Active Users cannot login
by CarolSEL

Random active users are unable to successfully login. Attempts return a message saying they are not logged in or don't have permission to access that page. Using different browsers sometimes helps, but while some can only log in from Chrome (or whatever), others using the same browser cannot. Devices can be anything from phone to PC. Nothing in their profile seems to be in conflict. Clearing cache doesn't solve the problem. No error messages are reported from the server.

We're getting a fairly large influx of new members, but are not seeing them online. And long-time members find they suddenly cannot access us. We've lost some valuable members because of this issue.

Any ideas of where to look for a problem?

Are your cookie settings properly setup in the AdminCP under settings?

CarolSEL 16 Aug 2017 16:51

These are the settings:

Session Timeout: 2000
Path to save cookies: /
Cookie domain: .catholicforum.com
GZIP HTML output: Yes
GZIP Compression level: 1
Add Standard HTTP Headers: No
Add No-Cache HTTP Headers: No
Remove Redirection Message Pages: Yes

That seems fine, have you tried disabling all of your plugins/hooks?

Seven Skins 16 Aug 2017 23:29

You can try changing the cookie domain to "blank" in settings

And edit the config.php files cookie prefix line. Keep this cookie prefix short and only letter and numbers.

Quote:

$config['Misc']['cookieprefix'] = 'xxx';

PS. This edit in the config.php file will log out everyone from site and they will have to login again.

.

Thanks. I'll try that and find out if it works.

Nope...not working.

Is there something else I can try?

Disabled via Settings/Options. Is that sufficient, or do I need to manually disable everything at Plugin Manager?

We're also hearing from members that some can login but not post.

Dave 21 Aug 2017 20:06

You can disable all hooks by doing https://www.vbulletin.com/forum/foru...ystem-globally

This might not be something we can help you with from our position, you may need to get premium support at vbulletin.com (http://www.vbulletin.com/en/vb4-add-ons/) or find someone that can help you out.

CarolSEL 22 Aug 2017 11:05

I made the change to config.php. All hooks/plugins are disabled. I've also asked the members known to have a problem to check and report the bookmarked URL they are using.

After disabling hooks, one member (who had been able to login but not post) can now post.

Next step should be disable all the plugin via adminCP.
Undo the config.php edit.

Enable one plugin at a time (via adminCP) and test the forums, the plugin causes the problem after enabling it, is the culprit.

Thanks. Plugins are disabled via ACP (and most were disabled individually from plugin Mgr.). However, the problem is not solved for the majority who have a problem, which is that they cannot log in. So I don't see what re-enabling plugins will do.

I went back through email and PMs and it looks as if this might have started when we installed Glow Host (back on v. 4.2.2). That's been disabled for months, but could it have caused a change in code someplace?

Seven Skins 23 Aug 2017 12:49

If glowhost is causing issue, uninstall it, remove the files belonging to this hack. There should be only 3 files.

PS. Do make a backup of your DB before making major changes to the forums.

Sorry to be so long in responding. Uninstalling Glowhost seems to have solved the problem. Thanks so much!
