View Full Version : The Longest Thread in History

Ninth Dimension

I was thinking that we would have a bit of fun on out forums, and start a "Longest Thread Competition"

The idea is that you start a thread on your site called "The Longest Thread in History" like I have done here (http://bbs.ofdan.net/showthread.php?threadid=378), and then try and make it longer than anyone elses forums longest thread (if you know what I mean).

The topic of the thread is open to what anyone wants to talk about, for example we have played word games, asked random questions, discussed the weather, and just had a really good time.

I guess that because this is not going to be anything more than a bit of fun, we only need a few rules, but here they are:

1, The longest thread must be a new thread started when you enter the competition.
2, The thread must be named "The Longest Thread in History".
3, once you have started your thread, you must post a link to it here.
4, the competition starts as soon as you post your link.
5, You can talk about whatever you want but dont post short messages only like smilies or "k".
6, the competition ends in one month - 4th March 2002, (so you had better enter quick)

Now I fully admit that I've got a bit of a head start on you guys, but my forum is so small that it would be EASY for you guys to catch up with me, and just think of the appraisal when you over take the guy that started this competition.

Now after all, this is nothing more than a bit of fun, so there will be no prizes other than an announcement on my forum stated that you have won (I personally will not be entering the competition because Ill be moderating it)

And remember, as they used to say on The Big Breakfast, "Don't phone in, it's just for fun".

On your marks, Get set, GO!!

Stretchr, I would not worry too much, all of these old threads are not going to be included in the competition, only new ones started at the time of entry, so you don't have to worry too much.

Just give it your best shot, maybe you should email all your members and ask them to come along and help out, it might even help generate more threads on other parts of the board.

anyway, good luck :)

LOL. Yeah, I'll try that. We're an awfully new board anyway. It's just for fun so we'll play along. Kind of interesting visiting the other boards since there are some really good, active communities out there. I'll enjoy joining some of them and participating in their content, so nothing lost and lots gained. Best of luck to everyone! :D

No, adding old threads are not allowed, however you could close that thread, telling everyone to go to the new one, and once the competition is over, and i've had a chance to count all the entries, you could then merge the two threads togther :)

Quickie - Daniel - This thread is being counted as vb.org's longest thread, right? And you are getting all the information from contestants (participants) out of the same thread, right? So, can we still fill this thread with spam to help out vb.org? :D Not that I want this forum to win, since I'm entering myself. *lol* But just curious.

It's easy to win this contest, merge all threads together to one, in decent traffic site, you should be able to make it over 100,00 posts in one day :D.

For everyone that has entered the competition, on the 3rd March you will need to close your longest thread, and then on the 4th i'll go and count them all, and post the winners here, I was going to give weekly updates, but too many people entered :)

well, as this is only a bit of fun, the time does not really matter too much :)

just as long as the thread is closed with I check it on the 4th when I check it, you will be OK.

Now there's a cunning way to weed a few out! Our 3rd March might be your 4th March! What time zone are you in Daniel, and we'll work it out from that.

You know, this is a very good point :)

I'm in GMT (London), although at the moment i'm sleeping until quite late in the day (being a lazy git) so you should not have too much trouble, even if the thread is not closed strictly on the 3rd, just as long as by the time I get to it, it's closed, then i'll be a happy bunny.

I just hope that everyone taking part in this competition see's this message in time :)

Will you be posting a standings chart after the contest closes? I know we may not win, but I would like to see how we fare against everyone else.

PS:

How about we divide the total number of posts in the thread by the number of registered members of the board to get an "effective post number"

This would give the smaller sites a chance to compete!

Shouldn't this have been set from the start, instead of changed towards the end of the contest??

Have like a consolation bracket? *lol* I like this idea. I don't want to change the rules because it's already started and almost over, but the cnsolation bracket is a nice idea. Especially since I"m one of those 'small boards' who stands no way of competing, but the effort is valiant!

Hi Daniel

We dutifully closed our thread at midnight GMT as suggested. Now take a peek - all legal posts!

http://www.techimo.com/forum/t12106.html

And we even complied with our forum's bad language policy! :D

Have fun counting Daniel - don't let anyone sneak in any unlawful posts will ya! :D

Oh, and make sure they posted their thread in yours - woudn't want to look silly announcing a winner now, would ya? ;)

BTW if you are gonna do this again, give us a hoy - it was fun!

I think that our thread did rather well at honda-acura.net, even if we did get a late start and an early close. Our last reply was at 03-03-2002 04:07 PM which I believe to be well early of the proposed end time. I and I'm sure others we're going to kill it this evening but that's coo, we still have complete ownage. :pleased:

OK, now at this point I must admit that I've been a very bad boy, as i'm sure you have seen for yourself, i've been so busy with everything that is going on at the moment, including looking for a job, that this is not hight on my list of things to do, I'm REALLY SORRY!!!

At this point, can I suggest that everyone that has entered the competition please post your results to this thread please? the info that I would be looking for is as follows:

1, Number of posts (including the first one).
2, Number of users.
3, Number of pages.

Now this was just for fun at the end of the day, so I hope that no one is too upset by my not being able to do what I said I would do, but if anything this little competition should have helped all your boards get that little bit more populated :)

Hi Daniel

I must confess I'm disappointed :disappointed: that you didn't read every post in our thread - there is some very creative stuff in there! :D :p

But maybe looking for a job is more important :cross-eyed: just maybe :devious: :ponder:

But, anyway, here's our results:

http://www.techimo.com/forum/t12106.html

Users (registered members): 6011
Pages: 506 (forum default, whatever that is!)

Thanks for getting this comp up and running - it certainly helped create a spirit of fun on our site! :) :cheeky:

BTW, if anyone wants to start a similar comp let us know - we'll be in it! :)

Cheers

1: 26694
2: 28,277, but I don't feel this should apply to anything. For our own purposes, we require guests to register in order to visit our forums. The ratio of active to lurking is low.
3: 668 pages, although again, the number of posts per page differs from forum to forum.

if someone else wants to go to all of the sites that have joined, count it all up and announce a winner, then that is fine by me, personally as there is nothing to gain out of winning though (no prize, only for the fun of it) i'm sure that the winner would already know who they are.
