VB 4.2.0

Auto-Moderation: Enable
Set this to "Disabled" to completely disable all Auto-Moderation settings below.

I have set this to Disable but I have post from people that are still being moderated.

How can I prevent the posts from being moderated?

Thank you,

Brian

How can I prevent the posts from being moderated?

A follow-up to my post above. I'm still looking for a way to prevent posts from automatically being moderated.

I have set "Auto-Moderation" to "Disable" but posts are still ending up in the moderation queue.

I would like to stop the auto moderation or at least receive a notification when one has been moderated.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Brian

Hi

I recently moved servers and when i submit / click the link to submit the user to ban, block and report etc the page takes a while to load then i get this:

504 Gateway Time-out

nginx/1.9.2

DO you have any idea what is causing this or do i need to open specifi ports on my firewall to let this traffic connect ?

Thanks in Advance for this great Mod !

Hello,

your antispam plugin is great help. THank you for it.
I would like to ask you if you can add one feature that im missing.

It is IP address banning.

I would like to be able to tick box to ban user IP along with deleting his account and posts.

That would allow more effective relieving of spammers.

Thank you

Hi everybody,
please can I know how to complete remove this plugin??
I have uninstalled it from my board but many people is still telling me that is not possible to register to the site (because the stopforumspam is blocking the registrations to the real users).
Normal names as "Claudio" or "Stephan" are blocked, so I want know if is possible how to completly remove this kind of ban.

Thanks in advance.

squidsk 30 Sep 2015 20:10

If you've uninstalled the product and removed all files then anybody getting blocked is not being blocked by this product. Since if there are no plugins running (because the product was uninstalled) and no residual files, there's nothing from the product left to be causing issues.

markoroots 01 Oct 2015 15:57

Thanks Squidisk.
Yes but do you know what can cause this.
I try to register a username "Claudio" and when I complete the registration page it come this message:

Spammers Block

Some people tell me that maybe can be the stopforumspan plugin.
Please do you know what can be and how to resolve?

Thanks in advance

markoroots 01 Oct 2015 16:05

And also...
if I search the phrase "Spammers Block"
I found this page... so it mean that "stopforumspam" is still on my site...

https://www.vbulletin.org/forum/external/2015/10/25.png

squidsk 01 Oct 2015 21:06

That isn't related to SoM for two reasons, one it is listed as belonging to the vbulletin product (Prodotto) and two it isn't in the product xml for SoM. Some thing else has put that phrase into your db, and something else is using it. You'll need to go over all your plugin code carefully to figure out what it is.

markoroots 02 Oct 2015 09:51

Hi Squidisk and thanks for your reply.
I really don't know what and where to search this...
Can you please give me some tips??

Alan_SP 02 Oct 2015 13:35

You need to check your product manager page to see all mods you have installed. Checking their names you'll see which ones are related with spam.

setishock 11 Oct 2015 15:03

Downloaded and installed on 4.2.3. Working great. I can sleep through the night and not wake up to a heavily spam forum.
This is a relief at last. Thank you.

setishock 21 Oct 2015 08:22

It is resource intensive. My IO cap on my hosting is 1024 and it bangs right up on the cap. It causes my hosting to warn me of this and the forum slows down dramatically.
It's a nice concept but it use way too many resources. I'm afraid it's got to go. I've got up some pretty tricky Q and A so we'll see how that goes.

Q and A won't stop spammers

Yes, I found it was using a lot of resources too, but if you look at the Spam-O-Matic log files, you can reduce the load by blocking IPs that regularly try to register anyway.

Among the ones that were hitting my site too much but being blocked by Spam-O-Matic were:
91.200.12.102
91.200.12.170
91.200.12.23
91.200.12.27
91.200.12.46
91.200.12.66
91.200.12.68
91.200.12.69
91.200.12.72
91.200.12.94

I had blocked these before discovering the association with the log files in glowhost, so check these too:
91.121.221.15
62.210.152.87
136.243.75.162
218.205.17.150
60.169.75.155
212.7.217.2
218.205.17.168
221.178.182.182
61.160.212.57
91.200.12.66
91.212.124.147
91.212.124.159
91.212.124.185
46.229.164.98
90.155.154.76
46.229.164.99
46.229.164.100
46.229.164.101
46.229.164.102

Spam-O-Matic stopped the forum spam, but it seems to cause a server load if you allowed the IPs to continue hitting.

rcull 06 Dec 2015 13:55

I am running Spam-O-Matic on VB 4.2.2. The newly registered are going into the "Newbies" group (usergroup #31). I have enabled Auto-Promotion, but they don't seem to be moving to the Registered Group (#2).

Newbies Manager: Put New User Into Newbies Group? Yes
Newbies Manager: Newbies Group ID 31
Newbies Manager: Auto-promote Users From Newbies To Trusted/Registered Users? Yes
Newbies Manager: Trusted/Registered Users Group ID 2
Newbies Manager: Promotion From Post Count 3

I am on a virtual server, is it possible that my host has something set that is interfering with it? Maybe they have something that stops the cron job?

I really don't have a need to keep new users in a reduced privileges group.

Thanks

Just as a note, I have found that recently there has been the odd registration that has bypassed the "Newbie" classification. They don't seem to post. I suspect they are hackers working on an access.

I know this from one of my two sites which is interest and geography specific. It is too quite for anyone to register on without a reason. This morning I had two, I have probably had a total known of less than a handful. It is interesting that these two were 30 minutes apart on a site which is lucky to get one new registration every few months, and they are both from the San Fransico area, 45.72.3.101 , 107.172.233.66 .

Operating a one million post forum.

Just installed the #3 version on 3.8.9 - Great!

Does anyone answer the phone here? I'd sure like to discuss the operations of Spam-O-Matic.

Lots of bots trying to get in and still getting through. Still on manual approval. Did the renaming of register.php - not effective. It's a mess out there.

The vBulletin User Banning Options for email address or IP no longer appear to work. It's like Spam-O-Matic gets to them first. I put "@mail.ru" in the email section and they come barreling through in the hordes. Which one is easier on the server?

patracy 25 Jan 2016 00:36

I have 2.0.2 installed. Any considerations or steps I should take to upgrade to 2.1.2?

dirkji 28 Jan 2016 13:13

I get daily spam threads on my vBulletin forum that use the same word over and over again.
I added that word to the Bad Words list in Spam-o-Matic, but to no avail.
The word is used in a link, could that be the problem?

Thanks for this mod, this will greatly help me in administrating my forum.
Unfortunately I can't get the auto-moderation to work.
I created a new user and tried posting something including URLs. Although I think my settings (see attached) should send this post to moderation it is published instantly.

Am I missing something?

EDIT: I think it is probably like this: www.google.com does not get moderated, http://www.google.com does get moderated. Is there any way to change this?

Same problem here...

BadgerDog 16 Feb 2016 12:14

I upgraded to v2.1.2 for my vBulletin site running v4.1.3PL8 ..

Upgrade went fine and site runs fine, until someone tries to post something, or reply to a post. It simply hangs with the browser spinning wheel and the post never submits.

Even myself as an Admin and with usergroup 5 excluded in the mod options, it still won't post. If I disable Spamomatic, then everything runs fine again.

Anyone have an ideas as to why it broke?

Thanks...

Regards,
Doug

kerrghann 19 Feb 2016 12:00

Last time I used this, I absolutely loved it. Unfortunately, I had to disable it after I discovered a pretty decent flaw in it.

Basically, on my site, we have users that can run their own mini-forum. Unfortunately, as soon as you make them a 'Moderator' of only that forum, it seems they can delete peoples posts and ban them using Spam-O-Matic anywhere on the forum.

I'm writing to inquire as to whether or not this was resolved?

BadgerDog 19 Feb 2016 13:15

Finally uninstalled this beast ...

Far too complicated for what we need...

Thanks for the effort anyway ..

Regards,
Doug

You can manually disable this.

You can go in options, but if you want to disable option in inline moderation, it is controlled with this plugin: Menu item in Moderation Tools You can easily found it in plugin manager.

If you disable it, no one can use it, whatever settings of the mod are in use.

Also you can edit it, by adding controls who can see that option

Block Disabled:      (Update License Status)
Suspended or Unlicensed Members Cannot View Code.

Of course, you decide which usergroups will see that option. Allow it only to admins, or supermods.

One of my members has a problem when she tries to post, I have Vbulletin 4.2 and according to support, they suggested I get in touch with the author of Glowhost about my error.

I'm a little concerned about putting the error on the forum for security reasons, any suggestions how I can send it on but out of the publics eye?

Thanks

Pete

Seeing as how the developer of the mod hasn't been online since June of 2014 I'd say it would do you no good to send a private message but you could try. I think you'd have better luck asking one of the more experienced users of this mod for help. I've been using this mod for several years without issue.

Without details its hard to help with the problem. If you could provide some extra details about what exactly are they experiencing then we might be able to find a solution.

If you are trying to upload the Romanian language pack you need to do that from the ACP -> Languages & Phrases -> Download/Upload Languages -> Import Language XML File

Use this link for more details: https://www.rostyles.com/articles.ht...ck-update-r10/

I have an issue with auto-moderation.
As soon as a user is banned/blocked or a post/thread is queued for moderation - I will not recv any message/PM/Email or any other kind of notification.
That means that I would need to look in the admin/moderator panel several times a day to check if something is blocked/banned or whatever. And I have to check the glowhost logs by hand.

How can I setup a notification for all actions or at least block/ban actions, please? (to all moderators/admins via Email)

There is an option for reported postings and warned users. But it seems that glowhost is not using this feature.

I have installed this one and working great so far. This is time saving for all VB users.
:D

Paullus 28 Jun 2016 03:40

In the past week or so I've a number of bots (approx 1-2/day) register and post spam on my forum despite this mod installed. I've increased the number of questions for the human verification and yesterday I enabled the auto-moderation to prevent URLs posted by users with low post counts, and yet one managed to post today. I do not have any API keys either.

Is anyone else experiencing a recent decline in performance? From what I can tell the mod as been working flawlessly for almost a year with most spammers stopped at registration. No other changes have been made in the forum software. I'll try a uninstall/reinstall as well.

Any experiences or help would be appreciated.

Cheers

I would recommend the new recaptcha system. Use this for link posting denial and isee promotion.

Check post's title for the bad words
by senchaservices

First, thank you for this great plugin. It has helped tremendously! Also, sorry if this has already been mentioned in this thread, I tried searching but this thread has 200+ pages...

I was still getting posts through even though there were some words listed in my bad words list. Turns out, spammers may be smart after all because these words were in a post's title not the pagetext (body) of the post and checking the source I saw this conditional:

Block Disabled:      (Update License Status)
Suspended or Unlicensed Members Cannot View Code.

So it's only checking the body of the post. To add in the title, I changed it to:

Block Disabled:      (Update License Status)
Suspended or Unlicensed Members Cannot View Code.

Now it will catch keywords in the title also. So far no reports of issues (other than some false positives with my aggressive bad words entries).

Feature Request

Hi,

The best mod by far and i have donated !

Can you add an option so that its easier to select multiple spammers and submit them all at once ?

Yesterday i got spammed 175 times !!! even with the new recapcha installed and i had to go into each user and submit them one by one via the drop down option: Spam-O-Matic - Remove and Ban User

Possible new feature:

ACP>Users>"Prune/ Move Users" and then "Action:" at the bottom of the page when you have filtered the users you want click Spam-O-Matic - Remove and Ban User all at once (also no need to click the link to confirm)

I just need a quick and easy way to select multiple users and do the following:

- submit user details to Akismet database
- submit user details to StopForumSpam.com database
- remove the user
- remove the user threads
- remove the user posts
- remove the user PMs
- remove the user calendar events

Please can this feature be added, im sure many people would like it a lot ! :)

Hello,

I installed this and it's greatly helping to prevent the amount of spam I'm receiving... thanks for that!

However, the bots are getting around this by pasting the url in the thread title like this:

Title: http://theirdumbspamsite.com/some-page/
Post: garbage spam

Is there anyway to block new threads, or queue them for moderation, if they contain "http://" or something similar in the thread title? No normal users use "http://" in the thread titles, 100% of the time it's spam.

Thanks

Yeah, this is quite a global problem right now.

you'd think it'd be easy enough to censor titles only, but i'm unable to find anything...

I get the following error on install, how can I fix?

Block Disabled:      (Update License Status)
Suspended or Unlicensed Members Cannot View Code.

L.E. I have found the issue. Was caused by a different wrong PHPMyAdmin encoding for database tables, other then the ones existing.

mhep 13 Nov 2016 20:23

Lately, some threads are not being moderated, but the post still is. This is leaving threads live even though the posts are being moved to moderation as they should. Any idea what is causing this?

In other words, in Activity or a Sub Forum view users can still click on the thread, which takes them to nothing, really, because the first post of the thread is indeed correctly moderated. Happens about 20-30% of the time lately. Getting dozens a day.

I had this installed on my forum and it was exploited (filestore72.info redirect). Just an FYI, especially since it no longer appears to be a supported plugin.

I doubt this mod was the vulnerability. Once someone gains access to your file system they can exploit any file they want.

My bad - you were correct. Somehow, they got access to my AdminCP (which I renamed from default long ago) and were injecting PHP redirect code into the plugins. I have ensured there are no rogue admin accounts and all passwords have been reset and further secured my AdminCP with .htaccess and voila, the redirects have stopped.

Thankfully, the VPS my board sits on was not compromised in any way.

If you have the filestore hack you will have to do more than that. You will need to check and clean your files and your database.

A good place to start is in the diagnostics within your admincp and look for debase64 added to any of those files.. Mark has a guide on this if you search.

Better to start a new thread though or post in an existing thread about this hack if you need too so we do not go off topic here.

GlowHost is secure. I have been using it for many years on many sites and never had a security issue with it.

I realize this hasn't been updated in a while and this is probably not worth bringing up but...

For the last few weeks I've had some very persistent spammers causing me headaches. Firstly they're starting off using new email addresses (all gmail) and clean IP addresses from SFS's perspective. They register, then put spam info into their profile fields, such as name. I do the easy cleanup immediately and their data is submitted to SFS as expected. The issue is that since this appears to be automated, they simply register again immediately using the same IP and email, and I have to manually cleanup registrations from the same email/ip multiple times.

I believe this is because of the caching function of GSOM. If only the bad query results (i.e. this name/email/ip is listed in the db), rather than all query results, then this wouldn't be a problem. And, doing it this way wouldn't add unnecessary burden to SFS's servers because valid users aren't constantly trying to register. Caching clean results isn't necessary.

I'm going to comb through the code myself to see if I can cobble something together but I'm not a dev so I don't have high hopes for success.

You should install the New Racaptcha plug in.. http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/misc...._new_recaptcha

That was the first thing I did but it didn't help, not even a little bit.

I have been running a couple of modifications which can help make a few dollars with the Glowhost Spam-O-Matic plug in.

Here it is Click Here.

Is an extented data privacy statement necessary when this mod is installed?
Like for sending user IPs and email adresses to Akismet and StopForumSpam?

Hmm funny you say this. I'm dealing with the same issue right now. Slowly enabling addons one at a time and looking for updates. I haven't enabled this yet and no redirects so far.

Zarxrax 12 Nov 2017 11:31

In the past couple of months I have seen a big increase in spam posts, and the automoderation in this addon doesnt seem to be working like I expect it should. For instance, I have it set to automoderate posts with more than 1 link, but I frequently see posts get through with more than 1 link. I also have "live stream" and "live streaming" listed in my bad words, but almost every spam posts contains these words. Only maybe 10% of spam posts actually end up in moderation.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

This product hasn't been updated in over four years and it has major security holes. It should probably be removed from the downloads section and quarantined. That's what is wrong.

What would you recommend that I do for spam protection then? It's a real problem on my board and akismet doesnt catch it.

StopForumSpam will catch a good deal of it if set up to check both IP addresses and e-mail addresses. Unfortunately, it won't catch everything.

The new Recaptcha will catch virtually all spambots but human spammers can still bypass it.

I find the most effective spam tool is still using the Question And Answer function. If you ask questions that only real people with a genuine interest in your forum can answer, and that don't have "yes" or "no" or "true" or "false" type answers it will stop most of the spam most of the time.

If, for example, you are a math forum, and you ask "How many pieces of pii are in a circle?" only a math nerd would even understand the question. It's not something answerable by a bot or most human spammers.

handruin 12 Nov 2017 13:27

I had the same issue but I can help you fix this. The issue is that the code only looks for "http" urls and not "https", among others when acting on the auto moderation.

Download this plugin and extract the files on your drive. Open the file named "product-glowhostspamomatic.xml" with a text editor.

Search for all instances of this line; I believe there are two of them.

Block Disabled:      (Update License Status)
Suspended or Unlicensed Members Cannot View Code.

Replace that line so that it looks like this:

Block Disabled:      (Update License Status)
Suspended or Unlicensed Members Cannot View Code.

This change will catch all variations of URLs being posted in your forum, not just if they start with http or https so this does a much better job of catching spam.

Under Admin > Manage Products > Add/Import Product:
Once you've made the changes, you can install the plugin again but make sure to select the radio button to "Allow Overwrite".

LOL, the stopforumspam website links to this plugin as the way to implement it on vbulletin 4.
I also have Question and Answers set up on registration that can not be solved by a bot, but that isn't helping lately. I would imagine that any good bot software would keep a database of questions and answers so they only have to be answered once, anyways.

Thanks, I think that might actually be the problem. I'm going to look into the possibility of turning off this plugin altogether if I can find another solution, but if not, I will make these edits.

Hello, i am getting following error many times, and i am getting it only regarding this vB module, and from multiple vB forums hosted on same server of mine:

It do not appear like stopforumspam banned my server IP:

I can login my SFS account, no problem.
UPDATE: i found these timeouts happening only from time to time. And during one timeout i tried to run this command on my hosting server: wget -O /dev/null stopforumspam.com and it timeout and shown SFS IPs and i searched logs for these IPs and also firewall and found these SFS IPs was banned on my firewall because somehow ended up in abuseipdb and stopforum spam blocklist, it could be also my fault.

Version 5.X

Are there any plans to update this mod to work with Version 5.X of vBulletin? (I did a search of this thread but came up empty).

GlowHost.com 09 Feb 2018 17:49

There are no plans for vBulletin 5. The code base is too different and it would have to be written from scratch it looks like.

Total666 23 Feb 2018 21:22

I believe I have the program set to moderate posts from spammers , and it says it is moderating them . But I have 0 moderated post . Wrong Settings ? thanks

BGObsession 25 Feb 2018 20:35

I have used this add-on for years. Prior to Dec 2017, it was stopping numerous spammer account registration attempts. Since late last year, I have only a handful of registrations blocked according to my Glowhost logs.

Anyone else noticed the add-on activity dropping to almost zero? I've made no major changes during that time frame in terms of my site.

I found this plugin ceased being effective years ago. Spambots can create accounts faster than any software can identify and block them. The most effective spam protection I've found is still the Question And Answer combined with the banning of free e-mail addresses. A lot of administrators don't like to block freemail providers like outlook, google, yahoo, aol, etc. but those are what spambots use. Spammers do not pay for e-mail addresses.

BGObsession 04 Mar 2018 16:28

I appreciate the insight - but I'm trying to figure out why this add-on stopped functioning (regardless of how effective it is)? Prior to the October-December 2017 timeframe, it was blocking hundreds of attempted registrations per day. It began dwindling to just a few a week in Jan 2018 and now the logs show zero registrations blocked.

Hard to answer since I don't use it any longer. Are you having a large number of spam accounts getting by it? Maybe they found a way around it.

BGObsession 05 Mar 2018 16:59

No. That's the weird part. I've not had a single spam registration, but the GlowHost add-on appears to have completely stopped working.

Better ask on their site.

rcull 09 Mar 2018 12:59

It is still working for me, thankfully. It logged 37 rejections yesterday! Spamming was getting so bad I wondered if my site was going to survive! Could it could be a server issue. A few years ago I changed virtual servers, and chose GlowHost because they wrote Spam-O-Matic.
Perhaps other hosts are upgrading things that are stopping the program from working properly, while GlowHost is being more careful?

My site is an automotive related site, the only registration that comes by regularily is one where they register with BMW in a field I call "Cars I Own". There is occasionally a post attempt with the registration.

Working for me too. I have it running along side reCaptcha mod. Now, the reCaptcha seems to be stopping most and so the numbers I see stopped in GlowHost Spam-o-matic is much less, but I do still see a few now and them. Running 4.2.5 by the way.

yjeanrenaud 17 May 2018 20:45

we have massive spam bot registrations for three days now.I had to close down registration as they got pass reCaptcha v2. I hope GlowHost will help now stopping this mayem

Zelda-King 21 Oct 2018 08:36

I'm running 4.2.5 and have noticed that this plugin causes users to bypass "awaiting moderation" on registering. I do have a number of other plugins but did test this with all the others disabled. I don't recall this being a problem before so it could be something to do with me having Registered Users as a Newcomer group with limited privileges that only become Approved Users at 10 posts.

However, as the product is still catching spammers and my setup moderates newcomer posts anyway, I will simply keep the product installed and disable user moderation.

Miss Belair 25 Nov 2018 09:44

Wonderful, thank you thank you so much. lifesaver. My forum was over run with over 75000 spammers, already after being installed it has stopped over 60 spammers registering in 3 minutes.

Hello.
I have a one "little problem" and I don't know if are for this product or not.
After install this product, some days after, I view in my admincp that, I have 5070 messages in moderation queue.
But if I click to view this messages, not appears any message, any message for moderation.
I reconfigured this product, but continue appears this 5070 messages in moderation queue and I don't view where are this messages.
Some iddea, its possible its for this product or need search by other vía?

Thanks and regards.

Solved the "issue", apparently a bad configuration of this product and another that I have (welcome new members with thread creation) and generated some threads not visible, with a query in phpmyadmin I could eliminate them.

Hi folks, thread did but I need some help please.

One of my mods last night accidentally spamomatic a long time user.

I'm assuming theres no way to revert them back?

Thanks for any help guys.

attroll 10 Feb 2022 16:10

I am a little confused. Let me explain.
I have a user that is getting the following message when they try to register on my forum.
“Registration denied, this forum runs and active policy not allowing spammers. Please contact us via the “Contact Us” page link if you believe this is in error.

They do not seem to be a spammer, yet there being blocked by the GlowHost addon.
There IP is 2600:387:a:5::17. If I go to the stopforumspam web site and do a search for that IP and check box the EXACT MATCH, and I get the 190 results for 2600:387:a:5::/64. If I click on EXACT MATCH, why is 2600:387:a:5::/64 showing up?

How can I fix it so this user can register, if I know they are not a spammer?

Brucec 25 Apr 2022 23:13

DO I need both downloads Glow Host and also Change log?

I am trying to stop the fake user registrations, I have blocked 70 IP addresses and ranges but the hackers keep finding more.

I wish You have described it in greater detail. I have .zip archive from 2017 and it contains product-glowhostspamomatic.xml and this needs to be imported in Admin / Plugins & Products / Manage Products / [Add/Import Product]. Thats all, no log. Then configure it in vB admin / Options / GlowHost - Spam-O-Matic , entering protected groups separating by "," and "StopForumSpam: API Key".
