I need to decide between this three OS, Debian is good and easy, Gentoo is powerfull but requires more time (imho) and CentOS... welll.. can runs cPanel wich isn't imprescindible for me.

So, what OS do you recommend for use the maximum resources hosting vBulletin?

I doubt it will make much of a difference, more a personal choice i guess.

But please use vBulletin.com forums to discuss hosting or server configuration.

Yeah I doubt there is a big difference. Personally I would use Ubuntu its pretty easy to maintain and use IMO. But out of those three I would go with CentOS or Debain I think.

Thanks, I preffer Debian instead ubuntu, I think is more lightweight.

CentOS is really powerful & out of experience has been the absolute fastest in performance as well as great stability.

Yeah CentOS is very good for start but the main issue is when you have a very Big Board and you want to optimize the usage of your server resources, so, cPanel (assuming that you have Gentoo for use it) isn't the best choice.

So, Im concluding that Gentoo is the best choice if you want to use at the maximum your server resources but needs more linux knowledge, for a balance between knowledge and usage Debian will be better.

FreeBSD rocks way more than nearly any Linux distro Needs some more knowledge maybe compared with SuSe or CentOS - but due the nature of the ports system performance can be a bit better than with precompiled packages.
And the Kernel provides Jails without any OpenVZ / Grsec patching - would even say the BSD code is cleaner than the Linux one.

Well - it's much more personal choice. A bad configured MySQL won't run much faster - doesn't matter which OS one is using.
Personally - and that's just personal - I like the structure of BSD more than Linux where a GNU Kernel is used with userland tools every distributor may freely choose - the BSD base is much more one system where anything 3rd party is installed from the ports.

Just saying - bad configured services won't perform much better if OS xyz is used so best choice is to use what fits your needs - you know - Servers are the wrong machines for learning & playing & trying what command may cause what

At this moment I'm very satisfied with Debian, I get all that I need with a few commands and I'm very used with it.

Maybe the personal choice is like use any personal distro, the best distro will be that one that satisfies your requeriments.
