This! Just looking at my stats lately, there are so many more spammers than legit users. Also if they have trouble they just use the Contact Us link, and I can sort out whatever issues.

In the last two days I've had avout 100 spammers register and this thing is suddenly not stopping them. I tried the above change to the url and it apparently did nothing because I got a boatload of them registering last night.

Stop Forum Spam was down for a while, hence the registrations were getting through. Stop Forum Spam is now back online, so they should get blocked.

SFS is working on both links. I haven't had an issue with increase spammers and they're being rejected daily on my site.

Turn on reCAPTCHA or one of the many other CAPTCHA mods out there to stop them spamming your contact us.

During the StopForumSpan server downtime yesterday, this mod was denying all new registrations even though my setting for:

What should happen if the remote connection times out when querying the new registration? set to Allow Registration.

This is a sample of the log details:
"Spam-O-Matic Tagged email - [email protected] Unable to connect to StopForumSpam.com. This is probably due to some temporary problems on their website: Unable to check. User passed to vBulletin registration system per your settings at 'StopForumSpam: Query"

It said it passed the registration attempts on, but no registrations with this type of log details ever came through.

This amounted to quite a few registration attempts over multiple hours to be incorrectly denied by what appears to be an issue with the mod.

Can anyone else confirm this issue?

I've only had this mod installed for a couple days and this is really my first experience with it ...first impressions are not so good.

Try doing what it says on post 1999 see if that helps you

Just installed.. Can i totally get rid of Captcha now ?

I will give that a shot, but without knowing exactly which urls in the file to change and which ones to leave alone I worry I might screw something up. Since the mod does seem to work correctly when their servers are up I'm not sure even changing the api address would do much to solve my original issue.

My concern still is that the issue I had really didn't revolve around whether the server could be contacted or not but rather what it did when it couldn't be contacted. When it couldn't be contacted it didn't do what it said it did nor what the settings chosen in the admincp were set up for it to do.

Is this product no longer supported by the original author? Seems like this mod has been abandoned by GlowHost.com, their last post was close to a year ago. Not really a product that many large vB forums could live without!

As it says in that post change all of them. If it does not work you can always install the unedited one again? But if you do use this new URL you need to register with them and get a new api

My installation is working fine, and I didn't make any modifications to the code. SFS has occasionally been unreachable in the last few weeks, but has always come back eventually. I don't see what benefit there is to changing the URLs from www. to api.

You should a least keep one first line of defense to weed out most of the less advanced spambots. If not a Captcha, then at least a challenge question.

From the forum posts at StopForumSpam.com and their twitter posts it sounds like the api address at api.stopforumspam.com will be the more robust one (providing mirrors, erc.) that will allow for a lot less downtime in case of issues. The current address does not have all these capabilities and supposedly will not be getting them (from what I can tell) but still may work for some time. Currently both are working, but it is something everyone using this mod should keep on top of.

1) Did you upload all files before trying to import the XML file?

2) Open PHPMyAdmin and make sure the have the table vb_glowhostspamomatic_log If you do not then create the table and then try it again.

Your MySQL Version : 5.5.23-55 doesn't recognize TYPE=MyISAM. There are 3 instances of it in the XML file. Open the XML and replace the 3 occurrences with ENGINE=MyISAM

That will fix the problem.

vB.org REALLY needs an option for a wiki post after the OP like other sites do.

Can anyone confirm that this is actually a requirement i.e. that we have to change all mentions of stopforumspam.com in file functions_ghsom.php?

If that was an isolate incident with SFS going down a few days ago then ... they seem to have had another of those isolated incidents today!

No, they are not necessary at all. The issues people were experiencing had nothing to do with the specific URL but with database outages and a surge in spam in all forms over the past few days.

Good mod, catches a lot but also misses a fair bit too.

This is honestly the greatest thing ever made.

Pardon my newbishness, but in the readme.txt is says to "Upload content of the upload folder into you forum root folder". Contained in the upload folder are the following folders:

admincp
includes

The root folder already contains a folder called includes, so I must assume that I copy the "contents of the folders" to the "designated folders" within the root folder. We don't have a folder in our root folder called admincp. We do have one called admincontrolpanel. Would that be where I copy the contents of admincp to?

You have not installed many plugins just take the files and upload them to the same name folders

I wish there was a way to add this information in the primary post!! I won't explain in detail, but you are running MySQL 5.5 and TYPE=MyISAM is not recognized. Open the XML file with notepad++ and change the 3 occurrences of that to ENGINE=MyISAM and that will correct the problem. Don't block Username with the mod, and if you read the thread, you will see that these statements have been mentioned multiple times. :)

Feature request, or maybe someone can figure out how to do this. But I'd like better presentation of the data in the log.

I'd like to see a histogram graph of how many spammers were blocked per week, per day, per hour, etc. What caused them to be rejected. Country of origin. How many legit users made it through, etc.

That way I could get a sense of what antispam efforts are helping, etc.

Anyway to download the data as a CSV file, then I could just use Excell or Matlab or something.

You already have two such lists available to you. The first is in the Statistics and Logs in the AdminCP, the second is in the database under the table name glowhostspamomatic_log

Date, IP address, Username, e-mail address, and a reason is given. I think that those two lists work just fine for me.

Why is there a link under "whats going on?" that links to this vbulletin.org thread?
Can that be disabled? I already have the affiliate disabled and give thanks.

I see that its supposed to list who has been blocked ect ect, mine shows nothing at the moment because my forum has been turned off since i just upgraded to 4.2.0.

You need to look for the option that reads "Statistics: Link to Spam-O-Matic? - Link "By Spam-O-Matic" in forum statistics to vBulletin.org so others can protect their forums with Spam-O-Matic." and set this to No or Yes.

Hello guys, I really need help with this plugin. I've got my WordPress installation integrated with vB. Whenever a new thread is made in WP, its posted in a specific section in vB by a specific user but whenever i've the Spam-O-Matic enabled, it wouldnt make a new thread it vB.

This is the error it gives when I try to publish the post in WP:
It gets published in WP but corresponding thread in vB isnt made even though it'll added that user and its user group as an exception in Spam-O-Matic's settings.

Open The XML file (product-glowhostspamomatic.xml) and edit "TYPE=MyISAM" to say "ENGINE=MyISAM" in 3 places: on line 30, 38 and 47. Resave, then reimport and allow overwrite.

This is a change required for the MySQL version you have (highlighted in red above).

Change TYPE=MyISAM to ENGINE=MyISAM in the XML file when doing a new install, and to developer please add another copy for this it would be easier. :)

I did as asked. Uploaded the spam o matic folder to forum root, and the xml file to the plugins manager. Am i missing something?

then go to admincp/Plugins & Products/Manage Products scroll down and click Add/Import Product and upload the product-glowhostspamomatic.xml

All of it? The reason I say that is because I followed the post instructions. My questions if.. since I did those two things in the instructions. The issue is WHAT do I do next, after I've done what I did.

I see request after request after request of a whitelist option. Any news on that front? No one has a solution. I have to stop using the plugin (even though it's AWESOME) because I'm getting far to many normal people that can't register due to being listed as spammers, and they aren't.

I found that disabling the username check but keeping the IP and email check enabled has fixed the issue of banning genuine users while keeping all the spammers and bots at bay. Have you tried this setting yet?

I had not, so right now I just changed it too IP and Email check only. Lets see how that works.

I have this installed, and it was working well. Lately I have been getting hammered every day with tons of spammer accounts. Is there an update for this? Will there be soon? Is there another option that will work???

I think I figured it out. Somehow the option of what to do when a spammer is detected got changed to allow them to register, not block registration.

Yes, the title should be hyperlinked and nothing should display under it when first installed. Depending on how you set your admin settings depends on what will eventually show there. Check under statistics and logs for "GlowHost - Spam-O-Matic Logs" to see if it is running.

But on pic link i attached it shows that it should say alot of txt under name like of how meny spammers is blocked and so :/

Not until it actually blocks spammers, until then it will be blank. If you have a slow site it could be blank for awhile.

Is there any way to report a spammer to StopForumSpam if they never post? Just recently spammers have been registering by the dozens (per day) but they don't post. They were after the blog feature but I have the blog spam under control, I just want to report them.

yeah you are just using it as a plugin and nothing to do with the product as there are no vb variables shown for glowhost product

mine is based on [GlowHost] Spam-O-Matic - Spam Firewall stops forum spam
vb variables which is why i suggested using my code as it fits the need for the plugin addon for stopforumspam

This mod has been a life saver. I just want to point out, though, that I finally got around to changing my Human Verification Options from ReCaptcha to a very easy Question and Answer, and now I hardly have any spam even getting to the SFS check stage. I used to see one every few minutes, no I only have one every several hours. Pretty awesome.

Newbie to forums here, I just purchased and attempted to install vB5 beta 11 and gave up after 3 installs and then realizing that it was a bad idea to try out a beta when I hadn't done anything beyond HTML in 10 years LOL, and no plug-ins were written for it yet.

Installed vB4.2 P2 with ease after the learning steps above and then installed keycaptcha (LOVE that thing!), SOM and vB Bad Behaviour, thanks to links on vbulletin.com. Got an Aksimet and StopForumSpam keys also. Also added a Q&A to the registration screen. I think with all of that, I may never have much of a spammer problem at all.

Had trouble with getting new "test" users set up, it was pegging every attempt as a spammer, turning SOM off fixed it, but I still wanted it up and running. Read the first 300 and last 200 posts on this thread (roughly) and determined that I hadn't configured it right, but there really isn't a guide for configuring. I figured out from various posts that I needed to

1) disable Akismet in vBulletin and let SOM handle it
2) decrease the SFS remote expiry from 90 days to 10 days (I believe it was this that fixed the registration problem)

Can anyone think of anything else I should consider? I do not have newbies manager on. I do have auto-moderation on, but I might shut this off unless a problem arises.

From reading what I have read on here and vbulletin.com, I am very happy to have found the tools to prevent problems from happening. Now I suppose it's a waiting game to see if the bots can break keycaptcha.

It's not a good idea to report someone as a spammer unless they have actually spammed your site. This can cause problems for other users who may share that IP from registering at other sites.

Yes, it would be very nice if this could work. ESPECIALLY if there was a way to whitelist for a period of time only. (ie 7 days)

I catch spammers who register alot - before they post. They arent listed in the database. Its cumbersome to go to stopforumspam and add the entry as wel as manually deleting the user. It would be great if this could be a one click deal like on posts.

Also, it would be nice if we could block by country. I have no use of China members for example - and would just like to block them outright.

this will allow you to submit them from admincp when viewing users details in admincp

Here is a good website to use. Add the rules to your .htaccess file to block from countries you do not want on your site.

Of course another way to do this is within vB. Settings > Options > User Banning Options
You have the option to use "*" as a wildcard so it will take a little time to do, which is why using the .htaccess is better.

I'm using duplicate up report by bop5 ip and threads created with this mod are moderated. The userid and usergroup are on the whitelist.

First, thank you for this add-on. In the 7 months since it was added, Glow-Host Spam-o-Matic has blocked ~1,000 spammers.

What concerns me is that for the past several days, spammers with very high reports at StopForumSpam are being passed to registration -- not all but 50+ have been passed through just the past three days. It isn't an issue with StopForumSpam being unavailable, as each as the indication, "Passed StopForumSpam checks. Sent to vBulletin Registration System."

Two examples from today:

• http://www.stopforumspam.com/ipcheck/60.173.10.57 -- 60.173.10.57 appears in our database 3704 times
• http://www.stopforumspam.com/ipcheck/61.191.188.49 -- 61.191.188.49 appears in our database 1058 times

None of them are over the 90-day setting, which we use as recommended. We also use the recommended 30 minute setting for "StopForumSpam: Data Fetching - Cache".
