Can I use this to stop bots on posting on the forums as guests?

Best not to allow guests to post in the first place. This will not stop bots from posting as a guest as it only stops them from registering

Hi All,

I just installed this great looking mod on our forum three days ago as we have started to have the odd spammer show up.

A friend tried to register last night and she was denied registration.

"Spam-O-Matic Tagged username - Sarah - Spammer Found and rejected."

I have checked the stopforumspam database and there are loads of entry's for the name Sarah.

I know I can turn off the username check but I think it's a good idea. Am I doing something wrong? Surly a user with the name Sarah should be able to register?

We are on the latest 4.1.6 VB

Thanks for any assistance

I have the name part disabled and it works fine as a bot is not just checked on there name when registering

swiftor 26 Sep 2011 21:04

So this is preventing some legit users from signing up - is there a way I can whitelist particular IP's?

We have a special guest section for people who are having issues with the forums. But a lot of bots post there as well, hence the question.

most bots post links, should limit the # of url links the guest group can post.

Mark spammer in blog or profile?

Greetings.

Congrats on a great tool. A couple of observations:

1) Spammers are getting smarter and coming in after a failed attempt from another IP address. If you look at our logs:

http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/attac...1&d=1317125596

you will see a couple of users that tried to get in and failed with a spammer IP address. They then connect via a different IP address that isn't YET flagged in the system and can get in. (geraldevens and JohnAdams even used the same IP address 112.206.138.240) I would think that once a user attempts to get in via a failed IP address, the email address they attempted to connect with would be added to the database so that any future attempts would be prevented. (as well as adding IP addresses from bad email addresses) If when geraldevens tried a second time, the system knew he was a spammer, the IP address of his second attempt (112.206.138.240) would have been logged as well. Not only would he have not made it in, but JohnAdams would not have made it in either.

2) Is there a way to manage/report spammers from a user profile? From the documentation it looks like the only way to report a spammer is through the forum post moderation tools. What about spam that post in a Blog and not a forum? How do I mark that user as a spammer? (sorry if it's been answered, but I couldn't find any insights in the 80+ pages of thread) Having a tool in the user profile to mark them as a spammer would be useful. We want to contribute to the KB of spammers on the StopForumSpam site.

Anyway, thanks for building this tool. A site I help admin has been targeted by spammers and this tool is helping fight those attacks. (it would even be better if the previously mentioned items were incorporated into the product) :)

Cheers!

flag there user name or email to http://www.stopforumspam.com

rEd86 27 Sep 2011 17:32

I did that for the three that passed but it's going to be hard to keep it up without a quick way to do so from the offending user profile or blog post.

Apparently for that spammer, only their first IP had been flagged so far, neither their username or email or new IP had been caught yet so far. This is the case of a new spammer, and will occasionally happen.
There used to be a feature of reporting a user from inside the AdminCP, it that was taken out with the latest version, but has been promised to us again in the next.

Patience is a virtue around here...sometimes mods don't get updated for a long while :(

But when the system checked, we sent all three parameters to be verified, right? (username, email address & IP Address) I would think that if one of those parameters set off a spam flag, then the others would be added to the database. So in this example, when geraldevans hit us from a spammer ip address (64.20.45.178) then their email address would be considered a spammer and added to the system. (or at least a higher probability of a spammer)

The fact that we submitted their name/email from a second IP address within 5 minutes should have confirmed that was the case.

Are there fall-outs that I am not aware of as to why one wouldn't want to be aggressive like this?

It doesn't auto-flag spammers, it just compares them to what's already in the database. In order to add more information to the SFS database it must be when you mark them as a confirmed spammer. But right now it just checks to see if something is listed in the DB then if so marks them as failed, it doesn't submit any more information to SFS.
Perhaps its something the devs would consider.

Getting 500 error on post
by LCManager
30 Sep 2011 20:29

Hello,

I installed spam-o-matic last night and discovered when I attempt to post something or reply to a post I get

The website encountered an error while retrieving http://www.(mydomain).com/forums/new...ostthread&f=21. It may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly.

500 (Internal Server Error)

I also get a pop up saying something like are you sure you want to leave this page.

As soon as I disable it everything's back to normal.

Using v4.1.6 and get same thing on Mozilla, Chrome, and IE.

Any help would be appreciated.

If by grayed out, you mean there's nothing under: Spam-O-Matic Statistics, that's because you haven't had it installed long enough to list any stats there. Once it starts blocking spammers, you'll start seeing the stats

It doesn't appear in Admincp / Settings /

Uninstall the mod entirely. Delete any uploaded files you did. Then reinstall and reupload everything, with paying special attention to all install instructions and file locations.

You can view the details through your Admincp under Statistics & Logs/GlowHost - Spam-O-Matic logs

No members should be able to view through your admincp unless you have given them admin access permissions.

popular 20 Oct 2011 19:27

Is there a way to limit this mod to only administrators?

popular 22 Oct 2011 00:28

Just wanted to clarify further what I meant. I only want administrators to be able to use the User Action Function where you can either Ban/Remove Users including threads, posts, pms, etc. Is it possible to do this? Is there no way to set which MODs I want to have this function available for?

Megaboost 22 Oct 2011 01:04

If you are worried about your members adding other members to the list then make sure you protect the members groups from within the glowhost settings.

Since I've Installed it and signed up to both akismet.com and StopForumSpam.com It's caught every bad registration so far so I would definately recommend you sign up for both Keys and then enter them into your glowhost settings.

popular 22 Oct 2011 02:14

I feel uncomfortable giving all mods the ability to physically delete posts/threads/pms with just one click. So there isn't a way to set this to Admin use only?

Yes but that gives me all the detailed info. I would have to go through it manually and count up each one for a summary. If I turn it on, It will publish the stats to my Board Statistics section that is open for public view but I don't want to advertise how many I have stopped to the public, just to my self.

I guess I can just manually count it, just dont understand why there is only a public summary page and not a summary page in the admin center.

Almost every day I have a post that I cannot approve no matter what. It has to be physically removed. Why does this keep happening.

baileyjojoms 26 Oct 2011 20:02

I didn't see any "send good infor about this user to spammers lists" button anywhere in this addon.

I never did this, but I still have the database backup. Is there anyway to insert the threads and posts from that user back into the database? Maybe use the new user ID for the member?

It's about 10,000 posts and some of the threads were very good topics.

No but I do have a problem where no matter what "Auto-Moderation: URL Count" is set to IE I've got it set to 5, it still adds new users to the moderation cue even if they only post 1 link.

Has anyone tried installing this fresh on 4.1.7?

I've just set up a test instance for 4.1.7 and all my other products work so far, but this one gives the following when I try and import the xml file (after having uploaded the relevant folders):

EDIT: I get the same error for the limited guest viewing product. I can't see anything wrong though - I have MyISAM as my default storage engine (I actually don't have InnoDB at all). I'm off to check the manual (mysql version 5.5.16), but if anyone has any ideas in the mean time, please post away.

EDIT2: The 5.0 manual suggests TYPE is deprecated and it should say ENGINE, but that TYPE is supported. There is no mention of TYPE in the 5.5 manual.

Im running it on 4.1.7 for quite sometime now and it's a wonderful hack. The only thing which bothers me is that it sometimes stops genuine people from registering, only because the username they try to register is flagged :(

tonyDD 04 Nov 2011 16:14

Hi

I wonder if anyone would be kind enough to help.
I have been handed our companies forum to look after and im stuck trying to install this as im a complete newb.

I have downloaded but i cant seem to upload to vbulletin 4.17. I point to the cpnav_glowhostspamomatic.xml and vbulletin reports inavlid file specified. I have tried to follow the instructions in the zip but not sure where to put the other files using filezilla as the forum was installed by global gold and again im a useless newb.

Any help would be superb and help me save a few hours of my day on spam.

regards and thanks

Strange, the same happened to me when upgrading from 4.1.6 to 4.1.7, but I had an outdated [GlowHost] Spam-O-Matic, I updated it and everything fine.

Now from 4.1.7 to 4.1.7 patch 2, the same, blank pages and alerts when trying to post, reply, erase a message, etc...

So definitely there's something.

FannBlade 06 Nov 2011 15:41

I too have upgrade to latest patch and all works fine on my end. Good thing I'm not sure how I would live without it.

I upgraded from vbulletin suite 4.1.4 to 4.1.7 PL2 yesterday, no issues whatsoever related to spam-o-matic / blank pages, etc...

the annoying "are you sure you want to leave" prompt is something I experienced in 4.1.4, and fixed it/disabled it using a suggestion here:

tonyDD 07 Nov 2011 12:50

o.k sorted the query prob, updated config php with
$config['SpecialUsers']['canrunqueries'] = 'x';

...with x being your userid number

tonyDD 07 Nov 2011 12:53

DELETE FROM `glowhostspamomatic_remotecache` WHERE (`data`='put in user name here')

I'm getting the following error when you try to comment or make a post in the forum after installing this mod, I don't want to uninstall either:

Warning: require_once(includes/functions_ghsom.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in [path]/includes/class_dm_threadpost.php(761) : eval()'d code on line 17

Fatal error: require_once() [function.require]: Failed opening required 'includes/functions_ghsom.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/stufftos/public_html/forums/includes/class_dm_threadpost.php(761) : eval()'d code on line 17

Please help.

yes just put it in that box change the "put in user name here" with the user name you want to remove from the list then click continue

Request: When banning a user, allow us to report them. I have many members who sign up just to link to their home page, but make no posts. Therefore, I cannot select their posts as spam and then report/ban them.

Hi my friends....

Any one knows how can I report StopForumSpam a spammer ONCE he is allready put in the Spammers group?

I'll try to explain better:

I detect a spammer in the same moment is is registering, so there is no ONE post from him. Inmediatly, I change the users group to Spammers (for example).

Is there any option in GlosHost Spam-O-Matic to report this users as spammer to the StopForumSpam database? (other than entering the users data directly in the StopForumSpam site database, obviously...)

:)

Thanx a lot to all.

not sure why you are trying to stop spammers trying to get in by yourself cause this is what this mod does it is automatic and the few that get in you go to your thread tools and go through process which report it to stop forum spam ....this mod is the best there is imo this has saved me and my staff at my site much time ....
