Notifications not clearing

When users get notifications about updated threads in the top bar in the same count as the PM count, when they go to the messaging area, they have to click delete on each notification. Is there a way to disable this feature? It's very unlike 4.2.2 and I'm afraid that users will be quite frustrated seeing a huge number in the top bar when they have no new messages.

If there's an easy way to fix this or to at least make it less hands-on to clear, please let me know.

functionality fail on vBulletin's part.

Edit: here's the improvement request in JIRA - vote on it: http://tracker.vbulletin.com/browse/VBV-4958

Looks like it'll be fixed in "BRB 5.1.5", which probably means >6 months from now.
