Hi,

I am running vb3.5.3 and have the problem of empty Return Path which has popped up before in this thread. I am using the spool file method and my bounce emails are being collected correctly in the bouce mailbox. However, all mails end up with an empty Return-Path setting:

Block Disabled:      (Update License Status)
Suspended or Unlicensed Members Cannot View Code.

Even if manually modify the Return-Path value in the mailbox file, the vbouncer Stats still does not pick up these emails.

Any idea what is going wrong? I am using postfix as mail system by the way.

Regards,

Pat.

What does the diagnoastics results show? Make sure you enter the bouncer email in the settings. If you use smtp, switch to PHP and see if this makes a difference.

patvdv 27 Jan 2006 10:45

Hi Tamarian,

The diagnostics screen show all PASSED except for the IMAP/POP settings which I do intend to use. The bouncer email address is filled in. I am also using PHP's mail() function rather than SMTP.

Regards,

Pat.

Just wanted to say everything worked just fine for me... 3.5.3 windows installation with remote POP mailbox. No hiccups at all! Fantastic!

Make sure the plugin is active. When testing, make sure to test with a thread notification, and inspect the header.

guvner 29 Jan 2006 07:38

Hi tamarian - great idea, nice hack and thanks for the effort !

Mine's installed on 3.5 (patched to 3.52) and all seems fine - but for some reason I now get a parse error when emails are sent:

Parse error: parse error, unexpected '<' in /home/XXXXX/public_html/community/includes/class_mail.php(254) : eval()'d code on line 10

The emails go through OK - I'm using IMAP/POP and get green lights on the diagnostics:

vbouncer.inc file exists Passed
vbouncer.inc file is readable Passed
Your PHP installation supports IMAP/POP Passed
Your IMAP/POP settings can connect Passed

If I disable the plugin the error stops - any ideas?

Thanks - Mike :)

I run PLESK and can't get this to work. I get:

Warning: imap_close(): supplied argument is not a valid imap resource in /includes/cron/vbouncer-collect.php on line 162

This sounds like a cool hack and much needed on my site. Has this been verified for vb 3.5.3 or will it be updated to work on that version?

I just installed it on my 3.5.3 and it seems to run perfectly, now I'm just waiting to see some ++++ing rats fall into the trap :)

DannyITR 16 Feb 2006 15:16

I get 50-100 bounced subscription emails per day now that I have entered a correct webmaster email.

I will try and install this hack but I'n only a novice. The instructions look fairly simple (extracting files, running installer, uploading plugin, creating a blank text file (what is a spool file?) because I use qmail. I'm not sure about the task part...hopefully it can be done by the admincp?

Anything I should watch out for?

This is a simple add-on, I'm a complete idiot at php and I made it run in minuttes on a qmail (Look a few post earlier for a little mod to the default script about pop3 access) And made it connect thrugh pop3 and it's working fine for me.

My hosting provide run on plesk / unix freebsd 4.9 whit qmail. And yes this is simple and easy to setup. Go and enjoy the your forum and not your mailbox after this mod :)

when I try to import the xml file it is telling me it is an invalid file. What am I doing wrong?

DannyITR 21 Feb 2006 17:39

Its not working. The bounced email keep getting sent to my old address. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

I have Qmail and I followed the exact steps outlined in post #2 (remmeber I'm a dummy so if you left out something I didn't do it).

I made an email account and put in the login info into the vbouncer settings (not in the post 1 installation instructions btw).

My forums are on a different server and accessed with a subdomain. Could this be an issue? My server admin wanted to setup an email called [email protected] but we couldn't get EV1 Servers to give us the correct mx or something so he told me jsut to use [email protected] and it woudl work.

I'm lost and I might have to punch my comp if I get another bounced email. :disappointed:

if your mail server is located on another server than vBulletin, then you have to use the IMAP method, to retreive the emails through POP.

to make sure it's working, run the diagnostics, and bounce an email from a thread notification email, and check the headers of that email.

ok in the vbouncer settings where it says IMAP/POP connection I entered this:

{mail.montrealracing.com:110/pop3}INBOX

Then just below I entered the normal login info for my email account for the login and pw and it still didn't work. The email gets sent to my old addy.

If this isn't how you setup IMAP/POP then can I have a detailed explanation on how to do it? I logged in as a test user to bounce the email and he didn't recieve a PM either and I have it set to 1 infraction in the settings.

ok I just realized that I never installled and activated the plugin. Man I'm stupid.

I did a test and the bounced emails stopped however the test user I used didn't recieve a PM telling him to change his email and he is still subscribed to threads.

How do I test the program? I have limits set to one offence only.

Check the statistics, to see if they were caught. Then check the cron times when the task will be run, or run it from the cron manager.

The attached file should be copied to the includes/xml directory.

The file that needs importing in step 4 is the plugin xml file included in the package.

hmm:

I just hooked it up in outlook and I was able to access it fine. I had 500 emails to download. Why wont vbouncer do this?

DannyITR 07 Mar 2006 18:01

I'm sure the problem lies here:

Leave empty if your prefer using the file method below. This setting allows you to define an IMAP or POP connection for vBouncer to access the bounced emails account for processing. Here are a few examples, replace the domain name with your own:
For local IMAP: {localhost:143}INBOX
For local POP: {localhost:110/pop3}INBOX
For remote POP: {myisp.com:110/pop3}INBOX

I have this in my box but I have no idea if its correct.

{mail.montrealracing.com:110/pop3}INBOX

Why is there no uninstall option anyway?

but the connect still fails.

DannyITR 11 Mar 2006 18:03

tamarian 12 Mar 2006 00:49

Danny, you must use your email's connection information. 127.0 IP may not be the right one, if you say you use an external email server.

DannyITR 13 Mar 2006 13:37

Hey looks like its working!

https://www.vbulletin.org/forum/external/2006/03/14.jpg

DannyITR 15 Mar 2006 21:08

Apparently if I send a user a normal email using the admincp and it bounces then it is not caught by vbouncer. I was going to use it as a way of getting anyone with a faulty email to change it.

BabyU 24 Mar 2006 21:27

IS there a way of catching bouncing emails that were sent via admincp? I have about 700 sitting in my inbox right now and I'm really not looking forward to taking care of them manually. Is there a similar hack that would support these bounces as well?

tamarian 26 Mar 2006 11:22

The plugin manager is part of vB's adminCP, use the plugin import menu option, and import the file located in the import directory of the zip file.

vBulletin's cron is a simulated cron. So your vB is running scheduled tasks, this is just like other vB scheduled tasks.

In vB 3.6 there has been a chang in the "phrase" & "phrasetype" tables. The previous primary key "phrasetypeid" is remove. Only "fieldname" is now serving to identify the phrasetype (or group).

Attached is a modified installer that will work on 3.6 (only tested install).

Will post later if vBouncer itself works on vB3.6 Beta1

PS Maybe this can easily turned into a product, so there will not be this kind of problems with future releases.

Edit: Seems to work on 3.6 Beta 1

webgroup 04 Jul 2006 16:34

I have installed the vbouncer and all seems ok, but it never collects any emails, and I know the emails are going to the correct inbox.

Any help?

Antiblank 20 Jul 2006 08:17

So I got vBouncer installed. It's connecting to my mailbox and when it finds emails in there it will delete them. I tried changing a test account on my boards to contain a bad email address. I triggered emails to that account using buddy adding, pm's, emailing, etc. Since the email did not exsist they ended up inside of the [email protected] address.

Without opening the email, I ran the vBouncer Collect cron, the email vanished and this appeared in my cron log:

vBouncer Collect 01:07, 20th Jul 2006 Status:
Processed 1 emails No bounced emails found.

But whenever I look at the vBouncer Stats section it always appears as:

Quick Stats
Total bounced emails currently logged
Top bouncer [] - -
Last run with results 18:00, 31st Dec 1969

All blank. Any ideas?

Antiblank 26 Jul 2006 06:34

6 days with no reply :( No one have an idea here?

tamarian 27 Jul 2006 12:09

Antiblank, if no bounced emails are found, the stats will be blank. That's normal. If you're asking why there are no bounced emails, you need to check the diagnostics and error messages, and provide some details.

Antiblank 28 Jul 2006 10:58

Well as I stated I intentionally created a bad email address for a test user. Then triggered some emails to be sent to it. The email isn't found so a the message ends back up in my return-path mailbox. Vbouncer connects, attempts the collection, processes the one email it found. But says no bounced emails. Then deletes the email from the box.

Forgive me if I'm wrong but wouldn't this constitue as an email that vBouncer should be triggered off of.

As for my diagnostics:

vBouncer sender email
Test Result
Valid vBouncer email account (subscriber_notify@********.com) Passed
vBouncer email account (subscriber_notify@********.com) differs from webmaster account Passed

vBouncer Spool File Diagnostics (ignore if using IMAP/POP)
Test Result
vBouncer email spool file () exists Failed
vBouncer email spool file () is writable Failed
vBouncer email spool file () is readable Failed

vBouncer pattern config file diagnostics
Test Result
vbouncer.inc file exists Passed
vbouncer.inc file is readable Passed

vBouncer IMAP/POP Diagnostics (ignore if not using IMAP/POP)
Test Result
Your PHP installation supports IMAP/POP Passed
Your IMAP/POP settings can connect Passed

As for my Cron Logs for example:

vBouncer Collect 04:02, 27th Jul 2006 Status:
Processed 2 emails No bounced emails found.

I am using IMAP and the connection, reading and deleting of the emails is functioning. There is absoulty no reason any email should be entering this box outside of the return-path function added to the emails since I installed vBouncer.

Anything else you need to see? Thanks.

Scott MacVicar 28 Jul 2006 15:47

Just to inform you that this hack is producing invalid Mail headers.

$headers = preg_replace('/Return-Path.*/', 'Return-Path: ' . $vbulletin->options['vbouncer_spool_account'], $headers, 1);

That will match up to the \r and replace it, the end result is that the header has \n instead of \r\n.

If you could fix this it would be awesome, if you can't or aren't around any more i'll speak to Marco about manually updating your hack for you.

This affects Qmail installs and potentially the SMTP mail sender.

Quick Fix, i think but haven't tested is adding $

$headers = preg_replace('/Return-Path.*$/', 'Return-Path: ' . $vbulletin->options['vbouncer_spool_account'], $headers, 1);

Perhaps its interesting for the FAQ ...

Wow thanks for this bit of info. Using an externail mailserver - this info saved me after many failed attempts :)

Is it fit for vb 3.6.1? Cos I used it on 3.5.4 and it was very good :)

Attached is a modified installer that will work on 3.6 (only tested install).

Will post later if vBouncer itself works on vB3.6 Beta1

PS Maybe this can easily turned into a product, so there will not be this kind of problems with future releases.

Edit: Seems to work on 3.6 Beta 1

any update word on this ?

I hope so :(

recently cpanel made some changes to its mail data store, where instead of using single inbox file. it uses maildir format, which has cur, new, and tmp folder. In this case, does it work?

Thanks to the poster of this php to make vbouncer work under vb 3.6.1.

I have collected his script with the original script, for ease of use to the unexspiriense users of vb. I'll hope you all understand my motive.

I with this I'll say it is working with Vbulletin 3.6.1 updated

Nice! Very nice, thanks!

But beta. Why isn't there a real version :)?

GNDI 28 Sep 2006 18:12

ask Tamarian

Does anyone know what he means by the :

6. If you are using vB's SMTP email option, make sure to also enable the "-f" option.

Becuase i really need to know about that badly.

Eagle Creek 04 Oct 2006 22:37

You can find that setting at your e-mail options (vboptions in your ACP).

The F parameter can prevent rare cases when E-mails aren't being send.

pspcrazy 04 Oct 2006 23:17

Thanks, i was wondering if i used the vb php call instead of the smtp should i leave it as is?

bulbasnore 17 Oct 2006 04:11

Have this running in 3.5.4.

It collects the bounces, does the stats, but NEVER logs anything for the cleanup action nor does it actually change anything for the users who should be cleaned up!

Any suggestions to fix this 'inaction problem'?

Yes, I've set it to automode ;=)

UPDATE: OK, despite the fact my forum USES the smtp server, I had to remove -f to make it work.

NEXT QUESTION: Suggestion - how to make it unsub the user from PM notification emails?

well, it's working, but not 100% fake and not working address still comes to your inbox, that was not the issue on earlier versions of VB with vbouncer

For me it's important that if a user's e-mail address has bounced for a certain amount of times (so basically when the conclusion may be drawn that the e-mail address no longer exists), the user will be moved to another usergroup, or deleted for all I care. I have too many members to keep it all up-to-date manually, and besides I wouldn't know how to figure out to keep track of how many times an e-mail address has bounced. There is just no way to do this manually, and there are too many users that register with a hotmail account for example that no longer exists after a couple of months.

Does vBouncer still do in 3.6.2 what I want it to do? I didn't totally understand what you said in your post. If fake and not working e-mail addresses would still reach my inbox, then what does this script do??

GNDI 30 Oct 2006 17:46

It do count the number of bounced mails, but it don't deleted them :( And it doesn't rewrite the send mail address from your system as supposed

That makes it pretty much useless for 3.6.2, doesn't it? I mean, I can count the bounced emails myself

Does it still do this: 'It then issues a PM warning, and when the unsubscribe threshold is met, it will will unsubscribe them for all threads, and sets them to the "no email" subscription level.'??

Because if it moves the bouncing e-mail addresses to a seperate usergroup (I'm assuming that this happens automatically after an x amount of bounces), then I can remove all the users from that usergroup once in a while. That way I would receive less bouncing e-mails and it would reduce server load.
