Im not sure if this is still supported, but i have had a ton of user registrations. I changed the security questions & they still get through. I installed this mod and they still get through.
My only way to put a temporary hold on this was to moderate new members.
Can someone help me to find out why this is not stopping registrations?

Can the Spam-O-Matic - Spam also be used on vBulletin™ Version 5.0.5? I've installed it on test version of my forum but I think because it's a stand-alone environment so the API key doesn't work, I can't find it in the moderation pannel or statistics.

I seriously doubt it would work in vB5, as it is totally different.

Will try it tomorrow to see if it works on vb5 (hope it does)

I know this mod is all about preventing spam from registering, but what about stopping them even getting to your forum? I have hundreds of registration attempts every hour and it's making my forum REALLY slow. How can we stop them even getting to the forum?

On the server level i would set up Fail2Ban. This will ban ips for a time limit you set when they attack certain ports. if the same ip keeps getting banned you can set it to ban them permanently.

I use zbblock atm. Do you require a VPS or Dedi server for Fail2Ban?

The details are filled up, then you're taken to the page: example.com/forum/register.php?do=addmember but it's blank and error 500 comes up.

When I disabled it, registration went back to normal.

What is the error from your server error logs? If you don't know where these are at, ask your host. :)

I noticed that when using the Newbies manager feature, if a user that is no longer a newbie changes their email address, after the user confirms their new email address, the plugin will re-flag and move the user to the newbie usergroup until they post again. I made a small change to the plugin 'GlowHost - Spam-O-Matic: Activation Post-Fix'. There might be a better way to do it, but I thought I'd bring light to this.

I've been using this for a while and had noticed a lot of suspicious registrations that don't post.

I've just tested and now if I try to register no email confirmation is needed.

I'm sure this did work when I first installed it was something changed?

There is no predefined class for that. You will have to create your own and wrap it around the text.

I'm seeing that many username are denied to be registered and are blocked with a screen that say "Stop forum spam"

I try to register with these usernames "Ray" and "Ricky" and both of them are blocked, but if I add some symbols after the username chose (for example Ricky3tt) it work.

I do not use nor recommend using the username filter.

But I have disabled the username filter, but look that is still working.

That is because the usernames that were blocked before are now in your database remove the xml only and reinstall it again to replace the default tables in mysql

Is there a way to get rid of the "Thank you for posting! Your post will not be visible until a moderator has approved it for posting." pop-up message when a post is made with a blacklisted keyword? Spammers that get through and see this message will just keep posting the same post again and again when they notice that their post is not seen.

Is there a way to allow the user who posted the message to see their post, letting them think that their spam is visible to everybody when in actuality it's moderated for moderators to either approve or delete?

Make a new group and put new users in this group you can set up the settings so new members will auto go into the new group and change the settings so the new members are moderated

I have a super mod who can't see spamomatic in the list of moderate tools? Why would that be? All moderaters should be able to see it. I'm a admin and I can see it just fine. Is there any rights that would prevent that?

In attempting to update my vbulletin 4.2.2 site I have managed to inadvertently get both my Admin and personal user permanently banned and apparently Glow-Host is the cause; my IP is what is being banned.

I cannot access the Admin control panel but do have access to the forum database and site files. In searching the database I've been unable to locate a "fix" for the ban. I'd appreciate some help in clearing this problem.

Ok lets do this, disable plugins via the includes/config.php file.

To do that open your includes/config.php file and below <?php add the following.

Login to phpmyadmin and remove your ip from the userban table also check user table incase your group id has been changed to the banned group

The userban table is empty and the group IDs for both the Admin and my personal user are correct (userID for a banned user is 8) In examining the contents of the user table entries for both Admin and my personal user the only "odd" or "out of the ordinary" table entry appears to be "showvbcode" which, for all other users, contains a "0" entry and for both Admin and my personal user contains "2". I don't know what the significance of the table entry is and I haven't done a trial and error to check to see if changing the entry clears the issue yet (I just discovered it as I was typing this).

in user table showvbcode it should be 2. It might of banned your account on a custom plugin as I dont know what you have go over all tables to see if you can find it. But it could be just an ip ban and not an account ban depends on your plugins. If you want I could login to your account and fix the problem if you want pm me the info

Thank you for the offer, Force. At this point I've tried the edit to the config.php file and can confirm that Glowhost is no longer active. The two users are not banned (at least not in the database), there are no IP bans (I've never banned an IP although I do ban ranges of IPs in a .htacess file -- and yes, I checked that too) and I looked in the datastore table to confirm that my IP is not banned there, either.

When I attempt to access the control panel I get a "welcome, thanks for logging in" message and then the login page reloads. I had a friend (several minutes ago) try to access the same page with the Admin name and password from an entirely different IP address with the same result.

At this stage I'm thinking that the issue is not Glowhost related and I'm going to do a upgrade of the software and hope the issue is resolved that way. I'm otherwise out of ideas.

Did you install anything else apart from this plugin before this problem. Also, when you updated to 4.2.2 did you put the fix into your config as this can cause problems if not done the best thing you can do is disable all plugins via config use notepad++ to edit the config

No, I hadn't added any plugins prior to this issue arising. And yes, I did add that define line in my config.php file to disable all plugins, so hopefully all will go well (crosses fingers).

If you still have no luck,you might try uploading tools.php to the admincp folder and then do "Update the forum and usergroup cache".

Presently I am running vBulletin 4.2.2 for my forum and am a strong advocate for the use of Spam O Matic which has reduced our moderator work load in eliminating spammers. Frankly we cannot be without it

We are now considering a conversion to vBulletin 5 and were made aware that plug ins will not transfer across in the conversion. We were also made aware that the present version of Spam O Matic will not function on vBulletin 5. Is this true and if so can anyone tell me if there will be a version of Spam O Matic which functions on VB5

The bolded represents the biggest mistake you can ever make. Surely you must have some really compelling reason.

And no, any vB addon that uses hooks won't work in v5, and nobody's interested in coding anything for that platform.

Which by the way I would never use or recommend SoM. It is too invasive, and blocks far too many legitimate people - admins included.

I resolved my problem by deleting my entire site, replacing my database with a several week-old backup (our site isn't real busy so losing a few posts isn't really a big deal), and reinstalling 4.2.2 and then updating to patch level 4.

The problem persisted and turned out to be based on a poorly structured ModSecurity rule implemented as a security issue by our host. So, bottom line, I was chasing my tail. GlowHost wasn't the source of the problem at all.

Hope this helps someone else; my problem is solved (until another undisclosed edit to Modsecurity raises its ugly head at my expense, LOL).

You should need to change nothing. On Cloudflare change the setting so that cloudflare passes on the origin IP to you instead of passing you their IP. Once that's done you don't need to make any changes to your site.

In my admincp I dont see any "GlowHost - Spam-O-Matic Logs" in "Admincp > Statistics and Logs", until I change in file cpnav_glowhostspamomatic.xml the string product="glowhostspamomatic" to product="vbulletin" or to other string with name of any of installed products in my forum, except glowhostspamomatic. I Dont understand, why I get the Issue. May be it was some SQL problems while installing the module - I don't know.

You need to set your self as superadmin from the config

You change that in the /includes/config.php file you uploaded to your site. You'll need your user id # so first go into your admin control panel and search for your name. Your user id # is on the top, make note of it.

Then open your /includes/config.php in a text editor that is NOT word and search for "superadmin". Then enter your user id in the spot for it and upload the file back to /includes/config.php

When you log into cloudflare go to your dns settings and make sure that the icon on the right has the arrow going through the cloud (arrow should be orange) and not the grey arrow going over the cloud.

T2VSonya is looking for the location in cloudflare setting to make a change, it isn't a vbulletin setting.

They were asking as well about the Spam O Matic logs they could not see them, adding themselves to the config will allow them to see it

Others were but not T2VSonya. Cloudflare by default does not pass on the origin IP address to the server, at least not in the usual way, and everyone's IP will default to looking like they are coming from a cloudflare server. Cloudflare was suggesting making changes to the plugin to accommodate that, while I suggested changing the cloudflare setting to allow the IP addresses to be passed through.

I was stuck in vb3 for years but now that I've upgraded to vb5 over all I am glad I made the move.

Although actually - it might be that this is auto implemented in vb5, because on the control panel / spam management there is a place to input both one's Anti-Spam Akismet Content Key, and Stop Forum Spam API Key.

On the other hand, it's great to see anyone who enjoys vB5. It's really rare sight. Actually, he's the first one who said something positive about vB5 (at least first one I saw).

Thought I'd give this a try, but once installed and enabled, registered users are unable to post or reply to threads. Once you hit the reply button, the page goes blank.
Tried using different usergroup ids as well as leaving the field blank (instructions are not clear what this is supposed to do anyway). This was the only plugin running.

I did not have problems posting as an admin but my client had many problems posting. She almost pulled the plug yesterday.
Spent the whole afternoon trying to find out what anti spam I can install that will work and not give me errors.

I have been using this mod since it's first release. I have it on my 4.2.2 PL4 site and have no issues with it.

Maybe you have some settings set wrong or maybe your hosting company has something on their servers causing your issue.

I'm on version 4.2.3 using the default vb desktop style and the vb4 mobile style. I wonder if the problem is related to VBSEO being installed. That'd be just what I need... *grumble*.

BTW, the issue i'm having is the registration of new users.

I believe 4.2.3 is still in beta [buggy]. Also VBSEO went tits up awhile back and it's no longer being updated.

Are you still using group 2 for registration in your setup setting?

Turned out it was the addthis.com follow and share buttons causing the issue. The mobile keyboards would close without warning.

I added an exception on their backend for register.php* and there are no more issues. Glad the plugin wasn't the issue.

2 donations for all that effort? C'mon guys - if you're using this mod, It's probably because you got spam raped at some point and had to spend a LOT of time removing the spam - how much time has this mod saved you? Express that time in dollars and then donate to the author!

WOW! 21k downloads, 4.5k installs, 3.3k replies and only 2 donations? That's some support from the author to do that with no return.

I know, right? It would have taken a substantial amount of time to develop the mod, and for such a poor return it would dissuade them from investing in other mod development.

I don't see anything either plus there are other ways of contributing to this mod like placing a link in the footer of your website to their hosting company. That's were they make their money, not off donations of this mod.

There is no indication on vbulletin.org of the donations - I was referring to personal correspondence the author sent me when I dontated - the author made the effort to personally thank me for my donation, and mentioned how many they had received relating to this mod.

This mod places one link on the target forum, and it's a link to this very thread - and that can be disabled. There is an option to enable a link to be visible for their own hosting company, but it is disabled by default (an honourable and appreciated default setting).

If you think for a second that most users would enable this setting to promote their hosting service, then you are sadly mistaken - did you? If 1000 people enabled this, then maybe that meant a few new customers their way - and they wouldn't be making that much money from each customer judging from their product offerings.

Recently added SOM and the 'bad word' list is working great; however, it only checks the bpdy of the message and does not check the title. Spammers will post the information they want in the title and then just garbage (e.g., fkjdasfjksadljfsa) in the body of the message.

Any thoughts on how to configure SOM to check the title; as well as, the body of the message?

Second this. We're getting a ton of spam on a forum where the titles contain matching words in the 'bad word' list, but the body is just gibberish.
Is there a way to check the titles as well as the body?

Hi Guys

Anyone come across this type of error? It occurs when I mark a post for moderation and then use the spam-o-matic option in the drop down menu to delete, block and submit to the SPAM database. After clicking, screen goes to white and the following error appears

Fatal error: Class 'vBSEO_Storage' not found in /homepages/0/XXX/XXX/XXX/SMF/includes/class_dm_user.php(2350) : eval()'d code on line 1

The process still works, i.e. deleted, blocked and submitted though.

Like some of you, I stopped using VBSEO when they stopped operating, but simply disabled the plugin, never removed it.

Is there any way to remove Spam-O-Matic from the postbit?

I have hidden the IPs even from Mods on the forum, but this way if they choose a post, then choose "Spam-O-Matic" and "Proceed", they can see every user's IP and email, which is not something i would like to happen :(

Well, I would not say no spammer ever, but it does block 100% of spambots, you still will get a occasional human spammer, but they are few and far between.

I'm running VB 4.1.11 and have been using this plug-in for several years with great success. Recently it was brought to my attention that users got the follow error when trying to register:

Registration denied. We check new registrations against a database of know forum spammers. At this time, we are unable to contact this database to verify your registration.

I upgraded to the latest Spam-O-Matic today and the error still occurs. I've tried with and without a API key without any success. Anyone come across this or have any ideas to help?

How do you restrict this mod, so only certain users/certain usergroups can use it?

I don't want it to appear in the Moderation Tools for all my moderators to use.

This mod blocks many spam registrations which is great but I still get a about 10+ spam registration that go through every day.

I still have to manually check every registration to verify that it is legitimate.

I have both keys installed.

Is this normal or is there anything else I can do to prevent the spammers from getting through?

I have also added KeyCAPTCHA or you could add FunCAPTCHA the two should give you a 99.9% rate.

4.2.3 is the current version of vBulletin, and spamomatic is working famously with my 4.2.3.

I have had it installed since early 2012, through every upgrade.

Yesterday I changed made some changes to my photopost classifieds product plugins. Today I find spammers hitting my site without going through the glowhost "newbie" process.

The changes I made with photopost were related to Members scripts and were made in the plug in manager only.

When I go to the offending users, I don't find the "spam-o-matic - remove and ban user" at the bottom of the drop down menu. Not sure how to approach this, should I try a reinstall of glowhost?

I tried re-importing the .xml file, but it did not add the "remove and ban user" !

Is it possible there is a conflict between Photopost and Glowhost, both are reputable programs?
