjust this to roughly 1/3 of the width of your style.

So, for example, if your style is fixed at 800px wide, set the first one for 533px and the second one for 267px:
<td width="533px" for the first value
<td width="267px" for the second value

Adjust the px values until you're satisfied with the column widths. If necessary, adjust the editor box as well:
[OPTIONAL CHANGE]
Open Style Manager -> xx Your Style Here xx -> StyleVars -> Message Area Width

Change this to somewhere in the 330-400 range, then adjust as desired.

Please press Install.

I suspect that an extra <td> </td> pair or an extra <div> </div> pair got into your template. Remove that (verifying against the code above) and you'll be fine.

The attachment of uploads is a different script than posting the message text. I'm hesitant to try to merge the two, as the vBulletin authors kept the code seperate for a reason. :(

I have tried everything to get this to align properly, but still struggling.
I think it may have something to do with extra bbcode icons in message area.

In stylevars our Main table width is 972 , not 972% or 972px.
If i change to px or % the whole forum width goes haywire, so have left at 972

Form width is 540px
User cp form width 480px

User cp message area width is 520px

Looks like those extra icons in your editor might be causing it to stretch.

My Message area width is 600px and this is what I was changing to adjust it.

I also have this

<td width="50%" valign="top" class="alt2">

<td align="center" valign="top" width="50%" class="alt1">

Cheers mate, yeah I am thinking the icons are pushing it across.

Ive tried to find out how to spill the icons onto 2 lines, but cannot seem to find that info.

Perhaps theres a means of popping out extra bb icons, im not sure.

When I try to edit a post, the new look appears, can someone do the edit template?

When you click Install I'll add the Edit template too :)

I just found this mod...in fact only recently started using my VB board again.

This is wonderful although I need to do some tweaking to this mod and to the New Reply mod to get them to look good with my skin.

I would love to see the same mod for Editing Posts...

PS: I have bookmarked your mod so I can make donations come payday next week!

Regards,

Alisa

For all those having issues with the sidebox being wide and pushing the rest out...it is the length of the Tag input box that is the culprit...I simply moved the code for the tags under the smilies box and it's all good :)

Move this entire section:

<if condition="$show['tag_option']">
<fieldset class="fieldset" style="margin-top: $stylevar[cellpadding]px">
<legend>$vbphrase[tags]</legend>
<div style="padding:$stylevar[formspacer]px">
<div>$vbphrase[separate_tags_using_comma]</div>
<span id="tag_add"><input type="text" class="bginput" name="taglist" id="tag_add_input" value="$newpost[taglist]" size="40" tabindex="1" /></span>
<if condition="$show['tags_remain']"><div><phrase 1="$tags_remain">$vbphrase[you_may_add_x_tags_to_thread]</phrase></div></if>
<if condition="$show['popups']">
<div id="tag_add_menu" class="vbmenu_popup" style="display:none"></div>
<script type="text/javascript" src="clientscript/vbulletin_ajax_tagsugg.js?v=$vboptions[simpleversion]"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
<!--
vbmenu_register('tag_add', true);
tag_add_comp = new vB_AJAX_TagSuggest('tag_add_comp', 'tag_add_input', 'tag_add');
tag_add_comp.allow_multiple = true;
tag_add_comp.set_delimiters('$tag_delimiters');
//-->
</script>
</if>
</fieldset>
</if>

to just above:

$posticons

Or wherever suits you :D

**or cos I didn't even think of it...I do prefer the hard way LOL you can probably insert a width for the input box to narrow it down

Edit to add...thanx for this template change! Rude of me to forget that bit LOL

Hmmm mine is still working. Do you have any other mods installed that could be conflicting?

Should have the edit post template out sometime next week..I've had a pretty heavy work load on lately. Thank you to Alisa Lindsay for the kind donation! It really is appreciated.

Great mod! This looks so much nicer on my board. One question: Since many of our group members are older ladies (its for a crochet / knitting group) the small text is a little too small for some of them to read easily. Is there a way to reset the text back to a slightly larger font size?

how would i ad this flashing light to both the tag and the attach files? and can it be in green not red?

Thanks for this mod.
I hope people will stop asking me how to post an image.

by the way can this be added to all of the other message template?

The small text is defined in your theme's CSS defintions. This mod doesn't change that, all it does is reposition the options on the screen.

I don't see a flashing light. :confused:

Lordtopcat and I both got busy with work.... we'll see if one of us can kick out an Edit Post mod in the next few days. You did see the New Post mod (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=216764), right? :rolleyes:

I love this mod...it's beautiful but, is there a way to decrease the size of the post icons area? Or some way to make it so it doesn't stretch my page off to the right?

bump

Basically, I'm looking for a way to make the new stuff we coded in a little thinner so it doesn't stretch the page.

I had to temporarily uninstall due to adding a new customized skin. I'll check back occasionally and maybe reinstall it later.

The post icons display fine for me on 1024x768 with a fluid width theme. Do you have a narrower fixed theme?

Admin CP -> Styles and Templates -> "Posticons" template:

Locate:
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="$stylevar[cellspacing]" border="0" width="95%">

Replace the value in red with a smaller number. If you go too small, the post icons won't display correctly.
