vbProArcade v1.0 Flash Games Development Thread

This thread is intended to provide support for those who wish to find new games for their Arcades, or wish to assist in the development of new games for vbProArcade, or wish to modify existing, open-source Flash games for use with vbProArcade.

Note to vbulletin.org moderators: I could not find an appropriate place for this thread, other than the Beta Hacks forum, so here it is. If you feel this should be moved somewhere else, by all means do so. An additional reason I posted it here was because, to my knowledge, only registered users can view this thread, which may contain hack code at one point or another.

For the hack itself, you will need to see this thread (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=42880). The Flash Development thread that you see here is just that, and should only be for the discussion of creating/modifying games to work with vbProArcade. Any discussion of or support for the hack itself will be conducted in the other thread.

For documentation on how to modify a game to work with vbProArcade, please see the vbProArcade documentation, which will always be contained in this post (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?postid=336834#post336834). I will try and update this post whenever I update the documentation itself.

Before you modify ANY game's source or post it here, you must MAKE SURE that you have the author's permission to modify and redistribute the code, compiled or otherwise.

As games are modified and posted, I will update this post to list them, so that people running vbProArcade may find and install them more easily.

Introduction
------------

vbProArcade is a PHP script designed to provide an interface between the vBulletin Instant Community and Macromedia Flash-produced games. vbProArcade is made freely available via vbulletin.org to licensed vBulletin owners ONLY, and should not be redistributed or modified in any other way without the express written consent of the author.


Installation
------------

There are multiple steps required to making vbProArcade work with your vBulletin installation. They are:

- uploading the vbProArcade files
- uploading the arcade game files
- modifying your SQL database with the vbProArcade tables and settings
- modifying (hacking) the vBulletin PHP code
- installing (and possibly editing) the vbProArcade templates

The majority of these instructions are contained in a separate file (vbproarcade-install.txt). This file is meant as more of an explanaton of vbProArcade's features and how to use them effectively, as well as a revision log and other information from the author.

Note that this is an EXTENSIVE hack and will require some time and effort to get to work correctly. As a word of warning, there have been sites where vbProArcade would not work, for whatever reason. While I hope that your site is not one of them, I cannot guarantee that this will work everywhere. Still, I will make every effort to continually update the code to get it working in as many environments as possible.


Games and How to Modify Them
----------------------------

vbProArcade interfaces with Macromedia Flash games that have been specially modified to work with it. To modify a Flash game to work with vbProArcade, you will need access to the game's source code (usually a .FLA file). Just having the pre-compiled .SWF file will NOT work.

This is the block of code that needs to be added to a Flash Game to make it compatible with vbProArcade:

There are a couple of things to pay attention to here. First, "scorevariable" MUST match whatever you set the score variable to be in the Admin Control Panel in vBulletin. In this case, "scorevariable" would correspond to "$scorevariable" in the CP. Second, "hashoffset" MUST match the hash offset defined for the game in the Admin Control Panel in vBulletin. This value needs to be between 0 and 31, since the MD5 hash is a 32-character string. If these values do not match, you game will always return a Security Violation after exiting.

When you add a game to the arcade, you must give the arcade the HTML code associated with the Flash file, which should look something like this (this is the default code for Tetris):

Note the variables that can be used in this process:

$vpa_gameurl - The Path to the Arcade Games on your Server
$vpa_bburl - The Path to your Forum on your Server
$game - Game's Text Identifier
$gamehash - Game Security Hash (will not return scores correctly without this)
$session[sessionhash] - vBulletin Session Data (should pass this for non-cookied users)
$username - User who is Playing
$highscore - Current High Score for this Game
$bbtitle - Title of your Forums

Not all games will support all of these, but if you are creating (or modifying) a game to work with vbProArcade, you might make use of some of these variables to "spice it up" a bit.

The rest of the code should remain the same from game to game and does not need to be specially modified. If you are wondering about the security features, see the section on security further down in this documentation.

Also note that before modifying any games you find, please make sure that you have the author's permission, *especially* if you intend to redistribute the file after it has been modified.


Templates
---------

vbProArcade is a completely templated-out hack, meaning that it is remarkably easy to change the look of your Arcade without having to edit the PHP code itself. The downside of this is that there are a bunch of templates to install and manage. Here is a list of the templates that come with vbProArcade, and where each one is used:

As it stands, there are 23 templates in use in vbProArcade Beta 2. As the code is optimized further, this number *should* go down; however, as new features are added, new templates may be necessary. I know that maintaining this many is a heavy workload for an administrator, but it seems to be the best way to allow for customization, so I am sticking with it (for now).


Arcade Tables
-------------

There are five tables that make up vbProArcade:

arcadeconfig - Stores the Arcade Configuration
arcadegames - Stores the Arcade Games' Configuration
arcadescoregroups - Defines Groups of Scores (not fully implemented)
arcadescores - Stores the Top Scores for each Game
arcadetopscores - Stores the Scores for each Game

To see the individual layouts of each table, you can execute a "desc tablename;" query from the MySQL command line.



Score Table Structure and Security
----------------------------------

One of the major problems with Beta 1 of vbProArcade was a lack of security. This has been addressed (somewhat) in Beta 2 by a rather large modification of the way scores are stored and handled.

First of all, the arcadescores table (which stores the regular scores themselves) now looks like this:

int(11) score user's score
varchar(70) comment user's comment

When a user chooses to play a game, the database creates an invalid score entry containing that user's name and ID, the current UNIX timestamp, and an MD5 hash of some encrypted value. The hash, along with any other interesting information, is passed into the Flash game.

When a Flash game exits, it redirects the user to the "Game Over" screen, and passes along the hash with the other data. The Arcade then queries the database, looking for the most recent entry for that particular user, checking to see if the game matches, the hash matches, and that the time is greater than the recorded time. If everything checks out, the score is recorded as a valid score, and the user is prompted to enter a comment.

When the user clicks "Submit" on the comment screen, a new, random MD5 hash is generated and stored alongside the score in the database, which is then passed along with the form data, and re-checked against the database. This will prevent users from "brute-forcing" the Arcade to record a new comment for a given score, as was possible in Beta 1.

On top of the MD5 security, the server is recording the entry and exit timestamps of each game, which cannot be altered by user input at all. An astute administrator should be able to determine whether or not a game was completed in a reasonable amount of time or not, thus giving him or her yet another method of weeding out fake scores, should they arise.

Another new feature of the score table is "Score Grouping." Although this is not yet implemented, it will allow the Administrator to define sets of scores for a given time period. This could be used for daily, weekly, or monthly scoreboards, for example, or perhaps for a tournament or some other form of grouping.

Obviously, this system is not foolproof, since a cheater could (for example) still wait the requisite amount of time for a game and use a hex-editor to change memory locations. Still, this is a good start, and should prevent all of the "address bar cheating" that we saw with Beta 1.

Although I certainly *hope* that vbProArcade will work flawlessly on your forums, I am sure that as time goes on people will run across small bugs and problems that need to be corrected. I plan to continue to work on vbProArcade for the foreseeable future, including porting it over to vBulletin v3.0 when it is released to the public.

Give me a break, man.

Not only are the modifications for this hack significantly different from the ones in your original hack, I have continued (and will continue) to give you credit in every source file I've released for vbProArcade, since the very beginning, without any prompting from you or anybody else.

What more do you want?

Unless you actually wrote the vbTetris game, I don't think I've missed crediting you at all. The security and dynamic redirection ActionScript was written by myself. If you did, in fact, write the game, then it's my error, and I will correct it.

The original version of Tetris was pretty rough, as I'm sure you'll remember - it had a lot of extra things that I took out, I redid all of the buttons (remember it there used to be a tacky "Start!" round thing bottom left), changed all of the colours and generally made it look a lot better. I also added the introduction (with $bbtitle and the forum tetris block.)

I know it's not brilliant, and sorry I couldn't make it any better - but I'm pretty useless at flash, and I put a hell of a lot of effort into it. (Although I'm sure to someone better it would have taken them a few minutes.)

I hope so. I have had a lot of people send me emails or PMs with source files or locations of source files containing other potential games. I haven't had much time to look at them but I hope that others will take the initiative to modify some of the stuff that is out there, or -- better yet -- even create some cool games just for the vBulletin community.

Included in the zip is the source (.fla) file ,the executable (.swf) file and a crappy image I made to use in the main arcade screen. I did not modify the game but a member on my forums did. You can use the gold crown to appear in the postbit for it. It's not used in there yet and I didn't feel like making one.

Did that for me as well until I clicked quote on Dark Jim's post and grabbed the query from there, I don't know why it doesn't seem to display properly through the postbit (I tested it like 5 times before quoting and being able to run the query).

alright people...sorry theres something that i cant figure out....the game works on the site...but when the game is over it doesnt direct me the comment page and the users score doesnt show up...anyone know whats up??

now i know the variable within both games is $score however in the proarcade.php the variable seems to be $theScore....so i went in and changed around the variables within the games to follow suit.....but it still doesnt work...any ideas

I found a game that would be a great addition to arcades everywhere (and the death of 56k for that matter, the SWF alone is almost 1 MB, the FLA is over 4 :speechless:.

It's a nice 3D space shooter. Maybe someone can get it to work soon. :)

xxxsaint: I worked out the hexxagon game....and realized its pointless trying to calculate points......the game doesnt recoginze final score, it only recognizes who has higher player one or player two......and this doesnt help our scoreboard.

Which really doesnt matter cuz u really cant get any high points in the game...the highest number of points in the game is however many hexagon spots are available......my advice dont even bother with hexxagon......its a great game, but not what we need.......

oooohhhh....however, if someone were to go inside the game and rewrite the code so that when one of our rubies takes over the computers we get 10 points....if we take multiple at the same time we get bonus points......thats the only system i can think which will work......however the coding is serious, which is why i cant do it right now...(little time)....if anyone wants to take a pick at it, ill be more than happy to help them out........ :-P

The coding for installing simon has some errors in it cos the forums change : D into :D so the code doesnt work, I have attatched the HTML code you should use.

I've been trying to get the frogger clone someone posted earlier to work, without success I might add. I've got it hitting proarcade.php when the game is over, but for some reason I just can't get it to pass the damn score. :p

I realize that the game is pretty simple, only has one level but I'm mainly just doing it to get familliar with adapting games to ProArcade. :)

OK, here is the .fla since I've worked on it...

The appropriate frames to insert the code needed for vbProArcade seem to be 51 and 52.

Frame 51 is the 'You're out of frogs, play again?' and 52 is 'You're ready for Level 2, but I didn't make a level 2... play again?'

I realize that since it's only a 1 level game the need for saving the scores isn't very high, but I'm mainly trying to do it just for the experience of doing it, you know?

Anyway I have the following code in there before the stop(); in both frames:

well guys , I have some sad news to pass on about the simon game . There is no timer at all in that game and all you have to do is get a pencil and paper , and write down the color order that is blinked to you , and click it back in. After the sequence gets really high , it doesn't matter because all you have to do is write down the last color that flashed at the end of your string of text

Example :

I don't understand how this is sad news, this is pretty much inherent to Simon. I agree that a timer would probably be a good idea but even then you could still write a single letter on a piece of paper in time. *shrug*

To say that is inherent to simon , i dont' get that , how is cheating the arcade scoreboard by this method due to a simple cheat like this ' inherent ' . It's sad news to me because I can't stand cheaters...

The cheating problem inherent to Simon Says was the primary reason I never modified it along with the rest of Neave's great games. It just doesn't work well as a ranked game.

As for Hexxagon, somebody would indeed have to add a traditional point-based scoring system to make it work correctly with the arcade.

Installed Hexxagon and working great over at the Candidforums!

I really like this game, it's based on an older DOS shareware game and is a REALLY faithful recreation. I used to spend HOURS playing this with my friends and neighbors. Even though it's not really good for the champions system, it still makes a FUN addition to the arcade!


Jim, can you make the altered .fla available and/or tell me what you had to do to make it work? I tried and tried and all I could ever get it to do was immediately hit proarcade.php on the start of a game, really frustrating and I'm anxious to see how you got it working. :)

Once again, Jim, instead of putting in a 9 for the ID, put in NULL, so that it won't automatically make it 9, instead it'd use the next ID that it can use. ;)

Yea, it's good practice to use NULL in any SQL column that contains an auto incrementing value. Other values may not work correctly in everybody's databases (duplicate entry error in a keyed field).

Hmm like I posted I did not modify the game myself but I'll ask for the fla file. I downloaded Macromedia Flash and will try to improve it so it does not end when you win.

Whats the hash offset for hex? You really should post the query without putting it in a text file, otherwise it gets messed up.

hi all, I am having troubles adding simon and hexagon to vbproarcade beta2 using the admin CP.

it keeps coming back with the following error whenever the game is complete:


"vbProArcade Error: Invalid game name specified (todo: put something pretty here later)"


the values for hexxagon that i am using in the admin cp are as follows:

game identifier: hexxagonFinal
score return variable: $hexxagonscore
game hash offset: 5
html code for game:

problem fixed. I ended up adding it manually via running the following sql statement that futunreal posted (i think he was the one who posted it):

and it works now. Not sure why i couldnt get it working via the admin cp (had no problems with simon says).

one thing that did throw me is that it doesnt add the score unless you fill in/complete the entire board. I sat there testing it for ages trying to figure out why my score wasnt being added :speechless:


anyway, i hope the above helps anyone else who was having simular problems :)

Yes i mean that both games.
Simon Sayz is running great, but Hexxagon are with some bugs.
When i finished a game it dosent add the scores ! :(

with Simon Says and hexxagon, after completing the games it takes me to proarcade.php with an error page, doesn't tell me what it is though. So anyone know why it's not recording scores?

I will add Simon Says and Hexxagon to the first post. I had not added them before because it did not seem that there was a consensus as to whether they worked or not.

As for other games, I too am wondering why they haven't showed up. I was getting emails and PMs every few days for 3 or 4 months with people saying they wanted to modify this or that, or enhance the current ones, but so far it hasn't happened.

Flash pros, where are you? :)

As far as how to modify games, and where to put the code, it really depends completely on the game you are modifying.

You can get some great Flash/ActionScript help from www.flashkit.com

I have a bunch of .swf games from this page on another hack, but it wouldn't work for me so I decided to stick with proarcade.

Also, what I mean in my error is that it doesn't take me to a www.my-board.com/forums/proarcade.php, it takes me to a www.my-board.com/proarcade.php, i think i can fix this by having it directed to the correct proarcade.php, can anyone help me figure out why it's doing this for simon says and hexxagon? Thank you for your help.

Oh, and i've attached those games I was talking about, in case anyone wants to take a stab at converting them to work with proarcade. Peace.

finally found a roulette game to try and modify , I'd love to be able to see someone modify this where it would work off your store points as well! Maybe in the bottom right corner where it has a plus symbol for help we could change that graphic to " cash out " and that would post the score and add the store points ?

A member of mine PMed me with this problem with the game Breakout:



When you get up to lvl 20+ the ball stops breaking the blocks. It just goes right thru them and so you can't finish the level.



Anyone else with the same problem?

Erwin, yeppers. It's not just level 20 though, I believe at one point the levels are random and the ones that are trouble seem to pop up around 15+ levels.

mv540, I had this same problem for the longest time. And I only figured it out yesterday (go figure). Go into your modify games area of the admin cp, go to the hexxagon game, and check the game variables and such. Also, I suggest changing the HTML to the same settings as Breakout or one of the other games (doesn't matter, they're all basically the same). That fixed one problem I had, then check the score variable, and change it to something like, $hexxagonscore

If it still doesn't work I'll take a screenshot for you and then you can see mine and see what's up.

ok i tried what you instructed, i took the HTML code from breakout and set the path to $hexxagonscore...still doesnt record...hmm this is a tricky one....simon says installed flawlessly through my admin cp by selecting add game..this one seems alittle more challenging....

what else would you suggest?

hmmm..... this seems to be a one sided conversation here, so im just gonna scratch this game and move on to installing other games. 7 hours is enough time searching & waiting for answers here. I think i've read this thread about 5 times and i keep getting the same results......ive seen afew posts where people are searching for the same answers as i am yet the only responses they get are "What are you talking about, mines working fine".....followed by dead silence...

im sure its a great game which people put thier time and effort into, but i cant get it to record or keep score for the life of me....the game has been installed as per the instructions in this thread from many different angles and ive also tried many alterations from changing the variable to editing the file name...nothing works......the thing just refuses to keep score...

ive tried everything but shes a no go...

Here's a asteroid game, the fla and the swf files are included in the zip. There's one error with the game though, the ship doesnt explode when it hits something, once that is resolved it'd be a good one for this great hack :)

I modified this game to work, although it's an extremely boring game, it's the easiest one I could find so far (most of these games are just terribly unorganized!)

It'd be easiest to add through the admin cp as previously described.

The hash is 5
The scrore variable is: $wordscore
The HTML can be copied from any of the original games (it can be found in the orginal zip docs)

Okay, for everyone trying to make a game, I know how:

Once you find the place to add the code supplied change
scorevariable = score;
to
gamenamescore = score;
not
scorevariable = gamenamescore;

That'll fix any problems with an empty scoreboard after a gameover... it took me awhile to fix it... Great hack.

I added the game directly through the Admin CP, instead of using a MySQL Query, it goes much faster that way.

Since people are actually using it, I modified word drop again to include more words. The original file only had about 7 words or so. I also included the fla if anyone wants to add more words. It's a very well commented flash file.

I also did not write the game and got it from the same source the user above used.

fla files are changable files, swf's aren't. You edit the .fla file and then save it as a .swf i believe. And you can use Macromedia Flash, or Flash MX, same thing basically.

I have that pong game working now. I shall zip it up later but i can't update the admin section of the general options: 'Use Champions System' .... if i click yes it stays 'NO' This has nothing to do with that pong game but it began when i moved the whole forum to the directorie /forum. Maybe a permission thing?

NuclioN I have to ask you to remove the Pong game. This game was made by a developer on my forums and was not meant to be submitted here, at least not without my permission first. I may decide to release it but not before putting in a link to my site. I don't mind sharing the other games but this one was made from scratch.

The roulettegame is great ofcourse but it would crunch all your other games when it can communicate with the store to either increase the points by winning or decrease them by losing.

At this moment it add's the points nice into the scoresection with a script in flash but i bet that it can do the same with the storep points. I hope someone can implement this function. :)

Yes I did not make the game myself. A member of my staff, a "developer" made it. The reason I share the other games is because they are not made by him but just made compatitable. Someone is going to do it sooner or later anyway. I'll discuss if I release the pong game too. I would put a link to my site at the startup or end screen though in return. I don't plan on releasing every future game though.

Edit: First the Pong game will be a little bit improved first. Then we'll see.

No, it isn't added to the default breakout. The game identifier is what determains where it goes, and that has to be different than the default breakout.
